Your videos are true inspiration for someone just learning these concepts. You definitely earn your subscribers. :)
+Fy S thank you :)
It would be so nice if you could show part of the video where you are making the jumpers for the missing pads (maybe one day that same pads could be missing in another board repair)... Really nice job made from your mind and hands... cheers,
i found out that car paint remover is quite good to apply around the chip.after a while it dissolves the glue.then you can use a brush to wash it away and apply heat to remove ic.
Fantastic work. I got out before surface mount really took over. My eyes are to bad to even consider doing something like this now.
Kerry, I heard that they use this compound to anchor the chip, because the heat generated in the charging process would melt the welds, and lift the m.c. accidentally.
i am verry impressed that you rewired some of those pulled up pads by hand ..
firdt thing i thought when i saw that chip was, that it would be great to have some kind of micro mill to mill that thing off, and the you said something similar..
Very cool!
Did you scavanger the "new" chip from another device or you buy a new one(from where)?
Thank you!
+Мартин Ламбев new, dead PMIC means bad PMIC.
I was actually considering attempting this on my own, that is until I saw your video. Now, I'm happily running in the other direction.
Thank you!!!!
Jessa...thankyou for using your valuable time to make these videos. I wonder, have you tried, or know of any success using a profile with preheating to aid in lifting these underfilled ic's. Kind regards...Rik
If it wasn't such a pain to take out the iPad mini board from the back housing I would consider bottom heat. These chips are relatively small, so I generally don't.
Totally understandable. iPad 2's have under filled pmic, do you encounter the same problems with these? Easy to remove and preheat...thanks again.
Thank you for your video! I have an ipad 1 that doesn't turn on, tested with good battery still no good. I'll try to change the pm ic tomorrow. Have you seen this guy on "Deep Fix" on RUclips changing pm ic chips? He makes it look so easy to do.
thanks Jessa.
What kind of flux you are useing for this black glue?
You're great, i wish to be like you soon. You are so good in troubleshooting and rebaling. Thanks.
That was awesome! When you coated the braid with low-melt solder AND flux - was that to do the entire task in one go (instead of separate flux, low-melt, braid steps)?
I did it yesterday best to get rid off black glue thing is heat and use needle glue will stick together and unglued from components and main board. :)
it would have been funny If the guy who gave you the tip was Orlando from Florida
Gud Day Ma ☺️ amazing job 👏 a question plss do u replace the pm ic with a new one or thesame pm from the tap u replaced thanks.
can you tell me how you learned this stuff? I am in love with this kind of work and i would love to be able to open up a shop that fixes mobo type issues for all microelectronic devices.
loved your vids very educational specially for a beginner tech like me..
Always I'm in problem to changes bga ic which is protected by black glue in Apple products because when i try to remove the big ic like this must of the times I removed the pins from motherboard ...I don't know how to do it without damage the motherboard
Very nice. I need to practice big chips SMD soldering. I tried once to replace a 100 pins TQFP but failed. Truth is I don't have the proper equipment. Without a good microscope you can't do much.

I should, yes. Thank you for the link :)
Question on the microjumpers. I understand the concept but how do you know/determine which components to jump the lifted pads to and do you have a video for doing that?
Just follow the traces in the board
on a separate topic, why are there 11 pads on the logic board for a charge port when there are many less feeds from the cable ? thanks
Hello, love your videos. Thanks for helping out with black light issue. I wanted to ask if the is a hack for fixing a torn IC chip digitizer ribbon? Or broken button ribbon solder tabs? Thanks.
I have had this problem five times over the past year and a half (with an iPad Mini 1). Apple is done giving me replacement devices. Since a new iPad now costs $300, rather than $100, I'm at a loss. Do you know if there's a reliable model that doesn't have this issue? I'm willing to invest in a new machine, but not if I keep having these chips fail on me for no reason.
What kind of schooling did you have to get to do this kind of work? Engineering? Thanks
very nice job 👌
from where did u buy the new chip ?
best regards
I just tried to replace an iPhone PMIC but i cannot clean my soldering tip from this adhesive/glue. How do you clean your tip after so much glue?
at what temperature you have set the heat gun at?
Hi jess I have a iPad mini no backlight and no repair pulled apart had a blown backlight diode. Replaced diode then shorts remove diode and boots up with no backlight . I’m just learning board repairs any help would be great
Thanks
Jason from Australia
I find this interesting as I haven't done much BGA rework so just wondering, do you not have to reball the chip for reliable connection? I guess you just wipe solder over the pads of chip and board and what little bumps that gives is enough? Nice job though, well done!
This question is really important. So I will ask you--think about the underlying problem. What is the cause? Is it that the chip itself is good, but has a cold solder joint on some of the balls? Or is the chip itself bad? What from the history would make you think one over the other? You could reball the existing chip, or you could install a new chip (with new balls already on it). What would make you choose one strategy over the other?
+Jessa Jones Certainly the choice of action is key to the reliability of repair. I was really wondering if in this case you reballed the old one or just went for a quick fit to see if it was even going to work?
+Jonny Fix reballing a chip is only warranted if the underlying defect is suspected cold joints under the chip. This is unlikely in the case of a chip where the balls are protected and sealed to the chip with underfill. The only way that could be a possibility is if there was a bad drop. The video says this mini did not have a history of bad drop. This means the chip itself is dead. Reballing a dead chip will not bring it back to life. The only choice here is to replace the chip with a new chip.
+Jessa Jones oh my apologies, when the text came up that said you pulled pmic from second iPad mini I thought you were using that ic in this repair rather than a new one. Either way I look forward to trying this type of repair one day :)
hey can u help me with my ipad mini 4, its problem is wont turn on, wont charge wont reboot. how can i fix?
i have an A1432 that is doing the same thing, it has NO power. i've tried a bunch of different chargers and other things that Apple has told me to do. .... what does this repair cost?
thx, I think I have problems with my iPad mini 1 power ic, there is logo is and nothing else
do all mobile phones have definite voltages produced by the power management ic, and if so, what are they? thank you ...
ipad mini4 suddenly stopped working ???? connector on the board messed up ? any solution ?
can have question?? where did you buy your flux gel??
thanks
Hi, i have a iPad 4 no power on and when i connect to iTunes shows Recovery mode but not turn on at all, the display all ways is off. When i try to restore iTunes show me the 4013 error. Thanks a lot i love your videos, Sebastián from Argentina!
what was wrong with it? did you solved the problem?
Your videos are awesome and so informative. I just gave this a shot but could not get the ic to release. I was at 450 on my station which usually does just fine on most, but the underfill on this bad boy is strong. It took 500 to finally get it to let loose. Looks like I only pulled one pad that goes to a filter cap (c8208). What awg wire do you use for your pad repair? Do you flatten the end out at all? I have 36 and 40 on hand, do I need smaller?
Ignore your station numbers and go by feel. You weren't anywhere close to 500 C
I have a ipad 4 with same probem. Does not turn on, but when connected to the computer it goes directly into DFU Mode. Do you mean it could nevertheless the PMIC ? Ugly was that it turned on once. I didnt did anything for a few month and after that suddenly it showed me charging screen! But I guess the moment it was able to start it was dead as before. I tested it in another housing aswell, but there it didnt do anything... I hope you have an Idea for me... :)
how you have built the pads, can you show us?
Hola donde consigo esquemáticos ipad
First great job! I really would like to see how you made this micro jumpers. I got a hard time trying to solder these tiny wires in place and when placing the chip they mess up very easily...
How do you remove this dark yellow glue residue? its very sticky
Which flux are you using?
Maybe I will try another one sometime--I'm sure I will pull pads again!
+Jessa Jones
That would be great! but how about the yellow glue residue on the board when cleaning pads. How do you remove it? It gets very sticky sometimes.. Which flux are you using?
I have sent a customer to fix her dead Samsung S6(water damage and no power on), I hope you can help her on that. Her name is Robinson. She may call you today or tomorrow. By the way, what is the brand of your microscope? Thanks
would you give it a shoot with an ipad i have? it has the same problem. would you be able to fix it?
you are awesome! thank you!!!!!
I have an Ipad Mini (1) with black screen. It gets recognized on iTunes in DFU mode, I tried restoring it but gives me error and stopped because the ipad is not responding. (The screen never turned on) not even when restoring. Should I use this video as tutorial? or Is it a different problem? Thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.
did u solved your problem? if so how?
How many temperature are you using please ? Why you don't show the jumps you made please ? Thanks.
The clip for that was deleted on my machine. I use whatever temperature feels right. I don't attempt to calculate the temperature
iPad Rehab Thank you. May be i didn't choose the right words to speak about temperature, so, i was talking about the calibration of your hot air gun ! I think its near 200°C
Well over 200C since solder doesn't melt at 200C, and I don't measure temperature, it is more art than science for practical board repair.
I hav ipad just like that 1 that don't tune on how do I know if it`s the chip ? many thanks
nice effort boss lady
Good fob thanks.
hi may i know what is the glue call ? is it epoxy glue ?
excelente trabajo saludos desde venezuela
what temperature did you use and for how long?
what is compatible pmic of ipad mini 1
the Apple logo is on. it won't show the screen. please help me.
Pls help me. My ipad mini doesnt turn on after i was install and update ios 12, after verifying its not responsive. Huhuhu what i need to do. If i charged it it doesn't response also.
How much did you charge for this repair?
thank you
+Sofiane Mourad You're welcome!!
What type of solder flux/ paste you using?
Did you rebball the pmic
Thank you so much
nice job .dont think apple will like it.they tend to put potting compound on ics so make it impossible to repair so then they sell ya a new board.
i also have an ipad mini that does not turn on .what price would it cost to fix thanks
+KGP VLOG With the cost of the chip and the time/risk of this repair, we recommend buying a new mini
ok thank you,any u suggestion as to why the ipad no longer works thanks
Hi Jaessa I have an iPad mini it’s charging but no display not turning on and not detecting with iTunes or computer I tried everything even changing the battery but still nothing.
May I ask what is the problem.???
Alex did u get a fix ?
good job!
Great video. Thank you. I have an iPhone 6 with power IC that gets real hot after some water damage. Is a very hot PMIC always sign of short and need to replace PMIC? Or can something else cause the hot PMIC?
Could be PMIC but more likely short is somewhere else
+Jessa Jones So I freeze sprayed and see that the PMIC is the first place that gets hot ( 5S H20 damaged). So if there was a short somewhere else, it could still cause the PMIC to get hot???
+Tony Tone yes
+iPad Rehab Thank you ! I figured this out the hard way. I tried to remove it and still got the short.
I also am working on some other things where I find the whole string of caps is shorted. So I find the culprit and then the short jumps somewhere else; so I am guessing I have another short as well. Thank you thank you thank you for your reply means a lot to mean and I can learn alot from a simple yes or no : )
shorts are like a bad string of christmas lights. when one bulb is bad, the whole string is out.
What kind glue for that?
Round of applause.
hi can you send to me what flux kind you use? it's look good kind and thank you
+Noor elden Shashtari I use ChipQuik 291, but a lot of other microsolderers hate it
Hello my iPad mini gets hot when charging do you know what's the problem with it or can I get it fix ?
+lorenzo borja Heat = short. That can be pretty open ended, but iPad mini tends to get a short within the PMIC
you are amazing...
hello more or less the charge for the repair
+Ricardo Torres Flores This repair is a pain in the ass. It makes more sense to just buy a new iPad mini.
+iPad Rehab Same iPad Mini Problem after Charging. My Last Mini I Believe with this being so prevalent. My mini is 128G & Cost Close To $1000, Does Apple Do This Repair or Can New Board be Installed? Great Video with Close-Up view and Audio Narration Comments, Thanks! Walt
May i know how can u identify those dropped missing pads were (NC) non connector? I had bad experiences to dis solder Base Band ic with black tar gum, many pad was dropped when lifted up the ic. Please advice. Thank you..
Every missing pad that is important will show a torn trace, if not, it is NC. Zxwtool will confirm if you're not sure
Thanks for the reply, i had tried to practise transfer eprom ic (U6_RF) from death board to lock board, unlucky B3 (SPI_CS_L) and C3 (SPI_data_miso) were missing pad. Checked back it does not have any torn trace but tried to view schematic it has connections to Baseband IC.In this case is it consider as NC? Should I make a jumper to jump it directly to baseband ic A13(SPI_CS_L) and E14 (SPI_data_miso) ? Currently the board is no display, please advice.
WHY YOU USE USE IT FOR SO LONG AND IT BLACKS OUT FROM TEMPERATURE!!
which flux use you

I have an Ipad Air A1474 for repair from another repair company. The Ipad's digitizer was broken on the floor and suddenly at that time the Ipad was dead., could not be charged and was not recognized by Itunes. I received the Ipad stipped with a new digitizer to troubleshoot the problem. Lightning usb cable provided 4 Volt and this voltage was measured on 1 of the copper pads at the other side of the mobo underneath the power IC chip. However the battery did not get charged and I measured 2.8V on the battery (while voltage written on the battery is 3.7V). My questions are:
- do you suspect the power IC chip (does not get hot while when only charging cable and battery (with wires) was connected to the mobo).
- when you do suspect the power IC chip, can it be solved by reflowing the power IC chip ? Or do you advise, just replace it by a new one ?
Or do you think I need to do more troubleshooting first by measuring all the power rails first with the schematics and the test link drawing program ?
stop this reflow bS!
+iPad Rehab I also thought so that the problem will not be solved with a reflow. do you advise the ic chip to be replaced. chip does not get Hot with only battery and charging cable installed.
i wouldn't attempt to replace the iPad Air PMIC unless I had a much stronger reason. That is a $40 chip!
I was also thinking that, need to find out which points to check to really prove that it is the power management IC chip, which is defective. It's an expensive chip indeed, but with removing the chip in a not so proper way, can make it even more expensive. Thanks for your responses.
Tested the battery first with a mobo from A1475 Ipad Air and is working, battery will be charged up to 4.07V. Also with the fully charged battery from the A1475, nothing happens, Ipad does not start up. Nothing recognized in Itunes also. But the working A1475 mobo with the battery from A1474, does get recognized in Itunes. Measured all the components in between the battery and power IC and all have the correct values. Measured and compared all the test points underneath the power IC (are identical) from A1475 and A1474 mobo with only lighting usb connected and I see huge differences. Especially the PPVBUS_PROT which is 4V at A1474 mobo and 5V at A1475. Measured again at the lighting adapter female plug, also 4.0V and 5.0V. So I almost concluded that it is the power IC chip. But I do think it is strange that the power IC chip only gets 4.0V on the A1474 mobo (which does not start up) and gets 5.0V on the A1475 mobo (which is working). Do you know the minimum voltage the power IC needs, in order to work correctly ?
i need cercuit for ipad min ...

hi how are you i wont contact with you
wow
maam i m d first 1 to watch ur video.i m from INDIA.
u change the motherboard at 9:54
I did a bunch of mini PMIC chips that day. They are all the same. The iPad at the beginning is the same as the iPad at the end. The others were just practice donor boards. I never placed a new chip on them. Not sure if the clips I used here from the pulling chip and then pad clean up are all from that same mini or one of the donor boards, I just chose the best view since on some the chip was not under the microscope the whole time. this one had three microjumpers, and I didn't get a clip of putting the microjumpers in for the missing pads :( Just happy that this repair worked. I have had it in my pile since May!
