Thank you for the release!
I can confirm this works with dual booting and is super simple. Make a partition in steam deck recovery, then boot into Macrium, and drag and drop your partitions onto the drive.
Hi keep getting blue screen telling me windows needs to be repaired every time I try this any ideas what would be causing it? Thanks in advance
Did you copy all 3 partitions over?
If you have refind dual boot you need to remove ut before installing windows (you can activate it again later). Also make sure to remove the efi microsoft files from your hardrive(otherwise you will end up with 4 of them like me ) before you try to reinstall windows.
@@markmurphy1816let me know if you have any more problems, took me all of yesterday to fix. 😅 But I just got it working! 😎
can you make a video of that?
Why tf are you so underrated??? U deserve at least 2m for this
bro... i don't know how you did it! but... you actually managed to put the steam keyboard, so i can type on desktop just like on steam os! that's what was missing for me on windows... thumbs up dude! live saver! :))
Hey brother! Very appreciate the video! Very unfortunate that it was taken down before.
Currently saving money to buy a steam deck and install this for sure.
I really suggest you to make other types of contents as well. Like Console / Tech reviews. It would be so great because you very soothing voice bro!
Keep up the awesome work 🔥💪
As a steam deck owner, dont buy 256/512gb version. Just buy the ssd and swap it by yourself. Its very easy and much cheaper. I have now 1tb console:D
lmao i got this in my recommended since i watch a ton of steam deck videos and i instantly recognized your voice from your bonelab videos then saw the channel name. Didn't know you had another channel! This looks nice, i'll probably try dual booting it
lmao that's super cool too hear
A little bit of some trouble getting this installed on my external dock SSD but eventually it worked! I was getting hung up because I wasn’t able to write to my USB after flashing the ISO to it:-/ but luckily I just put the windeckos image on another usb and plugged both into my dock at the same time! I wanted to make this my MAIN OS but before I do that I’ll have it on my external 1tb m.2 that’s in my dock! Great way to test drive it haha but thanks man! Awesome tutorial and sick OS! You made the steam deck community very happy and earned a sub from me💪🏽
i dont even have a steam deck but I still watched through the video because I love your content
I've used windeck os for about 3 months and haven't had many issues. The only thing that bothers me is that games and windows recognise the joysticks as a mouse. But I use a program called handheld companion that emulates a xbox controller and even brings back the built in benchmarking tool.
Thanks for doing this, just installed it on my Steam Deck and it's running great!
Super happy to hear
thank you the tutorial was super easy to follow!
This looks really clean! would love to see a superlite version of this; the biggest thing keepign me from having a windows install all the time is how bad memory usage is with stuff like defender and steam itself; ive definitely noticed worse performance over steam os. still tho, would totoally recommend this to friends who want an elegant windows install.
you can disable defender, what else do you want lol
Unless you already have an anti virus, don't uninstall windows defender smh
I installed this yesterday but my windows say i need to activate it. Do you know why?
@@Trwakanicoyou could pay but if you’re like me just follow a guide to activate windows for free with kms
@@Trwakanico Research helps, man
I gave this a thumbs up just from the first 39 seconds of the video. But also thanks for making a good tutorial.
Functional sleep mode in windows is a game changer. Been on windows on the deck forever but this is a hug QoL upgrade!
“Been on windows on the deck forever.” Why would you willingly do this to yourself?
@@John3_16_ because it's better!! All games work regardless. No proton bullshit, all emulators work like a dream, and best of all sailing the high seas is WAAAAYYYYY easier.
And if you really miss SteamOS there's big picture mode.
@@serik21 this tells me that you either A. Haven’t used Steam OS much at all, or B. You haven’t used it since early release. Which emulators don’t work well in Steam OS? Xbox 360, which is the only unsupported one currently out there (edit* apparently 360 emulation works now. probably not perfect, but it’s a new decently new development)? A lack Multiplayer anti-cheat functionality is a deal breaker for some gamers for sure. I can wrap my head around that.
@@John3_16_ nah, SteamOS isn't for me. Dual booted for a while and NEVER booted up SteamOS for any reason. Sounds like you haven't spent enough time in windows on the deck or just prefer Linux in general and that's fine. But Windows is objectively more compatible with everything in the gaming world. And I'll say it again, if you steal games its WAAAAAYYY easier on Windows.
@@serik21 I’ve used windows for 24 years of my 32 my guy lol. I don’t need to install an OS on my steam device that comes with all of the issue attached to Windows/M$ (baring experimentation, benchmarking, curiosity, etc.). I’ve used linux as a daily driver for the last four to include on my gaming desktop rig. Remove the needless tribalism from the discussion here. I’m curious to any valid reasons and so far you haven’t given any besides “it’s just better!”. I gave you multiplayer anti cheat. That was a fair concession. You can do what you want, it’s your device 🤪
Awesome release. Extremely tailored for an initial release. I was using Tiny11, but happy to say this is a much better solution. No need to dual boot since this holds most of the functions of SteamOS with all the benefits of Windows. Thank you!
There are benefits to running windows?
@@John3_16_ for instance some games refuse to run on Linux even with proton
@@John3_16_ alot of things are kernel based so the linux version wont be able to run those games or take alot of tweaking to run, altho ive seen worse performance on winodws
@@Wattermelondog yeah that last sentence is what I expected. I honestly can’t tell you anything in my library won’t run under Steam OS besides multiplayer anti-cheat games. I have 400+ games and emulation also works great under steam OS. Yeah sometimes some tweaking is necessary to get something to run (a special proton version most likely), but that’s the spirit of PC gaming for you.
@@John3_16_ running windows games in windows should in theory give you better performance since you eliminate the compatibility layer, but windows in itself can really be a resource hog that you have to optimize to get the most out of your device
So excited to try this out!!
lmk what u think
What a legend my dude
If I ever get a Steam Deck, I will probably use this! Tysm!
great video, easy to follow, really enjoying windeck!! keep up the good work dude!!
Are you still enjoying windeck?
@@KleeEditz i switched back to steamos, windows wasnt really well with me on the deck
@@martonbor9492 performance wise it sucks. I wish arc sys and epic games support their games that have anticheat.
Have to say what u have done is absolutely awesome 😎👍
Loving the video!
Great Work!
I was wondering if you are going to make a WinDeckOS version for the New Oled Steam Deck ?
Since the old drivers are not compatible with the new deck.
Great work. Just curious will this work or support with other types of handheld like Ally,Aya,GPD. Thanks and keep it up.
Bro this is amazing !
Thank you so much! This worked! But I went back to SteamOS re-imaging my steam deck. Reason for is I played Sonic Frontiers and the screen was black… however there was audio and everything.
Subbed for the intro 😆
I just spent all night getting windows 11 on my deck and I just found this….. I’m doing this tomorrow, this is way better than just flat out windows
how it went?
Hello, thanks for this amazing project! I just have one question, I got my brand new Deck and an M2 2230 SSD, can I install the ISO directly onto this new SSD without that Macrium partitioning part? I'll still have the original eMMC saved in case.
Thanks for the video this really helped me out
This looks awesome mini, the only thing that was keeping me from switching to windows was the bugginess ive heard.
No it works great
I was your 1000th subscriber lol
Heyo man gj for this, waiting for my new ssd and will install it asap. 2 questions - does xbox gamepass pc works and does xbox wireless controller works ?
Great instructions! Is it also possible to install it on an external ssd? I now have Windows 10 on my external running and would like to switch to win deck.
It's awesome!! very good ThankU
Glad you like it!
Fantastic work, is it possible to install on an sd card though?
Installing this today
This is amazing. I haven't tried it yet but I do wonder if any future Steam updates will mess anything with it, but I assume it will not because Steam is working independently like a regular app out of the OS?
Yes it is. Also there's a specific version of steam used for first time setup that will always work on deck at least before steam auto updates when you connect to the internet
Hi thanks for the awesome work on windeckOS really love it. Can't wait for the next update release.
Btw can you make a tutorial on how to copy current SSD data from steamdeck to a new one, as i was thinking to upgrade my SSD but don't want to start all over just wanted to copy everything and replaced the SSD.
Could you update the patch notes to tell us exactly what you uninstalled to debloat windows?
Everything was normal up until the partition part, I deleted them and it didn't let me format a single one due to it not being/being NTFS. Now I'm gonna have to reinstall everything on SteamOS again. Great guide.
It happens re try it
Do you mind if i make a full video about this to review it? I will of course include your channel in the description and pinned comment.
Pretty cool combining steam and windows will be instaling this when I get my deck just one question I have can I use windows 10 media creation tool instead of 11 not a fan of windows 11
love this! Maybe Rog ally/ayaneo WindeckOS next?
Thanks again man, I’m almost using this great tool that you made!! I have a quick question just to confirm, is the “Running install script” process always shown when we open a game on a fresh OS start?
Only on a games first boot. Second time booting the same game, it won't show up.
@@largefriendlylop excellent! Thanks a lot man!!
Hey love the os! I have a question though. What if the WiFi driver you used. Thanks!
Please create a dual boot tutorial assuming Steam OS is already installed, I have too much configuration set up on Steam OS for emulators , so its hard to go only for WinDeckOS , please if you get some time try to make a short video how to do it, thanks
Thank you for the great video!
It was pretty quick and to the point. Appreciate it and keep up the good work!
How is this compared to the stock stream OS? Is this better or would it be recommended to dual boot both Windows & steam OS?
I’ll be getting my steam deck soon and have been researching online and watching countless videos so prepare myself for the best portable gaming experience. I’ll be installing a 2TB internal NVME 2230 SSD and also have a 1TB Micro SD card so storage shunt be too much of an issue
@@m_ax1. i use gpd win 4 perfect with win deck os
Do you have a discord for people to join and ask questions?
WindeckOS Looks Great!!! Two questions; did you Remove your Steam OS against windeckOS on the internal SSD? And Works windeck OS like Steam? Is it possible to install Games on the Micro SD? My internal SSD is 128GB only and Windows on this ssd is Not perfect :/ and the Last questions? Is it possible to make a Dual Boot SSD with windeckOS? Thank you
What "Xbox Controller Emulation" did you use for Xbox games and apps? Shown in "WinDeckOS Preview - Simplifying windows on steam deck"
First off, great great work !!!! what's the music you use in the background of the video ?
A mixture of songs from the WIi U's menu music
I've installed it like you said, but I have a couple of problems:
1. It won't stop pestering me to activate Windows, but I don't have an activation code.
2. The trackpad mouse won't work in specific window files or pop ups.
Any advice?
I wanted to ask if you could do a written guide on how to install this separately onto another partition.
I like Windeck OS, but I’d like to switch from Windeck to Steam Deck OS every once in a while.
Excellent work, my question is can I do the clean installation without doing dualboot just install Windows or I will be required to do this method
This setup isn't for dual boot. If you currently have steamOS you'll need to wipe the drive, if you already have windows you can just skip to the timestamp I mention.
Thanks for the video, I love the OS so far, very much streamlined using WIndows on Deck.
I am just missing the easy access advanced power setting from Steam OS for the games requiring less power.
DId you try to dual boot it alongside steam os? Cause my install of rEFInd is NOT able to start Windeck OS. (it recognises the windows install but is unable to boot it and throws me back to the OS selection menu)
This seem super cool but how hard would it be to revert to regular steam os if I ended up not liking WinDeck OS? I wanna try this but I also want to make sure I can go back if I need to
Thanks so much for this! Got it all set up. One issue though, my steam deck now is seemingly not recognizing my sd card any more. Any help on this?
What controller driver do you use for non-Steam games?
Hi I managed to install this. Thank you very much. However, two questions: 1) there are three unknown devices unable to identify drivers; 2) rumble doesn't work? or at least i don't know where I can test it. appreciate your help.
Yeah ;-; I’m definitely appreciative of the work. Regrettably, I’m unable to get that OS ;-;
Update: Windeck’a pretty cool. I ended up grabbing this myself from another link. At any case, thanks bro. Hopefully sooner that I will have my stuff back to where it was but better. Thanks, man.
So is gaming mode just for Big Picture Mode like on any pc that has steam installed? There’s definitely a quality issue between that mode and actual Steam OS. That would be the only keeping me from doing this. Looks great though!
Will you be making another windeck install video for Steam Deck Oled?
I previously sold my Steamdeck and repurchased it because of your WindeckOS release, good job. I have 2 issues, when I add non-steam games, Steamdeak UI no longer functions as a game installed from within Steam, the controllers don't work. Any help.
@Largefriendly Lop
could i do this tutorial as soon as i buy my steam deck for the first time or would i setup the steam deck first and then do this tutorial?
hello, first congratulation for this great OS and project. but i want to ask 1 question.. can we install it on External SSD so i don't need to erase internal Steam deck directory? please answer it
thank you
You can, but things like sleep mode may not work
question time! so if a new version comes out will it update like a normal wondows pc or do i have to format the deck with the new version ?
Hey Largefriendly! What do you think about a Discord server for Windeck OS where we can share tips/questions?
great OS thank you for your hard work.
just one question how can i use the steam power tools with this os?
You can't. The Decky loader is for Linux, unless someone specifically makes a Windows version it will not work. There are other tools you can use like the ones by ayufan(you'll have to Google this yourself due to RUclips hating links) to tweak some settings.
So I have Windex and I love it but I don't know how to update my steam deck other than steams big picture mode update or the actual Windows update like will it update to the latest bios or what?
woah the bonelab guy over here making windows on the steam deck crazy
Do you need to delete SteamOS? I was hoping to install WinDeckOS on to my MicroSD card. If its possible, could you possibly make a guide on what you need to do? I assume its only the start up tot he first restart that would be diffierent? Thanks!
I got macrium reflect free, is it really necessary to completely delete your steam deck partitions to get to that screen?
Edit: it actually works just like this. When i tried a few days ago the deck refused to boot up with my macrium reflect
I just installed it on my steam deck and i would like to mention a few issues i have. 1st is that I can't see my home wifi or my phone's hotspot even when i enter them manually, and also my windows isn't activated despite what u mentioned at the start of the video about it not needing a license. Other than that it's great and i hope it gets updates!
You are an absolute legend! I've finally got a way to play Minecraft and Ubisoft games easily on a fantastic device that's limited by Linux support (for now)
You already can play minecraft on the steam deck. It's extremely easy too.
I recently undid my dual boot because I hated dealong with windows. Though if I ever try it again, ill be sure to use this!
Wow that's great. Can you make a dualboot video?
Will this image work on a non steam deck device? I feel like this could be pretty cool on an n100 minipc to use as a TV box.
Do you prefer to run windows on the steam deck? I’ve never owned one or really mess with handhelds and was thinking of getting this or the ally but it seems like the deck is better
I've found that the trackpads make a huge difference in navigating Windows, but I still prefer SteamOS due to performance. It is worth mentioning that the Ally is substantially more powerful and also power hungry but that's a topic for another video.
Can you dual boot in the same internal ssd w steam os???
big question, can I configure the back buttons on this OS? I tend to them as substitutes for thumbstick clicks (especially for running).
will there be a update for performance or fixes or improvements?
@largefriendlyloop hey I got a question I’m planning to change the drive if it has nothing in it can I format to set it as the main memory for the windeckos?
is good idea install the updates of windows in this version or is better leaving the windeckos how is coming?
This sounds amazing! Will there be an alternative version to this, that will be supported on computer desktops or laptops, unless of course this can already work like one or there is another that can be used instead? I have so much trouble using Linux, but I've also been fed up with Microsoft's BS, so something like this may potentially be the solution I need for more than just my Steam Deck.
NEVER use a custom Windows ISO on any device you use for anything serious (no further explanation required). He also said this version is “legal” only because of the small screen size. with that being said, there’s no reason why Linux mint, manjaro or Pop OS couldn’t fill your personal computing needs.
@@John3_16_ I see. Unfortunately, I've already installed it on my Steam Deck, because I liked the idea of proper game compatibility. But even though I never activated this version of Windows, I guess I might need to take your word and restore it back to its default setup. The thing is that I tried giving Linux a shot on my laptop and had an all round poor experience, not just because of lack of game compatibility and lack of sources for workarounds, but also because of technical problems, constant errors and painful hurdles from simple things like trying to install a software from github. The latter wasn't so much an issue on the Steam Deck, but it was when trying to setup Zorin or Mint on my laptop. I will consider switching back to Steam OS on my Steam Deck, but considering I've had so many issues with running Linux on my computer, for that I will stick with Windows 10 for now.
I know you recommend installing it to the internal but do you think you could make a video for making it boot from the SD card. If not maybe you have an idea on what im doing wrong I tried doing it myself but once I clicked finish on the recover part it gives me an error msg "error 0"
tried installing this, no format option is available, only next since i already deleted all the partitions, except my internal ssd on the steam deck..is it okay to continur installing?
Q: The Wi-Fi Icon in Steam is greyed-out & the Steam Internet-Settings says "Not Connected" (even tho it is & works) but in Windows-Settings it says "Connected", is there a Fix for that?
this looks wondeful but will i be able to set it back to steam os? in case like i do it wrong or just don't jive with it like i think i will?
Does non steam games work with the steam deck controls? Im asking mainy because i would be downloading emudeck for windows to play some of my roms
This is amazing! Thank you.
If you wouldn’t mind, can you create a tutorial on how to dual boot WinDeckOS and SteamOS please?
This would be huge! Subscribing to see this
Thats exactly what I want too... With my new 1Tb ssd , 500Gb for Windows an another 500Gb por Steam Os
yeah im still waiting
I don't think there currently is a "good" way due to how SteamOS uses the entire SSD and how Windows likes to take over the boot process on updates.
Normally you would install Linux after Windows because of the bootloader issue; but SteamOS doesn't install like other Linux distros, it formats the entire drive and gives you no options. This is mostly an issue with SteamOS that Valve may or may not eventually fix.
Hello there! How are ya? Just had a tini tiny question, how do I make it run windows 10 instead of windows 11? If you can even do that to begin with. Please and thank you
so theoretically, I can install windows on Desktop with a screen recognized as 9 inches or below, and it should activate?
hey man e question. you created it only for the deck, or.... in theory it's possible to run on other pc handhelds? like ally or legion?
It is, you could even put it in a laptop if you really wanted
How will we be able to update the OS if there are important Windows update in the future? In relation to this, how do you update the drivers manually?
I do wonder if you would also skip licensing if you install this on a device with bigger screen than 9 inches or whatever the cutoff point was (but possible it will be very bad to try and use this on anything else than a Steam Deck).
Is it possible for a tutorial for those of us that already have a dual boot Steam Deck setup?
Is it possible to intall this on a steamdeck with windows already on it and still keep the orginal data ?
Or will it need a complete wipe ?
Are you able to make a video on how to do this is a current version of windows 10?
Hey I just installed. everything looks great, but I can’t use the built in mic for voice input. Do you have a way to fix this?
My steam deck should arrive tomorrow or the day after I might get this
Thanks so much
What about gamescope / FSR? The ability to spoof lower resolution and upscale is critical IMO.
