Not even sure if this was on purpose but the final shape of Elttar with the curves of its upper body read the same shape as a cobras hood if in silhouette form, really nice!
The ekans on the thumbnail made me immediately think of boitatá, it’s a fire-breathing snake from brazilian folklore that protects forests and that is often depicted as having many eyes along its body, in the same way you laid out the eye-spots. I thought you were going down that route and making it a Fire/Ghost type, but I’m very happy with the actual result nonetheless
The new rendering of Mudsmaché is so much more physically present and 3-D I love it! While I prefer the last version of Mudsbray because of its more rectangular legs, the new version does handle the negative space better and thats what you wanted to fix! I cant wait for another design video :)
i simply love this community! The fact fans became so inspired by your work they made a game, and you in turn became inspired by the fans to make new art. You all are so awesome ❤
With the new ground-type Castform, I have an idea for a gym leader. What if they were a vaquero, and they are based around ground types to take advantage of sandstorms in the deserts! The Pokémon could also be used to protect their Miltank, Tauros, etc from punks that want to steal them!
I remember finding your channel about 3 or 4 years ago, when you were doing the Pokémon redesigns and from watching a couple videos I knew that this channel was something special. You guys stood out from the crowd and have such an infectious creative attitude. Hope you keep doing amazing things :)
Ekans and Arbok have always been a favorite of mine, and it's always sad how weak they are in other games. The fact that you gave ekans a regional form made me so happy!
I know you needed a ground type in your region, but sandstorm Castform would make a lot more sense as a rock type. Since the move is rock type, rock types get their special defense boosted in it, and most importantly. Sandstorm weather ball is a rock type move as well. No issues with the design, a Castform form is cute no matter what. Excellent stuff tho! I love snakes a whole lot, and Ekans is a secret favorite of mine. So seeing it get some love is always good. And the Mudbray redesign looks cool as well, overall. Excellent video and designs as always!
I'm loving these videos where you're working more closely with the progress of the game's development and making choices with that goal in mind. One thing I'd like to see at some point is an exploration of your process of elimination; How to know which ideas are worth using, and which should stay on the cutting room floor. Now that there's a whole team of people working on the project, knowing when to kill your darlings is much more important, so I'd love to see what you've learned from the experience one day in a more in depth, "classic Subjectively" style video!
The updates to mudbray and mudsmache are VERY good. I love the new ekans and giving it a separate evolution was a great touch. I've always wanted new castforms, I'd love new weather type for castform to get more forms!
I'm currently looking for an affordable used iPad to be able to draw digitally. You have inspired me so much over the past two years. I'm very excited to see what your next big project will be.
OMG I POST LONG TIME A GO A IDEIA FOR A EKANS REGIONAL VARIANT AS A RATTLESNAKE AND HERE IT ITS!!! THANKS A LOT Now talking about the new dex page, i think it was cooller that the color behind the pokemon name matchs with its types, it will prevent that the viwer have to interpret soomuch, this is omething used on making magazines, instead of making the vewer interpret so much we use colors to minimize the mental work and direk the atention to the main point (since in pokemon a lot of people are acostmed with the color of tipe, it wold be great to help, not excludin the type box of course), and the circle behind the pokemon coud be a little bit more lighter and larger, this wold emoldurate better the central image and direct the eye focus too the meddle, since the colors on the edges are darker, and the pokemon name looks a little bit to threatening, make it a little bit more round and lighter to match the pokemon culture as something nice and cutt.
He's back! Mudsmache is back! And I like that you went back to the Fairy/Ground type that it had originally. Mazian Ekans has some nice type synergy with it too! Fairy's good against Dark, while Ground's good against Poison. I also like the new Pokedex format. The previous one looked nice too, but this is still good. Well done!
I have so much love for this project. I feel like I learn a lot about design from your redesign videos especially. And while it would have been easy to say, "hey, the dev team already found a workaround by making Arbok dual dark/poison type", I really appreciate your initiative in wanting to make something new. Mazian Ekans and Elttar are amazing additions to the dex. And the naming consistency couldn't help but make me smile.
I really loved the first Elttar pose at 8:50, it really sells that the face is hiding. The updated pose at 9:40 seems more in line with Arbok's behavior.
Some thoughts that came to mind; adding an early dark type is the perfect solution for balancing the learning curve of confronting a ghost type gym however obtaining a Poison Dark type (a powerful type combination with only 1 weakness) sounds very strong for early game. I realise the low defensive stats may make up for this but it's still something I considered. On a less balance focussed note, I would have assumed that a sandstorm form castform would be rock type due to sandstorm being a rock type move and rock types having the most benefits from the sandstorm weather condition (2x special defense). I'm not sure if changing castform's typing due to those reasons would be a concern for you, but thought I'd mention it incase it was something you'd be interested in. Anyways, LOVE how this project is coming together and these designs are awesome!
Over the past few years, I have watched this fan project and your art style improve. The reworking of old designs and themes have been incredible. Keep doing your best. As a side note, I have a concept based Pokemon for you. Bookworm and Ledgerfly. A 2 stage bug type that changes types depending on what book it holds. Looks wise Bookworm has a catterpillar like body with antenna that look like eyeglasses. Ledgerfly looks like a Lunar moth with tatterd paper like wings that have ancient text like squiggles on them. Please use this if you can. Part of the dex entry mentions a belief that learning what is written on the wings could allow a person to understand the Pokemon language and speak to them naturally. Never has been proven... yet!
Yay! i'm glad you're giving the sirens a second look. I did think a couple of them looked a little awkward. hugely looking forward to playing the fully released game.
@Subjectively I love your work, by far the best fakemons designs/game ever! I have a few suggestions made with love. I've noticed that with many Pokémons you've been using "old indigenous style" a little bit too much, lots of feathers, gold armor, and inscriptions patterns. I don't know if your goal is to achieve a similar approach to how gamefreak do it, but when they create their regions, although they are clearly based in recognizable locations, they don't overdo iconographies. For example, the regions based in Japan, their Pókemons don't look like they all have samurai elements. Maybe as a contrast, and continuing with the opposites of conservatism and progressivism, you can work with more modern Mexican pop culture, like Frida Kahlo, Cantinflas or even telenovelas can be used as reference, but please, I beg you 🙏, same as Wobbuffet was based in a famous japanese comidian, can you please make a Chapulín Colorado (famous Mexican character) Mazah Wobbuffet? 😁 Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see more from the Mazah region! Cheers!
When I saw the regional Ekans on the thumbnail, I almost screamed. Ekans is one of my favorite Pokemons, and I'm a poison-type enjoyer. So needless to say, it made se SO HAPPY. Thank you SO MUCH to give them the appreciation they deserve 🙏😭💙
I love the new Pokemon and the new dex layout. I've missed watching your videos because you give me inspiration on possible ways to make new characters. Granted, I make clay sculptures and I don't make Pokemon but I love the principles you talk about and I want to try and use them more whenever I make my sculptures
So, I played the Demo and even made recordings of it here on youtube (I hope that is okay) BUT HOLY CRAP!!! I am so excited for it to be finished! I have been watching and keeping up with this project since its inception. This is going to be an amazing game and a huge hit in the Pokemon community! I am so excited to see more Jack!!!
Honestly like your designs but one Pokémon u should implement is sinsitea with a regional form or convergent evolution based on hot chocolate in a olla de barro. This can even be a three evolution but two stage would be good as well
Kinda miss the little square hooves on Mudbray, but overall a glow-up espeically with the mane. Mudsmache has SO much better a pose and proportions in this new render! And *love* what you did with the head structures for the Ekans line. Though, something about the purple doesn't mesh well w/ the black in Elttar...what if they were reversed?
@Subjectively, Sandstorm is a Rock-type move and Castform's signature move Weather Ball becomes Rock-type when used in Sandstorm. You're going to have to change Sandy Form's Ground-type to Rock-type otherwise it will lose it's STAB on Weather Ball
I'm glad you got rid of the circle centerpiece on the Pokedex entries because it allows for the design to be put on at a reasonable size. I remember struggling with that during the contest with my Seviper evolution line. One evolution had the Pokemon "standing" tall while the other was hunched and stretch horizontal, and they had to be shrunken down to fit into the circle properly.
That's amazing, I've seen the demo on HoodlumCallum's channel! It would be awesome if you had some ideas about some human characters like the playable character, members of the gyms and top 4 or evil team grunts etc., I would love to see a new human character!
I have yet to watch the stream Highlights. But man I have to say how awesome it is that your art has inspired fans to make their own game. Just everything about that is a thing of beauty. One day we'll actually be able to fully experience the fan world you have created. That's gotta fill you with earned pride.
I love all of the new designs. Ekans is one of my favorites (and definitely my favorite gen 1) so I'm so happy to see my little guy get some love. I've wanted a sandstorm castform forever and I love that castform gets a sandstorm form in the Mazah region. Just one little thing though, the move Sandstorm is rock type instead of ground (which I think we can all agree is very questionable) so I would recommend either having it be rock type or alternatively for the Mazah region have it be a ground type move instead. Love this region and all of the love and passion that has gone into it!!!
Like the new page layout, love the inclusion of the evolution method as well as the colored bars for the stats. Speaking of which, personally I'm a big fan of keeping the abbreviation of the stats at 3 characters length with spa, spd, and spe for special attack, special defense, and speed respectively (although I totally understand the ambiguity of spd, as well as both spa and spd being less descriptive for uninitiated). Other than making it more even and better aligning the numbers it would allow for the colored bar to avoid ending before the letters. Or at least it would reduce the likelihood.
man castform is one of my favorite pokemon..and i never realized it didnt have a sandstorm for for a while. love seeing it get some love ..mostly because a lot of people forget castform even exists also, rattle (elttar) reminds me of tree vipers with the little ridged bumps on its head and the face shape, as thats a very tree viper thing. they tend to have ridged bumps that almost resemble horns and a more narrow, flat head. i very much like that design for these reasons
My god you do a better job than game freaks. I love the small details that only Pokémon fan would pick up like shaking up gym types but making type advantage pkm available or saying that castform has only been discovered recently. It's all we ask for and you serve it with cool design. Thank you
Thank you so much for making sandstorm castform! Only problem with it being ground instead of rock is that it won’t get the special defense boost that rock types get in sandstorm, or the same type attack bonus from its rock type weather ball. It looks great tho.
thank u mr jack subjectively for finally fixing the order of the stats displayed in the pokedex. hp-atk-def-spatk-spdef-spd is the only correct order that registers in my brain
I have a feeling that brush set may come in handy, or at least be a lot of fun. I looked forward to trying it out as I've def enjoyed your designing and style.
You say that mudsmaché was only minorly changed, but honestly, this new render is LEAGUES above the original design. There's so much personality, and it has so much more movement in its body. Honestly, the original was so rigid looking that it just threw me off, but this design is amazing.
I would love a mazah region Arbok. I had always wanted to use one in a play through but I never could because I already had another poison type Pokémon. You and the team behind this fan game allowed me to finally use one on my team, not only by it having other poison types, but also by making it part dark type. I wish the games made it a dark type much sooner, then I would have had one on my team much sooner.
YEEEEEEESS EKANS! I absolutely love ekans, and am so happy somebody made a regional form for it, and it looks so good too! Keep up the great work, my guy!
I quite like how Sandstorm Castform looks quite a bit like Hail/Snow Castform, I would have added maybe some jagged edges here and there alongside the cloudy bits(especially now with Snow rather than Hail) to give off that dangerous weather vibe but it's really neat regardless though.
I’m happy he went with the dominantly purple color across the body as it’s a nod to Arbok. If it were black like the Ekans it would look kind of similar to Seviper. Well done!
I like the mimicry elements in Mazian Ekans and Elttar! And I especially love the bait and switch between the Pokémon and it’s typing! Giving Elttar the python body and the cute puppy-mouth head while simultaneously being venemous is a great bait and switch!
I can’t wait to get into this been waiting for ages for this and the teaser looks so cool. Also I think that you should make Mega evolutions for the final evolutions for your starters and a couple more Pokemon because I think there's only six new ones and there could at least be some for the starters maybe.
It really is incredible how big of an impact the small changes you did to Mudsmashé. Love the S shape the body is in now. It makes the look much more grand.
Love the designs as always, though I feel like I have to point out how Sandy Castform doesn't quite work for the "lack of ground types" issue. For one thing it's a form change dependent on the weather. Unless you build a team around it, you won't always want to put up sand since it might harm you. Second, sandstorm is generally a rock centric weather. Ground types aren't hurt by it sure, but rock types get a Sp. Defense boost in sand, and Weather Ball turns rock in sand (I know, Castform doesn't change in sandstorm but it's move does).
Damn that ekans remind me of Rango. It'd be cool to see a cowboy pokemon given one of the teams looks like thats what they are, since there's always that one mon to represent evil teams lol.
3:12 For me, I'll always prefer the design of the ghost gym leader on the right, with her Dusk Ball raised in the air and her mustard-yellow hoodie. Can also read as a potential Rival for the player character, as well as a travel companion for Ash or whoever leads in the Anime. The design on the left can be her little sister.
The thing I love about Elttar is that its tail reminded me of a decorative maraca, but you didn't mention that in the video so I don't even know if it was intentional!
Honestly prefer the shape of the hooves and hair on previous Mudbray, and the pink as well. I think the more square look, but not too much like the first, was just perfect for a piñata mon. The eye shape also made him look carefree and child-like and that was adorable.
I know that the Ekans/Arbok line's whole nameing scheme is tied to "snake but backwards." However I came up with the name Anarchobra and couldn't help but put it up for grabs if you also happen to like it. (As an alternative to Elttar)
I love the new castform, it does genuinely look like an official form. The others are great as well, ekans is really overdue for a regional variant in my opinion, and I love that you kept the naming convention.
I really like all the pokemon. The only change that I would personally make is the new arbok render. I actually liked the original pose and design the most. This one just feels a little disconnected. Even the neck doesn't look like its connected to the head, looking as if its curling around behind. Otherwise, the pokemon look great. It's awesome to see that you're making more pokemon to assist the game devs in balancing the game.
I like how Mazian Ekans and Elttar gets the "rattled" ability, because not only does it work name-wise, but also because it makes this mon even better at it's job of being a ghost slayer.
Due to Rock types gaining a 50% Special Defence boost in sandstorm along with the move being Rock type, it's safe to say that a sandstorm Castform variant should be Rock type rather than ground, however that's just my opinion.
I really like the changes you made on mazian mudsbray's shapes but i think the vibrancy in the colors before the touch up made it more interesting (Btw why did you remove the numbers about height and weight?)
Not gonna lie first pose for mazah Arbok was the best in case of readability. You can see its head and tail clearly and pose is very dynamic. Love the work you do anyway!
I’d love to see a Sunflora evolution given that the demo made it part fire type, and the design itself is pretty lackluster.
Maybe it could be a 'sun' flower, with its face being inspired by mesoamerican sun imagery, like Tonatiuh on the sun stone
Maybe Bellosom can hop on the same wagon, perhaps as a counterpart to Roserade
I find it's sad that it's one of the more forgettable Pokémon
Oh, yes! Paldea gave some much-needed love to the oft-overlooked Johto dex, but Sunflora (other than its... _interesting_ role in Artazon) didn't get anything despite being possibly the worst design in Johto. A new form or evolution for Sunflora is so needed!
I second this
I would love to see Sunflora, and likewise Bellosom, get some much needed love.
I don't know if it was on purpose or not, but Mazian Ekans and Elttar resembles a lot a folklore creature here in Brazil, the Boitatá, a giant black snake that eats the eyes of animals and add them alongside it's own body, sometimes engulfing them on red or blue flames. (edit): oh yeah, it also only shows up at night, so it really fits with the dark type!
just saw this after commenting about the same thing, I’m glad someone else noticed it as well!
You’ve given me an idea for my South American inspired region
a third evo that gains a fire type sig. move that inflicts poison could be cool
@ the above idea, maybe a signature move that inflicts both the listed type damage + fire type damage would be interesting! like flying press on hawlucha :0
Thx! I’m making a Brazil region and this is giving me a good idea! I’ll edit once I make the boitatá pokemon
IMO the slight change to mudsmache's head shape (or rather mane shape) is a huge upgrade in terms of its energy and shape language. It feels a lot stronger now.
I really like how Elttar's silhouette almost mimics Arbok's with how the coiled body makes the shape of a hood! It's a clever shape choice
Also the low contrast which makes the head and the body blend together, drawing your eye to the fake head. At first I thought it was an odd design choice, but it fits the concept perfectly!
9:24 I don't know if this was intended or not, but I like how the way Elttar's neck is posed kind of resembles Arbok's hood!
I caught onto that and liked it too!
There's so many things you can do to a long neck (see sandaconda)
I loved that too, keeping the silhouettes in common!
i also love how it looks similar to a stereotypical genie coming out of a lamp, around the tail
Also the rattle snake tail looks like a pot like is a snake or poisonous fumes where coming out of it
Both RF Mudbray & Mudsmaché feel much more alive.
I love them !
Second edition mudb ray is best
I agree.
Yaaaaaas
They are both such awesome designs

Weather Ball still won't have STAB in a sandstorm, but Castform is too adorable to care 😅
If they can give Ekans the Dark type, they can change Weather Ball's type in Sandstorm.
And having access to a 100bp rock special attack for other sand based special attackers is pretty incredible.

That Castform is adorable and I never noticed it's unnaffected by sandstorms, now I want this in real game
OMG I POST LONG TIME A GO A IDEIA FOR A EKANS REGIONAL VARIANT AS A RATTLESNAKE AND HERE IT ITS!!! THANKS A LOT
Now talking about the new dex page, i think it was cooller that the color behind the pokemon name matchs with its types, it will prevent that the viwer have to interpret soomuch, this is omething used on making magazines, instead of making the vewer interpret so much we use colors to minimize the mental work and direk the atention to the main point (since in pokemon a lot of people are acostmed with the color of tipe, it wold be great to help, not excludin the type box of course), and the circle behind the pokemon coud be a little bit more lighter and larger, this wold emoldurate better the central image and direct the eye focus too the meddle, since the colors on the edges are darker, and the pokemon name looks a little bit to threatening, make it a little bit more round and lighter to match the pokemon culture as something nice and cutt.
Well done!
Whenever I’m doing art work, I immediately rewatch videos on your channel!
13:54 I love imagining Mudmashé standing completely still in battle, then a big gust of wind blows them over
6:37 in the bottom right corner I was thrown off guard seeing the silhouette of mazian arbok
It makes me so happy to see you draw. I still revisit your older content
I really loved the first Elttar pose at 8:50, it really sells that the face is hiding. The updated pose at 9:40 seems more in line with Arbok's behavior.
i really love the new mazian mudbray. it didn’t really feel like mudbray at the beginning, and now it totally does. would 100% add to my team!
What are you saying, I mean really, get a grip dude.
Can't wait to see this badass snake on my team! Fell in love with it as soon as the video ended!
13:34 I just woke up this morning and didn't put my glasses on so I read this name as Mudstaché 😅
The new castform form (lol) is so cute! And I love both of the new evos to old mons as well!
Keep up the good work!
Bro’s new avatar looks like Heisenberg if he used his own supply.
Respectfully.
(Great vid btw😂)
The new layout is really clean! It feels so much less cluttered while also not being boring. Great job!
Loving the new variants, those snakes have such good shapes in their faces!
I love how you explained the sudden appearance of a new castform form.
2:15 whats that unlabled green sliver?
Like the new page layout, love the inclusion of the evolution method as well as the colored bars for the stats. Speaking of which, personally I'm a big fan of keeping the abbreviation of the stats at 3 characters length with spa, spd, and spe for special attack, special defense, and speed respectively (although I totally understand the ambiguity of spd, as well as both spa and spd being less descriptive for uninitiated). Other than making it more even and better aligning the numbers it would allow for the colored bar to avoid ending before the letters. Or at least it would reduce the likelihood.
man castform is one of my favorite pokemon..and i never realized it didnt have a sandstorm for for a while. love seeing it get some love ..mostly because a lot of people forget castform even exists
also, rattle (elttar) reminds me of tree vipers with the little ridged bumps on its head and the face shape, as thats a very tree viper thing. they tend to have ridged bumps that almost resemble horns and a more narrow, flat head. i very much like that design for these reasons
Thank you for finally putting the stats in the right order lol
My god you do a better job than game freaks. I love the small details that only Pokémon fan would pick up like shaking up gym types but making type advantage pkm available or saying that castform has only been discovered recently. It's all we ask for and you serve it with cool design. Thank you
Thank you so much for making sandstorm castform! Only problem with it being ground instead of rock is that it won’t get the special defense boost that rock types get in sandstorm, or the same type attack bonus from its rock type weather ball. It looks great tho.
I love snakes, so it's really cool to see you give Ekins some love with a new regional form
thank u mr jack subjectively for finally fixing the order of the stats displayed in the pokedex. hp-atk-def-spatk-spdef-spd is the only correct order that registers in my brain
Thank you for showing Castform some love 💕
I didn't think you could make me love Mazian Mudbray any more than I already did...but alas, I was wrong 😍
Defense boost in sand, and Weather Ball turns rock in sand (I know, Castform doesn't change in sandstorm but it's move does).
i know its so minor, but i love that you care about these pokemon so much. theyre more than just a project :) its so inspiring!
Can't help but facetiously point out that Castform really ought to be Rock type. Besides that, it looks great though! As do the other mons shown here!
Damn that ekans remind me of Rango. It'd be cool to see a cowboy pokemon given one of the teams looks like thats what they are, since there's always that one mon to represent evil teams lol.
3:12
For me, I'll always prefer the design of the ghost gym leader on the right, with her Dusk Ball raised in the air and her mustard-yellow hoodie. Can also read as a potential Rival for the player character, as well as a travel companion for Ash or whoever leads in the Anime.
The design on the left can be her little sister.
I like how Elttar's body is wriggled into a shape that kind of takes up the same space as Arbok's hood.
(As an alternative to Elttar)
dude wait... ive been watching this channel since a little before the mazah region was started. how have yall not hit 1 mil yet??
I love the new castform, it does genuinely look like an official form. The others are great as well, ekans is really overdue for a regional variant in my opinion, and I love that you kept the naming convention.
Eltar’s pose kinda reads ghost poison type to me. Sorta looks like a snake ghost coming out from an urn rattle which is still awesome.
Man I can't wait to have a mudbray on my team when the full game comes out!!!
i LOVE the new snakes!!! elttar is posed so beautifully, and i love the inspiration from horned vipers and spider-tailed vipers :)
I really like the changes you made on mazian mudsbray's shapes but i think the vibrancy in the colors before the touch up made it more interesting
(Btw why did you remove the numbers about height and weight?)
Nightman snake
Nightman snake
"I'm going for GASPS"
Now we need a Dayman Eagle
Not gonna lie first pose for mazah Arbok was the best in case of readability. You can see its head and tail clearly and pose is very dynamic.
Love the work you do anyway!
