    My Moskvitch 2140 exhaust disintegrated when I was working in the Middle East in 1981. I wasn't able to source another as the whole dealership had ended trading. A neighbour had brought an exhaust section for his Moskvitch from the UK but said British Airways made a fuss when he tried to put it in the cabin luggage. Eventually I found old iron drainpipe by the roadside, stuck it in the rusted end of manifold pipe and kept it in place with wire, and that worked after a fashion. No silencer, but as long as I kept my foot off the throttle, no-one noticed.

Top tip getting the swan neck to sit at the right angle in the outlet of the cross box when the new bits arrive - I made up a sleeve the same size as the inside of the front end of the swan neck that stuck out a couple of inches - it then pushes into the outlet of the cross box and holds the swan neck at the right position as you do the clamp up.

    Had a 4 speed in a 70 fastback run out of lube, where the fastest free spinning gear (1st) instantly welded itself to the shaft at 70mph. Ford 302W handled the RPMs no problem. The car rapidly decelerated to around 40, when the front u-joint broke. Fortunately I didn't pole vault, but it wrapped up the exhaust and pulled the tailpipe clean over the diff, changing it's profile just a bit to say the least. After clearing all that mess off of the driveshaft, I changed the u-joint on the side of the road (had a spare) while fortunately traffic built up along the old J&L mills in Pittsburgh PA, on the parkway. Drove a mile off the parkway in walking speed rush hour traffic with no exhaust and stuck in first, with about another 3/4 mile to get home.

    How cars like this keep passing UK MOT’s when the exhaust is clearly defective is really beyond me. Other countries this would just be completely unacceptable. Elly really seems like a car that’s hanging in there by a thread tbh.

    • @keithmatthews1673
      @keithmatthews1673 2 года назад

      The exhaust is not a structural component of the car so it will only be checked for leaks, emissions and type compliance (eg Cat, DPF AdBlu where applicable) if it wasnt leaking when MOT tested then Bobs yer uncle - or in Wales Dai's yer daddy 😃

    Perhaps she could bring Miss Daisy to the NEC instead on this occasion as it seems Elly is having issues & time is not on your side !! Best of luck regardless 👍👍👍

    Classic old school HubNut light tinkering vid, thanks very much! Is the old conversion that you put on the dud Croatia engine something that could be transferred across to another block? It hasn't done many miles and isn't part of the failure. Or was it?!

    • @HubNut

      We will investigate that engine to see what failed, and whether the barrels and pistons were damaged...

    It's definitely not your fault that the structurally unsound exhaust broke when you investigated the mounts. Motors are always a voyage of discovery. It's a peculiar thing just how we often blame ourselves for things out of our control. I've spent most of my life attempting to train myself not to!

    At times you must be exhausted..... after what these cars put you through 👀🚗🇬🇧. Over here in Arizona it'll take 30/40 years for your exhaust system to get a couple of pinholes in it 😀........ that's IF you don't go modifying it in the first place 🚗.....
