We went testing for World Cup Finals with Leroy and Mullet and safe to say I was on a destructive path when we had to stop. Mullet had multiple issues that lead to a locked up engine and Leroy nearly had a catastrophic explosion. Glad we made it out ok!

That tranny might have blown if those gears weren't soaked in oil I know you can set one down in a puddle of it and it'll suck it all up in less than a day or so so if your transmission shop build your transmission faster than 24 hours and they might not have soaked all the gears because they didn't have enough time or we're trying to beat a deadline you can't beat a deadline when it takes 48 hours for a gear to suck up its oil....... oh yeah and I hate my life where's the link to that trackhawk?

Calculating rpm of a money shift is pretty easy but definitely give props to Sam for knowing his math. If you know what your mph are in a specific gear and also know what gear you money shifted to as well as knowing intimate details of the car like tire size, gear ratios etc you can make a quick guess like that.

Mullet has grenaded a lot of expensive engines so the worry is understandable. Seems like with Cleetus engines either last forever or blow up almost immediately.

It is actually such a strange phenomenon. Over the years I have become so attached to Leroy and Mullet (and Ruby) and get excited when I see them line up at the tree and so scared when I see the titles of the videos.

In my 34 years there's only been 2 guys I literally cross my fingers for. Not just saying it, actually hold my fingers crossed.
My favorite driver in F1 and Cleetus, when he goes for a full commitment rip. Of course I fully support my national driver in WRC and hope he does well, but still there isn't that magic that makes me cross my fingers.
Watching Mullet drop a few inches in height as you let off really puts into perspective how hard that thing is trying to pull to the moon.

How do you money shift an engine making that much power and do NO damage to the engine??? Gotta give a shoutout to Pete for building this engine as Cleeter proofed as he could because the fact that it went for another run instead of being pushed back to the garage is a true testament of strength imho
I think the strain gauge saved it, he realized what happened before he let go of the knob and started pushing it back out of gear so the spark was completely off the whole time. He's flat shifting so without that ignition cut he would have put full power through it and it would have yeeted a rod before he even knew what happened. It dragged the rpm up but it was just inertia spinning the crank which isn't nearly as hard on it.
Not ideal and they should probably pull the heads off and check the push rods but at least the block doesn't have any new ventilation holes 😅
@@Joebobinator The spark isn't completely off! He even showed and explained how it worked at the trailer. Yes, power is reduced when there is pressure on the shifter.
@@CGT80 He said it dragged the rpm up but that's just the wheels turning the motor through the trans. If the ignition was on it wouldn't have clean revved like it did, it would have been popping and banging and shooting fireballs like it was bouncing off a rev limiter or 2-step.

I could swear he said retard.......He must have reshot that scene after to make me a liar. 😁 I must have been thinking of traction control.....they reduce the power by retarding it but still keep it running. That is still very hard on the engine, based on the Steve Morris video he recently did on hitting a rev limiter. He mentioned that pro mod guys tear down the engine after that because it causes failure so often in following runs. I don't know if pushing an LS like they are puts them in a similar situation. If I recall correctly, it cuts the ignition and takes away the cushion of the mixture igniting. He mentioned the exhaust stroke being the most strain since the piston doesn't have anything to resist the force when it goes up. The Leroy engine was built for high rpm, luckily, but I would agree with Cleetus that he might not get away with doing that too many times.
@@Joebobinator It also had hit the rev limiter as well so that's pulling power out of the motor as well. Let's just say that what saved the motor is all the safeties built into the motor to do EXACTLY what they did. Save the motor.
I love how highly he speaks of the companies he works with. I've never heard him say a bad thing about one. Even if their part didn't work with the setup, he never knocks them.
Pete gonna be at World Cup too? I’m a big fan of the Cleet and Pete driver/tuner combo. Plus I like seeing Pete get all uncomfortable when they get rowdy and goody.

An anti bounce, delay, and duration of cut timers can help on the strain gauge to position the cut out where it needs to be based on an rpm table at shift point. You can do it with a single timer but it may be easier to not get wrong with individual timers.
Creating a datalog to see what's happening to rpm during each shift can be interesting if you can see fine enough resolution to show shift effect details.

My heart dropped when mullet wouldnt turn over. I was heart broken and when they showed the mat i was jumping with joy. Then leroy losing 2nd gear im all depressed again. I have high hopes leroy will be back in no time.

It might have already been mentioned in the comments, but I recently watched a Steve Morris video where he talks about strength of the rotating assembly, specifically stating that when an engine at this power level like that misses a shift/past the rev limiter etc, it’s basically time to freshen up the rods because of the stress they saw spinning 9700.
Bad luck the last few races... Hopefully y'all can get it sorted out!

Bonneville cars are built with aerodynamic wind efficiency in mind, Leroy is damn cool but aerodynamic is NOT one of them!

Someone should develop a transmission protection device to physicially prevent the driver from shifting down during a run. Could use solenoids to lock out each gear position as you shift up, then only release them again after cutting the engine. Obviously could be enabled/disabled for normal driving too. I could probably prototype something like that - could either work like that, just on locking out after shiting out of each gear, or for normal driving could lock the gears that are too low for the current speed to prevent over-revving.

A one-way ratchet that only lets the shifter move left to right unless you hold down a release. I think such a thing exists but it may not be legal for the stick shift classes he's running in.
They're a thing in the import world already, dragcartel do a "1st and 2nd gear lockout" that just bolts to the side of the shifter and drops a pin in the "gate" as you upshift, but I hear talk they might be banned or limited for competition and a lot of people think they go against the spirit of running a manual since they take away the risk of driver error, already we have slipper clutches and faceplated gears taking clutch control off the table.
I love leroy, mullet, mcflurry and all of them. But that dang blazer is my fav.
