You may keep Smallmouth Bass up to limits stated in the BC Fishing Regulations. Let them go if they are tagged! Those fellas are used for research purposes to understand the effect they have on the Cultus Lake ecosystem.
Oh BTW, are we required to keep all smallmouth caught?
Retention is 20. You may hook into a fish that is tagged, you should let it go because it's used to monitor the migration pattern at Cultus Lake. Those tags are expensive and shouldn't be wasted. Here is my reference:
www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/sports-recreation-arts-and-culture/outdoor-recreation/fishing-and-hunting/freshwater-fishing/region_2_cultus_lake_bass_june_2020_update.pdf
Used to be 20 now in region 2 is a limit of 4
@@michaelfarrow6718 The 2019-2021 regulations still state 20 for region 2. www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/sports-recreation-arts-and-culture/outdoor-recreation/fishing-and-hunting/freshwater-fishing/fishing_synopsis.pdf
Also, the most current notice for Cultus Lake Smallmouth still indicate that you should follow the Freshwater Fishing Regulations Synopsis, the link I posted above. www2.gov.bc.ca/assets/gov/sports-recreation-arts-and-culture/outdoor-recreation/fishing-and-hunting/freshwater-fishing/region_2_cultus_lake_bass_june_2020_update.pdf
I believe that the small mouth in cultures are entirely invasive and should always be kept when caught with no limit
Incorrect, you by bc law are not allowed to waste fish that are not eaten. I catch and release them . Many folks will not kill them.
curious how many salmon smolts are in the pikeminnow bellys..
Cool tip for fishing a popper with a spinning Rod .... Tighten the drag down tighter than usual for the initial strike and loosen after you've set the hook 👍
Are treble hooks allowed ?
What a sweet rise and attack by the smally! Then awesome quick follow-up casting 👍
Thanks!
Nice content man, it was a pleasure meeting you at that spot in Chilliwack by the river ...I was the guy that caught 10 pikeminnows that day.
Try using a jerk bait. The 2 that have been the most productive for me have been the Megabass Vision 110 and the Lucky Craft Pointer SP. Both have shallow to deep diving models, so you can cover a large water column (5' to 15'). They have a wide variety of colors so your best option is to try and match the bait fish that the bass are feeding on. In the spring, summer, fall when smallies tend to hit topwater baits try using a swim bait. My favorites are the Sebille Magic Swimmer 125 slow sink and the Mike Bucca Bull Shad; again match the colors to the fish the bass are feeding on. When bass are feeding up in the water column both these baits have been magic for me. Tight lines🤙
I haven't caught any smallmouth there yet but tons of pikeminnow. It definitely doesn't take long to kayak the perimeter i did the full round trip this past summer and look forward to doing it again. Especially knowing top water works there lol. Great video
Amazing video man new to the channel from the province next door from ya never caught a bass before but I'm hoping to go to that lake this summer!!🤞🤞🤞
Hi Ryan, thanks for sharing. I am looking to purchase an inflatable kayak for fishing and crabbing. Would you recommend an entry level inflatable kayak under $500? Cheers.
great vid, hope to see more in the future. I'm a local and fish the lake as well
Hey Hookset! Miss you guys! Any new content coming out or have you all taken a sabbatical?
Funny enough I went out there today and caught a 1lb and half there on a wacky rig, a lot where bitting
Awesome, congrats!
Good to see you on Hooks and Hammocks live stream. You got a new sub! Nice smallie
Doesn’t Cultus lake feed into the Chilliwack , Vedder rivers ? If so what is stopping this fish from spreading into those systems ?
Good I give you props for catching a freaking pikeminnow on purple I haven't caught one yet on a Popple
Got me by surprise too!
is there any big mouth bass? which side were you fishing? NSEW?
I’m gonna go fishing at cultas next week, if I catch small mouth can I keep them to cook them or no ? I don’t really understand the situation there.
Funny enough, I'm heading out there today. I guess I know what to use now, so thanks. I'm thinking a ned rigged craw imitation
I also have the exact same popper you used but in 1/2 oz for my casting setup
They're in the mood to chase!
What popper where you using around the 10 min mark?
Subscribed! I want to give Cultus a try. Recommended lure (spinner or spoon) for shore fishing?
Have you gone fishing here yet? If so what do you recommend
Hey what length of ultralight rod were you using?
Try a Wacky rigged worm - no weight. Give the bass a bit longer before " hookset" lol.
You're so punny!
@@HooksetBC Bass what I thought! (kill me now)
dont let it die like that ur supposed to knock it out u jerkbait:(
What is the best size rod to use for smallmouth ? Is a 6.6 medium fast action a good size spinning rod to use
6’6 will work just fine, usually a longer rod will help you get a farther cast but as long as it’s not a heavy weight rod you’ll be fine!
Good job! Still got zero catch in BC. I am the bad fisherman...
You just need to give it another shot, that's all. Do your best!
Hookset lake winnock, dear, rice, Pitt Meadows... lol anyways, it's good to see your catches! Hopefully I can recognize you on the lake some day
Smallmouth this time of year tend to commit more to striking a lure that is traveling faster. They have less time to analyze what they are hitting.
Time to revise the arsenal!
dont lip trout bc they dont have spines and it killes them
Just to let you know next time u catch a pike keep it and kill it because they’re also invasive
Hi friends, I am searching for a twitching jig, almost whole black silhouette and a small flashy blade at the tail, around 10-15 gr 3/8 to 1/2 oz. 7cm long, 3 inches. any idea? brand name, tackle store maybe around metro Vancouver Abbotsford? thanks so much in advance.
Fred's Tackle in Chilliwack or Abbotsford are probably the best places to find really specific setups like that. I mostly create my own by combing things that are sold separately
@@adventureswithbear Thanks so much Jeff, I will check Fred's Tackle. Best wishes
It doesn’t make sense, if bass are invasive, then why is there a limit?
Summer?
This is in cultus lake bc?
Are you using weight on your line
how well are crankbaits working right now?
The few guys I know who are fishing cranks are hauling a good amount in. Definitely worth your time to invest in some cranks!
Hookset great thanks for the response!
Do you have to keep the bass because it is invasive
The official DFO site says we shouldn't return it to the water if you think it's invasive. It is invasive, there is a limit of 20. But if there is a tagged fish you catch, please return it to the water. Biologists are using those tagged fish to study migration of Cultus Lake Smallmouth.
Here is my reference: www.dfo-mpo.gc.ca/species-especes/profiles-profils/smallmouthbass-achiganpetitebouche-eng.html
Can you make a catch and cook video
And also can you make a video of fishing for multi species at Deer lake burnaby
@@silascheng6004 Sure.
You are not required to kill bass The regulations are clear you can not waste your catch.
If you can that's killof are you going to do to them make them bigger I am not lying
Maybe there will be a trophy fish there one day?
Cultus will be an amazing bass lake in 2025
Give more pauses in your retrieve.
btw not trying to be mean
Nope, it’s super understandable. Good to know someone is caring about the fish. But, there wasn’t any trout caught in the video. Only smallmouth bass which is invasive and cannot be released or Northern Pikeminnow which has an annual derby to remove a percentage of population. You can lip a Northern Pikeminnow.
Was confirmed by BC wildlife you are not required to kill bass in cultus.
