Pure audio mode, disables tone controls, shuts off display output through the HDMI. The idea is to turn the unit into as close to a "straight wire with gain" as possible, not increase power output. Hence the name Pure Audio. Denon has a similar mode with theirs. It's called Pure Direct.
i wonder if thd actually goes down in pure direct, straight, pure w/e mode, or otherwise does the display and other hardware add distortion. or is it all a gimmick.
I would venture a guess and say that it does make measurable differences in the signal path. What that translates to in regards to the final output audibly to the human ear is questionable. If adding such a feature makes consumers pick one device over another. Then why not, I guess? So gimmick, most likely. I have a pre amp from Yamaha, the c-70 circa 1982. It has an option called direct disc. When pushed in it bypasses the parametric eq and a couple of other stops along the signal path for the phono input. If the parametric eq is set flat I can't tell the difference. It does add an additional button and light, so there's that.
I have the rz710 and it pounds the crap out of my living room. Very impressed by Onkyo. My old receiver was a Denon and would overheat all the time and shutdown.
This is the series that I got when I upgraded my Onkyo . The nice thing is they are staying on top of firmware bugs and seem to fix them in a timely manner also some times those firmware release are updated features.
I bought the TX-RZ820 from Crutchfield based on this video. I have Magnepan's entry level speakers with the quasi-ribbon tweeters and a rated 4 ohm impedance. Blew up the receiver, then another. Crutchfield replaced both under warranty. I opted for a dedicated 300 wpc amplifier from Emotiva and I'm glad I did. The receiver is great for signal processing and ergonomics, but it's still a fairly weak chip amp in the power section. Does ok with dummy loads and constant impedance but not great with difficult to drive speakers.
I've got the 810 in my living room and an 820 in the theater room. The 3rd zone of both feed to each other. Zone 2 of the living room 810 goes to the kitchen and dining room and Zone 2 of the theater room goes to some outdoor speakers. It's great...I can have music playing throughout the entire house and outside with a few quick clicks on the Onkyo app. Excellent receivers for the price except I had some issues with the 820 and 4k60 video. I'm not sure what the difference is between the 810 and 820 but yeah, the 810 is much happier with 60fps 4k.
Dude that thing exceeded my expectations.I really love home theater receivers. For its weight she sure puts out. One thing Ive wondered. If you use the 7.1 multi channel input, will the results be the same? just measuring the front 2 channels but you lose the stereo\pure direct mode which i believe dedicates power for best stereo.
I have the TX-RZ820. I find it interesting that they always rate amplifiers with 2 channels driven, but when using this as a home theater receiver, folks are driving 5 or 7 channels. Thank you for testing the mains. Would love to see how it does with more channels driven.
@@lavantz345 I have been very happy with my Onkyo TX-RZ820. It has been plenty loud for both home theater and with two channel stereo, and it is packed with features.
It would be cool to see a power test for the Onkyo TX-NR3008, there are no lab test for that monster so it would be great to see how much power it can deliver in 6ohm mode of course. Great videos btw!
Hell yeah, I just recently bought an ONKYO TX-SR608 and after setting it up with the Auddesy mic this thing is crazy! Granted it may not be the newest and greatest but she's a powerful ol gurl! Not to mention I only paid $80 shipped for it lol-ol-ol had to pay $12 for a remote and another $24 for the setup-mic but this thing blows my mind hooked up to my Sony Bravia 70in flat screen and the Klipsch speaker system.... I'm still learning the settings myself but man the transformer inside is the size of a microwave lmao 🤣
I have dad's tx-2500 mk II.....silverface 70s...cabinets were ge sound source....Lotta pure pirarie league, rare earth, clapton, rod stewart, and more than I have room to count were played wide open Saturday mornings 8n the 80s when I was hopin to sleep in....still have his pioneer pl-400 record player that all these albums were played on...we lost mom in December and been takin care of him myself since...love the old school...I'm still stuck there...lol
One thing I noticed about the Onkyo receivers is they are some power houses with just the built in amp that comes inside. I have the Onkyo TXR 747 series and love it. I don't need an outboard amp.
The next time you dyno an av receiver, please dyno it with all channels. It would be interesting to see what happens when all channels are going at once. I and many others have wondered about that during lab tests elsewhere.
Keep doing this home theater test, I have a Yamaha RX-v1400 and I love it . Although mine says it pushes 110 Watts rms per channel ( 7 channel amp) and it's heavier than this one.
Great video once again BigD! You made a good decision with that receiver IMO. It's all about the power supply in audio. You can always modify gear to make it better if you want. But there's no point, if the original foundation is shite in the first place. And that foundation is mainly the power supply. Which is mainly the transformer. And that one looks beefy! If you're running it in direct mode, or just using it as a 2 channel amp. The 1 power supply is fine. I would rather have 1 nice high current PS, then 5 little crappy ones anyway. Less chance of issues, and cheaper in the long run I would think. That's a very flexible piece of gear man. Especially with the Pre out. Nice stuff.
"Seperate" home theater amps move to individual and isolated amp circuits, then the high end stuff has a transformer per channel. They do this for channel separation (aka avoiding one channel bleeding into the other) but transformer based power supplies don't really fail unless you cook them so it's not really adding points of failure, if anything it creates redundancy in that you can only burn one channel at a time. Some go so far as to be modular and swapping entire channels can be accomplished by the user from the back of the amp. Truly home audio is another world.
Love to see some more receiver vids, hope you can get your hands on a Denon AVR 3803. Back in the day I hooked up a blaupunkt tri channel amp output to the Denon's input (Ghetto pre-amp/crossover lol) Hooked it up to a old school Power Acoustik MOFO @ 2ohms per channel. It was pretty legit to say the least!
I have an Old School Kenwood stereo receiver that my father in law gave me (krv126r ~circ 1987) rated at 130 x 2 @ 8 ohms 0.008 thd! Thing’s a beast, they don’t make them like that anymore
nice to see Onkyo is giving you more than what is advertised, I've been thinking about Onkyo for my next receiver last several ones have been Denon and just wonder how this latest one I have would stack up it's a AVR-4311CI? it's a monster to say the least, I also have 2 Crown K2 amps for the subs 😁 killer my friend
Randy Pullman i used to have an Onkyo Integra M-504 back when i was in college. It was modestly rated at 165 watts per channel. That amp took everything we could throw at it, we ran multiple speakers on both channels for hours during partys and we did bridge it once to drive a single performance PA monitor the amp never even got warm! It was an incredible amp i wish i still had it.
tennu Bullshit, I own several 2 channel home stereo power amps that are bridgeable!! You must not be much of an audiophile. We arent talking Frys and Best Buy equipment here buddy. I own an Adcom 555se that is bridgeable And YES we bridged that Onkyo that had binding post and ran it on one channel for hours and it ran fine. Know what youre talking about before you comment!!!!
Derek, love your channel and your objective tests. Is there any chance you could test any mid range Yamaha AVR? They are notorious for limiting current. Thank you for the amazing content!
Would love to see you test some of the stereo onkyo models. I have the TX 8511 8522 and 8211 they are all great recievers and used they can be had for a steal. Thanks for the vid and glad to see you doing more non car audio gear (still love those tests though)
Enjoyed this Test as I own a couple of Onkyo receivers as well. You should consider testing some old school home audio amplifiers as well. Carver, Soundcraftsmen, Adcom.....
Nice stuff man now all you need is klipsch reference series 7.1 system and you'll be rocking the neighborhood 🤘 btw would love to see more home audio stuff on here
I've got an old Kenwood stereo receiver from the 70s, I think it's rated at around 20 watts per channel, many people say the old school Hi-Fi stuff was very underrated, I'd be curious to see a vintage amp run on the dyno. I'd be willing to send in mine if you'd like! I'd had the thought about if you could run home audio stuff on the dyno, then came across this video, cool stuff.
You can tell when Onkyo really cut costs on their receivers with the mid range products. 30lbs is light for a 7 channel receiver. The old SR805 (2007-ish) did 200+ at 8 ohms and and 370 watts at 4 ohms, all channels driven. This receiver is still really good, it just isn't the steal of a deal the older series receivers were for their time. I'd still pick it over pretty much anything else in it's price range.
OxBlitzkriegxO you're not wrong. Never before or since have you been able to buy a brand new thx ultra 2 certified amp for the rrp of the 805. It was so ahead of everything else that onkyo cannibalized the 806 by using their mid range chassis which was shared by the 706. This is in contrast with the 805 that shared the shame chassis as the 875 and 905. They also weigh closer to 51lbs!
It's mostly the chassis and heatsink that they cheap out on. The transformers are still pretty hefty, especially when they use the torroidal power supplies.
You should also look for Pre-ins, so you can use an old receiver to add channels or add power handling if you need to get up to the 2ch power levels. I have an old Denon for this anything without a HDMI port is dirt cheap and usually plenty powerful!
Another Onkyo user here running a TX-NR717. If the fan is anything like mine, Onkyo 3 different speeds on it, and turns it off completely if the amp section isn't threatening to melt down. I run a laptop chill pad on mine at all times, pulling air out the top that keeps it pretty happy. Already sent it in once for network chip issues, and it's not perfect in the hdmi department eithet. Movies are amazing though!
rjolly87 I've been reading that many onkyo owners encounter hdmi issues. What sort of issues do you have regarding the hdmi ports? And would you say the issues are deal breakers when looking to buy an onkyo or something that might be annoying more than anything yet manageable?
solace angler It's hard to say. My unit worked great until it bricked on a software update. Repeated attempts to get the unit up and running finally came through, but no matter what I tried, the primary hdmi output never worked again. The unit went in on a special service program for network chip issues (requiring HDMI board replacement ironically enough) and came back with a working primary output, except that it kept dropping out repeatedly forcing it to reconnect every time, dropping video in the process, with some times not even coming back on its own. Switched back to the secondary hdmi output, relatively no problems at all. Do your research before buying. Keep the receiver cool. I picked mine up second hand, and given that I essentially paid $120-$140 for what was a $1k only a few years prior, I have very few complaints.
Very nice. I'm wondering what an m5000r amp would put out at the same specs. Its power is rated rather low but that's measured at only 0.05%thd.. wondering if it actually would be beneficial to add a m5000r to a avr that outputs this amount of watts to power the fronts.
Rotel RA 1592 integrated measured at 2x200w with 0.03%thd measure it.. some other hfi site measured it higher than the rb1582 2 channel block, and they custom made each torriodal transformer themselves in-house.
It's a lie. Unless you listen to test tones instead of music. Also, why buy a 9 or 7 channel reciever for stereo 2ch listening? In a home theater setup with 5.1 chs up to max channels, this AVR would run at 80W or less if used as intended.
I love onkyo. I have 2 onkyo WRAT M-282 amps. Says it’ll put out 100 Watts per channel, when I tested it, it was able to do 400 Watts per channel at 2 ohms 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻 Also, they’re powering 8 Skar Audio 12” subs. slightly underpowered but they still push hard.
Thanks for the review! I am considering buying this Rz 810 To be used as a preamp for my B&K AVR 307 monster. Have you ever done this test with any B&K receivers? Thanks!
Id like to see the same test with all channels active. Speakers don’t need to be connected to all channels just switched on in the surround setup. These receivers switch either voltage or current(i forget which) and if all channels are active it drops the rated voltage. Im really curious what the actual output is.
I have a 2002? TX-DS676 I think is rated at 80/ch driving Klipsch R-620F fronts in a 5.1 setup without the sub. ( complete klipsch speakers ) and it rocks. I went to Onkyo back in the early 90's after having a 120w/ch Sony receiver that was blown away by the Onkyo 70 or 75w/ch surround receiver I got to replace my bedroom setup after a 2 ch Harman Kardon amp got killed by lightning. I also got a pair of JB tower speakers that were all display models heavily discounted at Circuit City. The Onkyo just blew away my beloved Sony with 1/2 the rated power. I have been a Onkyo fan ever since. I got this receiver used several years ago for around $75 after my DS575 ? unit died. They are both from around 2002 and were around $1000 retail I think. Neither have HDMI but both had 4 optical inputs so who cares. I think mine weights close to 30 lbs as well and it is only 5.1 channels. Another great video. Love your stuff.
Looks like 32.4 lbs per cnet and 85/ch @ 8ohms. I love the Phono stage on these older amps better than the newer ones. I have an old Onkyo belt table with Ortofon Red stylus. It isn't high end by any means but it sounds sweet. Love all my old Chicago and Monkees albums. Even got an old Flip Wilson record. Cd's are great and everything but the sound is a little different coming from vinyl. Even got an old Rush album. I want a time machine. Go back to the 80's.
Your internals are different than my RZ800. The RZ800 has two fans, huge heatsink, and a huge power transformer smack dab center. It is a fricking beastly receiver and I love it. Not surprised its a tad underrated as mine is THX certified, so it needs to provide some headroom. I'm not sure the fans ever even kick on. Runs a little hot. I'm sure it would burst about 100 watts per channel into 7 channels. Wouldn't be surprised if it did 150-200 watts per channel into 8 ohms. The Auto-EQ is simple, but works like a charm - best "Movie Bass" I've ever had so far. Great sound quality, period, AND you can do a little EQing yourself on each channel if you want or really need to. Now if only HDMI standards and surround standards wouldn't change so dang fast. Oh ya, when these Onkyos go on sale they are a total steal. Mine was basically half price when I snatched it up.
I rewired the internal fans to turn on when the amp does. I also added a fan to suck out the heat and added a large heat sink to the power transformer and a little fan with a heat sink to the HDMI chip.
They don’t make them like they used to. I have a Yamaha z9 that weighs 70 pounds (7.1), and Yamaha z11 that weighs 88 pounds. Both can believe rated power at all channels driven.
ADR yes those amps are class A/B. I know that the Z9 runs class A for first 10 Watts. The new amps just keep getting smaller and smaller because the power supplies keep shrinking.
I still rock a yamaha rx-v2092 from 1997. It does its 125 watts a channel but I only use the center channel to power speakers. I use a mx-2 and m-70 for front and rear surround. The 2092 was their flagship other than the v1 and weighed in at 44 lbs. I had heard that the Z9 and Z11 had issues and I see a lot of them for parts not working on ebay. I always wanted one but decided to add amps instead. I love the old yamaha gear and the Z11 to me was the high water mark. I might take a chance on one someday. Plus even though I absolutely love the 2092 the Z receivers are on a whole different level with features.
I had an Onkyo die on me. I have Pioneer Elite VSX-LX301 now. It's much better IMO. I also have a Pioneer that's hanging on by dear life. It's in my shed popping and cracking if it's over 85 degrees outside.
Onkyo had a issue with their receivers a few years ago where the dts chips would overheat. They've fixed it now. Onkyo owns Pioneer now and I think they took some of their design.
Hey Big D, I would love to see a dyno test of a Denon AVR 1911 home theater receiver. That's what I am running and have been running since 2011. Thanks. Keep up the great videos.

Chip amp???
the amp is good and your speakers are screwed up
Buy Emotiva 450wpc
Onkyo only uses class A/B amps which obviously use discreet components.
Sheesh that's some decent power! That thing is going to be LOUD with some decent speakers. Very nice.
Plenty loud for my HT
with all those outputs the amp gives more then even needed super impressed
I'm amazed that you found one of these that work
I really enjoy when you do home audio products Big D!! So many do car audio only
I try to mix it up some. Car is still my favorite, although potentially a MUCH larger audience in the home stuff
I love the receiver dyno. Please keep them coming.
👌😬👍
I have the TX-RZ820. I find it interesting that they always rate amplifiers with 2 channels driven, but when using this as a home theater receiver, folks are driving 5 or 7 channels. Thank you for testing the mains. Would love to see how it does with more channels driven.
ThriftyAV is it good
@@lavantz345 I have been very happy with my Onkyo TX-RZ820. It has been plenty loud for both home theater and with two channel stereo, and it is packed with features.
ThriftyAV Cool, I currently have a Yamaha RX-V471. I find it lacks power, so I was considering getting the RZ820 since it's cheaper now
It would be cool to see a power test for the Onkyo TX-NR3008, there are no lab test for that monster so it would be great to see how much power it can deliver in 6ohm mode of course. Great videos btw!
Nice to see you test home wattage. Would love to see you test more.
I will test more as I have time
@@wal Awesome thank you, love all your vids, much appreciated.
Sweet vid! Love to see home theartre stuff getting tested
Thanks for watching and commenting!
Awesome!! 😎👍
Nice test Big D. I Was always told Onkyo was a decent brand. Looks like this one is a winner
Has been my brand of choice for many years. Yamaha is good too
Mine does well and you can run it pretty hard without clipping.
I really appreciate you teaching us whatvv BC to buy what to buy and what the right Setup
One thing I noticed about the Onkyo receivers is they are some power houses with just the built in amp that comes inside. I have the Onkyo TXR 747 series and love it. I don't need an outboard amp.
So true
Love the home audio tests
Cool to see you doing HT receivers.
Hey BigD, can you show what the power draw was from the wall?? Super curious as to see what that wattage is going to cost you. Thanks for the vids!
Nice stuff.
Good points brother 👌
"Seperate" home theater amps move to individual and isolated amp circuits, then the high end stuff has a transformer per channel. They do this for channel separation (aka avoiding one channel bleeding into the other) but transformer based power supplies don't really fail unless you cook them so it's not really adding points of failure, if anything it creates redundancy in that you can only burn one channel at a time. Some go so far as to be modular and swapping entire channels can be accomplished by the user from the back of the amp.
Truly home audio is another world.
Ya man, I'd say the transformer first, then those huge capacitors and the amps themselves.
I'd love for you to test the Onkyo TX-SR 805. 51lbs! Old but it's supposed to have a killer amp section.
I have an Old School Kenwood stereo receiver that my father in law gave me (krv126r ~circ 1987) rated at 130 x 2 @ 8 ohms 0.008 thd! Thing’s a beast, they don’t make them like that anymore
Kenwood were amazing back in the day. Now they're really bad.
Great video you should do more like this ijs most guys who love car audio love Home audio as well keep up the great work D-WIZ
Hello Big D, we got the tease, never the follow up. I saw this when you published it and then 1 year later got a TX-RZ820 which basically the same.
nice to see Onkyo is giving you more than what is advertised, I've been thinking about Onkyo for my next receiver last several ones have been Denon and just wonder how this latest one I have would stack up it's a AVR-4311CI? it's a monster to say the least, I also have 2 Crown K2 amps for the subs 😁 killer my friend
Love this home theater amp!!! What man (in their right mind) could fill 8 HDMI ports? Holy overkill!
Roku, PS4, HD Blu-ray, theater PC, Xbox, Wii, Firestick, etc. Doesn’t take long to fill them up
I got the same receiver and its a beast!
Nice test. Personally I've always wondered if Onkyo home block amps could be bridged for big gains. Old school is the best school
The amp is a malevolent beast!!!!!!!!!
Derek, love your channel and your objective tests. Is there any chance you could test any mid range Yamaha AVR? They are notorious for limiting current. Thank you for the amazing content!
It looks similar on the inside to my Denon and Yamaha receivers. Makes since.
Love my Integra DTR 50.3
👍🍺👍
Would love to see you test some of the stereo onkyo models. I have the TX 8511 8522 and 8211 they are all great recievers and used they can be had for a steal. Thanks for the vid and glad to see you doing more non car audio gear (still love those tests though)
Cool man! If I had more time to test, I’d test more non-car audio. I try to throw in some occasionally
Enjoyed this Test as I own a couple of Onkyo receivers as well. You should consider testing some old school home audio amplifiers as well. Carver, Soundcraftsmen, Adcom.....
Yes, that would be fun. I’ve tested Proton and NAD already
I had the 620 when they first came out with the RZ series.. A great Amp, but I upgraded to the Yamaha 3070, a 9.2 receiver
Nice stuff man now all you need is klipsch reference series 7.1 system and you'll be rocking the neighborhood 🤘 btw would love to see more home audio stuff on here
Oh yeah!
like the old school stuff! not this new stuff lol
I would be very interested in seeing how my garage unit pans out.
Older unit,
Onkyo TX-NR1000
I know this is an old video but Dang didn't know you did A/V receiver dyno also good stuff would love to see more
The bigger the better Big D.
👈😬👍
BigDWiz haha it is a nice amp and some big power.
My old Kenwood sovereign weights around the same. Always enjoyed home receivers
Nice video like always big d wiz
Thanks for watching and commenting 🤙
I'd love to see you try one of those cheapo Technical pro hifi receivers that claim super high watts lol!
Big D, thanks for the awesome videos. Please test a Harmon Kardon HK 3490
Thanks brutha 👌
I have a 1991 Yamaha 7.1 receiver that was about 1300 bucks back in the day..weighing in at about 75 pounds. Dual heat sink.
I'd also like to see more home theater amps tested
I’ve been happy with the ones I’ve bought over the years too 👌
rjolly87 I've been reading that many onkyo owners encounter hdmi issues.
Awesome. Have you done more of these home gear tests? I have been out of the loop for the last month or so.
Not in the past month
Very impressed. I have a 7 ch pioneer elite 54tx that I would love to know how much it pushes all channels driven.
Rotel RA 1592 integrated measured at 2x200w with 0.03%thd measure it.. some other hfi site measured it higher than the rb1582 2 channel block, and they custom made each torriodal transformer themselves in-house.
Excellent 🤙
Damn.!!!! That's powerful.
It's a lie. Unless you listen to test tones instead of music. Also, why buy a 9 or 7 channel reciever for stereo 2ch listening?
In a home theater setup with 5.1 chs up to max channels, this AVR would run at 80W or less if used as intended.
@@ryanfuller5 I thought he said the other channels were loaded..
I love onkyo. I have 2 onkyo WRAT M-282 amps. Says it’ll put out 100 Watts per channel, when I tested it, it was able to do 400 Watts per channel at 2 ohms 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Also, they’re powering 8 Skar Audio 12” subs. slightly underpowered but they still push hard.
Oh yeah!!
AWESOME VIDEO BROTHER
Thanks for the review! I am considering buying this Rz 810 To be used as a preamp for my B&K AVR 307 monster. Have you ever done this test with any B&K receivers? Thanks!
Hi I haven’t tested any B&K AVR’s, sorry
You should test the Onkyo TX SR-805 or the TX NR-1009/1010 models! Those weighed close to 60lbs!
Pre amp outs = Crown amps in your home theater ? What are you using and how are they working for you ?
It's to bad they can't send you more home amps to test. Great video.
Awesome video Derek! Can you do more home theater recievers?
Possibly. I have a lot of plans moving forward
I have an Onkyo tx-nr818. So I was super stoked to see this. Thanks again!
I rewired the internal fans to turn on when the amp does. I also added a fan to suck out the heat and added a large heat sink to the power transformer and a little fan with a heat sink to the HDMI chip.
Good idea. Onkyo needs to do the same to protect the HDMI board
They don’t make them like they used to. I have a Yamaha z9 that weighs 70 pounds (7.1), and Yamaha z11 that weighs 88 pounds. Both can believe rated power at all channels driven.
haris javed class A/B? That could be a big difference
ADR yes those amps are class A/B. I know that the Z9 runs class A for first 10 Watts. The new amps just keep getting smaller and smaller because the power supplies keep shrinking.
Those are monsters! The top of the line receivers today are pretty heavy, but not that heavy
haris javed You answered my question too. Lol
Nice. Didn’t know BiGDWiz did home audio
that Donkyo doe! Because big Bawlz!
Nice word on plays
I never realized it, but every time I drive to Florence near my home I pass Incriminator Audio! Have you ever tested one of their amplifiers?
I had an Onkyo die on me. I have Pioneer Elite VSX-LX301 now. It's much better IMO. I also have a Pioneer that's hanging on by dear life. It's in my shed popping and cracking if it's over 85 degrees outside.
Onkyo had a issue with their receivers a few years ago where the dts chips would overheat. They've fixed it now. Onkyo owns Pioneer now and I think they took some of their design.
Onyko and pioneer are the same company now
Man would love to see you get your hands on some of the McIntosh tube amps for dyno!!
Would be nice 👍
Hey Big D, I would love to see a dyno test of a Denon AVR 1911 home theater receiver. That's what I am running and have been running since 2011. Thanks. Keep up the great videos.
We shall see. I like to mix it up a bit with home and car
BigDWiz cool
Impressive!
Just like your knowledge of old school cheater amps 😬🤙
BigDWiz you tryna butter me up! 😜
