As someone that love mage over all other classes I can say that 100% this is all the struggles of mage cranked up to 16
@@chip_the_fox3279 getting weps for one mage is no problem at all tho
@@Nen_niN yeee. It is a bit resource heavy compared to others sometimes (khm khm , early game khm khm) , but weapons themselves do rock quite hard.
But in ×16 you would need extreme coordination. And it still wouldnt help you in pre-hardmode , because most , if not all weapons need more or less finite resources (finite if you dont have time).
As a summoner main: I never thought I'd live to see the day that mage would be more pain in the early game than summoner.
I personally think summoner has had a better early game than mage for literal years
@@purplehaze2358 as a multiclass main: you guys struggle in early game???
Would've been hilariously chaotic if you guys got zapinators from the traveling merchant. It's alright when it's one player having a small chance of insane damage, but with 16??? Bosses will get MELTED or at the very least there'd be better cc
16 times the gambling 🤑🤑🤑🎰🎰🎰
i don't think mage is bad in single player but it is funny how the 16 player challenge seems almost perfectly designed to exacerbate the problems lol, like the 3 most weird things about it are being forced to collect fallen stars, relying more heavily on potions and having no easily accessible weapons, all of which are mostly irrelevant in single player but here it makes the game 10x worse. i think mage is due for a rework along with summoner, both classes feel pretty raw, janky and slightly weak compared to ranger and melee
he should do that same 16 mages challenge with calamity, in zenith seed. itd be so much "fun". (and thus, entertaining for us.)
I mean Melee also has issues the game is essentially just the Ranger game, half of the reason Melee gets by ever is because it has a bunch of weapons that are basically guns shaped like swords. Most of this really comes down to a combination of every enemy dealing contact damage + most bosses being flying blobs. Ranger is the only class in the game that feels like the game was properly designed around them, with the killer combo of consistently getting reliable ore-based weapons, being able to hit flying enemies, and not having to deal with everything and its mother dealing massive damage for touching it.
I think something like Don't Starve Together does a much better job in this department, as all of the enemies that hit you up close actually have melee attacks with animations, delays, different ranges, attack cooldowns, attack patterns, etc. I simply don't think the class system is salvagable within the bounds of Terraria 1, I think it is something Terraria 2 ought to strive toward instead.
Honestly , i agree , but not about a rewirk. How would you even go about it? Give max mana from start? Remove mana mechanic? Add more earlygame weapons , like a wooden staff? Ok , last option isnt that bad , but i ve played enough mods to see how it might suck big time for mage. Mage is most special for most of its weapons are unic and special , so adding something like a woden bow , or woden sword , would either go against design of the class , or make other classes look bad in comparison.
Option one: borring simple weapons to fill out the progression , to go alongside melee and ranged equivalents. That would take away from the unicness of mage that draws people in. And will slightly make mage better weapon-wise then other classes. I think.
Option two: make those simply crafted weapons unic and cool , on par with other mage items.
That would suck for everyone else , cause now mage is just more fun then others with no drawbacks.
Thing is: those problems mage has , are somewhat inherit to its design as a unic class with unic and diverse weaponry. Same with summoner.
There are no simple weapons for those two. And it is by design. barely any sold weapons , any found or made weapon , is a bit unic.
I see it as this at least.
Yea it sucks in ×16 , but lets be honest , game isnt balanced around making it possible to play with 16 of a same class. And it is ok , makes for a funner challenge.
But it is ridiculous , how melee , isnt really melee anymore , but still consumes nothing.
@@maskedkoopa6252 i think i agree , but not really. Especially in dst example. Dst is a game designed around melee , so melee doesnt suck there , but now ranged sucks there. (and it sucks big time, walter gameplay be like: "hold f" , seriously playing him just ain't fun.)
Allso mage cant have ore weapons by design.
It is designed around having a set of very unic weapons with unic play styles. Ore weapons are just too simple.
Its the reason i am forever mage main , and that one time i tryed playing as full-time ranger i just gave up allmost instantly.
As a mage , you play in so many different ways , it never gets stale. Its a class for those who prefer variety over consistency.
Early game: piercing trou blocks with limited range thorn , simple shootings staves , debuff sticks ! (More or less simple , but there are already outliers , and range is somewhat varied.
Late prehardmode: controlable projectiles , rapidfire guns , an atack stolen from a mob , bouncy slow projectiles , short range rapidfire powerhouse , bouncy balls of death!
And it goes on and on.
Lots of different , unic weapons.
And ranger , mostly just shoots.
One time from the sky.
Sometimes upclose.
Mostly from far.
Sometimes faster.
Sometimes slower.
Sometimes aiming.
Sometimes not.
It isefective , sure , but god it is same-y.
summoner is in a pretty good place at this point i think, but there should probably be more craftable weapons for both of them at major progression points
i find the existence of runs that are [specific class ONLY] so funny because i’d have never thought about the game that way - you pick up and use whatever weapon you can, and pick your armor to buff that weapon.
but they do add some interesting challenge, especially with mage/summoner making it so hard to even get a weapon, if you don’t allow yourself to ‘borrow’ melee or ranged…
The game always guide you to mix classes I like to use summons and sentries with any class even sometimes using ranged or magical weapons to attack from a far distance and weaken enemies and give debuffs. Class specific runs aim at making the game more challenging but ppl forget that alchemy is a magical sub class meaning that even healing potions are considered magical items and there isnt different ways of healing in an instant aside from magical potions. So there is no perfect class specific run. And combining classes strenghts with each other is the true fun since you explore all that the game has to offer.
I mean.. there is the nurse but only relying on her is true masochism
Dumbledor over here fighting for his life
Melee and Ranged are privileged in that you can make their weapons from the start of the game with 100% consistency.
Mage and Summoner however rely on luck, and instead have to skip to the ores equivalent if they are unlucky.
But this is alongside the fact that Terraria isn't really designed for you to play a class pure. It would be nice if that changed though. Let summoners make a stave out of critters and wood, and Mages craft the wand of sparking with torches, a fallen star, and wood.
Yeah, like, how is it fair? Summoners can at least grow abigail flowers by mass dying on the game start. While mages are completely softlocked without occasionally surface generated sparkling wands.
Exactly abigails flower while complete garbage is consistent to obtain compared to early game mage
Mages when they realize Warriors, Rangers and Summoners have much better time playing the game than them
Summoners? No
Melee and ranger? For sure
@@TheFutsu D: But summoner is *really* fun to play!
@@skeleton_master. for sure! But to compete with other classes you have to sweat quite a bit more. Its a trade off, but for casuals I'd say other classes are better. The "not dealing with normal enemies much" argument doesnt work well when every class can just get minions themselves and even get 3 slots without a single accessory wasted, let alone using 1 or 2 accessory slots for it.
I thought it was early game that was difficult. No mana, no good weapons, mana issues. Later in the game it becomes much stronger
@@TheFutsu You really need to "sweat" on bosses, and its all mostly jsut dodge a lil better, while in any other aspect summons jsut do job for you
I've never seen terraria classes as something to strictly stick to (unless doing an intentional challenge like this) and mage is always a class I use on and off based on how powerful it is at that point of the game, in conjunction with other class weapons.
The fact that playing strictly into distinct classes (in non challenge scenarios) is so heavily focused on by the community is baffling, especially pre hardmode.
@@brandonjslea1562 Playing strictly into only using one classes damage type IS a challenge scenario, you numpty. Are you also baffled that people do challenge runs in Dark Souls, or in any other game?
Edited the comment while I was typing. Carry on, then.
Classes in most games are primarily something players adhere to because it provides a strong benefit to do so, if it's not mandatory. EG in games where you can apply skill points on level up it's a good strategy to roughly stick to a class. It makes the combat easier.
In terraria on the other hand, sticking strictly to one class for the entire game can be a detriment, not done to make it easier but harder. EG I wouldn't use melee against the eye of Cthulhu on a hardmore master mode run, but would switch when the nights edge becomes available.
The way I see some areas of the community (like the wiki strategy guides) frame it is that these classes are all viable/roughly equivilant options.
@@brandonjslea1562 I don’t know about others but I like to stick to one class a run cause it gives me structure especially when playing mods it lets me go ok this is what I need these are my options let’s do this
I always just wear melee armor for the defense and use whatever weapon I want. I do have trouble with mana, low ranged damage, and low summon count, but it's still fun.
Mage needs a lot of setup, and that's why i love this class.
For me mage's biggest weakness is supposed to be a strength: the weapon variety
At every point in progression, you can find at least 3 mage weapons to use, and all of them have wildly different projectiles/effects that lean each weapon into specific use cases.
The issue is that at some points all the weapons available are just bad. Admittedly things have improved over time with more content and options, but you still can't tell me that the magic dagger and magic harp are useful against anything other than the destroyer. Then the shadowflame hex doll and crystal storm simply have too little range to be useful, the clinger staff is way too gimmicky to be useful in boss fights, and I really could keep going.
I think mage needs a buff all across the board, and it's amazing just how much better they could make the class without even touching damage numbers.
How is having weapon variety a weakness, also your take on shadow flame hex doll is wrong it’s has great dps against plant, and clinger staff is great for ooa and it’s a support weapon, also even if mage has bad weapons it not like it’s the only class look at melee a lot of its weapons are just ore or wood sword that are useless with only one or two good ones at least mage has a lot of unique weapons even if there bad
is it fair to say "mage sucks" (if meaning in general) when its main problem is weapon/mana accessibility? this is greatly exacerbated by multiplayer, and in singleplayer it's probably on par with summoner (with a matching shitty earlygame)
As mentioned, at least summoner has a much easier to obtain weapon early game with the abigail's flower. All you need to do is die. It's a lot less work, you oughta give it a try. Only problem is if you're using a hardcore character but at least then you can just have slimes eat your guide and he'll drop gravestones. Mage needs luck for chests with magic weapons, or some time spent mining to get a staff.
Pretty much, even having 1 more person alongside you play mage can be cause misery to both of you due to all the prep work for a mage to work.
Tbf, weapon accessibility is a big problem on its own, and so is mana considering it's mage's entire gimmick
Summoner at the least doesn't have such weapon issues after plantera especially (not to mention the sheer lack of damage accessories)
Summoner has one of the strongest early game setups (Snapthorn + Flinx + Vampire Frog)
@derptea7 if you get demon scythe preboss, mage can blaze through pre-hardmode with just that, and mana regen potions solve the mana issue

Mages in multiplayer:

Sucks we didnt get a 16 player hp duke fishron fight w the magic school of sorbe and his students lol
That would be glorious to see w all mages
Dodging the duke for ages didn't feel great though, had to do that with a healthier duke in some other runs. Especially if you try to chat during that
that sounds nightmarish, like beating mm duke pre-mech with decent ranger gear in singleplayer is already really stressful, this would be agony in comparison
How fitting that in one of the most hellish challenge runs youve done the Wand of Sparking is your earlygame saviour and the youtuber Wand of Sparking is known for hellish challenge runs
Being honest I play mage the most for four main reasons
1. I have the most fun with mage weapons. I find each class brings a different flavor of power fantasy, Melee making me feel like an unstoppable god, Summoner making me feel like the lord of an army of monsters, Ranger..... and Mage just feels the most right to me personally, making me feel like an adaptable boss fight with a ton of attack patterns.
2. I just kinda find it funny how blatantly overpowered mage can get pre-boss. Demon scythe ain't too hard to get early, neither is jungle armor, and that's pretty much all the setup needed to kill Wall Of Flesh (mobility accessories notwithstanding). And if you really want to ruin prehardmode's day, pre-boss Diamond Robe and Wizard Hat. Also Wand Of Sparking/Frosting being too good for when you get them imo.
3. Personal achievements. A lot of my favourite Terraria memories were of me using mage weapons, like my first ever expert mode run was a mage playthrough, or killing Duke pre-Mechdusa in a Zenith Legendary playthrough with Spirit Flame. I'm pretty bad at Terraria, so that felt pretty big for me.
4. I'm autistic, and as such my childhood fascination with magic stuff in media has followed me into my 20s. It's simply what I feel most drawn to, and usually when there's a choice of class in most games my first thought is to choose the closest thing thematically to a sorcerer.
Mage is my favourite class in the game and I'm saddened that it's probably the worst.
"Ranger......" LMFAOOOO
But yeah me too actually. Every time I start a new file, I say I'm gonna play in a different way than I usually do to switch things up, but I always end up returning to mage lol
Mage is my favorite tho. The reliance on mana makes it so much more fun as you cant just spam attack but have to make your shots count. I also like the challenge of getting the weapons. It feels too easy getting ranger & melee weapons
during the skeletron fight, it ooked like a bunch of stupefy's, avadakedavras, and some unkown spells were flying at it.
Hey I'm waiting for this, glad it was posted
Wand of Sparking best mage weapon
Omg I was wondering if 16 mages would drop and here it is
And four days later, he finally makes a video telling us all what the actual worst class is. You can practically see this boy's brain cells twitching
i have learned that sorbet cafe is drawn to the moth
Someone should of gone fishing for those mana star fish.
Mage also has a problem in multiplayer I don't see much people talk about is slow moving projectile. Take Crystal Serpent for example, normally, it's a perfectly good weapon I use for mech bosses like The Twin but when the mechanical eye chasing my friend out of screen, I would miss most of my shot due to slow firing rate and slow moving projectile. Sky Fracture has the same problem, other options like poison staff or crystal storm have bad range. Now crank this up to 16 mages and you can never kill a mech boss in time so it's understandable why you cheat your way through Duke Fishron (it would be essentially 3 pre-mech players vs 3 million health Duke). The only thing that can save the run is Spirit Lamp but man no one would farm for that 16 times
Can't wait for 16 player mediumcore challenge
I thought the most painful thing you've ever done was fighting the moon lord with a lawn mower
I think Crystal Serpent would've helped with killing Twins and then you could use the Harp to finish the other 2. Its the most mass reproduceable mage weapon in early hard mode imo.
Summoning duke with few people on the server and then having everyone rejoin to kill him when he has low health, like, completely invalidates the actual purpose of the run. I know that this is your challenge and your video to do with what you want, but I'm surprised you skimmed over this so quickly.
I’d rather do that than the alternative. There’s a hard time limit cutoff, this was the more fun alternative instead of repeatedly having a miserable time on the Mechs and not finishing the game
I find hunting for a wand of sparking and skipping every gem gear the go to for prehm mage. Unless you luck into gem veins or a bunch of them, its generally annoying to get gem sets
since it released, up to this day. summoner is the GOATT
With that many players needing resources fishing might have been a better way to get early stuff
Of course he had to be a mage with that title
4:18 cant get a monster garden refence past me within seeing
huh
Sckeletron batle is SO pretty.
Magic.
Yea , mage is quite resource heavy in early game)
For players who never played mage: the only reason why it was painfull is because with 16 players there are almost no resourse for a single person, everyone has weak weapons, no mana. No mana potions. A normal mage playthrough should be fine.
I tend to use mage pre-WOF and post-plantera a lot and fill in the weaker spots with ranged
"He's right behind me isn't he" ahh thumbnail

I've always considered Mage the hardest class to play, but this is ridiculous!
Let's go my favourite terrarist just uploaded
the scrapped video is REAL
i like mage, but its hard to pry the fallen stars from the ranger whos saving them on day 2
2:26 why would you not say snowcean
Finally someone actually saying that mage pre skeletron has nothing
My comment didnt save from when i saw it this a few days ago :(
Basicslly, are you gonna make more audiobooks?
i tried mage on a master mode world and realized i have 5 defense and do 2 damage when drinking mana potions if i want just a little bit of mobility(i need to dodge attacks)
I love mage just because how powerfull it can be. But sometimes you grind a lot and its still mediocre
I always go for Duke Fishron pre-mech when I play a mage class. Reason for that is because otherwise mage doesn't have any good or not grindy weapons (like tome of wisdom) to fight mech bosses.
So fighting Fishron that early is a huge crutch for a mage class (otherwise mage sucks just like early pre-hardmode)
Uhmm?
Sky fracture?
Meteor staff?
Life drain?
@@Sonic_K Sky fracture is too weak (+-400 dps) + eats a ton of mana, crystal serpent is better but takes a lot of time to get.
meteor staff is good but only against crowds/Destroyer. Same for Nimbus Rod, Clinger Staff, Crystal Vile Shard.
Life drain? More like Mana drain, lol.
The point is that any other class has a great option that works for any boss in early hardmode. i'm not saying that you can't kill the Twins with the sky fracture, it's that any other class has a better and more reliable options without restrictions such as mana / mana sickness debuff.
@@Mothmook I'm sorry are we using the same weapons?
All of the weapons I mentioned are viable for Plantera, as I've used all 3 on that boss on master mode and won.
The Life Drain doesn't use a lot of mana, idk what you're talking about.
The Meteor Staff does, but deals very heavy dmg and works well for Twins and Prime.
The Sky Fracture is absolutely insane and the Crystal Serpent is not better, fracture has like 100 more dps.
Also summoner is the ultimate loser when it comes to early-hm, you need the Blade/Sanguine staff to stand a chance against the mechs, and obtaining these from flying bosses using ground-based minions is a huge pain.
Melee doesn't really have great options early-hm either, drippler crippler is good but annoying to get and dao of pow is meh, shadowflame knife is decent ig and bananarangs are like ok.
Also you can cheese the Destroyer with crystal vile shard as mage.
@@Sonic_K Abigail + firecracker can consistently kill destroyer in under two minutes, and spider staff is perfectly capable of killing the twins; you don't "need" sanguine or blade staff to stand a chance
Melee's options, dao of pow and drippler crippler, are also its most consistent for the mechs; dao kills destroyer quickly by hitting the coil or along the body, and bananarang is melee's best pre-mech option for twins. Melee also has yelets for prime and twins
so basically in the end, y'all had to cheat a duke fishron kill to progress?
Surprised you and everyone else didn't become like jevil
The problem i already see is mage weapons' large i-frames, if you use 16 lightning staffs (drop from crates) you'll tear through skeletron but 16 diamond staffs will just screw you over cause the s will nullify most of the hits
Doesn't every player apply their own set of Iframes
That’s actually not an issue, because static i frames are applied per player, not per projectile category. Back when weapons applied global i frames this was an issue, but I don’t think a single weapon uses global i frames anymore
@@sorbetcafe Ah just outdated knowledge then LMAO, been playing since 1.1 so some stuff is still old

9:20 couldnt everyone fish up crystal serpants here? cheesing fishron's health feels like cheating the "challenge" imo.
crystal serpent should be enough to kill twins and/or , where you can then make rainbow rods for prime if serpent isnt good enough. or at least, if youre gonna do early duke, do it right.
not enough time

Why did you not farm spiders for the poison staff it’s not very good but it’s better than nothing and very easy to get in large quantities
People did have poison staffs and were farming spiders, the soul of light farm I fixed was in a nest
i’ve always found mage to be the weakest class ever since summoner was given its rework, and just in general to be my least favorite class to play in general. mage just feels incredibly unbalanced from a progression standpoint, and more than that, mana is always super finnickey to work with. you either need mana regen to supplement, or you just chug mana potions, which only really gets viable in hardmode once your mana potions can actually reach a good amount of mana healing. at least with pre-1.4 summoner, it had a certain novelty to it, even if it did objectively suck more. mage is just… kind of mid compared to rest of the classes.
what about 16 mages vs infernum
I'm not saying I hate mage but I'd rather play any other class

i feel like this isnt a fair comparison of classes though. putting all four classes into a competition of "who can beat the game first" is obviously rigged against a class that takes half the time limit to get the first weapon and actually begin to make progress.
The competition isn’t who can beat the game first, it’s not a race.
