Vinland was a real place, its a viking name for America. Lief Erickson was also a historical character, he was one of the first viking settlers in the American continent. Also hyped for this series, S1 is great, S2 is a masterpiece
Ylva is real for crying in that scene, she really doesn't understand her dad at all. Although there's more to Thors like you said, he went out of his way to bring a man to life, give him hope and finally the decency of a proper burial.
I'm excited to see your reactions. Vinland Saga is one of my favorite anime, manga, and stories in general that I've ever experienced. No joke, I'm a better human being today for having experienced it.
Since Vinland Saga is one of my favorite animes of all time (and I love viking and norse stuff in general) I've decided to give some more info on what you or others might be missing. The battle the show starts off on is The Battle Of Hjörngavágr(Hyo-run-ga-wag?) which is believed to be an actual battle that took place in Norway (there are very few records from that time after all, so it's hard to say anything with 100% certainty). The art on Wikipedia page features an illustration of an hailstorm during the battle (which was well depicted also in the show). The art was drawn by Halfdan Egedius. I imagine that's where the author took the name for the chain guy, whose slave escaped. Vinland is another name for what we know as America now. It's said that a viking, named Leif Eriksson discovered America way before Columbus actually did. Vinland Saga is loosely based on multiple different viking sagas and stories and most likely modified for it to be interesting to the people watching/reading Vinland Saga. A lot of it is made up and fiction, but there are a lot of historical figures in the show that I'll bring up when the time is right. Jormungand as it was said in the show, or as it's more commonly written, Jörmungandr (if you were to say it like you were speaking english, it would be said something akin to: Yor-mun-gun-dar) is a world serpent in norse mythology who lives in the sea and basically surrounds the earth (since they did think earth was flat). The second episode starts off with Vikings being killed while taking their customary Saturday bath. Not sure how true that was but from what I can find, it is. Fun fact: a lot of people think medieval people were generally dirty and didn't take care of themselves but in fact, they took very good care of themselves. Combing their hair, taking baths and dressing well. Nobody wants to be around someone who smells bad. Even back then. Since this takes place around the year 1000 AD(give or take), Vikings have been at war with England for a long time now and as one can expect, neither side really tolerates the other. More or less, for people who aren't familiar with history (that includes me), the king of Denmark pretty much employed Vikings as soldiers to fight the English anglo saxons. Vikings were originally from Sweden, Denmark and Norway, the last of which was claimed by King Harald. Some people didn't want to live under him so a lot of them fled to Iceland(around 700-800 AD). Valhalla, (straight from Google - hard to give a better explanation tbh) in Norse mythology, is the hall of slain warriors, who live there blissfully under the leadership of the god Odin. Valhalla is depicted as a splendid palace, roofed with shields, where the warriors feast on the flesh of a boar slaughtered daily and made whole again each evening. The Jomsvikings (Yorms-vikings in English pronunciation I guess?) was a group of elite vikings that may have existed. They are mentioned here and there in legends but no real evidence of them is found. Thors was one of them and he fled the battle at the start of the first episode. You can see his helmet in the chest. They were very strong and thus, cost a lot to employ. I hope you love the show. Hope some of this info showed some more light on the setting of this show. Edit: They are trying to kill Thors though these mercenaries so it wouldn't look like the king ordered Floki to do it. They are literally trying to blame his killing on someone else. They are trying to do it like this because he deserted the army in the battle at the start of the first episode. Think of this like the usual trope of a spy or whatever having their last job be a setup to kill them instead so there wouldn't be any threat from the spy to the people who employed them.
09:42 I appreciate how you took a moment and asked what Thors would do *after a couple minutes* "give him back his slave"🤣🤣 13:54 as a non native english speaker I take pride in correcting english speakers that its 'sheep' and not 'sheeps'☝🤓
please keep an open mind during your watch of this show i don't want you to end up like everyone else where the message of the show just flies over their heads
Ali since Inuyasha is your favorite you should check out the Ranma 1/2 remake in October when it comes out! plus MAPPA is doing the remake so you know it'll look amazing!
it was never explicitly told about flokis motivations. always from second hand unreliable sources. but it feels like a political killing, floki wanted to cement his status by killing potential rivals for jomsviking leadership

Yeah, vinland saga is historical fiction, very fun to see the historic events in the context of this story
Not only Leif, but most of the main cast is historical figures
Ylva is real for crying in that scene, she really doesn't understand her dad at all.
