In the beginning I realized when Maggie helped Genie (Ma's daughter) she says your a life saver and Maggie says you too. And at the end of the movie Genie knocks out Ma and saved Maggie while she was choking. Than when Ma was threatening to throw Genie into the fire Maggie stabs Ma and saves Genie.
Yea the movie was very blah. Bur Octavia is a good actor. And the ending was very blah as well I mean she took a knife to the back and just recovered like she just didn't get stab.

I saw it today and I wouldn't call it horror. It was interesting to watch, and there was only one little jumpscare (when Ma's daughter appears with a mask) but that's about it. It was actually pretty chill.

And another lesson: Monsters arnt born, we create them. Dont bully people, it may not be immediate but karma will eventually catch up to you. In this story its a bit too much though.

Have you guys seen great classics such as 1978 Halloween, The Shining, etc.? There was little gore and not very many deaths yet those films are still held in high regard to this day. Deaths and gore don't make a horror film. It's cool and shocking to see but what makes a good horror film is how the story is written, the lighting, the atmosphere, and the acting.

But in recent years there has always either been everyone dying throughout the movie or the writers deciding to pull some plot at the end that kills off any survivors. Horror movies with happy or at least happy-ish endings don’t seem to be all that common anymore. The group that makes these movies though seem to actually like giving their characters happy endings, which I honestly kinda of find refreshing these days

I feel like she is a victim of her mother's abuse but that does not excuse the manipulative behavior she most likely used to convince a mentally ill individual into committing murder. How does this guy think that MA (Sueanne) has closure? The kids get away, including her own child...who has now betrayed her. They've definitely left this open for a sequel.
Fun Fact: Octavia Spencer only said yes to being in this movie on the condition that her villain would be given a sympathetic backstory and at some level they gave her one which doesn't condone her actions but helps you understand them. Arguably The core of the story is about how the past sins of the previous generation can negatively affect the current one. And also acknowledging that parents aren't perfect people. The real tragedy of the titular MA was that she never really grew up mentally after what happened to her, and fearing that her daughter would have the same troubling high school experience (And admit it, most people's high school experiences sucked and every parent's worst fear is their kids repeating their past mistakes or screwing up their lives in some way), it makes sense why she'd want to shelter her own child but was too stuck in her head to realize how much the world and by-extension people have changed. But at the end of the day, most of these adults who were killed were terrible people who either never really respect the privacy of their kids or never regretted their past actions enough to be mature or better people, thereby making them easy to hate enough to see them die with a small sense of wish-fulfillment.
Ma didn’t have to do all that messy shit. She should’ve just gave em that good ol’ southern + Asian + Arabian + Hispanic + Caribbean SLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

Have you guys seen great classics such as 1978 Halloween, The Shining, etc.? There was little gore and not very many deaths yet those films are still held in high regard to this day.
Deaths and gore don't make a horror film. It's cool and shocking to see but what makes a good horror film is how the story is written, the lighting, the atmosphere, and the acting.
B1Kobe0824 Yeah, a lot of older horror movies also normally didn’t have it where everyone died. But in recent years there has always either been everyone dying throughout the movie or the writers deciding to pull some plot at the end that kills off any survivors. Horror movies with happy or at least happy-ish endings don’t seem to be all that common anymore. The group that makes these movies though seem to actually like giving their characters happy endings, which I honestly kinda of find refreshing these days
So clearly, this is part of the Matriarch trilogy along with Mother! and Mama.

I feel like she is a victim of her mother's abuse but that does not excuse the manipulative behavior she most likely used to convince a mentally ill individual into committing murder. I do not excuse her ex boyfriend either, but she should not be victimized and should serve her time.

Fun Fact: Octavia Spencer only said yes to being in this movie on the condition that her villain would be given a sympathetic backstory and at some level they gave her one which doesn't condone her actions but helps you understand them. Arguably The core of the story is about how the past sins of the previous generation can negatively affect the current one. And also acknowledging that parents aren't perfect people. The real tragedy of the titular MA was that she never really grew up mentally after what happened to her, and fearing that her daughter would have the same troubling high school experience (And admit it, most people's high school experiences sucked and every parent's worst fear is their kids repeating their past mistakes or screwing up their lives in some way), it makes sense why she'd want to shelter her own child but was too stuck in her head to realize how much the world and by-extension people have changed. But at the end of the day, most of these adults who were killed were terrible people who either never really respect the privacy of their kids or never regretted their past actions enough to be mature or better people, thereby making them easy to hate enough to see them die with a small sense of wish-fulfillment.
