Some of the questions this guy asked are just… yikes. He was a bit patronizing throughout the entirety of this interview (I genuinely don’t believe it was a conscious effort of his), but there were a few questions and comments that really were rather insensitive. Saying things like, “Do you like having autism?” and then following the question up with, “I’m a little jealous… because you’re so carefree and happy, and like, your smile…” First of all, what does his smile have to do with his autism? I mean, I don’t even know where to begin with both the question and the comment. How would it have come across had he asked someone with a physical disability if they like being say… paralyzed, blind, or deaf? Not great. Now imagine him following up the question by saying that he’s jealous of their disability. He is basically insinuating his jealously is because their disability prohibits them from doing the things that he doesn’t like having to do. Can you imagine him saying, “I’m a little jealous… because you’re so carefree and happy, and like, your chair…” to a person who uses a wheelchair for their mobility. I get the compassion is not perfect, but my point is about having a disability, not which disability.
By saying that Subodh is always happy and carefree and smiling, he is insinuating that he thinks that people with autism don’t have the same emotional range and capacity that neurotypical individuals have. I don’t know, that whole situation made me cringe and feel icky.
I’m sure some will say I am reading too far into it, but his job is interviewing a range of different people with different demographics who have varying perspectives, interests, and with unique lived experiences. I also understand that he “doesn’t have anyone in his life that has autism”, but if your job is to be an interviewer, then your job is also to research, develop, and prepare insightful and relative questions beforehand so that each interview is individualized, appropriate, and mindful. A lot of this interview felt as though much of the uniqueness that comes with communicating mindfully, effectively, and intentionally with someone who has autism wasn’t taken into account. And it should have been. I don’t know, maybe it’s just me, and probably it’s because I have people very close to me with autism that it struck a nerve.
I think you're right that it wasn't intentional and was probably due to Derek's inexperience with the community, but I agree with your assessment of the interview. I work pretty closely with the autistic community, though, so it can be jarring to see how behind the general public is on understanding autism and how to interact with autistic people. Again, this isn't a specific dig on Derek, but it would be helpful for everyone to be more educated on the community--particularly because autism research has been making great strides in recent years, with a lot of the research being led by autistic people themselves.

30 is still young. Your 20s are for fucking up and learning lessons, your 30s are when you actually start putting everything you've learned into play and your 40s and beyond are when you can start enjoying what you built during your 30s. As long as you take care of your physical health, you can still have all the fun and adventure your body can handle. And trust me (I recently turned 35), the fun you have in your 30s is much more fun than the fun you had in your 20s because as time goes on, you give less and less shits about unimportant stuff that would have stressed you out or held you back in your 20s, and at the same time you develop a deeper sense of gratitude (which automatically makes life more awesome).
