      The Tor firing looks really cool 😎. I don't like the Strela because it is low cost and effective enough. Can Ukraine use the crv7 mighty mouse rocket motors to make ammo for these? There is a guided crv7 variant, so missle it already is? Good Luck on the channel getting more engagement, I recommend looking for a comment in your "youtube data" in options, the comment that might get a robot-referee angry and delete it, if it exists. ❤

    The radar on Strela-10 is there just to determine range to target. It is 100% ranging radar, can not track the target and you don't have to use it if the target is at visual range. Also, Strela-10 can also use older missiles from Strela-1. Recommended ratio is 50-50; 2 Strela-10 and 2 Strela-1 missiles where older ones are used for less sophisticated targets which makes the system even more cost effective.
    In Soviet/Russian doctrine, you don't have to shoot down an aircraft in order to complete the mission; if the object you are defending is still standing after an airstrike or can be repaired, that's mission accomplished. Shooting down a plane is just more than welcome bonus. And knowing this thing is around (it's passive seeker so pilot doesn't get a warning after the launch) is enough to make any pilot nervous.

    • @KorbenDalasCZ
      @KorbenDalasCZ 3 дня назад +8

      we never turned on the radar for practice. It's unnecessary, it's only there for the purposes of issuing a target-zone signal. Once a colleague turned it on during an exercise and aimed at a pair of L-159s, the planes did a disruption and circled for several minutes looking for the source that targeted them, meanwhile the colleague aimed them several times and simulated shooting, the planes never found him.

      Not me. I was in the Rhodesian security forces during the bush war when in the late 1970’s ZIPRA brought down two Vickers Viscount passenger aircraft with Strela manpads. On the first shoot down, the aircraft crash landed with survivors. A couple of hours later the terrorists arrived at the crash site and ‘unalived’ the civilian men and women survivors.
      During this time I was a pilot.
      The second aircraft shot down had no survivors.

    I think that little "whiz" sound is the gyro spinning up. I could be wrong, but that is process used on older gyro stabilized missiles and torpedoes where a compressed gas spins up the gyro right before launch.

    Great video, thanks!
    However, I have to bring a few corrections:
    1. 3:50 Main seeker mode is photocontrast, not IR. It seeks for light objects on a dark background or vice versa.
    2. M3 version is actually capable to use all 9M333's features, such as following and requisition of vanished (behind clouds, for example) targets. Also, M3 has 1,8/3,75x variable zoom instead of flat 2,8 of earlier models
    3. 5:58 Just NO. The "radar" part of S-10 (called "zone assessment device") hasn't changed through modifications at all. It calculates launch parameters based on target's kinematic properties, doesn't affect missile's locking on targets and not necessary for using (quite detrimental with modern RWRs and signals intel systems).
    8:56 It houses only 4 (four) missiles inside, your sources are... questionable
    P.S. That №621 vehicle is from unit where I served, glad to see it 😊

      Thank you. I'm really interested in this and similar systems. Could you please explain how the Strela-10 crew discover the target so they can engage it? Do they get the info from external radars from the command post if the system has the capability to connect with or they rely on visually spotting the target?

    • @asellusaustralis261
      @asellusaustralis261 20 часов назад

      @matovicmmilan the main mean to engage a target is visual contact. The missile needs the same visual contact to lock on the target, so it makes sense. Also, each divizion (not to be confused with division) has PU-12M and PPRU command vehicles. PPRU has its own radar, it can transfer target data to PU-12M, and then PU-12 can share target azimuths to S-10 (M2 or M3) through APRTsU datalink.
      It was the original way to do that, nowadays it's problematic. That radio datalink is easily detectable and jammable by modern means of electronic warfare, radar is also obsolete. So S-10 crews rely on external sources of reconnaissance

    THAT whistling sound when fired is caused by a gas generator that spins the gyroscope at the back of the rocket. The 9M37M missile has a dual IR and photocontrast guidance system, the operator can turn on protection against flare interference before firing. This protection is then automatically turned on when the projectile is fired. maximum speed 2M average speed 1.5M. The speed of the target can be 425m/s on arrival and 330m/s on departure. The warhead is incredibly sensitive and accurate in guidance, although it sometimes happened if the target was at the dawn of a cloud that was irradiated by the sun that the missile caught the cloud boundary and lost the target, but in 10 years of service I have only seen it twice and it was the operator's fault who misjudged target capture.

    It seems they are not built anymore , and wonderfully adaptable to any purpose, so they
    are used a lot . Forestry/fire fighting , even Siberian traffic cops use them in winter, then add 2-dozen , or more and growing, military versions.
    Very thin armor means they are destroyed easily. Footage is out there , and hard to believe
    how they end up in such small pieces when ammo & fuel goes off.. I got nuthin' on the Strela , but I do like the looks of the MT-LB. -TY for the post on the system.

    And yes, looking at the longevity of this system, Strela was indeed an emblem to the AA systems for decades... The system is one of the main reasons, along the Patriot, why the russians brought FABs to the game. I even consider the Strela more dangerous, for its stealth and ambushing capability, reaction time ( a lot faster than Patriot) simplicity to operate and (very) low cost.

    Strela is very old yet extremly effective little machine maybe best machine for war in Ukrajine cuz its cheaper than other AA systems like Tunguska or Thor and well igla cant match the power of strela its really impressive wehicle. Sometimes simplicity is better than high tech.

    Normally there should be 4 of these (alongside 4 2S6 Tunguska) in every motor rifle and tank regiment in the Russian army, or 6 of each in every brigade. Some 460 units are in service in Russia alone.

    i love the system, but a missile for drones, better using a cannon like Italian guided shells, they took down drones over 5 km distance, without needs for expensive missiles. but like you said, better as being hit!

    Considering that Strela-10 has received a heat direction finder and new rockets with a multispectral seeker, it is too early for her to retire.
    What does it really (well, roughly) look like to launch an Arrow-10 at a low-flying fighter-type target:

    The West needs to review its anti-aircraft vehicles to include:
    - PATRIOT on a platform similar to the BUK.
    - Reissue the 35mm GEPARD for C-UAS and C-RAM functions (something that I think is very neglected)
    - The 76mm and 127mm naval guns are options that need to be evaluated.

    • @thegloriousretardmagnet4257
      @thegloriousretardmagnet4257 3 дня назад

      The Gernans already use the Patriot truck mounted. Not exactly like a Buk but still much faster and easier to set up.
      The Skyranger 30 is already beeing procured as a Gepard replacement
      The oto melara 76mm is already used as anti-air and missile defense on most large ships that use it.

    • @piotrd.4850
      @piotrd.4850 3 дня назад +1

      West needs: 1. single 35mm gun with programmable ammo and MANPADs on one plaform 2. 76mm with DART ammo in land applications 3. CAMM-ER on Buk like Chassis. 4. this new brithsh laser.

    • @arbelico2
      @arbelico2 3 дня назад

      @@piotrd.4850 Greetings, the CAMM-ER is a good missile, but the idea is to have anti-aircraft/ballistic defense on a mobile platform for the first line and, if necessary, to be able to use the SM-2 and SM-6.
      I prefer to reissue the GEPARD with two 35mm cannons with AHEAD ammunition and SkyKnight missiles.
      The 76mm must be used not only with DART ammunition, but also with the entire HE, Frag, and VULCANO range (for counterbattery fire).
      The UK Laser has already been used in Yemen and, as far as I know, with success.

    Actually M it appears that the Strela is using a small radar to acquire the target before launching this IR missile therefore it isn't a stealth system because aircraft are equipped with radar warning receivers.

    Problem with Strela as primary solution in shooting down drones is that, while they are cheaper than BUK, S-300, TOR, Pantsir, it's not cost effective compare to much cheaper anti-drone solution. Which is, as you might have guess it, drones designed to shoot down drones.

      It's a ranging radar. It helps give exact targeting information at the outer edges of the system's range where it might be hard to get a good visual bearing. Evidently it's not normally used in practice though.
