Patches not only provided a body and removed a card from your deck, he also provided a PIRATE body which is important for pirate synergies. Like Warrior had 3 mana 3/4 that gave your weapon +1/1 if you control a pirate.
Also, if you went second, it's easy trades to control the board.

Patches wasn't good because it thins your deck.
Patches was cracked because its a free 1/1 with charge.
Imagine if Stonetusk Boar had "Start of Game: summon this card". In effect its a free draw, and mana. Mana and resources are tighter at the start of the game, so you'll almost always control the board by being able to kill an opposing 1-drop with it, while your 1-drop is still around, or if they don't have a 1-drop, punch them in the face, a lot. Often it either controls the board, letting you punch your opponent a lot, or it punches the opponent itself a lot. Awesome for aggro. The deck-thinning is effectively a non-factor, especially with the card-quality of constructed.

Yeah I agree that the deck thinning isn't the defining thing that makes the card broken but I also thought it was relevant enough to bring up and something people forgot about; especially looking back in the past when card draw wasn't as strong as it is today

@@ChauPau Not really. Thinning the has to be the MOST OVERRATED effect of all time. How am i so sure about it? Simple, because Prince Renathal was overpowered via having 10 health, despite the 10 card extra, which showcases the extra card is valued in less than 1 health, but more than 0.5 health considering now he's underpowered.
Considering Pure Paladin plays cards who hurt the face you can be sure that 2 or 3 health is acceptable if the tempo payoff is good enough, and with Patches is indeed insane tempo due to being a 0 mana 1|1 who draws 1 80% of the time (The 20% is when you drew patches). The thinner deck doesn't matter for aggro, only combo decks who don't want patches anyways since it has a sizable deck cost of playing at least 6 pirates, and considering Thief rogue used Renathal i can say even some combo-ish decks were willing to have inconsistency in exchange for a better matchup against aggro...

@@N12015 I agree that the best part of patches is that he summons a free 1/1 with charge, but I don't think that makes the deck thinning a non-factor for why patches was good at the time. I just wanted to mention another factor that made patches good for aggro decks in 2016. The decks you're talking about were made 6 years after patches was released so I don't think that's a fair comparison to make.
Things like card draw and healing were way more rare in the past compared to today. If you were to play aggro decks back then, top decking a weapon or a spell could mean the difference between winning and losing and therefore, you want your deck to be as thin as possible. But now, a free 1/1 with charge is pretty much ONLY good for the minion on the board because cards are just better now with all the healing and powerful spell effects. As the quality of cards gets better, the effects of patches should get worst because games aren't determined by what cards are in your deck, but now what you can discover and cheat for OUTSIDE of your main deck. Thus, making the deck thinning effect more of a non-factor in todays power level
