  • An improvisation by James Orford at St Paul's Cathedral, London. With apologies for the background noise coming from outside the cathedral!

such beautiful cords. He crawls around the cipher with many different chords and plays with your heart strings very easily! I love it!

What a magnificent organ, just wonderful to hear how it can go from soft to loud.

By far one of the most beautiful organs in the world..... And so wonderfully played. What a fun and creative idea for an improvisation. It's currently a Bb in the Swell for me - no pencil needed... 🙄

I could feel the organ was breathing between the phrases. Wonderful!

When I hear the organ making such beautiful statements, I ask the question: why do not more people love the instrument?

I think many people do enjoy the organ when they are exposed to it. It's the association with Church that makes them break out in hives. People are allergic to Truth and Holiness, and by default, they miss a great deal of the beauty that is found only in the sanctified respites of life. And that's not solely inclusive of or limited to the organ...

It's because so much organ music is tedious crap, and even that which is good, players like Mr Orford here tend to strangle all the life out of with unimaginative registration and strict tied-to-the-barline tempi which make the performance feel soulless. Then you meet the organist - and I have met hundreds of them - and they are without exception the dullest, blandest, most uninteresting people I have ever met. They can't communicate, they can't socialise outside of their insular clique, they are hopeless at outreach...

@@richardharrold9736 I really must come for a lesson with you some time. I have so much to learn from you, not just about my organ playing but also my communication skills.

So nice. I am so happy being able to play the organ myself and hearing such great players like Mister Orford!

Beautiful!! My dad was a pipe organ repairman / builder. He could have offered this as inspiration to people who had to wait for him to come fix the ciphers! LOL.

Absolutely beautiful, haunting, powerful, emotional and like being taken on a musical journey that you don't want to end. Thank you so much.

SO lovely. What a simple but very moving improvisation. I'm a singer at a liturgical church with a big choral program, and though only just getting started with a busy run of Holy Week, I'm already tired, haha. But this filled me up this morning. Thank you.

I thought the organ at St Paul's Cathedral had 5 manuals? Or is one hidden beneath the music desk.
