Been using the dongle all season in various sizes for anything from hounds and rays to small flatties like flounder and plaice , find that 9 times out of 10 the hook is exactly where you want right in the corner of the scissor and very rarely have I had to do any beach front surgery on a fish to remove a deep hook , very highly recommended method
We love it, it does exactly what you say. On top of that, the bait is presented in a neater way than if it had two hooks stuck in it. The hook-up rate is also excellent!
Excellent video, so clear and easy to follow. Well done VMO selling 5m lengths of braid. I didn’t want to shell out on hundreds of metres of the stuff to trial dongles. Will definitely order the kit and try them out now.
Have been using similar for a while now, as i really like the way that can use a nice big juicy bait that won't slide around a bend and mask a hookpoint. The difference being that i now use a hair on a Varivas Catfish hook rather than circle hook, as with most patterns of circle hook, when the hair is pulled tight it pulls the bait very close to the point/barb. Whereas thanks to the "squared" shape of the catfish type hook, the point stays nice and clear and exposed. Still hooks fish right in the side of the mouth too👍
It’s good to hear that angler’s are experimenting more with different hooks and hair rigging baits. The kink on the bend of a catfish hook would be the perfect place for a hair rigged bait to hang from too. Jansen
What is the purpose of the hook-shaped metal wire at the end of the line that fixes the bait? After attaching the bait, wouldn't it be convenient to remove it?
With the braid been passed through the hook and then clipped down does it not become a weak point and pull out of the braid during a cast or is still as strong ..
@VealsMailOrder2898 thanks for the reply .. I'm away for skate in bonny scotland in a few weeks so wanted to give these a try and that was the only concern I had .. thanks
The metal clip at the end of the dongle clips in to a Gemini Splashdown Solo bait clip. If you’re using a Breakaway Imp bait clip, you can use a simple loop instead of a clip.
A Pennel rig will present a bait in the same way, but there is more chance of fish taking the hooks deep. The circle hook will lip hook fish most of the time. Also, a single circle hook is far less likely to snag than a Pennel.
Several reasons- if a fish is hooked on one hook, the second hook of a pennel can find a snag on the retrieve. If a fish takes both hooks, it could potentially take one or both hooks deep, preventing it from being returned. The dongle ensures a lip hook 99% of the time. It can also be baited in a way that the hooks don’t interfere with the presentation, meaning the bait is neater and more streamlined for casting.
@VealsMailOrder2898 ive been trying to think of a way for doing clipped down tope rigs with circle hooks instead of the pennel, i need to try this. Should work the same with half a mackerel eh, what do you think?
what gets me is that just because you put something on the end og your hook like a hair rig and say its a dongle rig. thats not a dongle rig your only using a piece of the dongle rig
This is a Dongle rig as recognised by the majority of UK sea anglers, but you’re right in that it is a way of hair-rigging a bait. If you’re suggesting that the rig is incomplete, that’s because Jansen has shown just the trace line featuring the Dongle, and this can then be fished on the rig of your choice. All we know is, it works, and it works very well.
@@tightlinesuk752 Jansen uses this trace on a pulley rig, but we know anglers who have used it on up and over and running leger rigs. We’ll leave that bit up to you!🙂
Works really well when tied the way the South Africans tie it (lead hanging on the hair itself on a slack rig body, so the hooklength takes the strain of the cast) to use really chunky baits that dont wobble and come unclipped during the cast. Have used them like that a few times using big baits like a mackerel head wrapped in strips from the fillet and a few squid strips. Caught a couple of nice bass on those rigs a few months ago, one just over 5lb and one just short of 6. I was over the moon!!! Using them on a pulley rig tied for using worm with just a loop, no clip, doesnt seem to work at the moment, isnt unclipping every time

Regarding Circles,,
any pref's ,,,, Offset Vs Inline??
,,, ive found myself leaning more to inline

Nice clean demo that 👌.
i havnt looked back since 1st using circles and learnin application
Great tutorial thanks Jenson 👍
I've just caught a Pollock on the rotten bottom clip
Nice video Jansen
Will burning the braid and passing the hook through be strong enough to take a 7oz lead with a pendulum cast?
Yes. We weren’t sure until we tested it either
Brilliant mate
What is the purpose of the hook-shaped metal wire at the end of the line that fixes the bait? After attaching the bait, wouldn't it be convenient to remove it?
It is an RBC clip that is used to clip the baited trace in to a Gemini Splashdown Solo clip so that the rig is aerodynamic for casting
I definitely need to order some of these

Does it matter how big the perfection loop is ? Just started using dongle still learning 😊
Try and keep it as small as possible, as long as the hook can still rotate on the loop, it’s fine.
Can I ask why the circle hook is in the perfection loop and not Snelled on? does this improve the hook ups?
@@MrEREDIT Circle hooks work better when they have the freedom to rotate
Hi guys, do you have a link for the braid please
With the braid been passed through the hook and then clipped down does it not become a weak point and pull out of the braid during a cast or is still as strong ..
It’s still incredibly strong. Pass the hook through the centre of the braid and you’ll struggle to pull it off.

Does it matter which braid you use ?
Not that we’ve found. The one used in the video is 300lb and 1.00mm thick.
I use very heavy mono works just as good
What size hook is that

Doesn't a pennel rig do the same?

Ermmmmm... Just a bigger, more elaborate version of the hair rig for carp.
You’re quite right- but it certainly works wonders in saltwater🙂
Why not just use a pennel?
