@@philatio1744 From what I've seen, it was evidently made without Itsuno's input, so Dante came out kinda flat and the battle system wasn't even close to par with its predecessor or successors. I did hear though that it had a good story, and personally, I would like to try it. (I want to play all the core series, but only have access to 4 and 5)
Nah, Nero already knew what he had to do but was wavering because the whole situation was so crazy and intimidating. He's never had a family, how does he cope with this? The first time I played dmc3 I was 15 years old, and it changed me. Dante inspired me, this game marked my childhood and helped forge my personality, really. And now, playing dmc5, as an adult, with a full time job, responsibilities, and also seeing Dante as an old man, I mean... It all just comes full circle. It's beautiful. Thank you for this video , it sums it all beautifully ;)
I relate so much to the point about forming your own "combat story" in DMC5. I can recall a handful of special moments I pulled off in my playthrough that just made me grin from ear to ear and pump my fist in celebration. Truly a special game. I don't know how they'll ever top it if they decide to make DMC6.
We did it folks, all the memes, all the rumors, all the combo videos, and all the judgement nuts have been made for this moment. The perfect action video game has been made and it is here to stay.
It's just an amazing feeling to have DMCV deliver where KH3 and MGSV were promising. Itsuno came into the field, called his home run outta the park and gave the people what they wanted. Definitely a top 5 game experience. Glad it could deliver for others what it had for me.
It annoys me when people say we didn't like games because the wait and hype was too long, DMC5 proves that even if we have 10 years worth of hype, game developers can still make games that satisfy.
Tbf, kh3 is pretty good now. They fixed issues with the combat abd gave the hardcore fans the fights they wanted. Mgsv would probably be the only one that kinda failed but id say thats more konamis fault with some convulated storytelling from kojima
@@Garry_Combine oh i dont disagree. Mgs4 was just an interactive movie to appeal to fans. That said, it doesnt take away from the first 3 games and 5 actually was decent for what it had. Its rlly only the cliffhanger at the end i personally dont like
@@MisterPudd oh, don't get me wrong, I enjoy 4 and 5, but I just don't like Kojima and Death Stranding was what did it for me. I'm pretty sure the first 3 games had a second writer, which probably helped to alleviate Kojima's negative attributes, but again, I still enjoy 4, PW and 5. But I was also a fan of Portable Ops, which to be honest, at least narrative wise, I think is a better sequel to MGS3 whilst Peace Walker is just more fun to play on the go. But then again, Hideo was Producer, not director. Either way, good series with problems here and there but at least MGS ain't Death Stranding, lol.
One thing I loved in DMC5 is how Nero, just like Vergil, also seeks power throughout the entire game. Unlike Vergil though, he seeks it for virtuous causes and actually attains the power he seeks.
@@Ithenos oh it was. Ya got Dante wanting to stop his brother...again....and you have lil devil hunter Nero all in his feelings. Then...cause he doesn't want people to die...he unlockes his devil trigger.....he didn't grow, he just fought less powerful demons and then screams and it happens.....DMC4 did his growth better.
Daniel Alvarez “DMC 4 did his growth better”......I mean at that point why bother arguing with him if his only pieces of logic boil down to dumbing down DMC 5’s story.
I prefer Gilgamesh, Balrog feels too weird with it's hitboxes. Friction (divekick) doesn't jc that smoothly unless you have ignition. to have ignition you have to do a stupid dance or punch the enemy 10 times. It's repetitive and limiting it makes it so you always have this guaranteed downtime of switching modes no matter what and you can only attack while switching modes in two ways. It's actually kinda awful tbh... King Cerberus is a lot better. the Neo Balrog mod improves it a lot though
The idea of ignition and balrog modes kinda ok with but it's execution is soooo limiting and antithetical to DMC. You don't feel like you have freedom to switch between modes it feels like the modes are limiting you from having the freedom you should have... if that makes sense, and ignition is just kind of baffling how they implemented it. The mod that simply makes more of Balrog's moves build up ignition so you don't have to keep doing the same things over and over if you don't want just feels like such a no brainer
DMC5 is the perfect send off for the series with how every loose end in the series is neatly tied but with enough of an opened ending for the series to maybe move into the future, as well as a love letter to the fans from Itsuno. All the callbacks and references to pretty much every game in the series(barring that misguided reboot) had me grinning from ear to ear the whole way through the game. I even got choked up a little bit at the end. When that BIG REVEAL, that all the fans knew but the series and characters FINALLY admit, happened and how it happen... well let’s just say I was floored. It was such perfect timing in the story, and really made those last 3 missions matter just that much more to me. And let’s not forget that combat! Holy shit man!! There has never been an action game, hell even just game in general, that has as much depth and allows you look as cool as in DMC5’s combat. It takes EVERYTHING in the series’s past and cranks it all up to 12! FUCK 11! It skips that pussy shit and punches past to 12. It’s a near perfect game. Now I only say near perfect rather than perfect because of two things. One is that you can’t play as a certain character(my favorite character btw), that part bummers me out but I’ve heard there’s DLC on the way so fingers crossed. The second one is the battle themes. They’re good songs don’t get me wrong but they just aren’t on the level of DMC3(even 4), as I would have liked them to be. “Taste the Blood,” Dante’s battle theme from DMC3 is still the definitive battle theme of the series for me personally, and I really missed that heavy metal music during battles. Other than those two things DMC5 is the definitive DMC game by far.
EXACTY!!! While I personally love the battle themes, I agree with you on everything else. DMC5 is by far the best DMC in my eyes. Now if only we can get some Vergil DLC...
ya I love how every good DMC game raises the bar for the whole genera so much, unfortunately, the character you are talking about does not appear to be getting DLC but there are some good looking fan mods for that character and while I agree with you about subhuman and crimson cloud I have to say that devil trigger, in my opinion, is one of the best tracks to come out of this franchise with the anime op track but I can see where you are coming from
If that fav character of yours is Vergil, well it looks like its your lucky day lmao. And not only that, his Battle theme is a fucking banger. Bury the Light IMO is one of the better battle themes in the entire franchise and represents Vergil's character arc so goddamn well.

Watching DMC5's real time cutscenes play in 144FPS flawlessly with no sync issues or stuttering is genuinely the most "next gen" thing I ever witnessed to this day.
Gaming Brit has produced easily the best review of this game without a doubt. Unlike all these game journalists who rushed out a review without even learning the game's mechanics properly.
This is what gaming "journalism" is lacking, content that looks deeper into these games mechanically, systemically and understanding its place in modern culture. Compared other mediums like literature, film and music etc. games have yet to reach that level of discussion by seemingly professional publications. Read any professional movie review/analysis compared to an IGN or gamespot review and it's clear which medium is more respected at least as a profession, somewhat gratifying to see channels on youtube produce more insightful editorials and reviews than some of these outlets.
Oh yeah 1 and 2 are great, Brit's referring to the 4 games released in the time frame between DMC4 and 5, those being all 3 made by Bethesda and the actually good one.
@@Diamond1234548 ok, i assume the good one is new vegas which i love it's my favorite fallout. though i still think 3 is fine, but that because it was the first one i played.

A few of the cool aspects were actually cribbed from DmC, the reboot, which is pretty weird to think about. But Itsuno apparently likes it, or aspects of it. So it's interesting to see the dev take some positive elements from a largely hated title. But then, it ain't the first time that's happened. Rebellion and Bloody Palace both made their debuts in Devil May Cry 2, after all... DMC5 is absolutely my favorite in the series. I just hope the rumored DLC content turns out to be true--Ladies' Night for Trish and Lady, and fully-playable Vergil. That would just make my fucking decade.

@@sulthanarya3281 Itsuno helped the development *later on,* and at this point it's impossible to say whether or not the game would have been a superior narrative product had it not changed course mid-development. That said, I have heard the gameplay was a mess before Itsuno stepped in. So it would be more "they didn't get it right, and Itsuno course-corrected." Which is also apparent the case for DMC2, to an extent, although it seems that wasn't enough to save it.

Your not wrong about wanting to start a new chapter for this channel, but with all the years you've covering action games and talking about DMC, you got your own legacy to live up to and exceed now. Just remember to throw in a DMC reference at the end of your video's every now and again for old times sake....provided we do go like 2 or 3 video's without one by some strange unforeseen misfortune.
When you put into perspective how much was crammed in between DMC4 and DMC5 just made me appreciate this release all the more. Excellent review as always! Been ITCHING to hear your thoughts, and naturally, not disappointed.
DmC:DMC had no reason to exist but to be another product of Inafune's dumb pushes to westernize Capcom's games. If it wasn't DmC:DMC's name, it would have been forgotten, just like the two games Ninja Theory did before it, one of which DmC:DMC plays extremely similar to right down to the triggers switching attack modes.
I've watched this masterpiece of a video so many times. When people ask me why DMC5 is my favorite game, I show them this video. It perfectly communicates the expectations for the game, the history of the franchise, and how despite everything against this game, it released and max acted our expectations.
Not sure if I’m in the minority or in the majority, but as this being my fist DMC game, I almost never use the red/gold orbs to revive myself and just restarted the nearest checkpoint. If I did use them, I always found myself unsatisfied by end of the mission because I always thought “Man I could’ve done better”.
That comment would hold more weight with the difficulty played listed. I never died once beating it on Human and new game plus threw me right up to Son of Sparta past Devil Hunter. 5 missions in and I’ve had to use two gold orbs out of the 40 o collected blasting through on easy mode. Point is the game showed me why those were even a thing in the game when it decided to skip me up a difficulty and I noticed bosses easily can be paywalls on “expert” but everything is a joke on easy.
This is the right mentality to play a DMC game. Back in the day, the old games had consumable items. HOWEVER, it was heavily discouraged to use due to rank penalty aka less resources reward->taking longer time to upgrade.
Basically like every other games journalists. Shower DMC5 with unanimous praise, while passive aggressively bagging on the game for not being DmC 2. It's annoying, I wish those DmC fans (including games journalists who disliked DMC franchise) be thanos-snapped out of existence.
Just saying, Nier Automata was barren for artistic reasons, and even then it still looks good. Same goes for Bayonetta 1 and 2. They don't look bad at all. But, you're right. DMC 5 looks unbelievably good.
It was barren for artistic reasons but also had real low quality textures and some PS3 unreal looking stuff. That game wasnt a huge looker by any means really. Amusement Park and Tower were great but you spend most of your time in a generic ruined city and visually monotonous desert.
To me, Nier: Automata's biggest flaw is just how expansive the world is. I understand it needs to convey the idea of a truly desolate landscape, but it gets rather tiresome to traverse after a while. That being said, the game as a whole was an absolute marvel and one of the best I've played in the last decade.
I watched this review back when it came out, and now that I played through the game and am paying mission 19 and 20 every single day. This video gives my emotion words, that I could not have topped myself - the sheer euphoria that I felt when I first saw the trailer, the squealing I let out when I saw that I could buy the game with a discount and didn't have to save up for the next week, the tears on my face when I got to misson 10, the whirlwind of emotions I was blasted away by during the entirety of the second half of this game. This is the best resolution we could've ever hoped for. Thank you, tgb for making this video, and thank you for being my gateway into this franchise.

Not every game is Devil May Cry though. That's an established franchise beloved by gamers. NieR:Automata was a gamble, nobody except Platinum, Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito believed in the game during production. The latter of which had to put his job on the line in order to get that game greenlit and leave all creative freedom to Yoko Taro. Good games sell, that's a truth the industry is skeptical about. But now let's hope Yoko Taro gets a real budget for his next project.
I call bullshit. DMC was kicked in the nuts pretty hard ever since 4, with its budget cut and rushed release Then we got a shitty reboot because dumbass Inafune loves western cock. Then the fans had to wait ELEVEN YEARS to play the proper sequel, almost 2 generations of consoles later. You insinuated DMC5 got what it has easily because it's beloved. Wrong. That love was tested, time and time again, and if the fans hadn't been loud and demanding through it, showing there's a market for true hack and slash, Capcom would have just buried the series after the failed reboot, which we all thought they did for years. God of War sells even more than DMC and its sequel didn't get the same treatment despite its huge budget. Because it's not about budget, it's about someone as passionate as Itsuno putting his foot down and saying "either let me make this game for the fans or I'll quit this stupid-ass company."
And well, Cory Barlog became a pretentious narcissistic hipster after GoW II, which also explains why the new GoW sucks ass despite probably costing more than DMC5 and definitely selling more.
I tried to start with DmC 5 a few years ago but I wasn't motivated to rearrange my brain activity to learn a new combat system (pure laziness). So I just dropped it. Then I watched a few of your older videos and came to this one. This Review is so good it motivated me to try again and give myself a proper chance to not be such a sloth. I played through DmC 1, 3 and 4 since january and watched through all of your videos about them to finally get to DmC 5 last month. I loved the experience and after having finished the game for the first time I rewatched this video and I can't thank you enough for making it. Without it I would have never taken the time to learn appreciate this game. Thank you!

As soon as DMC5 came out and all the rave reviews were popping up all over the place, all I could think in the back of my mind was "Man, I just cannot wait for TGB to review this and gush all over it like its the best game he's ever played" and I'm glad you finally got to experience your 100/100 and glad I got to watch an awesome video.

@Johnny Flannigan It's not that it's a bad game, it's that it's a bad Devil May Cry game. It didn't really fit in the series well, the protagonist wasn't the hunter we all loved...people didn't like that. If it hadn't been introduced as a part of this series, it very probably wouldn't get such hate.
@Johnny Flannigan its great. but that thing carry DMC tittle. of course fans will compare it to original (reboot curse). which is its not enogh to meet fans expectation. for me i enjoy the reboot, and i love it if its come with different tittle. the upside down world concept is cool for me and gameplay not the worst. but realize the fact its carry dmc tittle i hate it.

@@philatio1744 From what I've seen, it was evidently made without Itsuno's input, so Dante came out kinda flat and the battle system wasn't even close to par with its predecessor or successors. Still contributed more than in dmc 4
Nah, Nero already knew what he had to do but was wavering because the whole situation was so crazy and intimidating. He's never had a family, how does he cope with this? Its scary to him, emotionally if not physically.
Kyrie is the one constant he's had, his love and presumably best friend. He just needed to hear her voice and her encouragement, and she knew that too. As she herself says "you always know what is right".
@@sharavy6851 but it's not odd phrasing. It's exactly what Nero needed to hear. She didn't say "figure it out yourself dawg, I don't fucking know about you're problems" she said "Have faith in yourself, and do what you KNOW is the right thing to do." The first time I played dmc3 I was 15 years old, and it changed me. Dante inspired me, this game marked my childhood and helped forge my personality, really.
@@MisterPudd Nah, after Death Stranding I mostly blame Kojima. Still blame Konami too, remember Kojima's boot-camp? I do...
Pfft. No, he only wanted power cause Dante hurt his feelings calling him dead weight. And he got the power up in a very corny way if you ask me.

@@UnifiedEntity Uh, did you forget that Nero was trying to stop his Uncle and dad from killing each other?

My impression to dmc5 Dante: I finally have a demonic motorcycle that I can use as a weapon . My dmc3 dream has been fulfilled. Balrog>Gilgamesh.
Balrog is definitely the best. The best of both worlds
Balrog > any gauntlet
Balrog> every single gauntlet in the franchise

Same Brutha, Same
I played the same way. Plus, the checkpoints are well placed and restarting from one also lets you bank red orbs, which is a nice tradeoff.
It means you're playing the game right.

Jeffrey Canzani
If the machines don't notice you and you hack as 9S then you can actually play as the machines. It made 9S 100 times more bearable.
Oh come on, Platinum just does slightly barren cities. See also Revengeance and Transformers Devastation.

A fanboy's review is never an objective review.
@@SPM0717 I have to disagree. Sometimes fanboys can be bias, but they can also be very critical of the franchises they love, since they want to see them improve. And honestly, it's better watching a review from a fanboy who at least knows the ins and outs of the franchise, than someone who has no idea what their talking about.
@@SPM0717 did you see how he reviewed dmc4, or most of the fanboys?... How about 2?....
@@vlad4o813 Just look at Nakey Jakey. Fanboy that's super critical on his favorite games. So yeah, this is the only review that really matters.
@@SPM0717 bet I can find more issues with this game than you

OHHH I BEEN WAITING FIVE YEARS FOR CHARLIE TO REVIEW THIS!
Let's see how long it's gonna take for the inevitable DMC reference this time smh
BRO... hands down this is my fav dmc5 review. You were just as elated as I was when i played this master peice. I have never heard of you but I just subbed. Thank you
Something I just realized that is so cool, you had the hood on and when the explosion happened it blew off 18:10
The time has come and so have I
HYPEEEE
Not every game is Devil May Cry though. That's an established franchise beloved by gamers.
NieR:Automata was a gamble, nobody except Platinum, Yoko Taro and Yosuke Saito believed in the game during production.
The latter of which had to put his job on the line in order to get that game greenlit and leave all creative freedom to Yoko Taro.
Good games sell, that's a truth the industry is skeptical about.
But now let's hope Yoko Taro gets a real budget for his next project.
I call bullshit. DMC was kicked in the nuts pretty hard ever since 4, with its budget cut and rushed release
Then we got a shitty reboot because dumbass Inafune loves western cock.
João Paulo well that’s one hell of a hot take
@@tumulovermelho93 I actually agree tbh, GoW sucks and felt terrible to play.
Holy fuck if Atlus had the money to make a Raidou game this good I would literally stop existing in real life
I tried to start with DmC 5 a few years ago but I wasn't motivated to rearrange my brain activity to learn a new combat system (pure laziness).
Thank you!
It's been a long time coming but it finally came...
And So Have I
Thaat is really passionate review haha. When I saw 1 hour long I just "Well, i'll hear another time..... but let me check atleast a bit" and cant stop listen haha.
Very nice. we need more games with that passion!
Something tells me this guy loves enemy-stepping and using the Royal Guard.
Been jumping back to your channel million times for these for ages since the realease. Tnx man!
Why did that sound like Sphere Hunter saying "the story so far"?
Because it is.
Because it is her voice?
Because it was, Truly this is the perfect review.
I’m honestly more excited for this video than I was for the game itself
I love your channel and would love to know what you thought of the game.
Oof dunno if that's good or bad
Your compilation of what happened in 11 years is great. Mind-blowing how fast we move now.
Its always nice to see someone appreciate a game/ series as much As you do , i also love the bargain bin donguri comment , gave me a good chuckle ,
Absolutely masterful video, Charlie. I've been a fan of your channel since the beginning and have followed this journey for so long, it's really amazing to not only get this glorious game but also to see that you got everything you wanted too. The world and this industry might sometimes be incredibly disheartening, but sometimes good things can still happen.
Dang i literally just commented on another one of your video before seeing this in my feed
It's been a hot minute since I've seen anything of you (video, social media, etc.) Hope you're well and all that
I guess for me at least, you can say that this game is up there with Zelda Breath of the Wild and Doom 2016 as games that go back to the roots of the series and modernize then while staying true to what's come before, creating something compelling and fresh in the process.
DmC, forged in the cauldron of Cambridge and like most forgeries it was never quite as good as the real thing, thank god for Devil May Cry 5.
Incredible video! I feel so glad that I found this channel early enough to feel the scale of your journey! To be completely honest, I haven't even played the DMC games, I just find your enthusiasm so infective that I watch all the videos anyways.
This is the best DMC5 video on RUclips meaning it’s the best video on RUclips
This Video is 5 Years Old Now!
