What he is not telling you - he is using "Remodeling Couplings" ( couplings with no stops ). These couplings can slide up and down the pipe. Great for repairs like her, where you have no luxury of moving pipes apart. Not every store sells these and you have to look really carefully to see them if they are in stock as they look like regular coupling. Just thought I may mention this to save "you" extra trip to Home Depot. Thank You
You don't put the solder into the flame of the torch!!! You need to let the temperature of the pipe reach the point to melt the solder, otherwise, you will have a cold joint and it will leak!!! This is a very poor demonstration on soldering !!!

Doesn't look like he torched the solder directly. Sure it was close by but the quicker solder can be applied like how he trail the torch briefly especially with vertical applications that little bit of solder helps by cooling enough to support the connection and its not like an iron skillet the copper can cool quickly i learned that the hard way and made anyone witnessed first soldering diys sign confidentiality agreements negotiated by my loud partner Dan Wesson, and i still suck at soldering.
