- A quick look at panela sugar being manufactured at a home in Inzá, Colombia.
Our "wrong turn" while hiking in San Antonio turned out to be oh so right. This family generously let us film them processing sugar cane into bricks of panela, and even offered us cups of steeping hot panela 'tea' (hot water and fresh panela).
Panela (or rapidura, piloncillo, etc) is a minimally-processed sugar found in Latin America. The flavor is incredibly complex compared to white sugar. It's also a term we often use to describe a particular kind of sweetness that can be tasted in certain coffees.
Panela can be found in many Latin American grocery stores, so travel is not required!

never heard of panela, looks like it'd have such a rich sweet flavor!
Thank you for sharing this! I wish I could have tried that tea 😊
One diabetes, coming right up! 🤣
Are you going to sell it?
No plans on selling panela. We'll stick to coffee.
