My experience with Swiss watches in Japan has not been great on pricing alone, watches are way too overpriced there. I think that nothing comes close to the USA for Swiss watch purchasing, best pricing, best availability and variety.

I agree. Japanese culture is heavy on trust and honor. Bargaining is not in their shopping culture. No price trickery or inflation to cover a fake discount. The price is the price. No haggling. I like that aspect of shopping in Japan. Makes it more enjoyable because you don’t have to worry about playing games with the seller.

I recently ordered a DJ 16233 from Japan to Canada. The dealer was Arbitro vintage watches and I did my negotiations though his Instagram. Everything Austin has said in this video is true. The dealer highlighted every small scratch and did not tilt the watch head as to distort the amount of bracelet stretch. Very pleased and is definitely my go to dealer now

Totally agree, I switched over a few years back because of all these reasons. However, they are pretty keen on polishing which is something to bear in mind! Also has anyone noticed the large numbers of Tudor subs super cheap and made from all sorts of aftermarket parts on Ebay lately? Some of the listings let you know this, others are a fair bit more vague - which seems a little less "Japanese" than normal...

I've bought a Rolex GMT, Sapphire Speedy, and Bvlgari Octo from Japan through Rakuten. All were great experiences. On the GMT I specifically liked that the one I got was grungy and dirty in the photos. That meant that it had not been polished! A little soap and soft toothbrush and it was perfect.

I've been to Japan twice, and bought watches there both times. Since then, I've bought eight more from Japanese dealers and had them shipped to Canada. 100% impressed 100% of the time. As you say in the video, the world has flattened pricing but what the Japanese have is selection and availability. While I've not yet made a trip specifically to buy a watch, it has crossed my mind. I'd recommend anyone spending serious money to go there and shop (I've watch shopped in Kyoto and Tokyo and have been completely overwhelmed).
