  • In 1989 Orion Pictures, along with Nelson Entertainment released Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The film was widely loved, and still is, to this day by both critics and fans alike. Because the film was so popular, spawned tons of merchandise and even had two spinoff shows…a sequel was inevitable.
This isn’t just any sequel, it’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. At the time regarded as a love it or hate it film and was considered a box office failure. So let’s go to hell, visit heaven, build some evil and good robots and face off in the Battle of Bands as we check out Bill & Ted’s bonkers follow up on this episode of Revisited.

It wasn’t until much later I realized how purposefully ludicrous the end time traveling was, and now I think about this movie pretty much everytime I see time traveling in movies

Plus he has a cameo as his normal non costume character at the end of the movie. The Scene where Bill & Ted possesses their dads in the police station was extremely funny. Not bad opening in 2nd place behind Terminator 2 in 1991.

  • @Yvolve

It is the perfect sequel in my opinion. The first one was rooted in reality enough that it could reach a larger audience and as it became a hit, and the characters had been established, the sequel could let loose.
Death is definitely the best part of the sequel, but it also means Bill & Ted didn't have to change a lot (so it wouldn't be a carbon copy of the first). Death adds a layer of crazy to the film no human character could have.
It gets quite a bit of hate, but I genuinely like Face the Music. Especially with Death having another great part to play. I do hope they're not going to do a spin-off with the daughters. They were good in the movie, but on their own, they're just female copies of Bill & Ted.

@@derek-64 I definitely see your point and I respect that. To each their own, fortunately. The world would be a very boring place if everyone liked the same things.
As I said, nostalgia played a pretty big part for me. I agree the story is somewhat lacking in parts and it feels a bit rushed, but it did it for me. The first two are definitely the better movies, there is no doubting that.
Hopefully they'll leave it at this. No spin-offs or sequels, I don't think that'll do the series any good.

There a few things I can go into here with both films and what I thought they should be at the time over now and such. Even though these 2 films are only 2 years apart from each other, to a kid, growing up that is a long time. If one was 12 they were now 14. If a kid was 10 they were now 12. Those perspecives absolutely changed for me during those years of 10-12 and 12-14.
From that POV that is a lot of time especially with pop culture, even then. Things still meant things back then. It was not how it is now with the 2 week window. A thing, whatever it is, music, film, a show, whatever, comes out and after 2 weeks its treated like its never existed till the stream or the DVD release and the process repeats itself.
Back in the day one had to do so much more to absorb something, find something, obtain something. Even as far back as 2000 it was impossible to get some things in media just to see/hear for the first time. Today, most things like this can be searched and found in minutes and in a lot of cases free or close to it.
I always looked at B&T as these metal heads that were trying to push this scene on the masses but what we got was more a PG version of that and that is fine. I almost envisioned B&T as Beavis and Butthead but they hardly ever talked about the scene or bands of the scene. Sure they mention a few things but due to the budgets of both films just look at the soundtracks. The first film has almost all no name bands that didn't do very much in popular rock or even metal of the time. If it wasn't for the soundtrack most wouldn't even know who these bands are. The 2nd film tries to include "names" but 80s rock was already looked at as dated by 1991. The soundtrack does a good job of mixing both new songs from older hair bands and newer styles of metal that were just starting to break out.
At the end the Wild Staliions song is "God Gave Rock N' Roll" by KISS and even in 1991 no one really cared about KISS anymore. I am not saying this to be a dick either. I love KISS and I loved that song. I played this tape a lot back in the day but even as a 11-12 year old that was in their first year or 2 of metal/rock I saw this as dated. It being 1991 there was a heavy Alt Rock/Metal scene but I doubt much of that music would have worked in the film.
Both these movies are really a buddy cop series than a pair of movies about metal heads and clichés of that lifestyle.
B&T-EA is a corky young comedy for younger people between middle school and high school, sure elementary kids watched this too cause they are sort of family movies as well. That is how I saw them. B&T-BJ is the same but with a 90s perspective. This is endeniablly a 90s film even though most of the production of this movie is still 1989-1990 all the way up to the 1991 release.
We started seeing 90s style filmmaking in the late 80s and right into 1990-1991. Just most didn't start to notice the 90s astetic till around 1993. Granted I live in SWFL so it might be different for other people in other areas. Probably is more different than the same.

Bogus Journey is the best because has an epic surreal feel to it, with B and T dying going to Heaven and Hell meeting death and then with the great song at the end and the credits rolling with all their accomplishments in the future. The 80s was just SO experimental. You have to give it props for that. People still hated and loved films back then, even if they were surprised by the content.
Nowadays, I don't think there is anything really surprising in a movie. There is far less escapism. The title of a movie now sums up what you're going to see.. and as for Marvel. Sure, it's impressive and CGI laden cutting edge effects. But compare the dialogue to modern films to films in the 80s and they are so wildly different.

The word on the mouth of this movie must’ve been terrible because it dropped all the way from third in the second week to 10th in the third

I've always said it was better. It's my go-to example for a sequel that's better than the original (there aren't too many!)

Excellent Adventure is better than Bogus Journey but it's really hard for a comedy sequel to better than original.

Clicked on this so fast. It’s between what you saw first. I saw bogus journey first so that’s my favorite but not saying excellent adventure isn’t great as well! Face the music was decent

I love the parody of The Seventh Seal. I enjoy this movie.

Definitely my favorite as a kid and adult. Those movies are my childhood. There are a couple gay slurs in there that aren't ok, but unfortunately that was a thing in the 80's / 90's . Doesn't excuse it and I"m sure the writers / performers / directors have grown up since then. But these were the friends I wished I'd had as a little kid. Bogus Journey is the much more creative and dark sibling to the other two films. STATION!

Before I watch this video I’m gonna say I saw the title. YES! Yes it is better. I could talk for days about this film. But the only thing I have to say if you’ve seen this is.
    STATION!

If anything. Bogus journey was a harbinger for the entire thread of films for the 90’s. Good video. I got the like button smashed

Bogus Journey is definitely visually appealing and hell of a lot of fun but Excellent Adventure is slightly a better film in terms of story. But i love the entire trilogy.

Great movie possibly better than the first. Don't know why they need a third though.
