Wow! This is a project I have spent years considering, and just recently dove head first into planning out. I happened to find your videos because there was something I wanted to figure out being new to Sketchup then realized you had a whole series about the exact project I am planning.
After endless hours upon hours of research on the subject, I can honestly say your videos are BY FAR the most informative I have seen on building a cabinet. From planning all the way down to what is needed to execute, your attention to detail and perfection has given me a whole new perspective on this project. Having little experience with woodworking, and not many tools, I now know what I can achieve with what I have. I am glad you had access to all of that machinery. It only aided the "you can do all of this with a jigsaw" idea purely because of your way of instructing and explaining how and why you did exactly what you were doing.
Magnificent work. Liked and subbed. Hell I this may be my first ever comment on this site, but this series has blown me away. And im actually not finished!!! On to see how you finalize this beast!
Dude! Thanks for your comments. Comments like these make all of the work and all of the countless hours making/filming/editing worth while.
I'm glad you are enjoying the vids and are getting lots from them. Please feel free to share on your social media as I am having a tough time breaking through the youtube algorithms.
I hope your cabinet turns out great and I would love to see your finished design when your done, just send it to me on instagram. Yes I am lucky to have a nice shop but really it can be done with only a few basic tools. Perhaps in a future build I will use only a jigsaw, drill, and a router to show that.
Once again, thanks for your comment, it made my day for sure! Cheers.
The marquee monitor looks to be upside down at the end of the video. Either by design or corrected at some point. :)
Good eyes! Yeah when I measured the 29" ultrawide display area, I didn't notice that the bottom lip of the bezel was bigger than the other 3 sides. So if I put the screen in, it didn't line up with my cut out for the marquee....it was about 1/4" off. So I flipped the monitor and it was perfect, all I had to do was put a line of code in the raspberry pi to rotate the display 180 degrees. Gotta love tech! Cheers!
Went from shopping on facebook for a $500+ version of this to watching your vids for the last hour. I have 2 extra 32 inch tvs and a ton of plywood just sitting around already i bet i could build a less fancy version pretty cheap. Gonna do some sketching tomorrow. Subscribed
Thanks for the sub, much appreciated! Yeah that's awesome. I'm excited for you. Please send me some pics of the finished cabinet, Id love to see it when your done. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. Cheers!
Why is the terminal output on the marquee monitor upside down?
When I designed the digital marquee bezel I put the hole right in the center of the bezel so it would look good. When I got the LG 29" ultrawide monitor I measured the screen size but didn't notice that the screen was not centered on the top to bottom direction. So the only way to keep the cut out centered was to flip the monitor. It worked out ok though because it was really easy to flip the monitor in retropie.
Amazing job! It certainly shows (me) how much detail and woodworking still is needed to make it look really great. So, um, 2 questions:
1) How much does it weigh fully assembled? This guy will clearly be study as heck... but that means that it's probably several hundred pounds fully built?
2) ... Is this at school? Do your kids get to to play with the end result?
Thanks Kirk! Ya know, once you get all the monitors, and parts in these cabinets are all several hundred pounds. However, I wont be worrying about whether this one will be falling apart. It rolls around just fine and it really doesn't move once you place it somewhere anyways. Yeah it was at the school but During the pandemic I moved it to my house in order to finish it. So the students didn't get a chance to play it. They are playing my vpin cabinet that I building now though. Thanks fir the watch Kirk!
Just realized that this was 4 years ago. Caught me off guard with the "CoVID-19edition". Another banger. Keep up the great work!
Yeah time rips eh? Covid sucked so much.....Thanks for the watch!
How is your joystick/button reaction? I used the same HW in a mini NES case some years ago. It has very noticeable input lag. Did you run into this and if so what is the solution? Thanks.
Strangely enough I noticed that some systems are worse than others. Mame seems ok but NES is laggy for sure. The controller I use for adding player 3 and 4 has no lag. I'm going to eventually upgrade to some leaf spring buttons to see if I can get rid of that. I bought some groovy game gear ice buttons that I still have to test out on my virtual pinball build but I will be doing a video on that first if your interested in those. Thanks for the watch!
May I ask why you mounted the power input so high on the cabinet? It seems like it would make more sense to have it lower to the floor. Less weight hanging on the C13-C14 connection, etc. I assume I am missing something in regards to your setup?
I'm lazy....lol. Didn't wanna bend over to plug in....lol. It's been a while but it might have been because the power bar cord length limited how far away it could have gone. The iec 320 plug fits very snug on the cord so it's not a concern about hanging it. You can put that plug anywhere your design works! Thanks for the watch.
Didn't you record the stage where the lcd marquee was placed and fixed into the marquee space. And how the mount bracket was attached to the screen. I miss that part really . tnx.
I filmed that series a long time ago but I know it's in one of those videos for sure. Pretty sure I used the VESA mount to a metal angle iron bracket on that one. Thanks for the watch!
I've seen some people who made cabinets did not bother to make a bezel..they just took a monitor and stuck it in. So when you look closely inside you'd see the brand of the monitor..so funny
Yeah you can't have the veil of realism lifted since your trying to make it feel like real pinball. To be honest, I had a ton of fun just playing on my tv turned sideways and leaned up against the wall. Vpin rocks!
So one thing I'm noticing is there's plenty of room for a kegerator and mount the tap on the side. I'll add that to my notes.
Oh there's tons of room and a kegerator would be awesome! Mind you, I'd need to put Tapper vinyl graphics on it!
Is there a reason that I haven't thought of as to why you hinged your control panel from the front not the back?
If I remember correctly, if I put the hinge at the back, it would have it the sides or the monitor bezel and not fully opened. So I put it on the front and it works great. Thanks for the watch!
I could watch these videos over and over and over!!!! Awesome awesome job and incredible attention to detail! What an artist! 👍🤜✌️
You are too kind. Thank you for the praise, it is awesome to hear back from viewers as these videos are soooo much work to film/edit/teach in a way that I feel will be the best for learning. I have decided that my niche on youtube is highly detailed videos that are still interesting so that people will learn/remember/know how to do what I am showing. Thanks for the watch and the sub!
@@wayofthewrench absolutely. Only people who actually make RUclips videos or videos in general can appreciate how much work goes into your videos! 🙌👍👌
Oh for sure! So much work. I'm still learning but it would be safe to say that for every hour of video there is probable 10 to 20 times that with setup and take down, retakes, filming, editing, finding decent royalty-free music, making thumbnails, etc....
man I miss just making stuff...lol.
Thanks for adding Way of the Wrench to your suggested channels!
Great video
Thanks! It was a fun project and I liked it so much, I am now building a virtual pinball cabinet. You should check it out. Thanks for the watch!
at the 28:30 mark, what is the giant impeller housing behind you?
Those parts are for our brand new welding extraction system for our welding booths.....pretty cool stuff. There's actually a video showing it on my channel. Cheers!
What diameter flush trim bit did you use for the monitor cut out?
Not sure but it was pretty small like 1/2" or 5/8" diameter. Really any diameter will work, it's just your preference of the radius you want in the corner. Cheers!
Great DIY video on a retro cab making. Thumbs UP! Where was this shot? Look like it might be at a college somewhere. I saw classroom desks in the background of one of the edits.
Thanks Neal, glad you liked the video series! If ya liked this, you should watch my current virtual pinball build. I'm a high school shop teacher so most of this was shot in the woodshop or my Automotive class. Thanks for the watch!
At 10:17 i like how you take the bezels off the old tv to mount the the tv on the wood. I never seen somebody done this before when making a arcade machine.
Yeah I did that so it would fit past the glue blocks but it also made the screen about 1/2" closer to the bezel which made it look for flush. You just have to watch that you aren't touching anything on the backside when it is on as there are electrical components/connections that you can't touch or you'll get electrocuted.
What size TV did you use. I keep missing it...
The main screen is a used 32"Samsung 1080p tv that was being tossed due to a broken volume button. Desoldered it and soldered in another one and it works great. The digital marquee is a new 29"ultrawide monitor from LG
Great video. It's basically what I want to make except have a track ball and light guns. What raspberry pi did you use for this? I ask bc I've seen performance concerns with having 2 monitors hooked up for the marquee.
Do you notice any performance issues displaying a picture on the marquee monitor while running a game?
Thanks and great video
Thanks! This does have a trackball and there are usb pass through sockets for game controllers or light guns if you want.
I have no performance issues with the game at all with this setup but the marquee changing is a bit slow. A future upgrade to this cabinet will be putting in a pc with BigBox. I have already messed around with it and it is lightning quick and has no problems at all running games like Killer Instinct, etc. Thanks for the watch!
Do you send to Brazil?
😂😂😂😂😂
I want your machine, it is perfect.
.. 🤩🤩🤩🤩
Congratulations on your wonderful project.😀😀😀😀
Hugs from Rio de Janeiro (January River) - Brazil
LOL, I love my arcade cabinet too! I think it turned out exactly how I wanted it to and it is a blast to play. At this time, I am not making cabinets for people. I did the videos as a way for people to find out how to design and make their own cabinets. I do have plans for my cabinet in the description if you want to make my design though. If you do make it, I'd love to see when your done. Cheers!
Wataaaaaa ...y am I watching this? Your technical skill is impressive 👍🏼
Lord I wish I had an industrial cross cut sled. I have a worksite saw I built into a table, maaaaybe ill try cutting out the back door on that and clamping some straight edges. Or see if I can plunge cut with my circular saw . I'm super annoyed that it'll might take me 2 sheets to get this done and even MDF is nearly 40 bucks a sheet now. But ah well, it'll be worth it.
Yeah the prices for everything gotten out of control. I know I did it on a nice table saw but you can do this with a plunge cut on a circular saw like you said, you just gotta be careful. Could always drill a hole in two corners and use a jig saw too and then just use wood filler/sand the hole detail away.
Great work! Why is the marque displaying upside down?
Thanks Gavin! When I designed the cabinet I didn't realize that the bezel was the same size all around but the back of the bottom was a lot bigger. So I turned it upside down because the top of the monitor was thinner and fit like I designed. Then I just had to insert 2 lines of code to flip the display. Thanks for the watch and enjoy the rest of the series!
@@wayofthewrench Thanks, got me hooked. I'm watching currently and planning out my cabinet. Currently mine is a "One UP" cube from Mario Bros :P
Cool idea!
I am loving your attention to detail
Thank you. I'm trying really hard to teach people in a way that they can really understand what I am doing. I don't want to make videos that just show an awesome project but there is no information for people to learn from it or make it themselves. There is enough of those already. I am trying to find my niche in the sea of RUclips videos but I think I have found it. Thanks for your comment and if you are enjoying the arcade build videos, you will like the gearhead and welding videos too. Cheers!
Is that top monitor upside down? oops!
Yes it is because the bottom bezel width was bigger than the top and my design was planned out for the thinner bezel on the top edge of the monitor. So I flipped it upside down and added one line of code to flip the display..easy peasy.
Hey Dude, what is the Slovakian map doing there??? :-) Greetings from Slovakia.
I was wondering how long it would be before someone saw this from Slovakia! LOL. I am Canadian and Slovak. The map of Slovakia is all of the villages and cities I have been to. I really love in there and have tried to see as much of Slovakia as I can. My favorite place is Banská Štiavnica. Where are you in Slovakia? My family is from a tiny village called Lab near Bratislava. Ahoy!
Great build.
Can you tell me more about the bluetooth setup ie. what brand/model is the bluetooth receiver. I like the idea of both Pi and BT audio so I presume there is some kind of amplifier/box that both inputs go into to mix the sound.
Thanks for an informative video... half-way through building my own and this really helped me :)
Thanks! I had a blast making this beast.
I used a Logitec z337 bluetooth 2.1 computer stereo. The only hook up is the audio jack from the raspberry pi that runs Retropie. The other music (or anything you want) will connect through bluetooth. Once you set it up, it connects automatically and you can play music with the touch of a play button on your phone. The volume for the arcade game is controlled by the knob and the music volume is controlled on your phone so the 2 can be adjusted to hear what you want to hear louder. This really is one of the cool features on this cabinet that I like to show off to friends.
That's cool that you are building one, I'd love to see some pics when your done!
Ive done something very similar. My advice to anyone that isn't as handy with building a cabinet would be to buy a old worn out arcade cabinet and refurb it.
Yeah not a bad idea but I always feel bad about ruining a piece of arcade history doing that. Plus I can never seem to find a old cabinet for cheap enough. Thanks for the watch!
Hey brother I really enjoy your arcade videos. I rebuilt one years ago from an arcade graveyard. Basically stripped it sanded repainted and added my own components similar to yours.
Can you send me a link to your bluetooth setup between the speakers please. I want a better sound solution and yours seems perfect.
Thanks bruh! Glad you are enjoying the series and it's getting you motivated to build your own! Here is the link to the speaker set I used. www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/logitech-bluetooth-z337-21-speaker-system/apd/a9235957/pc-accessories?gacd=9683780-3008-5761040-266662033-0&dgc=st&gclid=CjwKCAiA25v_BRBNEiwAZb4-ZZO_cBgD-rkwh4M7tABw8dKwufrg3ZOKk8rAc6HmZSkPsO9ZqkH_nBoCrkAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds The bluetooth is super easy, just plug in the audio jack into the pi, plug it in, and pair up with your phone. The main volume controls the game volume and your phone controls the bluetooth. The volume is way louder than you need and this setup has been one of the best things on my cabinet. Cheers!
TVs/monitor sizes are measured diagonally I believe.
Yes they are measured from corner to corner diagonally. Thanks for the watch!
The cut to lock down coronavirus times ruined the illusion that this was all done in a few hours :)
Yeah, at least you know it was real life....not scripted. The amount of hours actually put into this project are pretty insane with planning, making, filming, editing, etc. Super fun project though and great to play on. So much fun, I'm building a virtual pinball cabinet now. You'll have to check it out.
@@wayofthewrench Yeh I've watched a few of the arcade videos now. Looking at hdmi screens on Gumtree, gonna give it a go. Thanks for taking the time to do the videos. I've subscribed to see what else you get up too. All the best from Scotland :)
Thanks for the sub and the watch all the way from Scotland! Glad you're enjoying the videos and they are inspiring you to build your own! Send me some pics when you get done!
Nice!!
Oh yeahhh...boyeeeee!
Can you tell me more about the monitor you used for the top, like the model number, and how the speaker setup is?
The digital marquee that monitor is a LG 29" ultrawide about $279 CAN. The speakers are a bluetooth Logitech 2.1 surround sound setup with remote volume knob/headphone jack. Thanks for the watch Michael!
19:37 what song is that?
Parasail Silent Partner. Pretty cool tune...
Went to download plans but there was nothing an took me to some automotive school lol
Yup, that's me.....I'm a shop teacher. The link is to the Way of the Wrench plans for any project I have in my videos. Cheers!
@@wayofthewrench I found the plans an I have started my build!
Exciting! Can't wait to see it when you're done! Enjoy the build Chris!
So this guy used his workshop class to make an arcade machine. nice.
Yup...this guy used what he had at his disposal and taught everyone how to use all of those machines/tools/processes. Let's be honest, wouldn't you do the same? I'll make a bartop cabinet in the future with just a jig saw and a drill. It can be done. Cheers!
Love the content! You do great work so I wanted to grab those plans to dig into this more but I can't seem to access the plans. I go to the link and can even search and find mention of it but there are no files or links to files. Have the plans been removed?
If you click on the words Way of the Wrench Arcade Cabinet Plans, it will pop up for you to view or download. I'd love to see your cabinet when your done, dm me some pics on Instagram. Cheers!
You did an awesome job on this cabinet. Well done man👏👍🤙🎮🕹
Thanks dude! Yeah it was an awesome build and it turned out nice. One of these days I'm gonna throw some upgrades into it including a new PC, spinners, Bigbox, etc. thanks for the watch and welcome to the channel!
Well...if you use raspberry pi you can't run high demanded consoles like N64, PSP, DC, PS2, GC, Wii, 3DS..if you run a PC you could run almost everything but the downside is that you'd have to deal with heat it and it costs more..you need at least a mini pc or so.
Yeah the rpi3b plus was used inside the control panel so it was removable and it would still work. I already have a pc that I installed Bigbox on and it now plays all of the systems you listed with no problems. I will eventually make some more videos on this series showing the upgrades I would like to do to it. Probably when I am done with my virtual pinball cabinet build. Thanks for the suggestions!
Hey there, Awesome build. I just built my first tabletop arcade. and i was wondering what speaker system did you end up using. You mentioned that its a bluetooth system, but i couldn't see what it was. having bluetooth in mine would make it multi purpose. !
Thanks dude! Sounds good!

Sweet little rig!
Hey! Do you have a parts list/final price available?
At this moment I don't have a full parts list or a final price break down, I was thinking I would do a video for both and talk about things I would change if I did it again. Plus I'm working on a upgrade the cabinet video series. There is a video where I talk about the parts and most of the links for the parts are in the description. Cheers!
nice coin ops music lol and nice cab aswell my friend
Thanks bruh! Is there music that coin ops uses? It is pretty hard to find decent royalty free music these days. Thanks for the watch!
@@wayofthewrench ruclips.net/video/AkvyB9eTteE/видео.html
Yup, same royalty free music.
I being watching your video for couples of days. I saw another cabinet you made., but this one is a must and my 32" samsung tv I have seating around will fit perfectly. where can I get the measure and parts you used for this cabinet. Or do you sell and ship them? I'm in Florida. Let me know
Thanks bruh! Glad you like it and yeah your 32" will be perfect. If you keep watching the videos, you'll see the link to the plans in the video description below. I'd love to see your cabinet when your done, send me some pics/video to my instagram. Cheers and thanks for the watch!
@@wayofthewrench thank you. I’m already subscribed to your channel, but the pdf link in your description take me to a Wordpress page for South Delta Secondary School Automotive Technology not to your pdf. Can you point me to where I can find the pdf file. Thanks
Yup that's the page, I'm a shop teacher. If you look at that page there are several links to pdfs if you click on the text. Just click on the one that says Way of the Wrench Arcade Plans. Cheers!
@@wayofthewrench I found it. Thanks for the quick reply
Amazing. I want to do this too but I'm scared to tackle it!
You got this Bro! You have this amazing series and you can ask questions and I'll help ya out. Just take it slow and you'll be fine. Thanks for the watch!
At 10:44 what is that app on your phone that help you measure the blade tilt.
On Android, it is called Angle Meter. Quick and easy to use. Free too!
Did you put glass over the bevel/tv? I did not see it in the videos
At this moment I do not have glass on my cab. The cabinet will be staying in my garage (no one is smashing the screen) so I might never put it on but if I do, I would like to try a light smoke glass. Apparently it makes the games look better. Probably a future video.
@@wayofthewrench I wonder how you would mount it? Any ideas?
Great question dude!
I would either buy or make up a bunch of thin metal brackets that look like little u's with small bolts welded to them. I would put 2 on the left and the right sides of the cabinet up near the top and two on the left and right but on the bottom of the glass (to hold the glass from sliding down). The control panel would need to be off for installing/removing. then I would drill 4 holes through the wood bezel surface (ensure they would go through any parts (monitor) before drilling. Then install brackets on glass first then put the glass/brackets into place while guiding the bolts on the brackets into the holes. Then tighten the nuts from the backside and install control panel.
Or you could have a thin channel of metal at the top and one at the bottom and make the bottom one removable so you could install/remove. Probably lots of ways to do it, but the best would be a design that planed for a glass install from the beginning.
Man I am probably over thinking this, I bet a couple nicely designed wood strips/brackets/hold downs would work perfectly and then you just screw them in near the edges. One for the top and one for the bottom.
On my next build it would be easier to cut a slot to slide the glass into to hold it in place on the left and right side panels of the arcade and design a slot from the top so you could slide the glass in or out from the top.
Cheers!
Perfect placement on the speakers. You nailed it.
Thanks, yeah those speakers look great in that cabinet,! Thanks for the watch and enjoy the series!
Hi what size screen did you use ? 40inch?
I used 32 inch Samsung TV and a 29 inch ultrawide LG monitor for the digital marquee. Really you could use any tv and just adjust the width of the pieces between the sides to suit.
How tô make an gabinet xevious please . From Brazil
The construction will be the same but you just need the plans for the dimensions. Search out the actual plans, they are out there. I once saw a website that has all of the original cabinet plans. Thanks for the watch!
Please, if you can find it, send me the link. I already looked and didn't find anything. Just the cabinet ready.
In America it seems to be easy to make one. Here it is difficult
Will do
What is the hardest part for you in Brazil?
Is it complicated to do a cabinet with a coin slot receptor that works with almost every arcade games...just like game over and you put a coin in to continue or to start another game. or is it not possible? Btw. I don't like the coin slot receptor they sell out there (looks cheaply made)..I want the one you'd normally see in the old arcade games with the door. that's nice.
No the coin mechanism is easy to wire up so a coin triggers a momentary switch that you set up as insert coin or whatever you really want on pc or on a rpi. The coin door I used is as authentic as it it gets, I actually stripped it from an old arcade machine and restored it for this build. I agree with you, there are some God awful cheap looking ones out there that look horrible. Thanks for the watch!
Great looking series. I downloaded the plans over Christmas. I wanted to try my hand at designing side artwork, and I was wondering if you had a one page PDF (or other file image) of the entire side of your cabinet that I can use as a template for the artwork?
I do not but all of the dimensions are there so it would take much to draw them up in what ever program your using for the artwork. When you're done, I'd love to see your Way of the Wrench arcade cabinet! Send the pics/video to my instagram dm. Good luck!
@@wayofthewrench Thx, will do.
How's the cabinet going?
Has anyone heard of a link to someone that will build these for money?
A custom build.
I dont have the time or space to build a cab.
You could look for a local maker space, they would have all the tools and help you would need.....plus this sweet tutorial series!
I went to the link where can I get the files from?

Thanks Ria clash! The second monitor is a 29" LG Ultrawide, just search for this monitor and all of the dimensions/specs will be there. Thanks for the watch, cheers!
@@wayofthewrench É "fácil" fazer essa sincronização com o monitor principal? Ou torna-se complexo? Obrigado. Abraço
It isn't too hard, just follow the video and type out the exact commands. It is a bunch of work/time but the end result is well worth it.....it blows old arcade cabinets out of the water!
@@wayofthewrench Very good then. I will try to design mine for that. Thanks. Hug
At 13:55 what kind of screen is that great choice.
The digital marquee is a 29" ultrawide monitor by LG. Decently priced at $275 CAN too. It seriously has been the best thing on this cabinet.
LOVING this project, my wife just agreed that we need one of these (as long as she gets Space Invaders!) I have to go back and like the previous videos I've been so distracted by this I forgot to. I'm curious about the speaker system, a bluetooth stereo when the machine is sitting idle or in showcase mode or something would be a great bonus. Is it hard to hook up to do both music and game sound?
This is one of the most informative series I've seen on building a cabinet. The shop tools looked like they were coming in handy! I've only got hand tools but I've got patience! Also have a 32" TV sitting in the garage doing nothing.. seems like a sign to me!
Thanks dude! Sounds like you have a cool wife, maybe get her involved in the design and then your budget can be bigger...lol. Maybe a custom space invader theme? Yes the bluetooth stereo is amazing and quickly becoming one of the best things on this cabinet! Super easy to use. Just pick up the phone and put on some music and adjust phone volume. With the volume knob on the cabinet, you increase how loud the video game and music volume is and your phone only adjusts the music volume. I have already had some chill nights just playing games and listening to tunes. Best money spent! Yeah if you have a 32" that's perfect, just make sure its not a plasma or you'll get some crazy burn in. Also if it's really old or on its way out, you may wanna spend some coin on a new smart tv. If mine kicks the bucket, I'm going to put a smart tv in so it can stream Netflix and internet too. They are about $200 CAN. Thanks for the awesome comment and good luck with your build!
@@wayofthewrench the tv is lcd so that's ok, I'll build it removable and if it ever craps out I'll just grab a new offbrand one at the superstore.
As for the theme we are both huge fans of Ready Player One so I think that will be the theme, I already 3d printed the 3 keys to build into the cab somehow. I wanted to push for a Star Wars theme but since I just hung a lifesize Han Solo in Carbonite on the wall, I figure I shouldn't push my luck.
Cool, I like the idea for a Ready Player One cab. Maybe design in a few secret compartments on it so it has "Easter Eggs" to find....lol
excellent video brother. wish you could sell the cnc plans to cut the piece for the controls or at least the printable drawing that could be traced to the MDF
Thanks bruh! 2 great ideas but they both have their challenges. First one is a cnc router that can accommodate a 4' X 8' sheet is really expensive and a lot of people don't have it or access to one for the cost. That would be cool though. The other is a full size print would be crazy expensive to get and send people. Honestly, it was pretty easy to layout and cut with a jigsaw. You just need a long straight edge and a tape measure. I will keep these suggestions in mind though for future bartop cabinets and visual pinball cabinets that I am planning on doing. Thanks for the watch and the suggestions. Cheers!
@@wayofthewrench thank you for responding to my comment. I was referring to scale plans that can be printed with a plotter, which than can be trace to the mdf ( specially the controls section , which is separate from the main cabinet ) - most fedex/ups can do it. I can't wait to see what else you have for us.
I'll keep that in mind for future builds. Thanks.
Nice video!
Do you actually have a recommendation for a 32" TV or monitor for arcade emulation? (mame to recent) I can't find much info on the subject.
My first recommendation is find a free one that is in good condition. If you ask you friends and family, I bet someone has one sitting in the house gathering dust because they upgraded to a 52" at Xmas or something. Literally they are a dime a dozen. Craigslist, Facebook marketplace, Kijiji, etc. Make sure it has HDMI so it is easy to hook up to a raspberry pi.
If I was to buy a replacement for my used 32" I would find a computer monitor probably LG (big fan of their products) and I saw one at Costco last week that was $200. DO NOT BUY a plasma tv/monitor as the video games (especially the bezel overlays or non changing game level aspects will burn an image into the screen. Good luck on your build and let me know if you have any more questions. Cheers
@@wayofthewrench Thank you for the reply. So resolution / refresh time.... don't matter that much for emulation?
I know that there are people out there that are purists and would laugh at me for not using an older crt monitor but I wasn't going for that. Plus those older tvs had such small displays (14-17 inch). You can always add scan lines and shaders with retropie later if that is what you are wanting. Now free tvs...you can't really complain about what your getting but even those tvs are generally better and bigger than what the games were originally played on so the refresh rates and resolution is usually easy to downgrade to what it originally was.
The problem will be that if you make it the original display size you will have empty black bars on the sides of the tv because your tv is bigger or different resolution than what it was. 2 solutions to this. First off you can just set each game to the resolution you want. Some games actually look better and some games don't look right and you can change them individually. The second option is to add bezel overlays that will add the original artwork around the correct resolution/display size for each game. Personally, most games look really nice on my 50 " tv at home with a stretched display setting so the entire screen is filled and on my cabinet, it is going to have the bezel overlays. I also was using Recalbox before and they had a smoothing setting you could add to games and it really improved how chunky the pixels looked.
Beyond that I am not 100% sure if your are buying some ultra high end 4k gaming computer monitor that it will actually look better or play smoother, etc. Probably not for the reasons above. The LG 29" ultrawide monitor I am using for the digital marquee is a really nice monitor (for a wider marquee monitor that is) and isn't crazy expensive either.
@@wayofthewrench Oh yeah I'm not a CRT purist either, especially since I plan to play recent arcade games as well anyway. In fact I've been looking at nice digital overlays for 4:3 games. I've actually been thinking of getting 16:10 30" monitor but the cabinet I'm getting seems to take 32" monitors so I'm not sure that it would work.
@@Konuvis If your getting a cabinet made and it is specifying a 32" monitor than your going to have to get a 32". The cut out for the screen will be for a specific size. Good luck with your build, I'd love to see it when your done!
looks so beautiful, nice work
Thanks Bruh! I kinda miss that raw MDF look of the cabinet when I look back. Had fun playing Galaga on it last night! Thanks for the watch!
Most of the people don't have the tools out there to make nice arcades..
In order to make a cabinet you need a jigsaw (straight & curved cuts) and a drill (holes for screws and the buttons/joysticks). That's it. Everything else just makes it easier and quicker. Thanks for the watch!
@Way of the Wrench while you're at it..have you thought about building a pinball machine with 2 monitors, running vpx with puppacks?
Way ahead of you....check my virtual pinball cabinet playlist. I'm building a 3 monitor cabinet, running vpx/future/fx and pup packs.
Awesome job👍🏾
Thank you! Cheers!
I'm interested in the raspbery pibset up for an additional monitor. For example the terminal and of course the marquee screen.
I have finally worked out the marquee setup and I promise I will share my process through some videos....stay tuned.
The marquee screen is a 29" LG ultrawide monitor and the tv is a 32 inch samsung lcd. The main game playing retropie is on a 3b plus and the digital marquee is running from a raspberry pi zero W. The two pis talk/listen to each other with a simple server/client program. More detailed info for everyone to make this coming soon...
I didn't think the pi could do the digi marquee, I'll be keeping my out for the next video
Yeah it sure does, I already have it working on my 2 pis, just gotta install into the cabinet. Tutorial videos and coding to be in a video soon.
@@wayofthewrench niiice 😎
Great stuff man!!
Thanks, I had a lot of fun making my own cabinet. If you haven't made one yet, you should.....so good to play the classics on something you made!
Thank you so much for the free plans :)!!!
No worries, if you make my design I would love to see some pics or a video! Thanks for the watch!
@@wayofthewrench I have the parts I need to find time to do it though I'll 100% send some pictures
yeah it's a big project, just take your time and it'll turn out awesome.
@@wayofthewrench thank you so much you have inspired me
Sweet! Glad I was able to get ya excited enough to make your own custom arcade cabinet. I look forward to seeing your build!
That's great. I love your second display!
Thanks dude! Yeah it really is one of the coolest features on this cabinet....soooo many options for cool customization.
Nice job! Going to your link above, after smashing like many times :) did not show the PDF. Was wondering if the PDF document is still available?
Thanks John! Nothings has changed and link is good, just checked. Here it is again.

Just click on arcade plan text and it will start the download, if it doesn't then check browser stuff like pop up not blocked, etc.
Thanks for the smashed likes...lol. If you make my design, I'd love to see it when your done!
@@wayofthewrench Thanks that worked perfectly! Love your build, again great job!
Sweet, now go make that cabinet so you can join the WOTW cabinet family!
my kids love your 32''cabinet do you make empty frames so I can put one together for them I have a 32'' VIZIO TV
That's awesome, I'm glad they like my design. At this time, I am not making cabinets or parts for customers. Just trying to inspire and help people design and make their own cabinets. Please feel free to use my plans, the link is in the description. Remember, you could always just make the control panel and just use your 32" tv on a wall. Good luck and I would like to see your cabinet when you are done. I'll let you know if I decide to make cabinets for people in the future. If I do, it would probably be bar top smaller versions.
Are you making cabinets for sale yet lol
Are you selling empty cabinets yet lol
I got no time....too busy editing/filming/teaching but I've been itching to start a bar top cabinet. You should seriously try to make your own. Take your time and it will be soooo worth it. Let me know if you have any questions that I can help you with for getting started.
Wow I would love to try and make one of these for myself.
Do it! You won't regret it as it is a very fun and rewarding diy project plus you get to play it when your done. If you make one, I'd love to see it when your done. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. Cheers!
What's the total depth of this cabinet with control panel installed? By my measurements off your plans it looks like 40". Love the design but it looks really massive. Wondering whether control panel can be made shorter
Yup 41" deep on my plans and it is amazing to play on. Could you make it less? Yup go for it but on a 32" tv, it is going to be pretty close to the tv. I didn't design the cabinet with size in mind, pure looks and what I wanted to see and to give myself some space away from the 32". Thanks for the watch!
