I like great examples of all whisky styles... For example, I love peated whisky, and am often not a fan of wine finishes and sherry maturation, BUT when a good peated whisky is balanced by a sherry, or port, or wine finish that can put me in orbit! I have learned to appreciate all kinds of whisky over time, and I'm at the point where I buy things that I have never tried, or I pick up a favorite that I ran out of... Last night, I picked up a bottle of Cutty Sark Prohibition just because I didn't have one at home... Lower prices always make the decisions easier :)

Another great video Alan, great to kick off not only a discussion but make me think about the habits and behaviours decisions I take in what I purchase and enjoy. Lots of questions and it raised lots of thinking and analysis. Too much for one reply....
Havnt really spent over ~£80 yet as still building my understanding or preferences and palate, sampling lots of different regions/options. Buy from a wide source helped by various video review channels or web/written reviews (pick what I want then source from cheapest - always a wee discount somewhere 😁) or preferred delivery method. That's means local retailers/supermarkets such as e.g. Waitrose/Sainsbury (limited but useful selections and discounts sometimes), throught to the online e.g. TWE or Amazon UK etc.). Currently favouring from heavier sherry influenced bottles, age statement, NCF, NC where possible (like the consumer clarity/honesty) but still will purchase a NAS where it's a quality product/intrigues me... e.g. bought Gg Legacy . Glendronnoch/Glengoyne (loving the 18) doing it for me currently (still a big Deanston fan though) p.s. bought the Ab Abunadh batch62 recently but it has disappointed so far. If venturing more expensive out with the brand families I know and enjoy, prob buy a sample though as you do often - good tip). So..... love a well made, 43/46% min ideally, quality bottle, but can still enjoy a Glenfiddoch 12 or a Monkey Shoulder at times when the mood takes me.

Your (what's on view) collection is making me drool, Alan! :)
Personally, my budget is fairly small for Whisky buying and drinking, so thus far I'm only buying maybe 1-2 bottles per month, and drinking/enjoying it all slowly. I've found some favourites, but as I'm still relatively new on my journey, I'm exploring, and rarely buy the same bottle twice. I started with Laphroaig 10 years ago, but the past few bottles I've purchased, for example have been: Bunnahabhain Moine, Longrow Peated, Springbank 12CS, Hibiki Harmony (Master's Select), Laphroaig Lore, Glencadam 13 'The Reawakening', and Longmorn 16. I've watched a heap of RUclipsrs and their reviews over the past 6 months, just to learn and see what is well regarded, but maybe a bit out of the norm of the big names most people know.
Kilkerran is a bottle I bought late last year and absolutely love! Saw it's also one of your faves. That is one I will be buying again. Just hit the spot for me at the time, taste wise. I like most of what I've bought, though obviously some more than others, and am slowly finding my preferences. A Fino Sherry aged The Arran is maybe the only bottle I've bought I was a bit unhappy with... 54.2% and very thin and sharp. Had to work hard at that, and still enough left in the bottle. I spoke with a fine chap from The Arran distillery at a Whisky Fair here in Gothenburg last month who understood what I was talking about with that Fino Sherry bottle Arran. To leave me with a better impression of The Arran, he gave me a free sample of the 20yo Brodick Bay Arran... and holy hell... what a superb Whisky! Only tried a couple of Arran's now, but I've long been a fan of their look and design, and the visual appeal has drawn me to them.
Went to the Ardbeg Embassy (great Whisky bar) in Stockholm back in January too and made quite the night of it by lining up 10 samples to work through. I'd done my homework beforehand, so knew what I wanted to try. Loved them all, but a couple I could have left. The Glendronach 18 and Ardbeg Dark Cove were favourites. Can't seem to find or order a Glendronach 18 here so far.
As you may know, Sweden has a state monopoly on liquor. Price wise though, it's not too bad! Actually a fair bit cheaper than prices back in Australia, and even when I compare some bottles to Masters of Malt etc, they're much the same, or a few on the cheaper side. So it's only the few bottles I can't seem to find or order here that I'll look elsewhere for. I picked up the Clynelish 14 a couple of years ago in Berlin, and a Green Spot and Nikka Coffey Malt in Berlin earlier this year as well.
I like Peat, but also Speyside bottles, and currently finding the Campbeltown stuff my jam! I just want to try it all :)
The trick is in trying to buy it faster than I drink it, so I can build my collection a little...
The pop on that Glengoyne was perfect!
Looking forward to seeing your channel continue to grow.

Another great video. Your reviews are refreshing for the soul. I loved your Glencadam series. I would say I seek out higher abvs, natural color, and a craft presentation. However, I don’t spurn certain whiskies such as Dalmore if I can find them at a good price. Right now the Glenallarchie 10 Cask Strength is my go to whisky, and at only $60 it is a bargain. I love Billy Walker. He is truly a master craftsman.

Awesome collection Alan. My whisky buying is 4-fold I would say. 1. It's seasonal because I prefer sherry when it's warm or hot and peat during the winter. 2. It depends on whether I go to my local store or the big store in Dallas because my local store does not have many scotches, so I tend to buy bourbon. 3. I always try to buy from a distillery I haven't tried. and 4. I will almost always grab a cask strength scotch over anything else. Cheers.

Alan love the new shelves and whisky display. The main reason for me what and why I love whisky is that they are so different from each other. I have only 66 closed bottles and around 10 open bottles at the moment love Glengoyne, Tamdhu, Ardbeg and Compass Box and Cask strength batches. Have a great whisky shop near me so can sample before I buy but enjoy the auctions also. Well done for the 350

Hi Alan I do not drink at home but am lucky enough to be able to buy some bottles of whisky for my fiance's dad's pub.
I will buy from wherever I find cheapest as I keep to a limit of £40 on average a bottle , as he prices his malt whisky the same across the board.
I like to get a range of peated / sherry / Irish / wild turkey 101 / and a wildcard often east coast highland and replace as and when required.
I will usually have 4 or 5 in his bar at any time as well as a Glenfiddich or glenmorangie.
I find around £40 you open up to a world of more interesting whisky than the standard supermarket.
Working in London gives me access to a large number of retailers as well as internet options so shopping around is part of the fun for me.
It's good to know there is something interesting awaiting if I pop in of an evening and they are popular with others and shifting well.
    All the best Glynn.

if your up for some fun Glynn is gradually improve the range of whiskies in the bar, i would maybe have 2 prices your current range and maybe a new 4 bottles at a higher cost....not a big difference...you can pick up supper bottles for £40...glendronach 12, ardbeg 10, deanston 12 and bunnahabhain 12....for a tad more you could get Clynelish 14 benriach peated quarter casks etc.....before you know it you will have your very own whisky bar my friend...cheers buddy

Great video Alan! My buying decisions are mostly just driven by curiosity now. At first, I was guided more by price range (tried to stay under $60 a bottle) & paid close attention to what the different whisky reviews said. Now that I’ve got a bit more of my own experiences to draw on, I’ve basically learned I enjoy all scotch depending on my mood! 😂 So I tend to just pick up anything that peaks my curiosity that I haven’t tried yet. A few standards (Old pulteney 12, Quinta Ruban, Lagavulin 16) get replenished now & again also. I definitely do have favorite distilleries/brands but I really am open to anything since there are so so many good whiskies out there to explore and enjoy.

Great work Alan, I'm really enjoying the channel. For me whiskey is all about the taste at its price point, and I drink all price points within reason. If a particular bottle is 5 times the price of an entry level but then I discover that it has 5 times the nose, flavour and depth then that's all good and is money well spent (but I'll try to make that bottle last!). I enjoy the variety of it... Sort of like having a box of chocolates and picking out the one that suits your mood on a given day. I predominantly buy Irish because I'm from Dublin and that's what's mostly available here but Speyside Whisky is intriguing me now too. I suppose I just love finding those hidden gems that I never knew about. The hunt continues... Slainte, Ronan.

A good topic Alan! You're really on to something as buying whiskeys is potentially complex, especially when people are still figuring out their own palates. For me buying whiskey has gone through several phases. 15 years ago I picked up Michael Jackson's books on whiskey and went with his recommendations--Macallan 12, 18, Talisker 10, Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16 and my favorite, Nikka Yoichi 10. I never got used to the peated ones, though I tried many times. My recent return to whiskey was initially though sherried ones--GlenDronach, Balvenie, Aberlour, and Glengoyne, but more recently I have become interested in Bourbon Casks that feature the distillery character. Love Arran, Springbank, and Old Pulteney, many of which have been introduced to me through the RUclips whiskey community. I'm pretty much open to different regions and styles (will give Islay a try again in time), something that I probably picked up from craft beer and wine tastings.

    • @thewhiskyfriend
      @thewhiskyfriend  5 лет назад +1

Thanks Alan, im a sherry man, but i enjoy bourbon casks and also peated whiskies but it was not always the case...made some buying errors hence the complexity of it all...sorry about the error as i planned it as a premiere but looks like the new youtube is not allowing me to do them, or it might be me ...hope you enjoyed it hope it was not too long and the Glengoyne 25 is awesome and your now in the hat my friend...

Hi Alan, I guess my whisky experience is the opposite way round to yours, as i was drinking whisky for years and only started collecting more recently. My collection is based on vintage as I’m trying to collect a bottle of single malt scotch from each year since my birth year (1971). It’s getting increasingly more difficult and expensive especially with the earlier years, but that makes it all the more fun. All the best mate and keep up with the great videos.

I started solidly in Speyside and at £25 a bottle unaware of chill filtration etc, and favoured Aberlour. As I have widened my tastes (around 100 bottles) I still stick to distilleries I know I like to try to get their core range, but also shop on price by waiting for offers to come up. It really is a medley of all you outlined. 😜

Glengoyne 25 is my dream bottle to buy! Have to be strict with myself and not spend that money on something cheaper in the short term and put myself back to square one! Fantastic content as always! Funny to see you have out-grown the shed already! Take care mate!

Great video as always. For me I try as many whisky's as possible, whilst I have preference for sherry, I'm finding that some of the wine/brandy/port cask finishes are really adding something different. For me though I like to support the smaller distilleries where possible. Price does play a factor as well, and I look around before finally pressing the buy button. The Glengoyne 25 is a lovely dram but at the price its out of my range.

Hi Alan, I don't really buy according to these criterias...I'll say there is a first category which would be first distilleries or indie bottlers i follow for a long time & do consider there doesn"t seem to be a decrease of quality over time, at least for some expressions/ranges or special releases, and another one could be bargain opportunities on bottlings I've only tasted on shows or through samples & that are on my wishlist (or not-it can also happen), then (to put a long story short) I'll say also distilleries I'm interested in but do not have yet in my collection...
I focus mainly on Scotch but I'm curious of many other countries productions (so yes I'm also a Bourbon & Rye lover, for instance).I'm also interested in blended whiskies (often overlooked) & blended malts and do not forget the category, price tag, style these whiskies are part of...(...). Got also some gifts like you for sure for long time, but not always those I want, lol...I tend more recently to purchase also whiskies that have profiles that should (not a certainty though) not move too bad over time...(...). I do swap samples because prices are getting too expensive...don't wanna buy afterwards whiskies I could regret if not tasted before..../ I buy non age statements if I taste them before & approve them....in fact got not prejudice or criterias preventing for buying a whisky unless got bad experiences about them...
As prices go high now I tend not to buy whiskies I haven"t tasted before and of course upper a certain price...(so expensive exceptions are getting rare too). Some of questions you ask are too sensitive though for a public answer, lol....Cheers !

Well hello there friend, it's me Jerry and welcome to my premier comment for today. Had to change my name from my usual handle "JK Hobs" which I wouldn't do for just anybody nor for just any whisk(e)y. However, as you know from past posts, I really enjoy your reviews, Glengoyne is my favorite distiller and the 25yo is currently missing from my collection. Great review here and have being loving the other recent videos filmed with your new shelving displays behind you. As far as my whisk(e)y buying is concerned, there is a fair amount that I purchase based strictly on recommendations from folks like you. After hearing your breakdown of the taste profile of the spirit, I decide whether that description fits my specific criteria for enjoying a dram. If it does and don't already have it, I go find it. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this video. Finally, if you wouldn't mind, please contact me at 'jkhobs@hotmail.com' , I like to discuss something with you offline. Cheers!

I just watched your video on glengoyne 25 year old, I haven't been able to buy a bottle 🍼 because of the price, it's $600 a bottle where I live. I don't know how old the video is but I would like to be entered into the giveaway of the samples you are giving away, I live in New Mexico USA and you can send whiskey to this state, if this is not a recent video and giveaway then please disregard this message. Firstly congrats on your upcoming wedding my friend.... For me the perfect whisky would be the Glengoyne 25 fella... But a couple of alternatives would be a Edradour 12 single cask in the ibisco decanter or the arran 24 from nicholls and perks fantastic value at £195....hope this helps and best wishies to you both... Cheers Al..

ok my friend, why do you do that?...an example of a bottle that has none of that is Lagavulin 16, its chill filtered its colour added and its 43% abv....and its fantastic...im a firm believer that its all about the whisky, the cask, the reason behind my video was to show that there are many ways to buy whisky...cheers buddy...where are you from....i hope i can send whisky to you sir

the whisky friend , I’m from the Philippines. I agree with Lagavulin 16. I’ve had many bottles of it, don’t get me wrong. But, for the bunker I like to stock pile the higher proof bottles like the 8,12 or other limited editions. Only because I know if I want the 16, I can buy it anytime. Always available and I usually have a bottle in my bar.
