The PM orders Bernard to take away Sir Humphrey's key to the door connecting the Cabinet Office to 10 Downing St in order to curtail his meddling. Here is a clip of Sir Humphrey's protest after climbing in through the window.
Some excellent language used. Satire at its best :)
You have to appreciate that Jim’s gotten reasonably good at interpreting Humphrey’s speaking style
I mean, there were considerable contextual clues.
The brilliant thing is that Humphrey's sentence makes perfect sense. He just uses euphemisms and unwieldy synonyms for almost every word in the sentence.
I think sometimes the more upset he gets, the more difficult it gets for him to NOT talk like this. No matter how much he wants to make himself understood at the time.
You should see the Christmas special
@@lonewolf1868 Is that Party Games, where Hacker becomes prime minister? I have that one. Brilliant episode.
You actually understood it. Good.
@@NewhamMatt my favourite but @UCxF3h_3izM6ebCKtnYKvWNw could be referring to the funny side of Christmas 1982. Where he has about 1.5 mins speech and is trying to say merry christmas
One of those moments in the series where the punchline almost broke the audiance XD.
Just saw this episode, it was WONDERFUL seeing Humphrey so unhinged!
+synth on a plinth That's why this episode is one of my favorites.
The true brilliance of this sketch lies in the fact that it was possible to film at all. Paul Eddington was in extreme pain from a rare cancer and Yes Prime Minister relied heavily on amazing actors and skillful camerawork to hide his frequent departures from the studio.
So sad
😶
My God. I had no idea when the first came out how absolutely brilliant it was....The writing, script and acting was nothing short of magnificent...
So dearly missed. God bless them.
Terrific scene from one of my favorite episodes, period. It's so rare to see Jim get the drop on Sir Humphrey...but it happens in this episode. Brilliant!
One of the best lines in one of Uk's best TV series of all times
Perhaps the finest moment of television ever. Brilliant.
brilliant acting... perfect delivery..... nothing i have seen in the last 30 years comes close
Shakespeare has nothing on Sir Humphrey.
Superb! Still makes me laugh after all these years!
It’s the slight and gradual close up which always gets me.
This has to be the best speech he did in the show, other than possibly when Humphrey tried to explain to him that the minister had lied. :,D
Or him believing in government politics, or him explaining why britain is in the EU. Gold right there. There are however plenty of these in the show. Multiple per episode. 1000 refugees in fully staffed hospital approve.
I remember one of the script writers saying in a documentary that they were rather horrified to discover that Nigel Hawthorne still remembered every word of these speeches even long after an episode was taped and aired. "Here is a man with a decent brain", he said, "and we've been filling it with all this junk!"
"Epistemological? What are you talking about?"
A performance like that, he deserved an oscar for it. Very impressive indeed.
Surely the best ever scene in this amazing show!
How on earth did he memorise that!!
he memorized every single speech
This along with Party Games was my favourite episode. Nigel Hawthorne was astonishingly good at delivering his lines. Paul Eddington was excellent too and indeed there were numerous supporting actors who were simply superb, with John Nettleton as Sir Arnold, the Cabinet Secretary particularly standing out in my opinion. The writing of course was spot on.
Arnold the Serpent!
Of all of Sir Humphrey's speeches I think this is his best. I always think though is Sir Humphrey's speech better than Jim's reaction?
Jim's reaction is the cherry on top of Sir Humphrey's speech.
Humphrey in shambles
hahaha the pm is so cool as an ice cube. cheers from India.
That made me laugh so much... oh I miss those days where you actually laugh with them and not at them...
Nigel Hawthorne is magnificent
I ADORE READING
Berkshire??
@@1946nimrod u Berkshire??
That’s where he gets locked out isn’t it?
Sir Humphrey was so used to privilege and power that having to do things like a normal person broke him into pieces.
When Thatcher (a big fan) was allowed to do a short sketch as PM with Paul Eddimgton playing Bernard Woolley - the actors made clear politely they were not fans of her!
One bloke at the end really lost it.
What season and episode is this clip from?

this is a true story based on the 60's goverment
What the hell is he talking?😂😂
That he thinks it's difficult to go between rooms without access to the secret door and that might make his job in government difficult. :D
I protest against new rules that keep me from just walking in to see the Prime Minister. These rules will keep us from talking to each other and make it impossible for us to carry on the business of government.
wow....i watched this 20 yrs ago and didnt understand wtf he was talking about (although i got the joke), now i understand everything he said in one go.
fml .... it must mean i've been hanging with fucking yuppies.
