A lot of you saying this was a backhanded compliment, but I think you have to remember that most actors struggle with mental health issues. Empathy is what makes you a good actor, but it also tends to cause anxiety and depression. And these issues are ESPECIALLY bad in those that start so young. What I see here is a woman admiring another woman who she knows has most likely struggled emotionally, but has kept it together in spite of those struggles. She is speaking from experience. Yes, it might be a little weird being that emotionally vulnerable with someone you hardly know. But guess what-that’s what actors do every single day. I do not envy them.
Wasn’t backhanded at all people just don’t understand that Australian and UK tone can land differently, Zendaya knows this because she is with Tom and always in UK, so you can tell she sees it as a genuine and real moment
I honestly thought Zendaya was trying to be sarcastic when she said "seem" (implying she's good a faking perfection but behind closed doors is probably a struggle). Some people can't tell when others are depressed because they hide it so well. It looks like Nicole is actually giving her a compliment but Zendaya is like "ma'am you must not know me very well". That's what I got. The people thinking this is back handed are just insecure.
Yeah it felt like Nicole saw something she had to learn the hard way being done naturally and immediately encouraged it. It positive reinforcement. Those are great and meaningful words from Nicole Kidman! She genuinely cares and truly admires Zendaya as an ambitious, successful young woman. And every young person should hear her message. Support is crucial, you can't do it alone. Rest is a requirement, not a reward.
She’s basically saying keep good company and friends and support system around u till the end! Even if that support system is a blankey because everyone is not here for your highest good so be wise with who u allow into your circle
This is why you need to cultivate friendships with older people who share your experiences. Nicole is saying ‘hey you are taking care of yourself and that’s vital, don’t let anyone shame you for this good thing you’re doing’
I always admired about Zendaya that she’s in that industry but instead of working for it she makes it work for her. She doesn’t let the system toss her around but clearly defines her boundaries and makes sure to keep those. She also seems to have very good people backing her up and like she’d check every contract thrice and like she wouldn’t ever sign anything she’s not fully aware of and fine with. It takes a lot of effort to really stand your ground like that.
It’s such an appropriate commentary from Nicole especially considering challengers is supposed to be an ‘adult’ film but is really the film for people who think they are adults- where physical developed, emotionally immature ‘adults’ do grown things in the most juvenile way possible. It’s the comedy for women and the drama girls film 💗🥂🎀
Interesting to see so many people struck by Zendaya's reaction and any perceived ungraciousness on her part. I read it as humility, but I am reminded that a compliment is only a compliment if the recipient perceives it as one. A good compliment stems from consistently observable actions, from knowing and/or being known. There's a difference between definitively saying someone is a certain thing (i.e., "you are") verses saying that they carry that illusion (i.e., "you seem"). That is no slight to Nicole because her intentions "seem" pure, but (like the aforementioned) these types of compliments are no more than meritless assumptions or time-filling rhetoric, which some people read as "backhanded". I dont think that was Nicole's intention, though.
I don't think she's one of the best young actresses, but there is no question Zendaya is the biggest star of her generation. And Nicole is right in that she is doing stardom and managing her career perfectly. Zendaya never says the wrong thing, treats everyone around her well, and is just overall beloved. The way she carries herself is quite admirable.
I love this idea. I'm having the same realisation about mental health stuff. Like, if you need 3 meditations a day with breathing exercises and yoga regularly and a therapist to feel normally healthy - that's completely fine. It's you feeling good in a healthy is what matters❤️ no shame needed
I had a stuffed animal from the age of 5-22. I gave it up during a big transition in life because I thought I needed to “grow up” and be “stronger.” Now at 25 I got myself another stuffed animal as replacement because I am actually stronger and mature enough to realise that finding comfort in something doesn’t make me a child... it makes me human.
It always seems like Zendaya is very uncomfortable in every interview she is in with another actor, and she always covers it up with nervous, light hearted laughter.
@AviusL I think Z was uncomfortable with the compliment and tried to deflect with something self deprecating. Zendaya does that quite a bit in interviews I've noticed. And it's very common to see in introvert generally. Z would've known the type of interview she was getting into when she agreed to it, Actors on Actors has been going a decade and has had some very famous people on it. Its become quite the thing for award nominees to do as press as it's less scary to have an extended interview with another actor. Since they moved into showing clips on various socials it's got a whole new audience. I highly recommend watching
What's giving you that vibe? Zendaya seemed very sincere to me. Her reaction is most people's when they are complimented. Slightly embarrassed but touched.
Zendaya completely at a loss for what to say... She was monosyllabic the whole time. People can come up with a variety of excuses for their behavior ... At certain moments she gives off an air of arrogance.
Definitely! Nicole knows how rough life can be in the industry because she's been there and gone through it. It's so obvious that she was paying her a compliment and Zendaya took it as anything but. Give Zendaya a few decades, she'll look back and realize what Nicole was trying to tell her once she's been through her own drama.
Also Zendaya is so cute, she was struggling to accept the compliment bc she knows she’s got a lot (like the rest of us) but Nicole sees she’s on the right path and is lovely to hear wiser ppl just say it like it is.
Geeze I would be so intimidated by Nicole! But I bet it would be so fascinating to talk to her, too. Zendaya looked like she had no idea what she was saying or how to respond in this clip 😂
I think Nicole was being very genuine in her concern for a younger actress, and she has so much experience and knowledge in the industry. I don’t think Zendaya is comfortable discussing this topic so she is deflecting making jokes and you can tell by her facial expressions. She is not interested in Nicole’s advice because she thinks she has it figured out already and maybe she does.! Nicole is a phenomenal actress. No Zendana did not take thus interview seriously unfortunately. She thinks she doesn't need feedback, and that will hurt her in this industry and hinder her growth as an actress.
I haven't seen the full interview but from what little I saw here you are probably right. However, I will say it is important for actors to protect their energy - I think Zendaya probably didn't know enough abt Nicole's motive to offer that vulnerability. Thinking of the various 2 faced peers you run into in that business, I can understand the apprehension. Beyond that, she is aware no matter what she says a headline will be crafted and pushed as the content is chopped & screwed in 8 different 30 sec. clips and used to boost engagement 🙃. Most importantly, one of the very reason's Zendaya has continued to have success over the years is the way she carefully crafts her public image. She is very similar to Beyonce in that regard. As soon as she gained the proper leverage, Beyoncé stopped doing interviews almost completely and the last time she did Vogue she wrote her own questions 😂. Ofc I'm sure many people are curious to know how she navigated pitfalls of the industry & kept grounded, I'm willing to grant Zendaya grace on this occasion. She previously talked about her time after Disney where she was 19/20 still living with her parents. We already know good parents that shield the child while they are in adult environments is the main ingredient anyways 🤷♀️.
@DeluxeDeath If you watch actors on actors between Amy Adams and Nicole, you will understand the difference. Adams and even after all those years, she was like, no I don't wanna talk about me, I'm here to ask and learn from your experience. Instead, she could have just asked Nicole questions that may help her in her acting journey. I don't blame the generation gap because some other young actors speak less and listen more at the presence of their veteran colleagues.
Especially having the opportunity to sit with a veteran in her craft, she should've cherished this moment... Zendaya came off very defensive and not willing to receive.
Wow after watching the whole interview I don’t see why you guys say such negative things. Feels like you watched another thing. It was such a good conversation mixed with moments of laughter. Zendaya was not receiving it.... At first. Nicole did not seem condescending, in fact she was giving her props for managing in such a chaotic career and life that comes with it.
Zendaya is such a gracious woman. Nicole has grown into her wisdom, it’s nice to see that she’s fostering good self care in the younger generation, but I think Zendaya has life dialed in. ❤
They need to let the actors hangout at least 24h before shooting this to familiarise with each other because the actors on actors episodes who don't know each other or don't have anything in common seem awkward and a bit forced!!!!
The Zendaya and Andrew Garfield one was EXCELLENT because they did know one another from No Way Home. They even had inside jokes from the set! That was a fantastic episode with two people full of mutual respect and affection ❤
These are A-listers, some with families too - they don’t all have 24 hours to spare to just chill in a common location. Both Nicole & Zendaya said in this convo that they flew straight from night shooting to make it to this & they’ll be flying right back out to resume work.
Entertainers are human beings FIRST, and are just as able to have struggles like the rest of us. Good lucks, money, and fame does not absolve anyone of that experience. If anything, being a celebrity may exacerbate human struggles because the public assumes you're not human (shut up! You're rich! The public MADE you, we can say and treat you however we want!); family issues; relationship issues; friendships; aging; being a man vs a woman; weight; looks; entertaining...the list goes on. The world is cut throat...that entertainment world seems 100 times that. If someone can maintain sanity and stability in that line of work, then that's probably the highest compliment.
Zendaya doesn't know what to do with this, neither would I. Nicole is making an assumption about her because of her age. It seems like such general advice that may not even apply to Zendaya personally. Although, it might come from the right place.
Omg I’m so with you on this. Zen is an extremely intelligent woman I felt Nicole was a bit condescending here if I’m honest and zen doesn’t want to be rude to Nicola so she goes along with her but Nicole gave me a vibe like she was slightly annoyed that Zen had the audacity to question her saying she ‘seems’ stable. It’s a bit of an insult whereas Nicole thinks she’s giving her a compliment
@@SweetUareDesi they don't know each other and Kidman is the industry waaaay more time than Zendaya, also when things were different, of course she knows more than us about the backstages, the pression to look in a certain way. Of course you guys have to take it everything to the evil side.
Nicole is analyzing and being insightful because of the world she grew up in (a lot of us her age) and zendaya is like, “why is she saying all this?” Like, zendaya (and people her age) never think about stuff this way, it’s just a given for their generation
No. Nicole was condescending! Also, companion is asking question and having a conversation. This was a great subject of conversation executed poorly all through. I like Zendaya node and refusal to engage. She was definitely the stable and more aware person here. 😂 Zendy is such a big person! ❤❤❤
Nicole Kidman, stop! Zendaya kept trying to elaborate or participate in the dialogue & couldn't get a word in edgewise... Kidman talked over her when she was saying, "That's my emotional support"... You can see Zendaya taking a breath to add to the conversation & then biting her lip & furrowing her brow as Kidman just kept on & on w/ her monologue 🙄
Zendaya also has a great system at home. Her parents protected her and they don’t play, they never have, since she was with Disney. Tom also doesn’t play with her. I wonder if Chloe and Halle have the same kind of tribe because they’ve been making some decisions lately. I hope they are okay and protected.
I think this was meant as a very big complement on Zendaya being who she is and also being able to transition into different roles as a performer and a woman
Especially when you have the right parents in your life that'll help support whatever dream you've wanna do & let u make mastiakes. Learn from them butstill have that love their

😂 @@KCLARK98What I was thinking LOL
@@KCLARK98Your comment tickles me.
I love that. Sometimes it's the little things that have the most impact
@@KCLARK98 no like a scarf that goes around my neck😂
True, I always saw her as a teenage star (now adult) very stable
It's beautiful to see how much you love your family. I'm glad you have good support from them
Nicole ‘s skin looks UN-Reaaaal!!!!❤
I think when she said stable she meant grounded, it just came across weird
I love how Nicole Kidman genuinely cares about Zendaya.
so.sweet of Nicole. ❤
She’s been through a lot with these roles… I think now she just knows to protect herself a little more.
Zendaya looks like she zoning out haha
She's like what is Nicole talking about.
Nicole genuinely lovesss herrrrr can you imagine Nicole Kidman being impressed and starstruck by you ?? Win
Excellent advice for any human. ❤
Two beautiful ladies!
They need to let the actors hangout at least 24h before shooting this to familiarise with each other because the actors on actors episodes who don't know each other or don't have anything in common seem awkward and a bit forced!!!!
Yes!
The Zendaya and Andrew Garfield one was EXCELLENT because they did know one another from No Way Home. They even had inside jokes from the set! That was a fantastic episode with two people full of mutual respect and affection ❤
@@juliewagner3023 THISSS!!!
These are A-listers, some with families too - they don’t all have 24 hours to spare to just chill in a common location. Both Nicole & Zendaya said in this convo that they flew straight from night shooting to make it to this & they’ll be flying right back out to resume work.
Pink blush looks so good on you especially with your hair colour!!
I will never not be obsessed with the funny faces zendaya makes lol. Little quirky queen
zendaya is super pretty oh my god
WoW Nicole Kidman, and Zandaya! Perferct
No Zendaya now Tom but Nicole 😂😂😂😂
Entertainers are human beings FIRST, and are just as able to have struggles like the rest of us. Good lucks, money, and fame does not absolve anyone of that experience. If anything, being a celebrity may exacerbate human struggles because the public assumes you're not human (shut up! You're rich! The public MADE you, we can say and treat you however we want!); family issues; relationship issues; friendships; aging; being a man vs a woman; weight; looks; entertaining...the list goes on. The world is cut throat...that entertainment world seems 100 times that. If someone can maintain sanity and stability in that line of work, then that's probably the highest compliment.
it's not a backhanded compliment...most actors don't actually know each other. So on can only go by outward appearance.
Zendaya looking like “what is she talking about?”
Lol
😂😂😂
Zendaya is not interested at all...that's what an easy life brings, she feels bored
While all, what Nicola was saying were valuable and interesting points, I wish we could hear Zendaya’s words also about the subject.
if someone ever tells me, i seem stable, im'ma say thank you...
Zendaya seemed to not appreciate the compliment. Maybe she's unaware of the space Nicole has occupied for decades. Nicole's been through it.
Nicole was holding space?
Or she doesn't feel seen because she feels unstable, who knows 🤷
@@jamieleigh807 I don’t see what was condescending about this interaction. It’s was a compliment
@@Gmhfseyhbin what way was this statement from nicole a compliment? Low standards for compliments…
@@SweetUareDesi they don't know each other and Kidman is the industry waaaay more time than Zendaya, also when things were different, of course she knows more than us about the backstages, the pression to look in a certain way. Of course you guys have to take it everything to the evil side.
That actually is a good point 👏🏾
This is good advice ☺️ watching from Northeast India..
Nicole is analyzing and being insightful because of the world she grew up in (a lot of us her age) and zendaya is like, “why is she saying all this?” Like, zendaya (and people her age) never think about stuff this way, it’s just a given for their generation
Nonsense. That’s just jealousy.
Love this exchange. ❤
Nicole is right
Love these two together.
No. Nicole was condescending! Also, companion is asking question and having a conversation. This was a great subject of conversation executed poorly all through.
I like Zendaya node and refusal to engage.
She was definitely the stable and more aware person here. 😂
Zendy is such a big person! ❤❤❤
Zendaya is very cold. She never talk about anything of importance or depth. She just says what she thinks everyone wants to hear
To this day, my favorite character Nicole Kidman played was Gillian in "Practical Magic" ❤
This made me feel better
I....need.Nicole in a Tarantino movie. That tie works.
Especially when you have the right parents in your life that'll help support whatever dream you've wanna do & let u make mastiakes. Learn from them butstill have that love their
Zendaya bé like: "unlike yourself"😅. Nicole looks crazy here, i guess its the plastic surgery making her all stiff.
Z is mentally stable because her parents didnt let her grow up too fast, no matter her career, which still supporting her career. she still lives at home.
That was so beautiful of her
Kidman sabe como llegar. She was properly guarded and she desarmed her
Oh, boy. Wanna be like you when I grow up 😂😂 even if it is to defend myself.
Wish Zendaya the best and not letting this hollywood sh*t end with her
Its not some soart of blanket. They want you to feel that. You just protecting yourself ❤
Well explained Kidman.
yal ... the fact zendaya did that look and said "seem..."" then quickly said "no im kidding".... she was not feeling this at all
Zandaya doesent feel ❤
yea her Virgo tendencies took over unfortunately
lol it was a joke, but nicole was in the middle of paying a serious compliment and stuck to it… i haven’t seen the whole thing but these two are clearly not in the same (or same type of) social circles lol
