Nice video Scott. I quit using the 500 rule several years ago. I use 4-6 seconds myself. Now I use a tracker and shoot my Milky Way for 45-50 seconds.

A PS to the main post. I also take multiple images of the Milky Way. Sometimes up to 25 shots. Then you can put on the lens cap and shoot about 10 dark frames. Use Sequator on my PC to combine and you get noiseless clear shots. You don't need a tracker to do this either.

Lovely, made a nice change from your other work and got my appetite for Astro again so will dust up my 7r2 and Loawa 15mm f2 but not necessarily the Milky Way as never seen it my side of UK. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you, Victor, I'm glad you enjoyed it. And yeah ... get out there ... and have fun! :)

Hey, what a great idea, Scott! I have only done a couple milky way shoots in my photo days. But Jorgen and I are talking about doing more. We plan to do some in SE Arizona the end of this month and again in May in the Four Corners area. It should be really dark there. Glad to see your experience and I will remember to bring a chair. :)

There are a few good days in May 2022 coming. And bring two chairs ... Jorgen deserves to sit as well :-) Have fun!

I'm still a beginner in photography but that didn't stop me from trying astrophotography last Summer. Got some level of success, relatively speaking. But that was before I purchased PhotoPills. Found your video inspiring with tidbits of tips and tricks. Now I want to try it again LOL. Thank you for sharing.

I’m a novice as well. I do astro occasionally, and once in a while really want to do it. Each time I get a little better. My focusing was better on this go than my last. Have fun!

Excellent video - something I want to try but have no experience with photographing the heavens!! One issue that you didn't go into detail about was focusing.....how do you get the stars pin sharp?

Hi Nigel … I’m working on a podcast episode with the details (stopdownpodcast.com). The short version, manually focus on a bright star and get it as small as possible in your viewfinder.

@@ScottDavenport Thanks for that - looking forward to hearing the podcast

Nice one! Photopills seems like a worthwhile investment. Any caveats with the software?

No caveats I know of. It's on the pricier side for an app, around US$10. Like any app, check the requirements for certain phones, iOS/Android versions, etc.

4am? That right there is my biggest challenge with astro. That's like 8 hrs past my bedtime. Looking forward to seeing some processing videos to follow (hint hint).
Were you using some type of star glow filter to capture those Orion images or was that done in post? It looked really good.

The stay-out-overnight is the toughest part for me too. I have to really motivate myself (and bring strong coffee). The warmer SoCal climate helps too. No filters on the camera. The work was done in post. Video on that coming later this week. ;)

I am a newbie in astrophotography and recently moved to Temecula. is the location safe?

I felt no threat from other people (there were no others around). Common sense when in the desert applies as well (have water, be aware of scorpions, etc.). A healthy respect and awareness of the outdoors....
