  • @Gordon_L

    Al , your choice of course but I would build the barn off the end of the house where you park the cars , maybe 10 - 15 feet out , concrete floor throughout , make it a combined garage for the cars , workshop and room for animals on one side . Your cars are worth thousands of dollars and are suffering in the elements plus the time spent de-icing each day in the winter months , also scratching the paintwork . Close to the house means easy extension of services ( electricity , water ) and it would be easy to add a covered tunnel between barn and house so moving people and shopping between cars and house is a dry affair in inclement weather .
    In my mind , that would maximise the benefit of this barn and get best bang for buck . All the best as always , wish you all well :-)

      Excellent suggestion and so much more practical. I hope Al reconsiders where he places the barn also.

    Maybe closer to the house would make it easier to run water/power to the barn Al. Just something else to consider. Also can't wait to see the worms!

    • @frankdeegan8974
      @frankdeegan8974 5 лет назад

      There are countless books and plans and things to consider when constructing and laying out the farm buildings such as driveways prevailing winds drainage access to pasture and other fields yes many factors to think about. Will you be able to use the tractor to clean out the stalls and pens the goats hooves will pack the manure rock hard, you already know how hard the chickens can pack the manure even with feeding them the way you do. A tractor is way easier than a grub hoe, don't ask me how I know.
      Yes on the windows very few barns have enough day light you can not have enough windows in a barn, the animals need the day light during the long winters just as people do. Your chickens if you want to keep up egg production you must have lights on a timer to give them more light hours, the other animals usually don't require longer hours of light.

    I am looking forward to winter (Queensland, Australia) I have had enough of summer. Everyday 90 -110F wears you down, especially as I live in a older home without air con. Winter provides some relief, even if our winter is very mild. 41F is the coldest I have experienced here, that was mid winter at night. However during the day you can wear tshirt and jeans - so not really a 'real' winter.

      I'm with you there sister. Although we do get cold winters, it's not cold enough for snow but we are melting in South Australia here. We've had around 5mm of rain in about 6 months. Water tanks are almost dry. I think you Queenslanders stole all our water this year! LOL.

    Gooooood mawning! Can’t wait to watch the barn build. If I can offer suggestions learned after building our pole barn. Build it on a high spot so you get better drainage and hopefully less mud. Take notice of where your cold winter winds blow from, you may not want to face your door in that direction. We also opted to put large sliding barn doors on the back too. Best decision ever. Gives you drive through capability and really allows a nice breeze to blow through in the summer with lots of light. And one more suggestion, I’d put it closer to the house. You’ll eventually want water and electricity in the barn, so it’s a cost factor to run it a long distance, not to mention your winter trekks through the snow. We regret we didn’t cement the floor in the main part of the barn, or put in a loft, so good decision there. After seeing your building skills, you’ve got this. 👍

    • @chris3m98
      @chris3m98 5 лет назад +1

      All VERY good suggestions-The back doors will save you many steps! If you never use them it still is a good idea for a summer breeze!

    If you can try to make pen panels that you can remove if you need to. My cattle barn had panels that hung on pinned hinges and it allowed me to take all the stall dividers out so I could clean it out with the tractor. It also allowed for more flexible pens, there are some excellent sheep panel systems on the market that might give you ideas. It’s awesome to see your excitement and the barn design rocks.

    Hey Al, We used to milk our goats and had them all running around together. We never had any tainting of the milk (but the bucks did stink!) What we did was wash the udder really well with a dairy wash. As soon as they were milked, we chilled the milk in the barn fridge while we did other chores. Once inside the house, we strained the milk and chilled it in our fridge. It always tasted superb and no one would've known it was goat milk--not like the horrible goat milk from the stores. That stuff is a real turn-off.

    You should consider adding your (probably oughta be) patented rainwater collection system to the barn. That 960 square feet of catchment should allow you to actually store up some water against a dry spell. I've been wondering when you were going to do that for your goat barn; that would lighten your chores during the warmer months.

Your organization habits are so strong that it’s really very comforting and soothing to be in your environments with you :) The new barn plans look gorgeous and it looks like animals will have great access to the new pasture area. Down at that end of it is likely where your pond will be since the stream is there and the pasture slopes towards it. Your animals will enjoy the easy access to water :-)

    By the time you start the barn make sure you have a long enough Electric cable. A Mains Drill with Hammer action, A Small Mains Drill for pilot holes, A Battery drill with Screw Driver, Long extension Screw Driver Bits and 2 or 3 spare Batteries. It is so much easier if you do not have to keep changing Drills and Bits and you will be surprised how often the longer Bits get into the corners better?

    Your plans sound great for the barn. When you start building it you will be doing a lot of walking back and forth from area to area. It would be great if you had a work quad with dump box for many things there. You would be able to load it with food for each feeding station and continue on your journey without going back to get more. You could use it for travel when building the barn. I am excited to see the barn go up.

    I almost swear I can hear Gina's brain cranking with ideas when your move out date arrives...from the basement that is! No rumors from me:) I remember when Jack built our barn and can still hear how giddy he was when he talked about it. A place for all his tools and our garden supplies and the list went on and on. Al, When I think American farm, I think barn. Yours will be a useful and attractive addition to your homestead. I hope you can work out an early income generator from the barn to strengthen your position. It's certainly going to look good on your land. Kits! Don't be fooled. My friend Franco has just taken delivery of a heavy duty polytunnel. OMG! If I had a degree in aerospace construction I'd be happy 🙂. It took over 2 hours just to check off the bits delivered to the delivery note.... and things missing! The manufacturer reckons it will take us 2 days to build..... not confident. I'm sure it will be wonderful! Good luck with your build. Regards Stephen.

    WOW!! Awesome looking plans - very excited for you and I can tell you are too. Yep, definitely a game changer with a barn. If I can make a small suggestion - extend the concrete slab 6 inches past the outside of the walls with a slight downward slope - it will extend the life of your walls at the base. Without that extension the bottom of your walls will get more moisture (even with the overhangs) and dirt on them. I would also extend the concrete 6-8 ft in the front so you have a landing pad in front of your garage door. I have this on ours and man I'll tell you it becomes a great place to unload things, to work on things outside (I do most of my work there), or to just sit and check out the property with a cold drink. Since you are planning on driving into your barn make I'd put a concrete ramp in the front too. Not only will this make it easier to drive into the barn, but it'll keep the barn cleaner. You could also park the tractor there and hose it off before entering the barn. Anyway those are lessons I've learned with our barn. CANNOT WAIT until yours starts going up and thanks very much in advance for the tour of the factory Al!

    Al the barn plans look amazing, but while you’re at the barn factory give us a tour, maybe you could talk to them how about designing a carport structure to add to your house can you park your pick up and Gina‘s car in for next winter that way you will not have to be shoveling snow off your vehicles when you want to use them, also will help to keep you out of the rain...👍 👍

    Thank you so much for your efforts. Your family’s working together is so edifying. The development of your family is more important than the pigs. 😄

    I can't wait to see your new goat! HOPEfully they all get along! It's always sad to see goats leaving their moms and friends but at least we know she is going to a great home, and we can still see her everyday! I love the chicken idea with all the colorful eggs! I have one Americana that gives me pretty blue. Speaking of chickens, I do have a question about yours; I realize you said they don't like the snow and can't tell depth perception but I was wondering if you can't put a little hay out like you did before just so they can get some of that beautiful sun 🌞 you've been having and fresh air? They must be getting cabin fever too lol.🤪🤒🐔I am so excited for your future videos!!!!! Love your life! Tell Olivia she has to stop getting so big though! Lol she is turning into a beautiful young lady right before our 👀! These videos are going to be awesome for her to look back on. Great memories!💜💙❤💚💛🧡💗💞💖💝❣💕

    Song of the trees:
    Look for branches that are bent over. These are the ones that will break under a heavy snow load. Their naked profiles will tell you which ones will have to be better cut back.
    Hum...do you suppose soil tempreture makes for sap arising? Would black rocks at the foot of the trees act as heat collector's?

    The best place for your barn is high ground. Water will drain away. Our barn was OK, but the chicken pen wasn't. It was in a small drainage area, and was flooded during a summer storm. Several hens drowned.

    I'm so glad to hear that you are going to do a factory tour. That is going to be so interesting to watch. I get nervous watching you on the ladder when it's so slippery. There are so many exciting things going on for you. Can't wait to see it all. Love your videos. Looking forward to them. Why do the hens lay often in one nesting box?? Thanks for another great video.

    I do fabrication work and some of our roof scuttles mount on metal roofs so I have to make ribs that match the profile of the metal roof and there’s some that look a lot like the ridge cap

    Barn will be NICE! For the incubater have you considered using the eggs from the barred rocks? With those roosters in there they should be very fertile.
