    In Canada, the consumer is very resistant to GMO tomatoes. Which is why I only grow heirloom Beefsteak tomatoes. // In addition, I found making the soil a little acidic, adds flavour to the tomatoes.

    One advantage to the arid climate here in NM is the almost non existence of mildews and only slight bouts of blight. But it can get too hot and the pollinators aren't out or the pollen can go sterile. That happened to me last summer 3 heat waves had really low yields compared to other years.

  • @bogipepper
    @bogipepper 3 года назад +3

    Heirloom tomatoes are tricky. I have done the grafting to aggressive root stocks and couldn't believe the yield. More importantly picking early like you said is a must. Higher yield means nothing if the tomatoes are smiling back at you.

    Sounds like Heirlooms would be ideal for growing in a greenhouse. Once you start emptying out your greenhouses from seedlings and get one that is empty do you try and grow any in there . . . .even if they are just for the families use ?

    Here’s a thought. The big supermarkets need a way to buy the producer do they buy by the pound or the individual piece. Well if your older like I am, it’s easy to figure out for me it’s weight. I went to my Stop and Shop the other day and bought half a water melon. Well guess what water melon doesn’t taste like water melon anymore. My city guess is farmers are aware of this and they want a couple of things speed and weight. That’s going too make or break them. At some point we are going to have to get back to taste. That’s what your selling. I don’t know how much you emphasize no gmo’s I would go after the taste market, do you remember what a tomato tasted like 50 years ago you’ll find out here.

    I'll see if I (and mainly my customers) like them once they are marketable, but if you had further thoughts on them, good or bad id like to hear if you can spare a few mins.

    My exact same thoughts about heirlooms, and you are so right about picking at first blush of color. In your germination area, instead of just plastic over the plug trays, what we used to do was bend 1/2" conduit into hoops and put every 4 ft apart along the bench, so it was like a mini greenhouse in the greenhouse. Over that we would roll out row cover fabric and then plastic over that. Then when it was sunny, you could pull the plastic up and leave the fabric so it retained moisture and bottom heat without cooking the seedlings. Then at night or when the weather was cloudy, you pull the plastic down. Worked well for us for years. Love watching you guys.

    1/4 of the total tomatoes I have are heirloom. The number one customer request I get is “big heirloom tomatoes. I want the really big ones”. So I go with brandy wine, black krim, Cherokee purple, Kellogg’s breakfast, pineapple and a few other common ones. They get their own plot so I can spray them with mancozeb and copper until harvest starts. Black plastic mulch and drip tape are key to keeping the blight off as long as possible.

    In a home garden, I can just take the best 1/4 tomato every year and use the seeds for next year. The best 1/4 is the tomato in the 1/2 with the best tomatoes and also in the best 1/2 of disease-free. 1/2 of 1/2 is the best 1/4. I have let some things go like "self-supporting" and "early production". However, too late production gives more time and opportunities to catch more diseases. Just like late corn has more bugs.

    I don’t mind hybrid tomatoes but I grow almost exclusively heirloom as a home gardener. I totally see how they would be much more difficult in a commercial setting. I stake and prune them, great out put and taste. My favorite part is growing a plant I would never find in a store.

    Well you could actually raise your own tomatoes and peppers year round if you converted some of your greenhouses to hydroponics and then you would be able to grow them year round. You’d be amazed at how incredible tomatoes and peppers grow in nutrient rich water. You already have the watering systems set up and heating system and you wouldn’t have to worry about any pest pressures or diseases. All you would have to do is put grow lights in. Anyway May want to be something to consider??? 🙏🏻🥰🇨🇦
