  • When his mother began talking about putting a prefab in her backyard, Caspar Schols- a physicist by training- was working at a tech firm, but had always loved architecture and asked if he could design her something special.
    Wanting to create a home that you could change as easily as you change your clothes, Schols built the home in a series of shells on a wooden platform. The outer layer is insulated wood panels that slide open to reveal a glass greenhouse pavilion for hanging out or entertaining on colder days. The glass shell can also be rolled back to create an open-air dining, lounging or performance space. With more rolling, one can create other configurations, like the dinner party mode (wood in the middle, glass on the outside to create a covered space to fit a long table and 30 guests).
    With no architecture training (at the time), Schols spent 8 months building the structure himself (with occasional help from family and friends). He set each shell on 8 small wheels that fit into tracks in a wooden platform. Into the floor, he built-in pop-up beds and cabinets to hide outlets and he even had plans for a pop-out bathtub. Though after his mother and guests slept on the pop-up beds a few times they deemed them uncomfortable and he replaced them with furniture from the neighbor (who just happens to be designer Piet Hein Eek).

      So much architecture is cheap pre-fab shit these days though.
      I'm honestly confused as to why saving money also happens to look hideous and have horrible taste almost all the time.
      It's clearly low-effort. I dunno, I did physics man, it's very high effort stuff. It's hard work in that you have to work smarter, harder and longer to succeed.

      I'm just a common man, but there's one thing I know. People that put things down on paper never understand how it will actually work in practice. As Robert said, it's not practical. It's built too close to the ground and as soon as the night comes and the dew hits the ground the wood will swell and the rollers will hang. If that doesn't happen, the ground will freeze and heave, also causing the rollers to hang.
      The only place it might stand a chance of lasting and working as designed is if it's build in a dry climate.
      But why build it to start with. It would be easier and less prone to problems to glass in one end of the platform and leave the other end open. Then you would have all three without the unnecessary extra hardware.
      And by what logic is wasting what appears to be about 700 sq. ft. of space a good idea?

      What if the wooden sides that have doors in it, had a double wall, 3 feet / 1 meter apart, to hide these facilities? One end would host the toilet and bath with a shower, and their doors would open into the outside-door-hallway. The other end had a double outside door with storage walls to make it a tiny mudroom and keep the inside temperature warm in winter. The rest of that outside wall would host the kitchen and washingmachine, hung on the outside wall, not closed off towards the central space.

Does water get blown in a bit? Also: How about just opening a single window for ventilation? Possible? Or does one always have to shove one of the glass units open?

    Great concept, lots of issues from a practical standpoint, but I applaud the effort.
    Problems that need solving:
    1) Climate control: This structure will get incredibly hot in the summer and/or cold in the winter depending on it's latitude. The insulation in the outer shell appears to be very thin - a couple of inches at most. You might get R-6 or so out of it. Current California building codes call for R-32 in roofs and R-19 in walls - this leads to the need for a foot or more of insulation in the roof - even using the most efficient polyiso rigid systems. Walls require 4 to 5 inches of insulation, minimum. The structure will also be drafty as the rolling walls do not seal tightly with the floor. Heating and air-conditioning would all need to come from the floor.
    2) Electrical and plumbing: Fixed, closed cavity walls are typically used for plumbing and electrical distribution. This can be solved by running these services through the floor, but that presents it's own problems. Electrical outlets placed in floors suck. They present a tripping hazard and get fouled with dirt quickly. Don't spill anything either.
    3) Wind loading and uplift: Having the shell on rollers is great for flexibility or spatial configuration, but if you are located in area prone to high winds, your building is gonna blow-away when the first storm hits.
    4) Waterproofing: Placing a split both in the roof and in the glass shell it protects is problematic. It's hard to tell from video, but at the very least, the two discontinuities need to be offset to prevent water ingress. During storms, water does strange things, driven by pressure differentials between interior and exterior created by wind. It can and will migrate through the seam between roofs, and capillary action will cause it to spread on the underside and drip in unpredictable ways unless carefully detailed.
    5) The glass roof is beautiful, but requires careful detailing for structural soundness. It must also be laminated safety glass. Keeping it clean will be a challenge.
    I say all of this to encourage others who find this as inspiring as I do to carefully consider the practical issues that go along with building habitable structures. If the building ends up collapsing, leaking, blowing away, or is freezing in the winter and sweltering in the summer, and full of insects and vermin because of poor weatherproofing, it will be a nightmare. Worse, people will mock it and experimental architecture in general, discouraging future attempts at innovative design.
    I recommend working with an architect who's trained and experienced in solving the sorts of problems I've listed above. You'd never get a building permit where I live for this structure as it sits, and as an licensed architect myself, I deal with clients in trouble with the city for building without a permit all the time. Building codes are complex and can be expensive and frustrating and limiting, but they exist for some very good reasons. They are why a 5.0 or even a 7.0 earthquake in California rarely kills anyone, whereas tens of thousands die in places like Iran and Mexico when they are struck by similar disasters.

    • @westend3019
      @westend3019 6 лет назад +1

      For the sake of an adequate shake-out of typical problems in some environs, your comments are appreciated. Not all owners would either like the concept or could be inconvenienced by the weather concerns. The remaining engineering could be rather easily dealt with, IMO. Note: The builder did incorporate a gasketing system inboard of the travel rails. Your admonitions about keeping the glass spotless is noted, a temper of the owner could dictate that. I know folks that never clean their easy-to-access windows. I enjoy looking at different home architecture. I am a retired Residential Building Contractor so have had my hands on some unique construction. I live on the 45th parallel, inland, so have grown a deep appreciation for trying to emulate Mother Nature. In my area, a building would have to be robustly insulated to be an efficient Winter home. If building in settled areas, codes need to be met. The application to a pre-fabricated structure with different modifications might have a lot of merit.

    • @amwphotos
      @amwphotos 6 лет назад +5

      I can answer most of your questions and I'm not an architect.
      It's a cabin. It is not a house. Therefore you don't need to worry about California building r numbers, or convenience of power outlets. It doesn't need heating/cooling it's a cabin, light the stove or open the roof.

    • @wienerwoods
      @wienerwoods 6 лет назад +2

      Well, I am a licensed architect in California, and I'm not aware of any exceptions for "cabins" in the Residential or Green Building portions of Title 24. If one exists, do me a favor and post the code section, because, man, that would save a LOT of money on construction.....Every jurisdiction I've worked in requires full title 24 compliance for any habitable structure. The only grey area might be RVs - if the dwelling is resisted with the state as a vehicle, like a motor-home or a trailer, you are exempt from energy efficiency requirements. That's why the cheapest way to "build a cabin" up in the mountains or out in the desert is to find an unincorporated are with no planning or zoning codes, and then simply park a trailer or motor-home there. You see a lot of this out in the desert, often abandoned, because, well, it kinda sucks living in the desert in a poorly insulated RV, lol...
      You still have to deal with things like electrical service, fresh water, and sewage disposal at a minimum. Provisioning, storage and preparation of food is another chore in these areas, which tend to be remote.
      All of these issues can be dealt with - composting toilets for sewage, solar and wind generators for energy, commercial water delivery or wells, but all that stuff costs money and/or requires ongoing maintenance.
      The cabin above is a nice prototype / test bench for what I'd call "adaptive architecture" It's a great concept - building's that change form in response to environmental conditions. It's not ready for mass adoption in it's current form, but that's OK - The purpose of prototyping is proof of concept and and generating excitement about an idea. The problems associated with this are technical, and thus can be solved - but they have to be addressed. Codes can be changed to allow exceptions or trade-offs, but that is an extremely costly and time consuming process. You will often be fighting political interests like trade unions trying to protect traditional construction methods to protect their jobs. Residential construction is one of the biggest industries in America, and thus a lot of very powerful groups have a vested interest in the status quo, and building codes are one way they protect them.
      For instance, power companies have fought roof-top solar energy for decades and net metering, because it's a threat to their monopoly on power generation and distribution.
      So whenever you see some new building approach that seems to hacked the existing system, it's generally either bogus or impractical. I don't say this to rain on anyone's parade, just to make sure people understand what's involved in changing things, and why we have the sorts of housing we have currently. It's not from a lack of ideas, it's from a lack of realistic planning when implementing them.

    • @FurnitureFan
      @FurnitureFan 5 лет назад +7

      Seasoned wood is probably less prone to warping? I mean, metal expands and contracts too, so the tolerances just need to be figured out.
      I would be more concerned with choosing the right type of glass; shatterproof and resilient, with a couple of spare panels under the floors just in case. If anyone is considering this beautiful design, please don't use ordinary window glass for your project.
      I say this because in my country, in old cottages, people have been fatally injured by loose slates dropping from the roof, so it's important to have safety glass overhead. Also, when we were children, our glass front door once swung back. My sister put her arm up to catch it. Her arm went through the glass and severed a blood vessel. Luckily, my cousin knew how to apply a tourniquet, and the ambulance arrived quickly.
