As a fellow adhd bassist i really needed to hear this! I get so filled with guilt that im not practicing as much as i used to and then the pressure builds and i dont practice at all. I think i could quite easily practise an hour a day consistently without any guilt
Really interesting perspective on the amount of practice hours!! It pretty much sums up everything how I feel about practicing many hours a day. I just got accepted at a really good music college (as a drummer) here in Germany and my professor says that more than 3h a day are the minimum for developing your musicianship to professional levels. As much as I understand and agree with him (I do in fact make great progress if I practice that much), I fear that I won't be able to hold the discipline to practice that much all semester long, solely because I have a great fear of missing out from valuable experiences outside of the shed. And, well, then you read about Tony Williams and how he allegedly spent 10h behind the kit from age 11 - 19... Great video :)
Hey, congrats on getting accepted! If you can do 3h a day then that's great, but I tend to agree with the fact that you'll miss out on valuable experiences and relationships outside of the shed. Tony may have practiced 10 hours a day ... but his bandmate Herbie Hancock only practiced 1 hour a day his whole life (according to his autobiography), haha. Good luck with school and everything, and thank you for watching!
I definitely needed to hear this as I’m guilty of practicing too much at the expense of networking and playing with folks. Always felt I should/could get a little better before venturing out. I now know what you say is true, opportunities will improve one the most, playing with other musicians in a band situation. Thx.
Love this video. I'm a new player and I've been stressing about how much time I need to put in to see some measurable progress. I'll keep this in mind so I don't get lost in the woods.
Interesting points Cole. But wouldn't you say that that extraordinary amount of practice you did in your earlier years is what allowed you to be this exceptional at a relatively young age? Would you say you could have achieved the same level of musicianship by just practicing 2 hours a day, but practicing in a smarter, more efficient way?
I think that is exactly what he meant, but if you put that into perspective, a teenager does not have the maturity or patience to accept that he will acquire the skill with time. I used to organize my practice sessions very well and could do 6 hours many times, but i practiced too many different things (music school obliged) i realise that if i focused on only 3 things every three months i would have gotten a much longer way.
Hey Ivo, thank you - I appreciate you saying that. I would say I definitely could have achieved that same level if I only did 2 hours a day. As much as practicing can make you better, the thing that really makes you better is opportunity. If you're practicing 6 hours a day, you're closing yourself off to opportunity because of the sheer amount of time you're spending in a practice room. If you do 2 hours a day (or less) and spend the rest of the time networking and building relationships, you will get much better than if you just did 6 hours a day. I regret it now but hey, you live and you learn lol.
Thanks for this video Cole, I'm going to start doing this today, in 3 months I will come back here and say how it went. You know what would be amazing? You make a live video (posting it after it got recorded) of one of your 1 or 2 hours practice sessions as it is, naturally, so we can see how a world class musician like you are practice! Abraço daqui do Brazil!
Great advice. I always tell my students that focused practice is perfect practice. I’m interested in finding out your approach to working on intonation. What do you find to be the most effective way of working on intonation? Again, great video. Really enjoyed it.
Thank you! And I think I should do a video on intonation next week because a lot of people ask me about it! That's a good topic for a video ... coming soon :)
Hey! Honestly I've dealt with it by doing 45 minute intervals in practicing. As in, I'll do 45 minutes, then take a break, then do another 45 minutes etc. I don't know if there are aspects of it that have helped me, but maybe there are!
Excellent! Just what I needed. But there's something I don't get: 3 things x 20 minutes = 1 hour. Yet you recommend 2 hours. So can it be 3 x 40' instead? or 2 x [3 x 20']?

I love the simplicity of this recommendataion. Thanks, Cole!

Thank you for watching and for the kind words! That’s a great idea … I think I will do that!

@@coledavismusic looking forward to seeing it.
I also have ADD. It’s tough to deal with! In what ways have you dealt with it? Are there aspects of ADD that have helped you?

Honestly either is great - I also recommend doing 1 hour! 3 x 40 is also great :)
@@coledavismusic Merci beaucoup!
