Oh so this is why everybody had a full confidence in the validity of his record 👀 Salt, when I asked you in the stream why the MTPO community easily trusted him I was just curious what kind of guy he is. Now that you uploaded this, though, it's impossible to not trust him from the way he talks alone.
I think that since almost all of his records were accompanied by strategy guides that were valid and led to an ability to tie or beat his times, there was no reason to assume any of his records were made up. Also as the TASes were made that proved the possibility of some of his more elusive times that only solidified his reputability.
If you are an active member in the speedrunning community, who isn't afraid to answer questions and tell everyone how you accomplished your records, then you immediately gain a lot of trust from the community. Back in the early 2000s, it was near impossible to upload videos as proof so it was not expected when proving world records.
Huh. Was kind of curious about why his times never really seemed challenged except for one. This video answers that pretty clearly. Matt seems like an upstanding dude with great knowledge about the game and doesn't seem at all concerned about grandstanding.
I might be Remembering wrong, but I'm pretty sure years ago I saw in a bunch of old punchout forums when people were struggling to beat Matt's times, he would pop up and wish everyone good luck. I think speedrun sites should have hall of fame of sorts, and older unverifiable times to be written down in some way Seeing dry times doesn't really tell the story, Matt was a champion, and old timers should have their place of glory
Wait did he just mention Brisulph? I watched his youtube channel like a decade ago and knew he was into Punchout but not an og like this. Kind of surreal how 10 years later and a name like that come back in the most unexpected time. Brisulph actually just started uploading a bit more recently (still only 2k subcribers). Much love.
Man, I'm amazed that Brisulph hasn't done a Punch Out talkthrough yet. Seems like he'd be the one to do it, considering he's been in the community for so long.
I feel like people aren't very aware that the internet really didn't start see things like streaming and RUclips as a major source of entertainment until 2012/2013. Internet connections didn't catch up for that level of demand until around that point for speedrunning and JustinTv/Twitch to become widespread amongst the average user. These things definitely had their communities and were available before then, but it wasn't until around those years that the wider public were able to start to latch on to streaming in general.
I love the apology for the poor quality when the quality is actually great. Even the CRT looks pretty damn good on the image despite the refresh rate Desync.

I'd guess the same way we do now. They didn't have tools as good as now, but they still had a bunch of talented people lab out all kinds of stuff, and communicate with each other about it. By the time we discovered the community we basically had to retrace a full five years of developments, so it's no surprise that it took about as long to get back to where they was.
There was a community on Gamefaqs and other sites where 5-6 of them in particular would come up with strategies and e-mail back and forth and beat each other's times.
Does anyone know why early Punch out speedrunning stopped? Did they just get too old for it, or was it because no one back then could hope to match Matt Turks godlike execution and unyielding perseverance?
@@dazey856 But as far as I understand, there were both TASes and Guides around, so while it was more difficult to gain knowledge than today, it was equally more difficult for everyone. He collected that knowledge just like others would have to, from being shared around in the community. It was just harder to share. I'd go so far to say that knowledge is just about the only thing where Matt didn't outmatch other runners by a landslide.
