@@rhoninwindrunner7575 I don't think that's entirely true, his experience fighting with the Spanish socialists where probably the biggest influence for his book, in my opinion

WhatThyHex how shitty hair genes do your relatives have if you think it's uncommon for a man in his late 30s to have a normal amount of hair/no bald patch?
ehm, no? "The dissolution of the Soviet Union[a] occurred on December 26, 1991, officially granting self-governing independence to the Republics of the Soviet Union."
The society portrayed in _1984_ was *not* based on the USSR; in fact it was based on the British Empire in India and extrapolation of how Orwell saw the future of all of humanity. It's amazing how many people read the book and still completely miss its central point about the dangers of the military-industrial complex.
It was based on totalitarian leaders, like Stalin, and set in Britain. The reason for this was to show how any country could devolve into a totalitarian society
The past few days I've been wondering: How the hell have I gone 10 years on RUclips without knowing about CaptainDisillusion's channel up until he was featured on this podcast? And I think I found the answer: Quality-wise, CD's content has been on par with TV shows from the beginning, and in '08 his type of content wasn't really sought after on RUclips, because people on the internet back then were after those types of amateurish videos that were part of the whole charm of the then new platform. But now that we're in 2018 and the divergence between TV content and internet content is slowly but surely thinning away, CD's channel is starting to gain the relevance it deserves. I'm not sure, but I think I even remember seeing the thumbnail to the first video he uploaded around back in the day but never clicking on it. Or maybe I did but clicked away almost immediatly? If only I knew what I was missing on... I didn't really know English that well back then, so I guess that's why...
My mother grew up in the Soviet Union, and she still supports it. She is always telling ms that life was so much better then, and she always denies that there was anything wrong with it. She was very patriotic and did not think anybody living outside of the Soviet Union was having a better life.
I always thought his way of speaking was for the show but now I see it is a carefully cultivated American accent. That's pretty great, you can barely tell.
It's super fitting that "Captain Disillusion", who dedicates his time solely to debunking fake videos/seeking truth, was raised in the Soviet Union lol
What a backstory! I love lifting the veil and hearing about the "person behind the peformer". And H3, just to clarify: 1984 is a book inspired by the oppressiveness of totalitarian regimes, and about the fear of letting those forms of government assume total and direct control in the advent of rapidly increasing technology. It's a warning to all people of the world back then, and forwards unto the end of time: to keep your head on and be vigilant about pushes from any form of government into a state of superpower. With that much power, all that matters is to remain in power, whatever the price. In a cascading chain event of one grim development after another, the world of 1984 as described in the book is born. And through its story, such a world is critiqued, and its dangers explored.
I knew it was something like that! The way he pronounced russian names, without generic american or british accent, and without horrible pseudo-russian accent all "russian" characters talk with in hollywood movies, was very suspicious for non russian speaking person
What?!?!?! Here I am admiring Cap for being such a great artist, and now I randomly find out that he's originally from Latvia??? :O welp, the world sure tends to be small.
Great stuff. Not sure 1984 is based solely on Stalinist Russia though. Quite a lot is based on post-war Britain. Not a massive fan of CD's videos, but he's a really interesting and intelligent guy to listen to!
Ashboy I think I remember the setting being post war Britain, that's basically become an airstrip for a huge oceanic superpower centered in America. But there were two other totalitarian superpowers that constantly warred to keep each other in check, I think they were basically the USSR as a vast Eurasian state, and tbe another one being basically communist China and East Asia. I think he saw that the world was becoming polarized into world dominating superpowers again just like WW1 as old European empires were collapsing.
I think, with the all-encompassing secret police, militarism, and destruction of non-conforming literature, parallels can also be drawn to fascist nations as well. I think the fact you can compare it to both the USSR and Nazi Germany was on purpose, as Orwell saw the 'Communist' party of the Soviet Union as no better than the fascists he also despised.
Alexandre Kaiser I believe he also draws on his observations of people's behaviors, namely mob mentality, when he was a policeman in India. Very interesting guy.

The average Westerner doesn't have a grasp on Eastern European cultures. Latvia and Russia speak different languages, they are different ethnic groups, and are very different politically today. If someone went up to a Latvian and called them Russian, the Latvian would laugh in that person's face and call them very ill-informed.
>1984 was based on the USSR It was published way before the USSR's peak and way before the cold war. It was published a few years after WW2 and could've been based on Orwell's experiences as a soldier and disdain for government as he was an anarchist
the beginning of the cold war was basically right after Yalta and Potsdam, where the spheres were created. operation paperclip and the division of Berlin basically sealed the deal. These conferences were in 1944/45, Blair fought in the Spanish civil war in 1933 ON THE SIDE OF THE SOVIETS. 1984 and Animal farm were critiques of Stalinism inspired by his experiences in the war.
Nick Dziura the soviets did not exist is spain at the time of the spanish civil war. He fought with the CNT who were anarcho communists and Orwell himself was an anarchist. 1984 is more based on if the modern western intelligencia and facism that he would fight against in spain would go to an extreme
That is 100% incorrect. Orwell's 1984 book was based from his personal experiences of witnessing how the British military/government treated Indians. Orwell lived in India for some time and saw extensive oppression by the hands of Britain's forces.
Dude, i ran into his channel years ago and just discounted it. The Face paint was a little weird and it seemed like he was trying too hard. But years later, having had time to age in the barrels of RUclips, I have really come to appreciate his channel and personality. He is a very cool person. He is certainly one of my favorites.
Literature geek here! 1984 was actually NOT based on communist Russia. Orwell (and Huxley, by the way) stole the plot idea from a Russian novel named "We", which was written by Zamyatin in 1920, before the USSR was even created. The plot describes the author's hyperbolic, almost satirical dystopian vision of the country's future, before it even existed. Sincerely, a Russian Russian literature enthusiast

It was published way before the USSR's peak and way before the cold war.
1984 was based on the British government
1984 was based on orwell's experience with stalinists during the spanish civil war.
I feel like Ethan kind of put words into his mouth, especially with the 1984 stuff.
He used the magic of video editing to escape unseen

Jep
Literature geek here! 1984 was actually NOT based on communist Russia. Orwell (and Huxley, by the way) stole the plot idea from a Russian novel named "We", which was written by Zamyatin in 1920, before the USSR was even created. The plot describes the author's hyperbolic, almost satirical dystopian vision of the country's future, before it even existed.
Sincerely, a Russian Russian literature enthusiast
I just found out he is from Latvia and i am frome there too
