    Ibn Kathir, 47.20-23
(Verily, the womb is attached to the Throne. And connecting its ties does not mean dealing evenly (with the kinsfolk), but it rather means that if one's kinsfolk sever the ties, he connects them.) This Hadith was also recorded by Al-Bukhari. Ahmad also recorded from `Abdullah bin `Amr, may Allah be pleased with him, that Allah's Messenger said,
    «تُوضَعُ الرَّحِمُ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ لَهَا (حُجْنَةٌ كَحُجْنَةِ) الْمِغْزَلِ تَكَلَّمُ بِلِسَانٍ طَلِقٍ ذَلِقٍ، فَتَقْطَعُ مَنْ قَطَعَهَا وَتَصِلُ مَنْ وَصَلَهَا»
(The womb will be placed on the Day of Resurrection, curved like a spinning wheel, speaking with an eloquent fluent tongue, calling to severing whoever had severed it, and joining whoever had joined it.)

I was reminded of my post, Are the Houris Children?
The Quran in a number of passages calls the Houris Qasirat al-Tarf.
S 37:48 And with them are the Minors of the Gaze, 'in,
S 38:52 And with them the Minors of the Gaze, comrades.
S 55:56 Therein are the Minors of the Gaze; man has not made them menstruate before them nor jann.
Qasirat is the plural of qasirah, the feminine of qasir. Google Translate defines it minor; underage; small as an adjective and minor; child; infant; pupil as a noun. [translate .google .co .uk]
    Almaany defines it thus:
    قاصِر : - مَن لَمْ يَبْلُغ سِنّ الرُّشْد
    - A minor under the care of a guardian appointed by the parents or a court
    - Someone who is below the age at which they are considered by low to be an adult and completely responsible for their actions
    - minor; underage
    المختصر
    قاصِر : - قاصِرٌ عَلَى
    - limited to
    قاصِرٌ : - قاصِرٌ عن:عاجِزٌ عن
    - incapable of; unable to
    [almaany]
They are described as atrab, plural of tirb, in S 38:52. They are supposedly of the same age as the denizens of the Jannah.
    The Jalalayn say:
And with them there will be maidens of restrained glances restricting their eyes to their spouses of a like age of the same age girls who are thirty three years of age atrāb is the plural of tirb. [altafsir .com/Tafasir .asp?tMadhNo=0&tTafsirNo=74&tSoraNo=38&tAyahNo=52&tDisplay=yes&UserProfile=0&LanguageId=2]
    Definition of tirb:
    contemporary, coeval
    comrade, fellow, associate
    [wiktionary]
    Almaany:
    تِرْب : - التِّرْب:الْمُمَاثِل فِي السِّن
    - A person associated with another
    - Close friend (especially among schoolchildren)
    - Person equal in rank or capacity
    - Person of the same number of years
    - The person who is associated with another
    - Person who lives at the same period of time as someeone else
    المختصر
    تِرْب : - التِّرْب:الْمُمَاثِل فِي السِّن / الجمع أتْراب
    - Person of the same age - associate; coetaneous; contemporaneous; coeval; colleague; companion; contemporary; mate; fellow; equal; counterpart; peer; friend; match; comrade
    [almaany]
If the name Qasirat al-Tarf is not just a meaningless one, and if they are of equal age to those in the Jannah, then the latter must be children.

    From Chagigah 12b
Reish Lakish said: There are seven firmaments, and they are as follows: Vilon, Rakia, Sheḥakim, Zevul, Ma’on, Makhon, and Aravot. The Gemara proceeds to explain the role of each firmament: Vilon, curtain, is the firmament that does not contain anything, but enters at morning and departs in the evening, and renews the act of Creation daily, as it is stated: “Who stretches out the heavens as a curtain [Vilon], and spreads them out as a tent to dwell in” (Isaiah 40:22). Rakia, firmament, is the one in which the sun, moon, stars, and zodiac signs are fixed, as it is stated: “And God set them in the firmament [Rakia] of the heaven” (Genesis 1:17). Sheḥakim, heights, is the one in which mills stand and grind manna for the righteous, as it is stated: “And He commanded the heights [Sheḥakim] above, and opened the doors of heaven; and He caused manna to rain upon them for food, and gave them of the corn of heaven” (Psalms 78:23-24).

    My post, The Skies
We are told that the skies were built. In S 50:6 we read: So have they not looked at the sky above them, how we have built it and adorned it and it has no cracks?
S 51:47 And the sky, we built it with strength and we are able.
S 78:12 And we built above you seven strong.
S 91:5 By the sky and what built it,
S 79:27 Are you a harder creation or is the sky that he built?
    We read in Ibn Kathir:
Creating the Heavens and the Earth is more difficult than repeating Creation in refutation of the claim rejecting resurrection due to the renewal of creation after its original state, Allah says;ءَأَنتُمْ(Are you) `O people'أَشَدُّ خَلْقاً أَمِ السَّمَآءُ(more difficult to create or is the heaven...) meaning, `rather the heaven is more difficult to create than you.' As Allah said;لَخَلْقُ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ أَكْـبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ النَّاسِ(the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind;) [quranx .com/Tafsir/Kathir/79.27]
The (lowest) sky has no cracks. S 50:6 above,
S 67:3 The one who created seven skies in levels. You do not see any disparity in Al-Rahman’s creation. So return the eyesight. Do you see any cracks?
In S 69:16 we read of that sky's cracking: And the sky has split and it is on that day fragile. See also:
S 82:1 When the sky is cracked
The skies are held up by means of invisible columns. S 13:2 Allah is the one who raised the skies without columns that you see. Then he ascended the throne and subjected the sun and the moon, each running for a fixed term. He arranges the matter, he details the signs; perhaps you will be certain of the meeting of your lord.
The lowest sky is where the stars are located (!)
S 41:12 So he finished them as seven skies in two days and inspired in every sky its affair. And we adorned the lowest sky with lamps and as a defence. That is the determination of the mighty, the learned.
S 67:5 And we adorned the lowest sky with lamps and made them missiles for the devils and prepared for them the torture of the blaze.
The skies, seven in number, are solid structures that have been built and have no cracks, at least not yet, the stars located in the lowest, which are held up by means of invisible columns.
In the Talmud we read of seven firmaments.
Reish Lakish said: There are seven firmaments, and they are as follows: Vilon, Rakia, Sheḥakim, Zevul, Ma’on, Makhon, and Aravot. My post, St Paul and Islam
S 36:13-14 And coin for them a similitude of the companions of the village, when the commissaries came to it, When we sent two to them but they called them liars so we strengthened with a third and they said: We are commissaries to you.
Ibn Kathir in looking at this mentions a particular tradition: (a similitude; the Dwellers of the Town, when there came Messengers to them.) In the reports that he transmitted from Ibn `Abbas, Ka`b Al-Ahbar and Wahb bin Munabbih - Ibn Ishaq reported that it was the city of Antioch, in which there was a king called Antiochus the son of Antiochus the son of Antiochus, who used to worship idols. Allah sent to him three Messengers, whose names were Sadiq, Saduq and Shalum, and he disbelieved in them. It was also narrated from Buraydah bin Al-Husayb, `Ikrimah, Qatadah and Az-Zuhri that it was Antioch. Some of the Imams were not sure that it was Antioch, as we shall see below after telling the rest of the story, if Allah wills.إِذْ أَرْسَلْنَآ إِلَيْهِمُ اثْنَيْنِ فَكَذَّبُوهُمَا(When We sent to them two Messengers, they denied them both;) means, they hastened to disbelieve in them.فَعَزَّزْنَا بِثَالِثٍ(so We reinforced them with a third,) means, `We supported and strengthened them with a third Messenger. ' Ibn Jurayj narrated from Wahb bin Sulayman, from Shu`ayb Al-Jaba'i, "The names of the first two Messengers were Sham`un and Yuhanna, and the name of the third was Bulus, and the city was Antioch (Antakiyah). [quranx .com/Tafsir/Kathir/36.13]
Sham'un is Simon, Yuhanna John and Bulus Paul.
In this from Islamport we read:
{And coin for them} Relate to them the story, as his statement: {And coin for them a similitude of two men} [Al-Kahf 32] {The companions of the village} The people of Antioch (3) {When we sent to them two} During the time of Isa (as) (1) And they were Tuman and Bulus (4) And they were of the Hawariyun, [islamport .com/l/tfs/6417/1434 .htm]
    Thomas and Paul.
From Al-Bidayah Wal-Nihayah by Ibn Kathir:
And there was of those who believed in the Messiah and confirmed him of the people of Damascus a man called Dina and he was hidden in a cave inside the eastern gate near the Crucifixion Church for fear of Paul the Jew and he was unjust, oppressive, averse from the Messiah, and when he brought him and he had shaved the head of his brother's son when he had believed in the Messiah and went about with him in the country. Then he stoned him until he died, Allah's mercy! And when Paul heard that the Messiah (as) had gone towards Damascus he prepared his mule and went out to kill him and met him by Kawkaba, and when he confronted the Messiah's companions, an angel came to him and struck his face with the tip of his wing and blinded him. And when he saw that he fell into himself confirming the Messiah, and he came to him and apologised for what he had done and believed in him and received from him and asked him to wipe his eyes that Allah might restore his sight to him, and he said, Go to Dina by you in Damascus at the edge of the rectangular market from the rising place and he will invoke for you, and he came to him and invoked and his sight was restored to him and Paul's faith in the Messiah (as) was good that he was Allah's slave and his messenger and a church was built for him in his name and it is the famous Paul's Church in Damascus from the time that the companions (raa) opened it until it was destroyed.

    From the Answering Islam Blog:
In Alfred Guillaume’s translation of Ibn Ishaq’s Sirat Rasulullah titled The Life of Muhammad (Oxford University Press Karachi) we find the following positive endorsement of Paul:
“God has sent me (Muhammad) to all men, so take a message from me, God have mercy on you. Do not hang back from me as the disciples hung back from Jesus son of Mary. They asked how they hung back and he said, ‘He called them to a task similar to that which I have called you. Those who had to go a short journey were pleased and accepted. Those who had a long journey before them were displeased and refused to go, and Jesus complained of them to God. (T. From that very night) every one of them was able to speak the language of the people to whom he was sent.’ (T. Jesus said, ‘This is a thing that God has determined that you should do, so go.’)
“Those whom Jesus son of Mary sent, both disciples and those who came after them, in the land were: Peter the disciple AND PAUL WITH HIM, (PAUL BELONGED TO THE FOLLOWERS AND WAS NOT A DISCIPLE) to Rome. Andrew and Matthew to the land of the cannibals; Thomas to the land of Babel, which is in the land of the east; Philip to Carthage and Africa; John to Ephesus the city of the young men of the cave; James to Jerusalem which is Aelia the city of the sanctuary; Bartholomew to Arabia which is the land of Hijaz; Simon to the land of Berbers; Judah who was not one of the disciples was put in place of Judas.” (Ibid. p. 653; bold and capital emphasis mine)
Other Muslim sources that affirm the preceding statement include:
“Among the apostles and those disciples around them, whom Jesus sent out, there were Peter and his companion Paul.” (Thalabii, Qisas al-Anbiyaa, pp. 389-390)
    And,
“Among the apostles, and the followers who came after them were the Apostle Peter and Paul who was a follower and not an apostle; they went to Rome. Andrew and Matthew were sent to the country whose people are man-eaters, a land of blacks, we think; Thomas was sent to Babylonia in the east, Philip to Qayrawan (and) Carthage, that is, North Africa. John went to Ephesus, the city of the youths of the cave, and James to Jerusalem, that is, Aelia. Bartholomew was sent to Arabia, namely, the Hijaz; Simeon to the land of the Berbers in Africa. Judas was not then an apostle, so his place was taken by Ariobus. He filled in for Judas Iscariot after the latter had perpetrated his deed.” (History, Volume IV, p. 123; bold emphasis mine)
The translator, Moshe Perlmann, comments on the above statement that Paul was not an apostle:
    317. In Islamic terms the messengers or apostles pave the new path. Their work is continued by the tabi’un, the followers, members of the next generations, who lead the Faithful. (Ibid.)
According to Islam’s premiere historian Paul was a faithful follower of the Apostles, especially the Apostle Peter. In fact, al-Tabari lists Paul as one of those martyred for the faith:
“Abu Ja’far says: They assert that after Tiberius, Palestine and other parts of Syria were ruled by Gaius, son of Tiberius, for four years. He was succeeded by another son, Claudius, for fourteen years, following which Nero ruled for fourteen years. He slew Peter and crucified Paul head down. For four months Botlaius [Vittelius] ruled thereafter. Then Vespasian, father of Titus whom he sent to Jerusalem, ruled for ten years. Three years after his rise to power, forty years after the ascension of Jesus, Vespasian sent Titus to Jerusalem. Titus destroyed it and slew numerous Israelites in his wrath over the fate of Christ…” (Ibid., p. 126; bold emphasis mine) St. Paul in Islam - Answering Islam Blog

    @Thaddeus
You mention that if people hear about the expanse of the universe then they are temporarily shaken in their theism. The reason you give for that is that people react to the knowledge by thinking, if the universe is large, it also means it is unlikely that they have the correct view.
I always thought it was the other way around.
There are many people who react with awe to the universe and the size of it. This makes them think that great things are out there, much greater than humans. If they already belief in a great god, they think this god is all the more great.
People who think they know how the world is set up usually don't change their mind on that depending on the size of the universe. They may feel a bit more humble on the specifics on their overall view, but they won't change the fundamentals.
I don't think astronomy ever changed my worldview on an emotional level. It did give some rational reasons for (finetuning argument) and against (starlight problem) my childhood beliefs. But the size itself never changed much.

From, Quran on Fearing Allah and the Wombs
    Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet said, "Allah created the creations, and when He finished from His creations, Ar-Rahm, i.e., WOMB, SAID, ‘(O Allah) at this place I seek refuge with You from all those who sever me (i.e. sever the ties of Kith and kin).’ Allah said, ‘Yes, won’t you be pleased that I will keep good relations with the one who will keep good relations with you, and I will sever the relation with the one who will sever the relations with you?’ IT SAID, ‘Yes, O my Lord.’ Allah said, ‘Then that is for you.’" Allah's Apostle added. "Read (in the Qur'an) if you wish, the Statement of Allah: ‘Would you then, if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land and sever your ties of kinship?’ (47.22)" (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 8, Book 73, Number 16)
    And:
    Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "Allah created the creation, and when He finished from His creation the Rahm (womb) GOT UP, and Allah said (to it): ‘Stop! What do you want?’ IT SAID: ‘At this place I seek refuge with You from all those who sever me (i.e. sever the ties of Kinship.)’ Allah said: ‘Would you be pleased that I will keep good relation with the one who will keep good relation with you, and I will sever the relation with the one who will sever the relation with you?’ IT SAID: ‘Yes, ‘O my Lord.’ Allah said (to it), ‘That is for you.’" And then Abu Huraira recited the Verse:-- "Would you then if you were given the authority, do mischief in the land, and sever your ties of kinship." (47.22) (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 93, Number 593)
Ibn Kathir cites a particular narration which states that this specific womb actually clutched Allah’s lower garment!
    ...
This involves a general prohibition of spreading corruption on earth, and a specific prohibition of severing the ties of kinship. In fact, Allah has commanded the people to establish righteousness on earth, as well as to join the ties of kinship by treating the relatives well in speech, actions, and spending wealth in charity. Many authentic and sound Hadiths have been reported through numerous routes of transmission from Allah's Messenger in this regard. Al-Bukhari recorded from Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, that Allah's Messenger said...
Abu Hurayrah then added, "Read if you wish...
Then Al-Bukhari recorded it with another wording which states that the Messenger of Allah said...
Muslim also recorded it. Imam Ahmad recorded from Abu Bakrah, that Allah's Messenger said...
This was also recorded by Abu Dawud, At-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah. At-Tirmidhi said, "This Hadith is Sahih.'' Imam Ahmad recorded from Thawban that Allah's Messenger said...
Ahmad was alone in recording this narration, but it has a supporting narration in the Sahih. Imam Ahmad recorded from `Abdullah bin `Amr that Allah's Messenger said...

I was reminded of my post, To Do Wudu Or Not to Do Wudu?
    Is wudu required after urinating?
    2.2 Things which break wudu'
    2.2a. Excreta which oblige wudu'
You have to do wudu' after urinating or defecating or passing wind.
[This clarifies what excreta which make wudu' necessary: urine from the front orifice and faeces from the rear orifice and passing wind, which designates wind which emerges from the anus, whether or not with a sound. As for wind which emerges from the penis or vagina, it does not require wudu' since it is not considered as one of things which break wudu'.] RisWudu2 (Page 1)
Regarding farting, see my post Farting
It was narrated that Abu Hayyah al-Wadi`i said:
I saw ‘Ali (رضي الله عنه) urinate in ar-Rahbah, then he called for water and did wudoo’. He washed his hands three times, rinsed his mouth and nose three times, washed his face three times, washed his forearms three times each, wiped his head and washed his feet three times each. Then he said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) do as you have seen me do.
    [ahmad:1350]
Ali did wudu after relieving himself.
Yahya related to me from Malik from Nafi that Abdullah ibn Umar urinated in the market place and then did wudu, washing his face and hands and wiping his head. Then as soon as he had come into the mosque, he was called to pray over a dead person, so he wiped over his leather socks and prayed.
Muwatta Malik Book 2, Hadith 44
Ibn Umar did wudu after urinating in the market place.
    Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cae out from the toilet and some food was brought to him. They said: 'Shall we bring you some water for Wudu'?' He said: 'I have only been ordered to perform Wudu' when standing for Salat.'"
[Abu 'Eisa said:] This Hadith is Hasan [Sahih]. 'Amr bin Dinar has reported it from Sa'eed bin Al-Huwairith, from Ibn 'Abbas. 'Ali bin Al-Madini said: 'Sufyan Ath-Thawri disliked washing the hands before eating food, and he disliked placing the bread under the bowl.'"
    [tirmidhi:1847]
It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out to toilet, then food was brought. A man said:
“O Messenger of Allah, are you not going to perform ablution?” He said: ‘Am I going to pray?’
    Sunan Ibn Majah 3261
Allah's boss didn't do wudu after urinating or defecating.

Mushrik is often translated 'polytheist', although that is not its meaning. Regarding a Muslim's wanting to marry a Christian, who supposedly practises shirk/'or supposedly is a polytheist,we may read this: S 2:221 "And do not futter the mushrikat until they believe. And a believing maid is better than a mushrikah even if she has pleased you. And do not give to the mushrikun in nikah until they believe, and a believing slave is better than a mushrik even if he has pleased you. Those call to the fire and Allah calls to the Jannah and forgiveness with his permission. And he clarifies his verses for people; perhaps they will remember." In a number of passages quran makes a distinction between the 'People of the Book' and mushrikun. My post, The People of the Book and the Mushrikun
S 2:105 Those who have disbelieved of the People of the Book do not like, nor the mushrikun, that any good should be sent down upon you from your lord. And Allah favours with his mercy whom he wills. And Allah is the possessor of the great favour.
S 98:1 Those who had disbelieved of the People of the Book and of the mushrikun were not to be dissolved until the proof should come to them,
S 98:6 Those who have disbelieved of the People of the Book and of the mushrikun are in the fire of Jahannam, abiding therein indefinitely. Those--they are the worst of creatures.
A distinction is being made in these verses between the 'People of the Book' (Christians and Jews) and mushrikun, often translated 'polytheists'.
We may add S 5:82 You will find the strongest of people in enmity to those who have believed the Jews and those who have associated; and you will find the nearest of them in affection to those who have believed those who have said: We are Nasara. That is because among them are priests and monks and that they are not arrogant.
    and
S 22:17 Those who have believed and those who were Jewish and the Sabians and the Magians and those who have associated, Allah judges between them on the day of resurrection. Allah is a witness over everything.

    My post, Oh, That's Hard!
S 79:27 Are you a harder creation or is the sky that he built?
    Ibn Kathir:
Creating the Heavens and the Earth is more difficult than repeating Creation in refutation of the claim rejecting resurrection due to the renewal of creation after its original state, Allah says;ءَأَنتُمْ(Are you) `O people'أَشَدُّ خَلْقاً أَمِ السَّمَآءُ(more difficult to create or is the heaven...) meaning, `rather the heaven is more difficult to create than you.' As Allah said;لَخَلْقُ السَّمَـوَتِ وَالاٌّرْضِ أَكْـبَرُ مِنْ خَلْقِ النَّاسِ(the creation of the heavens and the earth is greater than the creation of mankind;) (40:57) Ibn Al Kathir commentary for verses 79.27-33

    My post, Music and singing
It was narrated from Abu Malik Ash’ari that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
“People among my nation will drink wine, calling it by another name, and musical instruments will be played for them and singing girls (will sing for them). Allah will cause the earth to swallow them up, and will turn them into monkeys and pigs.”
    [ibnmajah/36/95]
    Narrated Aisha:
Abu Bakr came to my house while two small Ansari girls were singing beside me the stories of the Ansar concerning the Day of Buath. And they were not singers. Abu Bakr said protestingly, "Musical instruments of Satan in the house of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) !" It happened on the `Id day and Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "O Abu Bakr! There is an `Id for every nation and this is our `Id."
    [bukhari/13/4]
Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:
The bell is the musical instrument of the Satan.
    [muslim/37/159]
It was narrated that Aishah said:
"Al-Harith bin Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): 'How does the Revelation come to you?' He said: 'Like the ringing of a bell, and when it departs I remember what he (the Angel) said, and this is the hardest on me. And sometimes he (the Angel) comes to me in the form of a man and gives it to me.'"
    [nasai/11/58]
It is widely believed that the 'Zabur' is the Book of Psalms, a book of songs with musical direction. The Quran actually 'quotes' from it. See: Zabur/Zubur Did Allah once approve of music and singing then began to hate it? If so, why is the Quran, that 'detailed' book, silent regarding it?
In this hadith a black slave wants to play the drum for her master:
    Narrated Buraidah:
"The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out for one of his expeditions, then when he came back, a black slave girl came to him and said: 'O Messenger of Allah! I took an oath that if Allah returned you safely, I would beat the Duff before you and sing.' So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said to her: 'If you have taken an oath, then beat it, and if you have not then do not.' So she started to beat the Duff, and Abu Bakr entered while she was beating it. Then 'Ali entered while she was beating it, then 'Uthman entered while she was beating it. Then 'Umar entered, so she put the Duff under her, and sat upon it. So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: 'Indeed Ash-Shaitan is afraid of you O 'Umar! I was sitting while she beat it, and then Abu Bakr entered while she was beating it, then 'Ali entered while she was beating it, then 'Uthman entered while she was beating it, then when you entered O 'Umar and she put away the Duff.'
[urn/635680] If the drum is evil, why did he allow her to play it? At this point not even Abu Bakr appears to have anything against it. This was probably before the founder of Islam communicated the idea that music was evil to the ummah.

The word translated "musical instrument" is the word mazamir مَزَامِيرُ, which is the word used in the Arabic Bible for the Psalms.
It was narrated that Aishah said:
"Al-Harith bin Hisham asked the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ): 'How does the Revelation come to you?' [abudawud:2555]
    Narrated Buraidah:

The Zabur is supposedly the Book of Psalms, a book of songs with musical directions, so why would Allah suddenly go nuts and start hating singing and music?

My post, Where is the Heart Located?
In this short post we shall be looking at S 33:4. Allah has not made for a man two hearts in his abdomen nor has he made your husbands whom you pronounce zihar upon your mothers. Nor has he made your adopted sons your sons. That is your speech with your mouths but Allah tells the truth. And he guides to the way.
The word translated 'abdomen' is jawf. A dictionary defines it thus:
    جَوْف : - تَجْوِيف، فُتْحَة، نُقْرَة
    - An empty space in something solid
    - Small hole within a solid body
    - A hole in the surface of a road
    - A space in something that allows things to get through it
    - Deep track made by a wheel or wheels in soft ground
    - Long narrow cut or depression in the surface of hard material
    - Cavity of bone
    - aperture; furrow
    المختصر
    جَوْف : - بَطْن، خِلافُ الظَّهْر
    - Part of the body below the chest and diaphragm - belly; venter
    جَوْف : - باطِنُ البَطْن
    - Part of the body below the chest and diaphragm - coelom
    جَوْف : - داخِل، باطِن، بَطْن
    - Part of the body below the chest and diaphragm - inside; interior; heart; abdomen
    جَوَّفَ ( فعل ): - صَيَّرَهُ أَجْوَف، قَعَّرَ
    - make hollow
    جَوّفَ ( فعل ): - نَقَرَ
    - bore; dig; drill; hole; pierce; pit
    جَوّفَ ( فعل ): - قَوّرَ
    - cavern out; scoop out; cave; excavate; gouge
    جَوفَ ( فعل ): - كانَ أَجوَف
    - be hollow
    Translation and Meaning of جوف
In the Arabic Bible the word is used of the belly of the marine creature that swallowed Jonah.

My post, Torture of the Grave
    'A'isha reported:
The Prophet (ﷺ) entered my house when a Jewess was with me and she was saying: Do you know that you would be put to trial in the grave? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) trembled (on hearing this) and said: It is the Jews only who would-be put to trial. 'A'isha said: We passed some nights and then the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Do you know that it has been revealed to me:" You would be put to trial in the grave"? 'A'isha said: 1 heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) seeking refuge from the torment of the grave after this.
    [muslim:584]
    'Aishah said:
"A Jewish woman entered unto me and said: 'The torment of the grave is because of urine.' I said: 'You are lying.' She said: 'No, it is true; we cut our skin and clothes because of it.' The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) went out to pray and our voices became loud. He said: 'What is this?' So I told him what she had said. He said: 'She spoke the truth.' After that day he never offered any prayer but he said, following the prayer: 'Rabba Jibril wa Mika'il wa Israfil, aiding min harrin-nar wa 'adhabil-qabr (Lord of Jibril, Mika'il and Israfil, grant me refuge from the heat of the Fire and the torment of the grave).'"
    [nasai:1345]
    'A'isha reported:
There came to me two old women from the old Jewesses of Medina and said: The people of the grave are tormented in their graves. I contradicted them and I did not deem it proper to testify them. They went away and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) came to me and I said to him: Messenger of Allah I there came to me two old women from the old Jewesses of Medina and asserted that the people of the graves would be tormented therein. He (the Prophet) said: They told the truth; they would be tormented (so much) that the animals would listen to it. She ('A'isha) said: Never did I see him (the Holy Prophet) afterwards but seeking refuge from the torment of the grave in prayer.
    [muslim:586a]
It was narrated that Abu Hurairah said:
"The Messenger of Allah said: 'Most of the torment of the grave is because of urine.'"
    [ibnmajah:348]
Ibn ‘Abbas told that the Prophet came upon two graves and said, "Their occupants are being punished, but not for a great sin. One of them did not keep himself from being defiled by urine. (A version by Muslim has "did not keep himself undefiled by urine”.) The other went about spreading slander.” He then took a fresh palm branch, split it in two parts, and planted one on each grave. On being asked why he did this, he said, "Perhaps their punishment may be mitigated as long as they remain fresh.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)
    [mishkat:338]
    Narrated Amr ibn al-'As:
AbdurRahman ibn Hasanah reported: I and Amr ibn al-'As went to the Prophet (ﷺ). He came out with a leather shield (in his hand). He covered himself with it and urinated. Then we said: Look at him. He is urinating as a woman does. The Prophet (ﷺ), heard this and said: Do you not know what befell a person from amongst Banu Isra'il (the children of Israel)? When urine fell on them, they would cut off the place where the urine fell; but he (that person) forbade them (to do so), and was punished in his grave.
Abu Dawud said: One version of Abu Musa has the wording: "he cut off his skin".
Another version of Abu Musa goes: "he cut off (part of) his body."
    [abudawud:22]
Now you can understand the concept of 'chibut hakever' [torments of the grave]. After a person dies and is buried in the dust of the earth, four angels immediately arrive and deepen his grave to the height of the man1, as it says in treatise Perek Chibut Hakever. Then they restore his soul to his body just like during his lifetime, since the kelipa remains connected to both.
Then these angels take him by the corners and shake and beat him with fire...
Then these angels take him by the corners and shake and beat him with fire - just as a garment is held from the ends and shaken to remove dust2 - until the kelipa leaves him completely. This is called chibut hakever, which is like the beating and shaking of a garment. They deepen the grave in order to create an area within which to shake and beat him.
However, the judgment is not the same for everyone. Righteous people distance themselves from the yetzer hara during their lifetimes and humble themselves and use their suffering as self-affliction. Torah and mitzvot as well weaken the kelipot until the day comes for them to die. Such righteous people do not need much suffering, just a minor beating to separate the yetzer hara from them.
It is just the opposite for evil people. Through indulging in the pleasures of this world they become even more strongly connected to the kelipa of their bodies and souls. This is the secret of why a person is not saved from chibut hakever, as mentioned in Perek Chibut Hakever.
...there is no other way to remove and rectify other than through death and chibut hakever.
As we said regarding those people who died only because of the bite of the snake, there is no other way to remove and rectify other than through death and chibut hakever. The only exception is for those people mentioned in Perek Chibut Hakever who performed certain mitzvot which accomplish this. However, the rest require chibut hakever and it is only a question of how much will be necessary. Each person receives what he needs based upon the level of his kelipa and the extent to which it adheres to him.
However, even for those people who do not require chibut hakever, having performed specific mitzvot that remove the kelipa without the need for suffering after death, death is still inevitable, as we mentioned regarding those who died from the "bite of the snake."

    My post, Regarding Abrogation
S 2:106 What we abrogate from a verse or cause it to be forgotten we bring better than it or the like of it. Have you not known that Allah is mighty over everything?
S 22:52 And we did not send before you any messenger or prophet but when he desired the Devil threw into his desire, and Allah abrogates what the Devil throws then Allah establishes his verses. And Allah is learned, wise.
In the first verse we are not told that Allah abrogates its own verses. In the second we read that Allah abrogates what the Devil throws (present tense) into the messenger’s or prophet’s desire. Definition of abrogation: the repeal or abolition of a law, right, or agreement. (Google)
So were Satan’s castings law, something that might be repealed? Are Satan’s utterings on the same level as Allah’s?
    Definition for nasakha:
    to abolish
    to delete
    to abrogate, to invalidate
to repeal, to revoke, to withdraw
    to cancel
    to substitute, to replace
    to transcribe, to copy [wiktionary]
Side note: In S 53:2-3 we read: Your companion has not strayed nor enticed, Nor does he speak from desire.
But in S 22:52 above we read: but when he desired the Devil threw into his desire,
One further thought: Does the 'clear' messenger’s speech actually say that what the messengers and prophets uttered was simply their desire? If so, where would Allah’s word fit in before it were established? Is the Quran largely what ‘Muhammad’ desired? But when Satan threw its verses in, Allah abrogated them and put in its own? Is the Quran a mixture of ‘Muhammad’’s and Allah’s words, his desire and its verses? As we read that “Allah abrogates [present tense] what the Devil throws [present tense] then Allah establishes [present tense] his verses”, it looks like it was more than the Satanic Verses that the Devil threw.

    My post, On Golden Pond
In this post we shall be looking at Allah's throne. Allah's throne we are told is on 'the' water. What water this is, we are not told.
S 11:7 And he is the one who created the skies and the Earth in six days. And his throne was on the water to test you, which of you is best in deed. But if you say: You are raised after death, those who have disbelieved will say: This is nothing but obvious magic.
In the verse, it was on the water.
Abdallah b. 'Amr reported God’s messenger as saying, “God recorded the fates of all creatures 50,000 years before creating the heavens and the earth, and His throne was upon the water.” Muslim transmitted it.
    [mishkat:79]
    Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "The Right (Hand) of Allah Is full, and (Its fullness) is not affected by the continuous spending night and day. Do you see what He has spent since He created the Heavens and the Earth? Yet all that has not decreased what is in His Right Hand. His Throne is over the water and in His other Hand is the Bounty or the Power to bring about death, and He raises some people and brings others down." (See Hadith No. 508)
    [bukhari:7419]
    Narrated Waki' bin Hudus:
from his uncle Abu Razin who said: "I said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Where was our Lord before He created His creation?' He said: 'He was (above) the clouds - no air was under him, no air was above him, and He created His Throne upon the water.'"
Ahmad [bin Mani'] said: "Yazid bin Harun said (regarding) the air - 'It means there was nothing with him."
    [tirmidhi:3109]
If there are clouds, are they uncreated? Is the water? Of course, the idea of 'the water' is derived from Genesis in which we read that God's Spirit hovered over the surface of the water (Genesis 1). But did Allah's boss think that it was the sea? See below.
Satan too has a throne. From an Answering Islam article:
The reason why this happens to be the most fascinating aspect of Allah’s throne is because, according to the same so-called authentic ahadith, Satan’s throne is also located upon the water!
Jabir reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (way peace be upon him) as saying: The throne of Iblis is upon the ocean and he sends detachments (to different parts) in order to put people to trial and the most important figure in his eyes is one who is most notorious in sowing the seed of dissension. (Sahih Muslim, Book 039, Number 6754)
    And:
Jabir reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Iblis places his throne upon water; he then sends detachments (for creating dissension); the nearer to him in tank are those who are most notorious in creating dissension. One of them comes and says: I did so and so. And he says: You have done nothing. Then one amongst them comes and says: I did not spare so and so until I sowed the seed of discord between a husband and a wife. The Satan goes near him and says: You have done well. A'mash said: He then embraces him. (Sahih Muslim, Book 039, Number 6755)
    Finally:
Abu Sa'id reported that Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) met him (Ibn Sayyad) and so did Abu Bakr and 'Umar on some of the roads of Medina. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Do you bear testimony to the fact that I am the Messenger of Allah? Thereupon he said: Do you bear testimony to the fact that I am the messenger of Allah? Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: I affirm my faith in Allah and in His Angels and in His Books, and what do you see? He said: I see the throne over water. Whereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: You see the throne of Iblis upon the water, and what else do you see? He said: I see two truthfuls and a liar or two liars and one truthful. Thereupon Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Leave him He has been confounded. (Sahih Muslim, Book 041, Number 6992)
With the foregoing in view does this mean that Satan is a co-occupant of Allah’s throne, that he and Allah share the same throne? In fact, can a Muslim cite a supposed authentic text stating that there are other individuals besides Allah and Satan that have a throne situated upon the water?
Or should we interpret this to mean that Satan expelled Allah from his throne upon the water and now has control over creation?
Worse still, should we actually see this as further proof that the Allah of Islam is actually the Devil masquerading as god? It seems so, especially when we take into consideration that the Quran boasts that Allah is the best deceiver/schemer/trickster/conniver/cheat of them all and that he perverts/misguides/corrupts people in the same way that Satan does (*; *; *). Satan on Allah's throne
Ibn Sayyad appears to have been a mystic. See Islam Critiqued's videos.
Now, if Satan's throne is on the ocean or sea, is Allah's? Did the sea always exist? Is Allah's throne like a boat or a ship floating in the sea? The word bahr can mean a large river. Is Allah like a frog sitting on a lily pad? As eight angels supposedly carry it, how might they do so? Do they somehow swim with it above their heads? A Look at S 69:17
    In this hadith we read:
"The Prophet (ﷺ) added, "Then I will go beneath Allah's Throne and fall in prostration before my Lord."
    [bukhari:4712]
From being ABOVE the throne Allah would now be BELOW it? If the throne is on water, would Allah's boss be wearing SCUBA gear? Is Allah a fish? Is it like the Man from Atlantis?
    On or Above the Throne?
Jibril supposedly appeared to Allah's boss in the air, on 'the' throne.
    Yahya reported:
I asked Abu Salama what was revealed first from the Qur'an. He said:" 0, the shrouded one." I said: Or" Recite." Jabir said: I am narrating to you what was narrated to us by the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ). He said: I stayed in Hira' for one month and when my stay was completed, I come down and went into the heart of the valley. Somebody called me aloud. I looked in front of me, behind me, on the right of my side and on my left, but I did not see any body. I was again called and I looked about but saw nothing. I was called again and raised my head, and there on the Throne in the open atmosphere he, i. e. Gabriel (peace be upon him) was sitting. I began to tremble on account of fear. I came to Khadija and said: Wrap me up. They wrapped me up and threw water on me and Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, sent down this: you who are shrouded! arise and deliver warning, your Lord magnify, your clothes cleanse."
    [muslim:161d]
As the article is used before 'throne', it's a specific throne. Whose? Would it not be Allah's? If this was Jib, what was he doing on Allah's throne? And if this throne was in the air, did it fly?

... There are seven earths. The first is called Ramaka, beneath which is the Barren Wind, which can be bridled by no fewer than seventy thousand angels. With this wind God destroyed the people of Ad. The inhabitants of Ramaka are a nation called Muwashshim, upon whom is everlasting torment and divine retribution. The second earth is called Khalada, wherein are the implements of torture for the inhabitants of Hell. There dwells a nation called Tamis, whose food is their own flesh and whose drink is their own blood. The third earth is called Arqa, wherein dwell mulelike eagles with spearlike tails. On each tail are three hundred and sixty poisonous quills. Were even one quill placed on the face of the earth, the entire universe would pass away. The inhabitants thereof are a nation called Qays, who eat dirt and drink mothers' milk. The fourth earth is called Haraba, wherein dwell the snakes of Hell, which are as large as mountains. Each snake has fangs like tall palm trees, and if they were to strike the hugest mountain with their fangs it would be leveled to the ground. The inhabitants of this earth are a nation called Jilla, and they have no eyes, hands or feet but have wings like bats and die only of old age. The fifth earth is called Maltham, wherein stones of sulphur hang around the necks of infidels. When the fire is kindled the fuel is placed on their breasts, and the flames leap up onto their faces, as He hath said: The fire whose fuel is men and stones (2:24), and Fire shall cover their faces (14:50). The inhabitants are a nation called Hajla, who are numerous and who eat each other. The sixth earth is called Sijjin. Here are the registers of the people of Hell, and their works are vile, as He hath said: Verily the register of the actions of the wicked is surely Sijjin (83:7). Herein dwells a nation called Qatat, who are shaped like birds and worship God truly. The seventh earth is called Ajiba and is the habitation of Iblis. There dwells a nation called Khasum, who are BLACK and short, with claws like lions. It is they who will be given dominion over Gog and Magog, who will be destroyed by them… (Tales of the Prophets-Qisas al-anbiya, trans. Wheeler M.
