      The fact that they still had to produce Beetles means that there is still some amount of demand for it. Adding that to the fact that this model just screams "Volkswagen" confuses me more as to why they would stop making one of their most recognizable cars. Heck, I'd probably be driving a Beetle if I had the money and a driver's license.

    I bought a used 2012 VW Beetle five years ago with 14K miles. I was not looking for a VW when I bought this. It now has 124K miles and I must admit it has been one of the best mechanically cars I have ever owned, and I am 70 years old. Still on it’s second set of tires and brakes look like they have never been used. I keep it tuned and been getting 34 MPG. Love where all the controls are located. Fun to drive and easy to maneuver in traffic. Been kicking around the ideal buying a new convertible and put it in the garage for an investment. May give it to my grandkids once they become old enough to drive.

  • @xavierleroux5532
    @xavierleroux5532 3 года назад +4

    i’m kind of mad at this :( i want a beetle and now the only options are used. i feel like they could’ve just make less of them if it wasn’t selling as much as before. plus, like everyone said, it’s such an iconic car that it makes no sense and it’s so easy upgradable, the design isn’t dead. they could easily make it more “moder” or futuristic looking while keeping the round look. lastly, beetle is already a special car, imagine if it could be electric. like you mentioned, it’s attractive and not impossible. in my opinion they just shouldn’t have discontinued it.

    If the Beetle were to come back in the future (which I'm almost certain will happen at some point or another) it will most likely be a small electric RWD city car with its battery motors out back and sport not just a hatch but a "frunk". Sounds familiar, doesn't it? ;)
    I honestly feel like a resurrected electric VW Beetle, or "I.D. Bug" perhaps, will be more true to the original Beetle's roots. Sure, it sounds like VW might want it to be a 5-door, but if it were priced competitively it would be a huge hit. Let's hope and continue to look towards the future, but in the meantime, we should give the Beetle a warm farewell.

    The Beetle is the perfect shape to be an affordable electric vehicle. The Nissan Leaf is the highest total-volume selling EV, and it's roughly the same size. If Volkswagon were to make a new, affordable EV like the Leaf or the Renault Zoe- they simply couldn't match the recognition of the Beetle.

    The second generation Bug was a piece of shit!!!! No longer simple, no longer cheap, no longer rear engine, no longer, "The Peoples Car" It was so bad they had to add a vase to put a fake flower in so at least women would buy it. If they had stuck with the original concept that made it great and updated that concept, they could have made it an endless platform that could have been updated and modified through the years like the original, a new standard for "New Age classic". A motor that slides out on a rail in 10 minutes to be worked on or changed with an upgrade. The possibility of an electric version. Endless aftermarket items to choose from. Modular affordable upgrades. They really dropped the ball!!!!! Nothing that made the first generation great was transferred to the second generation except the ghost of a shape. A chance lost in time, like tears in the rain....

      The Artist I cannot disagree more with your statement... old beetle was made for destroyed Germany that’s why it need to be easy to fix and cheap to maintain... but when Golf arrived, it was superior design with FWD, water not air (oil) cooled... and people wanted that...
      New Beetle started new trend with retro styled cars (BMW Mini, Fiat 500 etc.) and yes it was restyled Golf but people who buy it don’t want practical car but different one... small car for the city which looks retro but with all modern features (ABS, airbags, AC etc.)... and it was possible to make it in first place because that was restyled Golf (cheaper to make), after that they made second (third) Beetle because of that...
      Nobody I repeat nobody in developed country except car enthusiast would appreciated old design, and as you know they prefer performance car (911)...
      And last but not least...
      Modularity don’t sell, and best example are smartphones. Endless possibilities yeah give me a break and check “project ARA” I believe...
      At the end you can also call me car enthusiast because I work on my cars and “race” them (check my channel)... but I’m aware that some platforms are made for specific people to do specific task and need to earn profit...
      Cheers

      Your right, in 2018 we need disposable, designed obsolescence. Not something that could last 50 years like the first series. Not something that could be worked on with ease. Not something with modular upgrades that backyard enthusiasts could do. The farther we bring the people away from the car they own, the more a return to the company that makes them. You obviously never owned a first series. Much like the 911, it's design was pure genius. Today, kids put anodized intakes and loud exhausts on on their cars and think that's mechanics. Someone will figure this out at some point and VW will be in the history books of could haves. I'm going to hop in my 68 bug now that has an extra engine sitting on a bench that can be removed in 20 minutes and then watch Goonies.

    For its design I always adored the New Beetle, purely from an aesthetic point of view. Specially this last edition is gorgeous. What a pity it never caught public adoration. The Mini has and the Fiat 500. Why has the New Beetle failed. Perhaps too pricey, costly maintenaince, expensive parts and unpractical all being major factors. However, when something is truly loved, there will always be people bying it. The New Beetle at first could be seen almost daily here in Europe. However, they have vanished soon after a few years. SUV's are the hot trend as well I suppose. It is only logical that VW ends the New Beetle in favour of what people actually want to buy. I truly hate SUV's btw. They all look alike now as well. Gladly Volvo still is big in the market of Gorgeous estates. I'm not particularly keen on VW's model programme anyway, considering recurring significant problems related to engines, transmissions and cost of ownership... Good for business lease plans they are of course, lol. But for the New Beetle, yeah, unloved it was I suppose.

    I'm seriously thinking about getting one of these as a second car. The fact that I won't be able to get one after this year, and that this one looks so good, makes me want it even more.

    What a shame, they lost the whole meaning of "Volkswagen" when they made it a $30,000 car.. that's not "for the people".
    If they would have just put out a cheap ass hooptie that everybody could afford they would sell like... well like olschool beetles.

    • @brado2273
      @brado2273 4 года назад

      Doing so would result in not being able to compete with all the other vehicles in today’s society that aren’t using cheap ass materials, there was no way around it really

      yeah not so much as being called Volkswagen if all they do is kill off small cars and replace them with a suv. Many people still do love beetles, just ask any high schooler who always wears pink and she'll be crying for her daddy to buy one on her sweet 16.

    Too bad the Beetle is such AWFUL quality, engineering and build quality... Maybe next time Volkswagon will get the Koreans to design, engineer and build the NEXT NEW BEETLE... German engineering is awful now. 1998 to 2010 Beetle transmissions are JUNK, and even when repaired wont last long, call any transmission shop, some will repair it, but they will not warrant their own work on Volkswagons. Also, NEVER change your battery on your Beetle, it throws the computer into a DEATH SPIN.. you will have to TOW your Beetle to a VW dealership for them to untangle the SOFTWARE GLITCHES... Window motor failures, A/C failures, typical German car failures.. What a shame. IF you really want a Beetle, buy a 1960 to 1972...

    The big problem with this car is its price
    They command a premium over this car which this doesn’t meet
    If it was competitive it would’ve been big. If the dune was AWD at least or something..
    The golf is more competitive than this. In an era where value is king, this will die
    Don’t get me wrong, this car has a lot of meaning for me, I learned how to drive stick with my grandfathers beetle
    That was my first car, it saddens me but also it doesn’t surprise me. I wish VW handled this better

    Totally bad market positioning of this car. It should have been between a Polo and a Golf and not pricier than a Golf. Main reason of sales failure

  • @chrisfreemesser5707
    @chrisfreemesser5707 5 лет назад +1

    This most recent version of the Beetle didn't sell well because it's grossly overpriced for what it is..a less practical version of the Golf. The '98-'11(?) New Beetle was awfully unreliable (I know, my wife had one) but at least it could be had pretty cheap. Had they kept this newer version in the same sub-$20K range, it would have fared far better.
    An electrified Bug will be interesting to see...at least they can put the motor in the rear, where it belongs. :)
