  • On every Muse or Radiohead video on youtube, the other band is mentioned in the comments. Then endless arguments follow. Well, now there's a spot for all of you to argue to your hearts content. I adore both bands and see very few similarities between them. But I though this video would be fun and would settle things once and for all.
    * Yes, you get AWARDED a point for worst hair.

You don't get it. Radiohead fans can be a very sensitive and mentally weak people. They don't know how to respond to any criticism towards this band. Can we all agree:
    - Radiohead and Muse are equally amazing at what they do.
They shouldn't be compared because one band is much softer than the other.
It's like comparing the lead guitarist of a blues band to a shredder.
    It doesn't work.
Matt and Thom are really good at singing, Matt does have a stronger voice as I read somewhere that something about his breathing makes it easier for him to reach high notes, but Thom is still just as good at singing however you can't compare them now because Matts voice got deeper during Black Holes & Revelations so now he sings in a more tenor voice while with Radiohead, In Rainbows is a good example of how Thom frequently uses Falsetto nearly all the time for a warmer sound.
Radiohead & Muse are both incredible bands who sound very different from each other. People keep comparing the two bands from when they first started: Pablo Honey & The Bends - Showbiz & Origins of Symmetry. They have shaped their sound guys, stop comparing their old sound and start complimenting their current sound.

I never actually completely understood where the comparison comes from. To me they don't sound all that similar at all.. I did see someone comparing them and explaining that they both write "big" music.. as in symphonic and epic-sounding, stuff like that, but that Muse writes more about conspiracies and Radiohead are more personal. And I guess I can buy that part.. but otherwise, I don't know?.. I feel like I would enjoy Radiohead a lot more if they were similar, but I've always seen Radiohead as very soft.. which Muse isn't. (I mean, they can be but usually not). I just feel like Radiohead is much closer to other bands than they are to Muse.

Van Halen may be more talented and know more and is an incredible musician and has incredible stage presence, but he simply doesn't have the expression or artistic nature of Hendrix. That's why most will regard Hendrix as the greatest ever. No disrespect at all to Van Halen. That's how I feel about Yorke vs. Bellamy

What is your deal? Did I ever add a negative connotation to my point of Jimi not being a showman? Is my profile picture not one of Jimi Hendrix? Obviously I'm a fan. My point is exactly the opposite of what you're implying. Showmanship doesn't come with time, some just have it, others don't. Be it six years of performing or 66, you either are a showman or you're not. That being said, you act as though my point is that the best musicians are defined by their showmanship, which is the polar opposite of my point. I'm saying the best musicians know how to tap into their expressions and are more genuine, and that the public often sees those who are great showmen as great musicians, simply because they don't know any better. Thanks for insulting my intelligence by arguing a point I wasn't making though.

Thom has much more emotion in his voice, thats what i value in a singer. Matt can sing notes that only a dog can hear and so what? I dont feel anything when he sings, i just think: "Oh, man, what a range he has!". When Yorke does it, i just "levitate". For that simple reason, in my opinion, Thom Yorke is a far better singer than Matt Bellamy.

I like radiohead and muse. But I don't like it when people say that muse 'rip-off' radioheads music. Muse are a VERY original band. Bellamy wrote a whole 3 part symphony. On one of their albums, 'the resistance' it sounds a bit queen influenced, and on one of their newer songs 'panic station' it sounds a bit like Stevie wonders superstition and queens another one bites the dust. But other then that, none of their work sounds like radiohead. Their drummer, Dominic Howard dosent like yorke because when they met they almost started to fight, because yorke was putting them down and belittling them.

Yeah but Muse did rip off Radiohead. Matt constantly aped Thom's falsetto, as well as Jonny's guitar playing (pitch-shifting, tremolo picking etc). Chris has used Colin's "Exit Music" bass effect in countless Muse songs. The social alienation and government tyranny themes were thoroughly explored by Radiohead before Muse even landed a record deal. "Plug in Baby" has a lot of the same features. Muse did find a distinctive sound on later records (more in line with the grandeur of Queen), but I can't un-hear the Radiohead "references" in their late 1990s and early 2000s work. Okay so this stupid argument is going to go on for fucking ever, which is sad because it undermines two incredible bands whose fans should be appreciating the talent behind both, compared to general chart music, as opposed to having stupid arguments with each other. Basically the two are completely distinct bands and anyone who is not biased (likes both) will probably see that very early on they went in completely different directions. Muse are far more akin to conventional rock, guitar solos, later branching out into classical music and even dance through Matt Bellamy's ability. Radiohead are far more abstract and experimental, focusing on almost electronic sounds with albums like ok computer and tracks like Idioteque. Muse can't have copied Radiohead because they were writing Showbiz before Ok Computer was released. Two amazing bands, two different bands. Can we all just get along please?

I'm not looking to start anything with any Muse fans and I'm not looking to start anything with any Radiohead fans ( which I am one). I just came to put my 2 cents in and it is this:
    1) The majority of this video isn't even about the bands, its about the lead singers. Sure, there have been incidents where the lead singer is what makes the band, but bands like Radiohead is not one. Thom is a genius, but so is Johnny, Ed, and Phil.
    2) Radiohead came first, and was the first of the era to have that sound. I'm not saying Muse copied, but I wouldn't be surprised if Radiohead was a band Muse enjoyed and/or idled.
I'm not stating which one is better and I'm not saying there is ever going to be a better band. Muse fans like Muse for a reason, Me and Radiohead fans like Radiohead for our reason. And it's not a sin to like both, as i don't mind Muse. I'm just saying this is nothing to get worked up about.

There's not really any songs that sound anywhere near similar (except possibly Yes Please, Agitated and Ashamed,) every Album is different and great fun to listen to. The general trend that I see in this mess of comments is that people who prefer Thom/Radiohead have made a judgement based on the fact that they have listened to both bands, but on the whole (not all of them) Muse/Matt fans don't really know Radiohead.. And as much as I can appreciate both, if you take the time to listen to both of them properly, they are both very good, but it is obvious who the better band are... People just need to calm down as well, think of how many bands there are out there who are much more successful, but honestly utter crap *coldplay* ...who said that?
