She sells a descent into outright terror & panic so well that it truly makes the sight of Jack anxiety-inducing. That is quite honestly nothing short of brilliant.

Shelley Duvall should have won An Academy award for her performance in the shining it was absolutely spot on and she shared the Terror as if you The audience members were there with her and wanted to protect her and the boys at the same time . there are few times I became so involved in what was going on in the movie even though I had to read the book!
And that's why her and Danny's escape from the hotel was so bland and the scene of a frozen Nicholson in the maze so hilariously cheap. For me, with The Shining, he made his most flawed movie. Despite some extremely effective moments. (Kubrick was of course a cinematic genius) But hey; King's own produced version wasn't much better. 😋

I always concentrated on Jack's role when I watched it as a kid, but once I learned how the movie messed her up and she's pretty much not even acting I appreciated her role a lot more.

She made the movie great. Coming from an abusive household, she truly mesmerized me with how real her character was. The nervousness was raw and palpable of a woman married to a ticking time bomb. My mom, like her character, Wendy, would make excuses and tip toe around trying not to upset the ‘monster’ in our home. She truly is a treasure to watch. Love you, Shelly! ❤❤❤

I watched Popeye the other day on RUclips (free with ads)! I had forgotten about it..but I died at the part near the beginning where the old woman has a large sack and Popeye is trying to help her with it..and she knocks him flat on his ass. It's not the hit so much as the lil mumbled dialogue he has during.. "Oh Mudda, let me help you with your burden..you've got so much to bear...BLOW ME DOWN!" (Paraphrasing)
It's rare to see "ugly fear" emoted in a movie and that's why it works so well. It's off-putting and real and doesn't let audiences off the hook with anything "pretty" or expectedly trope-ish. I know a lot of people hate Wendy as a character but if you understand the movie _she does everything right_ and never hesitates to charge forward to protect her son despite anything that is happening around her. Wendy is emotionally obliterated to the point where you see most movie characters give up, but her courage _never_ breaks. Her emotions are out of control but her resolve never is and it's uncommon to see that sustained in a performance for so long.
Shelley Duvall did so much for that performance and went through so much manipulation only to be nominated for a razzie. Rest in Peace Shelley, you deserved infinitely more than you were given

Kubrick was a perfectionist. You can see that he, too, suffered physically from the amount of work he put himself through. He would rearley sleep. He would live and breathe the film until it was done. Those dark eyes speak to just how exhausted he was by the end of each picture. He put in the work and expected you to do the same if you were to work with him. He didn't care about the implications or the consequences because it was in service to the film. Call him curel, call him crazy, he was dedicated to his craft, and he was undeniably a master.
