This was my introduction to VOTOMs around the turn of the century. I saw the original Japanese version with no subtitles, but was still able to figure out what was going on for the most part.
The mecha design is absolutely top notch. The rollerblade-like skidding might seem weird at first, but it makes the battle much more action-packed. Part of me wonders if this "gliding over the ground" thing was also done to save on animation budget. Walking-cycles are time consuming to animate, so this does cut back on costs, that can then be used for awesome fighting scenes.
So the plan was always to have the ATs rollerblade as their main movement, but they were originally going to roll only in straight lines and stop at set distances. Then a lady on the animation team who was a fan of slalom suggested using that as inspiration instead. And so we have ATs' movement as we see it.
Reminds me of Starship Troopers in the book they use there jets to skate around on the ground for long distance travel rather than jumping constantly, though it was more a grinding since no wheels on the suits
The main tactical disadvantage to an AT is that it's a thinly-armored can full of liquid explodium which can, and *will,* detonate at the slightest provocation. Freaking death traps.
Whixh is a shame since they are some of the better thought out mecha out there. They are in the perfect size for actual proper usage, add in big gun tanks, Artillery Fire support with inflantry and you got yourself an extremely tough and flexible battle force.
Man, that was a cool fight. I remember playing this on the PSOne. It's called the Blue Knight Berserga Story. Might try playing it again using the PSOne emulator on my phone.
