This was a very well put talk about British pennies. As a child before the introduction of Decimal Currency on 15th February 1971 I remember these coins being in circulation, occasionally I would retrieve a Victorian bun penny and although they would usually be quite worn they were always worth more than face value. These old pennies are works of art and are always well worth collecting. The Britannia design has been on coins since Roman times, and has evolved quite a lot. A Britannia on a King Charles ll coin will show the style of the times, as compared to the design which is on either the King George Vl Or Elizabeth ll Penny which is more modernistic. This video is very educational and I hope it will encourage more to seek out and enjoy the beauty of studying and collecting coins.
The modernized Britannia was designed to appear on the reverse of Edward VIII, but after his abdication, appeared on George VI. Edward liked the idea of Modernism and even broke tradition of refusing to face opposite his father. I would not be surprised if he was behind the Britannia update.
I noticed the reverse side is different on some of them. The old Victoria pennys have a lighthouse to the left of Britannia and a sailing ship to her right. Then these disappear, then only the lighthouse reappears on later pennys.
In the newest penny, canadian pennies have the same design on the back except she is not wearing the crown, either way all the other queen and king designs were the same.
One thing I notice between the 1891 to 1897 is that the ship (to the right) and lighthouse (to the left of the roman woman) has disappeared but the lighthouse returns later in 1900's. Does anyone know why the ship disappeared during this period and whether it had anything to do with overseas tensions such as those developing in the Boer War?
The ship and lighthouse disappear with the last Victoria portrait, the Veiled Head in 1895, five years before the outbreak of the better known of the Boer Wars, the Second Boer War. The Britannia is updated remains unchanged until the first year of the reign of George VI in 1937. A new Britannia appears and the lighthouse brought back.
I can said I am very lucky when I bought 25 years ago a box full of Great Britain coins beginning two Farthing from William IV date 1836 and 1837 F condition and several coins from Victoria era started with the biggest penny ever saw copper 1857 F condition and several other 1/2 pennies 1841, 1861, 1863 VF condition those are the rare but the coins continue from several farthing from 1839 to present time plus pennies and silver coins 1/2 crown well I found this box two day ago in my closet so I am going to be enjoying see it what all have.
Just curious as we find coins all the time when out detecting here in the UK, is there an actual market for these in the U.S because here they are pretty much worthless apart from the fun if digging them up. Great video 👍

Im American and I would say yes, I am a big collector of British Pennies, from George III to Victoria, they just have to be in Fine to Xtra Fine to have some good value, I paid $35 dollars for a 1835 George IV Farthing in very fine condition on ebay, and $18 for a 1890 Victorian Penny in Xtra fine condition, its all about the condition, but we American do collect them, but my favorite is the 1/3rd 1868 Victorian Farthing.

Very interesting but you haven't mentioned about the coin content - the newer 1p and 10p decimal coins do not work in fruit machines from the 1990's lots of the older 2 shillings florins and sixpences coins were melted down for their silver content very sad

Queen Victoria was the Empress of India, you missed that on the third coin. It didn't start with Edward VII as mentioned by you.
