The reign of Moshoeshoe of the Basotho was pretty amazing actually. He had this fortress on top of a mountain called Thaba Bosiu and ruled over a large area. He started modernising as he was one of the few african leaders to realise that he had no hope of defeating the colonists without modern weapons. So he invited missionaries to teach his people mathematics and more effective farmung techniques. He even had a whole cavalry unit armed with modern rifles. He took to dressing in a suit as well as his native garb. He actually managed to keep the boet trekkers at bay for thirty years until he grew old and weak. His sons started fighting for the kingdom and he realised this would weaken them and they wouldn't be able to resist the boers any longer so rather than let this happen he applied to become a protectorate of Britain retaining some independence which was better than having his whole country flooded with white settlers.
