- As the years go on, MK7 Golf R's are becoming more obtainable to own. What use to cost 30-40K can now be found for under 15K. So when we saw this Golf R being sold for $2,500, we couldn't pass it up!

@@jeremyd826 That's great that it made 246k miles! But crank thrust washers falling out (as a common fault) is really bad. That shouldn't happen, right? I've never heard of thrust washers falling out on Honda K engines. Going by the hone marks that don't look factory, it looks like this EA888 has already been rebuilt at least once, which makes the 400k km less impressive.

@@kennorcott7074would really help in showing the support for the aftermarket parts, I really really really want to do a 3.6 FSI BFS or something similar without repinning a single fkn plug, I would hate to drive something I wired long distances.

real crap cars... i put 240k on my 2001 mk4, and after 18 years a turbo vacuum leak made my decision to replace it for me.
480k on my mk3.

That engine has been "rebuilt" before. You can see some of the hone marks in the cylinders have loops on them, like someone used honing stones on a cordless drill
So the “246k miles” mileage is not that impressive after all 😂

I got my first GTI about a year ago pre owned and I was kinda worried how long it’d would last, but seeing these pretty routinely hit 150-200k miles “modded”has been really comforting lmao, I don’t plan to go passed stage one on mine, but still really cool to see them be pretty reliable!

I thought @humblemechanic sold the engine already. The rear differential/Haldex is definitely gone because he used it in a repair job in a recent video. 🤔

@eppyz Engine was sold quite a while ago. It went into another 2019 R that had an engine failure.

For a new-ish car it is indeed a lot of mileage. They aren't built to survive that long.

Really good choice of content. There are so many MKVII owners that are very interested in seeing fixes for worst case scenario stuff.
Big turbo stage 2 TDI swap for power and fuel efficiency. Everyone has the regular old big turbo version. How many do the TDI swap? Buck the trend and be orginal. You can do it Paul and click the Charles install button at check out.
Whatever you do - and the big turbo sounds like a good idea (along with accompanying relevant upgrades) - please be sure to include a detailed breakdown of the engine. Really curious to see what the failure point(s) is/are. Btw - Whatever happened to that Jetta GLI you bought? Kinda curious to see how that project car turned out.

The Tow bar is a red light, maybe it did a bit of towing increases wear.

My R model is identical to this one and my GOD.. Ive never been so glad to live in a dry ass desert.. still havent reached 70k yet either. Good to kno itll hit 300k with proper upkeep too!
I am going to be following closly, I have a Mk7 R with glitter in the oil, that made a very similar sound to yours
DAPRepair installed an EQT Vortex and some of the supporting pre-requisites on my 2016 Golf R. This was just before WITW '19. In fact while at WITW '19 I chatted with Paul in line for the RBQ on how awesome the car was after 7 logs and flashes with EQT. Been quite reliable since. So I'd recommend EQT and whatever their latest is, the Vortex XL? I think. Maybe even multi-port fueling for a cherry on top.

Would be a mf to make a longitudinal 6 fit transversely, they don't come with the bolt holes for the mount on the front(for obvious reasons) BUT 3 mounting points don't sound half bad😂

you shoulda seen all the glitter and metal bits in a 2021 tiguan i replaced an engine,turbo and oil lines on. just over 30k miles. had 10k,20k&30k services done. the chunks in the oil pick up screen were much larger than this engine

I had to replace an engine recently because the previous owner decided it didn’t need servicing… for maybe 30,000km…. Starved the top end, seized the cams, snapped the cam chain at rear and Grenadad….
Time to get a Chinese motor on standby, Che aliexpress motors are about 3k for a full block and I’ve seen quite a bit of people throwing them in the Rs
As someone from the northeast the rust on the subframe and suspension components is absolutely heinous for a 10 year old car. Was really surprised when I saw it was THAT bad tbh

Yes. Rebuild it! I have the same car at just over 36k miles, 240k is nuts.
Tear down videos interest me more. Long time, Honda guy with a GTI about to run out of warranty. This gives me some hope for some form of longevity out of these cars.

My XC90 2003 is on 600.000 kilometres. MK1. 165 hp, not even 7 seat (it was optional in 2003). My '09 passat lasted 4 years tho. TSI power.
I had Mitsubishi Carisma '99 GDI, first GDI in europe lasted 300.000 kilometres then sold it for passat. Worst decision of my life.
Is the bearing failure related to the low compression? Could the low compression be related to any of the parts that were recently replaced? (I assume the fuel injectors have to do their part to maintain cylinder compression)
They say online Right Neal, you would be getting cross contamination of fluids and not to mention one hell of a racket! I was told with my truck having a low comp cylinder as well to add a lil oil in that cylinder and if the pressure jumped up it was rings and if it stayed the same it could be a bad valve or a hole/crack in the piston. My Mkiv Jetta Wagon was worse at 300k… but ran just fine. PD100 might have had its problems, but running at high miles wasn’t one one of them. Turbo diesel for the win… even if they are dead now. Blew a turbo at 255k… so I had a VNT17 put in with RC2 tune put in. Miss that car. At 300k I could hit 4,000rpm… and it would still pull. Stupid I was, selling it.
What is it with VWs and Cylinder #3 ? Once upon an air-cooled time, it was the oil cooler blocking airflow to #3. Since then it's just a brand tradition.
