An interesting thing about Swaziland that I'm surprised you didn't mention was that it recently changed its name officially to eSwatini (yes I know it's a weird spelling) because the king decreed it so (I know this comment wasn't about mispronunciation, I just thought it was interesting) :)

@@beegnutz Understandable. They got their independence 1993 after a 30 years running independence war alone against Ethiopia and their allies, which were powers like USA, Soviet Union, Kuba, Israel, (East-)Germany etc. So their war and success was until recent years never a good press in the homelands of the big powers and hidden. Adding to that it needed always some years, after everybody actualized their maps, map books etc, so I was as an Eritrean always fed up, when we used maps in 1999 in the German school, which were released 1990...

The reign of Moshoeshoe of the Basotho was pretty amazing actually. He had this fortress on top of a mountain called Thaba Bosiu and ruled over a large area. He started modernising as he was one of the few african leaders to realise that he had no hope of defeating the colonists without modern weapons. So he invited missionaries to teach his people mathematics and more effective farmung techniques. He even had a whole cavalry unit armed with modern rifles. He took to dressing in a suit as well as his native garb. He actually managed to keep the boet trekkers at bay for thirty years until he grew old and weak. His sons started fighting for the kingdom and he realised this would weaken them and they wouldn't be able to resist the boers any longer so rather than let this happen he applied to become a protectorate of Britain retaining some independence which was better than having his whole country flooded with white settlers.

I'm from Swaziland (is now called eSwatini (the land that belongs to the Swazis) pronounced ehh-swa-t-dini) and it most definitely isn't Zulu. Back in the day tribes that ruled of Southern Africa, stretching as far as Tanzania. The link can be shown through the languages "Bantu" languages, they are very different but share similar meanings and sound the same... Anyway, eSwatini's main languages are English and Siswati (which is similar to Zulu but belongs to a different tribe). eSwatini's land was taken away by the British through tricking the then King to sign off the land, know though Swazi land is used but South Africa and Mozambique but the Swazis who do live there speak Siswati and the countries recognise that the land they use is originally Swazi. African history varies from country to country but is very rich, but it's to think that colonization has erased the history and placed their own narrative on it. You can probably make a whole series on Swazi history alone.

One reason I might not know (or I forget) the NAMES of the countries is that I'm old and learned about these places as colonies or young states before they changed their names, sometimes changing back to older names... Botswana (Bechuanaland), Namibia (SW Africa), Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), Benin (Dahomey), Burkina Faso (Upper Volta), Malawi (Nyasaland), Tanzania (Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Congo (Belgian Congo, then Zaire, and back; now making two countries named Congo), Djibouti (French Somaliland), Ghana (Gold Coast), just to name a few. But I can never remember what Zambia used to be called...? Anyway, the area is still in flux after centuries of colonization, so no wonder there's still confusion.

In my country, the team made our national soccer team bay for revenge for over 10 years after suffering a humiliating 12-0 defeat. (Botswana's mediocre national team the zebras)
Upon reflection, I realized that being in the SADC region means that I am way more likely to have heard of Madagascar. So anyone in the country who knows other countries than Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa here, has heard of Mauritius.

Barotseland is an unrecognized kingdom between Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia and Angola. It is the homeland of the Lozi people or Barotse,[1] or Malozi, who are a unified group of over 20 individual formerly diverse tribes related through kinship, whose original branch are the Luyi (Maluyi), and also assimilated Southern Sotho tribe of South Africa known as the Makololo.
