Never gets old listening to retired railroaders talk about their time on the job. That's when one learns about the railroad's life/history that won't be found in any shareholders' report, employee timetable, or newspaper article. Thanks for putting this out, Mr. Walsh. Best part, though: finally got to hear Larissa!
I really enjoyed listening to these two old railroaders talk operations. As to the clip at the end, don't forget that "Von Ryan's Express" also had scenes inside a couple of Italian Switch Towers (boxes?), including one where they smash the model board (complete with Roman Numerals on the diagram!) with a chair. Wonder if maybe that was an out-of-service office that was trashed for the movie?
Hello Chuck my name is Robin from Ontario 🇨🇦 I’ve watched all the videos on the cut off and it’s so sad that this line was a abandoned I hate too see that happening .and you are doing a fantastic job with the info .DL&W so much History l am Learning so much about it . Hopefully soon they will get to Scranton someday with Amtrak or NJ trains well Done Cheers to ya 👍🏻
🤣 Right off the bat.. That Dereco they were up to no good !! A lot of folks who worked on the EL would second that statement. I sure heard a good share of comments from guys I worked with years ago. None had anything good to say about that N&W run outfit.
I'm not convinced that they are the same phenomenon. Ball lightning is different than what is described by Artie and Gerry. Yes, there are similarities, I'll agree on that point, but there are substantial differences, particularly since ball lightning tends to randomly appear in different places, whereas this orb near Port Morris Wye--and the Hookerman near Naughtright--have appeared in the same exact location for decades.
I had thought the infrastructure bill that was signed contained no money for the cutoff. Maybe I'm wrong , but heard it was mainly for roads and the airline industry. I personally really don't think the train will ever go past Andover.
Money is definitely allocated to Amtrak. And Amtrak has tangible plans to run to Scranton in the future. NBC did a piece about this last summer with Chuck as well as the CEO of Amtrak (see Chuck's video). I think there will be passenger trains on the Cutoff in our lifetime. Of course, priorities can quickly change. But Rt. 80 is getting worse and worse every year.....
1:58:24 Yes, well, you never would have bumped into Artie because you were both on the extra list. The only opportunity for interacting would be if you both were called in for back-to-back posting. First trick out, Gerry, second trick out, Artie.
About the "lights". Did they appear in any weather. Clear, rain, snow? Did they appear in any season? Were they always situated between the tracks? Different solar events can alter earths magnetosphere. Two evenly separated iron rails would be a good channel for magnetic or electric flux's. My money is on the magnetosphere.
We're talking almost a half-century ago. You heard the description from Artie and Gerry. A yellow, incandescent orb at night that was mostly stationary but would move at track level from time to time. It would have been interesting if someone had walked down there or, even better, gotten a photo of it. But they didn't. But the phenomenon sounds very similar to the so-called Hookerman Lights at Naughtright on the CNJRR High Bridge Branch, which are also mentioned in the interview.
About strange things on the cutoff, I experienced what I think was a paranormal sighting near the service road outside of Roseville Tunnel if you're interested...

Yes, that's a first.
Can't tell you how much I love this !!!!
Thank you!
Thank you as always chuck. hopefully see the viaducts getting used again what a scenic ride that would be.

Excellent interview
Great interview! Every video release we get closer to the cutoff finally getting rebuilt!

Intriguing interview. Thank you.

Good point. However, I don't recall Von Ryan's Express actually showing the physical operation of switches from the tower.
@@LackawannaCutOff You're correct on that, but they were watching the train progress on the model board.
@@B-and-O-Operator-Fairmont, it's been a while since I've seen the film, but that sounds correct.
Great Interview! I enjoy the entire series!
just a wonderful and insightful interview...very much enjoyed..thank you chuck again for all of these videos..

Fascinating interview and a pleasure to listen to. Thank you, Chuck.

On the Hookerman lights: look up ball lightning, I suppose it must be the same thing.

53:00 And of course there is the high-speed CSX runaway that inspired the movie Unstoppable.
1:40:43 There are rumors that some steam trains hit 100 on the Cut-Off, even though the speed limit was less than that.
I had thought the infrastructure bill that was signed contained no money for the cutoff. Maybe I'm wrong , but heard it was mainly for roads and the airline industry. I personally really don't think the train will ever go past Andover.
The funds go to Amtrak, but not specifically for the Cut-Off. Stay tuned.

They would have been leaving their post if they went down to investigate, probably grounds for termination.

@@Construction_King, yes, I would be interested. Please IM me on Facebook or text me at 908-798-0703.
I wish you would let them answer before you cut them off with a new question.
Thank you for your feedback.
