  • This video features a NCRS Top Flight 1965 L78 396 C2 M20 4 Speed Corvette graded at 95.4% accuracy. A score of 94% or higher is required for a Top Flight rating. This is a numbers matching car, to say the least, dressed in Nassau Blue paired with Bright Blue interior. The L78 was Chevy’s first ever big block engine, and only 759 1965 Corvettes came with factory side pipes across all engine options. This is a very rare car in excellent condition, closely resembling how it was the day it left St. Louis, MO after final assembly on July 26, 1965. Please like and share the video and let me hear your thoughts down in the comments.

I am Ernie and Eva's daughter. My dad would have loved to have his car get this attention, and I am so happy that Mike obviously loves the car as much as my dad did. The car has gone to the perfect person. And Mike has been so kind to keep in touch with my mom sending updates and pictures. My dad was such a great guy, I wish you could have met him!

Glad the video found its way to you! Your dads work is phenomenal, and he sounds like a great man. It was very very cool to get to know this car and how detailed it was. I’m glad you and your family were fine with me sharing. I’m sorry for your loss, but hopefully seeing it again brings back some great memories!

Ernie was my grandpa, and your video made me tear up. He would have loved to know the car is in such good hands with Mike and that people are enjoying it as much as he did. We miss him so much and this means a lot. Thank you for making this.

I was hoping this made its way to y’all. It’s been very humbling the words you and a few others have share about this project since I posted it yesterday. When I brought up the idea to Mike, I had no clue of the personal story that would come out of it and as I started digging into how to structure the video, I found myself drawn to that story more so than even the corvette itself. I really appreciate your family letting me share it and I’m glad to have had a very positive impact with that. Not many people have that level of detail and dedication in their work, but normally when they do, that care spills over into other areas of life as well. It was easy to put together pretty early in that he was a great man.

The reason Chevy came out with a 396 in 1965 was because of GM's mandate of no engines over 400 c.i. They changed that for the Corvette in 1966 with the L72 427. Note that the hp for the L-78 and L-72 was 425 hp. Again GM was not crazy about advertising hp above 425 hp. In fact, the L-72 made 450 hp. Yenko did a lot of promotion on that engine with their COPO Camaros. I myself have a 1965 L-78 Coupe. Very well done video and from what I have read, Ernie was a fabulous man and well respected.

Thanks for giving it a watch and I appreciate the insight. I actually just had a buddy buy a Yenko replica with the correct 427 at Barrett Jackson a few days ago. Although a replica, it’s stunning. Thank you, that means a lot coming from another L78 owner!

I was very fortunate to help Ernie achieve his goal of restoring this car. I have many fond memories of working with Ernie doing all the bodywork on this car. While it’s sad he’s not here to enjoy his car, I’m glad to see someone treating it with the same care Ernie would. Thanks for the video. Mark F.

I appreciate you commenting Mark. You did some great work on this car as well by the looks of it! I was really glad to have stumbled upon this story. I had no clue going to cars and coffee that morning would lead to this video, but I’m thankful to have seen Ernie’s amazing work up close. And to be able to share the story for others to enjoy.

WE loved Ernie as a true friend. As retired welder. I had the pleasure to help him on his build.
My wife and I are still friends with Eva. Of course, we truly miss Ernie. He had hands of gold. Paul and Sandy K.

I’m glad you were able to see the video. His work was some of the best I’ve ever seen. That’s awesome you helped on the car. I never met him, but have loads of respect for the man and appreciate you sharing!

Thank you for a video so well put together and the ride along, that was a treat. I even enjoyed the sunflowers (thank you Kansas). The video also reminded me that my Dad was a top mechanic. He too punched out his 396 .060 over and installed a high performance cam. It always sounded like it was gonna die at the traffic light. I'm pretty sure there's a car show in town this weekend. You have a great weekend neighbor. You've got me in the mood to head to CL (Chevelle).

I owned a '65 Roadster in burnt orange w/black interior, with the L78 396/425 HP vette w/offroad exhaust...bought it in the D.C. area in '76 when I was a young Marine. I've had many modern cars that were faster (I currently own a 2018 Porsche GT2 RS), but man was that vette a blast and very reliable too...I drove it from D.C. back to Cocoa Beach, Fl., several times in the four years i owned her. And did the girls ever love that car...it was a chick magnet. I paid $4,200 for her in '76 and sold her four years later for $5,200. I was in Engineering College and the thing got 9 mpg if you could keep your foot out of the throttle, haha and i couldn't afford to drive her.
