- I purchased a SunJoe 20 inch manual reel mower for my front yard. In this video I unbox the mower and use it for the very first time. I'm hoping this will help me take my height of cut lower.

I never thought I'd reach a point in life where I'd spend a ridiculous amount of time watching lawn related you tube videos but here I am. It feels wonderful.
Bro, for real. I remember being a 25 year old single guy like it was yesterday. I stand before you now a 42 year old married man with two kids who watches lawn videos in his downtime by choice lol !
Im a first time home owner and I must admit I get a bit excited watching lawncare videos as well.
It’s nice to get the female’s impression of it. I only weigh 105lbs and pushing a lawn mower isn’t easy for me. I’ll give this a try, hopefully it won’t be too difficult.
I just bought the exact same mower...I love it. I cant wait to level out my lawn to better experiment..

I have the lawn mower he's using not the reel one but the one in the beginning man it's a beast lasted me 30 years lmfao mover changed oil never drained gas for winter always 1 pull started right up go figure the self propel broke and it was impossible to push and my mom threw it away hahaha I have to say we got it use as well. I beat the crap out of it too I cut 8 to 12 days with it sometimes long wet grass just because I needed money this was a great mower that little toro was
I may mow low next season. I just didn't have the nerve to try it this year. Kudos to you buddy for having the guts to go for it.
There is something about the reel mowing cut quality that is nothing like a rotary cut. Looking forward to the future of your front lawn, Jimbo!

Jimmy just got "REEL" lol... Nice pick up. Only thing about the push reels are that the blades will leave marks in the lawn cause they spin so slow. I see a Swordman reel mower in your future if your going to get to 1 inch or lower. Great video...I'm also pushing my lawn low now in the fall. Was cutting at 3.5 inches now down to 2 inches. I will be looking for a used powered reel mower in the spring to get H.O.C. to 1 inch or lower. I will definitely need to level out my lawn as i have high and low spots in my yard also.

Awesome! I'm trying to do the same thing, Timemaster, bringing it down lower, detaching, and reel mowing with a Fiskars reel, but it's a challenge for sure. Interested to see your results, as I too am seeing similar results, probably because we are treating the lawn with similar apps, meaning good fert, granular and spray. Thanks so much for your vids.

Interested, looking forward to a review since I’m in the market. Also as a lawn geek out moment I wish more lawn tubers would do a garage/shed walkthrough like Ryan Knorr did of his mowers, seed, bench, trimmers, tools, etc and how he organizes his stuff but more specifically I wish that they’d cover their liquids they keep on hand ranging from herbicides, fertilizers, soil supplements, fungicides, insecticides, etc. if you’re looking for a good dormancy video keep this in mind and push some of the lawn tuber guys out that way to do the same. I kept seeing the liquids shelf (us lawn enthusiasts all have one) and I so wanted to know what you keep on hand. Btw the Simple Solutions products will be going down on the newly renovated TTTF lawn at my brother in-law’s house. It’s already looking lush for being so young but I need a quick foliar hit of some N and K since some long range forecasts are predicting a possible early freeze here way sooner than expected. Keep up the content!

The thing about a manual reel mower is that they work best for “maintaining” a lawn. They’re really effortless if you mow often (2-3x a week) and they really aren’t great for mowing a lawn that is tall or overgrown.
Agreed. Switching to reel mowing increases your commitment to maintain the lawns height of cut for sure. I mow at least twice a week in my front yard.
Jimmy Lewis, Yes. Most homeowners will get a manual reel mower thinking it will be great and easy and quickly get discouraged. I know that you already know this, my comment was more for those who are watching this video and thinking of getting one. Keep up the great work.👍

Just bought this, because I cant seem to turn on my other mower without a males help, idk why pulling the string to crank is so FREAKIN difficult. I just opened up the box to my reel mower and now I'm ready to put it together

Grrr! I just my Sun Joe lawn mower but I cannot get the adjustment for the blade right. Then the grass clogged on the blade.
Take the reel all the way off the bed knife then slowly work it back down until it cuts paper.
I may see if I can convince my father in law to reel mow his yard. Much flatter than mine, so he could get away with it. Really fun video! I’m glad your wife remained upright, though her foot ware probably not best for the job.

I finally got a 20” Scott’s classic manual reel mower to bring my lawn height down. I have been using the 1/3 rule to get it down but I still have some super low / scalped brown areas. I live in Scottsdale AZ and have Bermuda grass. (I would love to level it but not going to happen this season) I used some 21-7-14 about 3 weeks ago and added a few more waterings per week and still can’t get some of the stubborn spots to snap out of it. Can you please recommend some tips or products to try to help the scalped areas recover and improve the green and health of the overall lawn? In general I love the results switching from my crappy rotary mower to the reel mower but really want to get that golf course green. Thanks in advance and keep up the great videos and content.

What is the humas product you put down??
That is granular humate, or humic acid. It's a soil conditioner that I apply twice a year in the spring and the fall. Helps to improve the clay soil conditions. It's available from Amazon - amzn.to/3pqDG4G
Very nice reel mower. Going forward now what did you decide as far as using it on your front yard? I was thinking about a reel mower for my front lawn and thought this might be a good starting point?
It’s definitely a good starting point if you want to try reel mowing. I’ve since upgraded to a toro greensmaster. You can see that in some more recent videos. I love it.

Just got my first house and now I need a mower.. I'm not afraid of some physical labor, but I want my yard to be the envy of the neighborhood. What are some advantages to having a reel mower vs having a normal push mower?

Congrats on the house! Reel mowers definitely require more tile and effort, and it’s a rabbit hole, but it’s fun. Cleaner cut than a rotary mower and I personally like the feel of the short cut lawn.

Yeah it's effort. There's no motor, so no torque or anything to help propel it forward. It's all manual power. But it does the job.
Boy I bought one and honestly boy it wasn’t worth it hell I try to mow the lawn and relax it was like trying to pull horse teeth

Striperman, it seems to be popular to go low, look at the Rebel going down to .30 , he was pumped about it, I don’t know if his lawn could survive that over a long period of time though. 😎

It's really mainly preference. I want to try something new and different.
Not fair pushing a manual reel mower is not the same as cutting with a self propelled mower. Its harder to manual push 👵
