    not sure if this is the case for all orgo classes but in mine we can also name "4-bromo-3-methoxy-2-pentanol" as "4-bromo-3-methoxypentan-2-ol" so that it's clear in the name where the hydroxyl group is located on the compound. fyi, both are right but my professor just prefers the second way!

      2nd one should be preferred cause the first one is not applicable when unsaturation comes.

      The first one is old IUPAC naming system, on the other hand the second is written using the newer version (given by IUPAC) of naming system.

      ​@@ethanchen4504 In India, highschool students generally use these lectures for their competitive exams , for example am in 11th grade , and studying this to build my base. Then we have to study even more advanced things. Some common exams are JEE INPhO INChO RMO INMO NEET etc.

      What's the longest chain? It's ethane, so it should be methoxy ethane because the methyl group acts as a substituent.

    You said alcohol takes precedence over an ether in naming... but how do you know? What if they give a question including other hydrocarbon derivatives with an ether... how do I know which one takes precedence over another in terms of order of naming???

      The OH group changes the suffix to -ol. When you have high priority group like OH groups you can’t name it as -ane

    I don’t understand… how do you know if something is methoxy ethane or if it’s ethoxy methane? Because isn’t it the same thing?

      The side which has the smaller number of carbon will become the alkoxy group. While the other side will become the base chain or parent chainm

    What if you have subs on both sides of your ether? How do u name it? For example, I have on the left 1-ethyl -2 methyl propyl and the right side has 1,3 dimethyl propyl ...? What would be the correct name for it?

      Nope. Di, tri, tetra... so on is not included. Only those that include in alphabetical prefixes are iso, cyclo, forgot the rest hehe

    I'm sorry but for the IUPAC name of ethyl isopropyl ether, shouldn't it be 2-ethoxyisopropane?

      My book teaches it that way. Basically, chemist dont always agree and you should probably just follow whichever method your professor taught you. I think multiple answers are valid for writing the name out, but on multiple choice you could see either one.

      Alcohol is a functional group and hence it is used as a functional group here and the compound name ends with "ol". Although I'd like to point out that in latest IUPAC nomenclature , real answer would be '4-bromo-3-methoxy pentan-2-ol'
