I (German) married a girl from California, and we had plans about living in the US, raising our kids there. Before our wedding, I introduced her to my family, so we came over to Europe, and she wanted to expierence a real winter. So we planned to stay here for about 3 months. About two weeks in Germany, she just stated: "This is my home. I want to stay here. This seems like everything I looked for." And so, in a shocking turn of events, we scrapped all our future plans about the US and California, and live now in a small village in Germany. Planning your marriage is simple compared to the task of planning your future life. Sometimes strange things happen, and you end up in a place you never expected.

I've arrived in Bavaria back on the 3rd of June 93' thru the US Army. Stationed the next 3.5yrs throughout Bavaria. I met my Frau back on 28th of Jan 94'. We tied the knot in Nov 96', I then separated from the Army Jan 97' and gave it a chance at making a new life in Mittelfranken. 23 yrs later, plus 23 yrs working at a German company and plus 3 kids.....guessing I did alright for an Ami!
I'm from San Jose but I am married to a lovely German girl. We have five kids. And although I miss my ocean - the Pacific - almost every single day, I still think it was the best decision we ever made to raise our kids here in Germany. This country is just awesome.
My friends had a bilingual wedding - a nice touch was the bride (german) said her vows in english to her husband (american) who said his in german! very bad german but still a nice touch
This happened to my friend who is English and got married in France to his French girlfriend/wife. She said her vows in English and hе said his in French. That was in church. I can't remember the official town hall one. I think they just had to say 'oui'.
Thank you for a very interesting Video. Tell Cody, I came to Germany 48 years ago to lecture for a year at the University and have stayed. I have never regretted for a moment my decision to remain here. I might have been happy in the USA, despite guns, racisim and intolerance, but I have had such a wonderful life here, I just cannot Imagine things could be any better. When I visit the USA I feel very foreign, which shows that I have totally integrated into the German culture. Don't look back, I am certain that he will have a fantastic life with Speedy and their children here.
Chuck Thanks for your story. You've had the luck to experience a what-might-have-been life. I envy you. All the best to you and yours now and in the future.
I think everyone can take a little relationship advice from Cody and Speedy here: talk! Talk about the complicated stuff, talk about your opinions and find a solution TOGETHER. Great video, great talk!
Haha I married a German girl when I was 18 in America we lived there for 12 years and moved to Germany last year with our 2 year old daughter now and my daughter has dual citizenship so I can live here forever now funny how I found this video
Married in the States, moved to Germany, because did not want our son to be raised in the Bronx. Got divorced here and we both still live here in different cities. The son, sorry for me, moved to California. Ex-husband sired 2 more children with 2 more women, but lives alone.
Truthfully. I moved here from miami, and raising kids is nice here, very slow paced, people have time for vacation and hobbys. But I'm spoiled by all the american convenience. We just went to Denmark to marry, it was so easy. It is recognized in both countries. I never wanted a big church wedding or something. So we had a easy Standesamt wedding in Denmark. :) And we are a couple since 18 years. :) Nalf, seems you feel some pressure now, since your friends get married and maybe have kids in the coming 2 - 4 years..... If you can´t find a girl in Germany or just feel like you stuck make a travel, sometimes a travel can change everything. It did for me, I went backpacking to Australia with 26 for 3 months and came back with a American - he stayed and we married(3 years later), today we have two kids and well, we live in the US for now, because of his job (I never thought I have to move there). I went for this 3 month travel, because I felt my life should be different, or something has to change. I never been out looking to pick up somebody or even had the thought, but it just happened. I am not a "party girl" or one you pick up easy (more the flower on the wall) I did not even go out at night there. And still - My husband did his backpacking travel over India to Australia - we just meet (no girls dorm, I was surprised) and talked and that was it. He stayed, he never left. :)

It's always a pleasure when Cody is in your videos. I like this guy, or let's say it the American way: I love this guy he's the greatest. Well, besides you of course.
Great talk! Got married to my Greek husband in a tiny village in southern Germany and remember the paperwork and the stress to organize accomodation for friends and family coming over from Greece and Italy. We had everything translated also into Italian despite Greek. Was a great wedding!! And the marriage is great, too. As a binational couple you are forced to talk more, so many things are not granted for your partner and I see that as a big strength. We really know each other very deeply and have respect for our differences. My best wishes to Cody and his future wife, they seem to be the kind of couple that works things out, whatever comes along :-) Greetings from a"germ" on a Greek island to the unicorns!!!
I married a German girl, took her home for 7 years, but then we returned to Germany and have been living here since 9/11 and are probably going to stay living here forever 😊
Thank you Cody for sharing. This perspective, dealing with uncertainty and your aclimation process is really interesting (as your situation is a bit different than NALFs). Would gladly hear more :-)
Compliments for the music selection in the Corn Hole scenes (Mozart Piano Sonata No. 16 in C Major K.545); I had fun learning this piece for a piano exam as a kid and still enjoy playing it now. Can I suggest you play this instead as an alternative to the ubiquitous Für Elise ?
As i am both American & German (always a stranger in a strange land). i enjoy you lads & your adventures. Chicks obviously dig the summer apparel too ! Enjoy the ride!
Cool video! The background music in the beginning is perfect to wake up and be motivated right from the start. The camera angle when you two talk is cool. I feel just like hanging out with two nice guys in the garden and listen silently about what they talk about. Interesting insight from Cody. Thank you!
Cody when’s wedding I wanna be there for Polterabend.... Nalf you are drinking more beer.... Robi - noooo Germs.... As retired USAF I spent 13 years in Germany and 4 in England and rest in USA not in that order. Married a German woman, ( my ancestry being German ) but didn’t work out . So two of three great kids in Ramstein area and the third by me... it’s always fun when I come back every two years visiting family and friends .... so back to Cody and speedy, when’s wedding??? Nalf microphone not that bad....
And you sayd "I don't like to be naked in front of other people", in ur sauna episode. And now, you are basicly naked in INTERNET. Makes me smile out loud.
I got married to an arabic speaking man from North Africa. It took us more than a year just to get all papers together. The most exhausting part was to get an appointment at the german embassy in Algiers to legalise the birth certificate. Then our migration office tested for 3 months if his passport is real. Then last November we got the ok and 3 weeks later we got married legally in the town hall office (Standesamt). Also the woman who did the wedding insisted on having an interpreter, although my husband said he understand enough german. Well it is a way to make money for german communities. (It costed 100 Euro to have an legally accepted interpreter). The ceremony was bilingual, and it took a while, because I told her how we met and stuff. But you can have it quick by just answering yes at the right time.
I married an American in germany. He speaks no german. We told him went to say ja and where to sign. Then it was over. Married till divorce took us part
Welcome to the club bro, been here for 7 years now I live by Forchheim in Bayern..adjusting was hard for me but I wouldn't choose another place to live Germany is great to live in but I still miss the states!
I did the German wedding - the ceremony can be in both languages and not twice as long! But that depends on who conducts the ceremony. We got lucky. I have had all those conversations! Great video!
My aunt married an Italian who had most of his family come over and my cousin married a South Korean who had his parents and sister come over. Multilingual weddings seem more daunting than they actually are, if everyone is nice. People will always find ways to communicate with one another. Only thing you need is for the texts during the wedding to be in both languages (which churches are fine with too btw if it's a christian wedding).
You seem like a typical German man when you play those beer games in the Backyard and praise German sundays, because we Germans chill out on them :D I'm glad for Cody and Speedy! Maybe It will be the same with you eventually and you marry a German girl, too :) Greetings from Bavaria!
This video is so reassuring to me :) It's really insightful to see, how your life can change radically, but you can make it into your new normal life and learn to love it.

Honestly, I don't think you are missing much in Chico or Willows. Since the fires there is such a lack of housing. The rice fields were interesting growing up, although I loved playing in the shop on the Ranch, but the mosquitos man are huge, fortunately they don't bite me, but my friends and family would be covered black in mosquitos. I spent some time there, but many eon's before you were even thought of. I had moved back and was living in Orland, CA because if you try to live in Chico they only show houses M-F between 10 am to 2 pm, and they don't care how old you are or how much you make, all they want is a cosigner on the lease with you. I was like, I am 50 years old and I have a great job. WTF! My company offered me a job in Georgia last year, and I took it after watching most of my friends lose everything in the fires. You are lucky your family is from Willows and wasn't affected other than the horrific smoke. Good luck with the wedding, and I am sure there will be plenty of opportunities for you there in Germany.
For years, I assumed that--after I retired as an English teacher--I'd go back to SH to teach in the American school on Dolan Barracks (I was stationed there from1977 to 1980). Then they closed the base. :(
Ok does he miss bidwell park or the smell of the oats in the the rain or the smell of the the rice fields burning? I lived in paradise CA for years but I miss Germany. Great vid Nalf too.
As a German it's totally strange to see that Cody has "bushy" armpits but a shaven chest. I would always do the opposite! But really great video! Thumbs up!
@Mikey Lewis Come on thats so german a bit of shove around and pocking fun on each other, thats all about fun if no one startes to mention what it could mean or .... what ever. Btw. a germ is although a kind of grain even if nobody did use it any more for that meaning in this days. For the Tomies we speak Hans and if you feel Ami is to friendly for the germ replie, call them Hams.
We did the two parties thing (husband is Belgian) we got officially married in Belgium, and like you said with the proof of not being married thing, to get that paper I actually had to travel in advance to the US embassy in Brussels to get it there before they would even let us schedule the wedding with the town hall because that's not something that exists in the US. All of the other paperwork (birth certificate, FBI background check and a few other things) I had to get apostilled which was an annoying process. The official ceremony at City Hall was in Dutch only, so my family sort of just had to guess what was happening. Then we had a party back in the States for people who couldn't come. After living here in the US married for a few years, we're actually in the process of moving over to Belgium...ironically the paperwork process has been a lot easier than it was to get married there. Tl;dr good luck to him on the paperwork adventure!
NALF, nobody could accuse you of giving your videos bland and uninteresting titles. So, I almost expected you to come out with your carefully hidden german girlfriend....
Oh boy. Plucking the pencil from behind my ear, looking for a piece of paper & start doing the math: One Manchild + A man + Sloth-y-ness + Toddler-isms + Germanisation + A pinch of rudeness + Questionable humour + Summer vibes + Positive vibes + The dream of flying + Some bragging - Clothes - Manners (rectifying the situation: bless you!) Equals...Uhhh...Wait, I need one more thing to come to a correct outcome of this calculation: Could you please drum your fists on your chest? Only in the service of science & to prove the evolutionary development of (male) human beings in the 21st century. In case you didn’t get it: I’m joking 😉 No offence, no puns intended & yeah if you want to do something good & give something back to our every-other-day-entertainment support Nick on Patreon. I think he deserves it.
ItwasEllinotme textile-free zone. You should be used to the questionable humour, lack of clothes & the pinch of rudeness 🤣 and obviously you’re used to British manners as well.
You bet I'm used to it. I'm spoiled when it comes to manners though & I blame you. And as you can see I'm still alive after witnessing another two people getting gold-shackled.
Well, illegal cannabis has, because of the sh... the dealer put into it to stretch the supply. Cannabis in itself can also have long term effects. But it is arguably not worse than alcohol and cigarettes...the biggest risk it is becoming an entry drug. But it might arguably make more sense to inform the population about the risks and allow them to decide.

You should be happy not to be in CA. It is horrible there by now. My husband got homesick in Germany and we moved to the US.

I love how you two stand in the garden playing some games with a beer bottle in the hand. Totally German :D
Dammit now I remember what I forgot during my last grocery shopping. I'm out of beer!
war auch mein erster Gedanke. Gut integriert :D
Totally normal not just german
You go in US they can't stand without a beer in hands, it's not just german believe.

Bidwell park is nice. Paradise burnt down to almost nothing. Has it been rebuilt? Don't like the skeeters at all.
The only downside to living in a small city like Schwäbisch Hall is that there are no stores where you can buy decent microphones. 😄
Thankfully we live in the age of the Internet ;-)
There is always Amazon
You've found your groove. Chest display works well.
Employ Nalf at the Wedding to make Realife Subtitles XD
He'll get sacked, and then the person who hired him will get sacked too. :D
As a German it's totally strange to see that Cody has "bushy" armpits but a shaven chest. I would always do the opposite!
But really great video! Thumbs up!
I was thinking exactly the same! 😊
Some men just don't have chest hair. I might be wrong but I don't see Cody as the shaving guy.
Does your friend Robi usually refer to Germans as "germs"?
Titamiva No, just my really close friends who call us “Ami’s”! All love though!
@@theimportedbrand Sounds fair Ami ;-)) greetings from a germ.
@@lotharschepers2240 Yeah, totally agree with you! What's life without fun?! The term "G/germs" actually made me LOL and made my day.
@@theimportedbrand I had a good laugh, but it made me cringe to see some hurtful/hateful comments about you. Just ignore them! You are awesome, Ami!
Absolut schön
As a guy from Oregon who's going to Germany for Uni I love Nick's constant insistence in Oregonian supremacy.
Deck furniture: You definitely need a sun umbrella too.

next time you should try "Bauerngolf " - a golf version with rubber boots/ wellies. Maybe you have better chances
Youre videos always makes me come down
Also, this is a very nice rendition of Mozart's Sonata facile in C major.
Simultaneous translation at the wedding. Solved!
The wedding will basically like a Champions League Press conference. And only when "ja" was translated, it's official.
The US seems very far culturally at the moment. My friends in the US are thinking of moving.
11:08 Gesundheit!
Too bad that I'm married, otherwise Nick would have already been visited. Very nice man. ☺️
I want this kind of friendship.
NALF, nobody could accuse you of giving your videos bland and uninteresting titles. So, I almost expected you to come out with your carefully hidden german girlfriend....
Oh boy. Plucking the pencil from behind my ear, looking for a piece of paper & start doing the math:
One Manchild
+ A man
+ Sloth-y-ness
+ Toddler-isms
+ Germanisation
+ A pinch of rudeness
+ Questionable humour
+ Summer vibes
+ Positive vibes
+ The dream of flying
+ Some bragging
- Clothes
- Manners (rectifying the situation: bless you!)
Equals...Uhhh...Wait, I need one more thing to come to a correct outcome of this calculation: Could you please drum your fists on your chest? Only in the service of science & to prove the evolutionary development of (male) human beings in the 21st century.
In case you didn’t get it: I’m joking 😉 No offence, no puns intended & yeah if you want to do something good & give something back to our every-other-day-entertainment support Nick on Patreon. I think he deserves it.
ItwasEllinotme textile-free zone. You should be used to the questionable humour, lack of clothes & the pinch of rudeness 🤣 and obviously you’re used to British manners as well.
There you are! I thought you got lost on the altar. These videos without your comment aren’t the same 🥺
You bet I'm used to it. I'm spoiled when it comes to manners though & I blame you. And as you can see I'm still alive after witnessing another two people getting gold-shackled.
Hey, will there be a wedding video? :-)
Your videos keep getting better and better. This one is a gem, it's so personal and honest. Thanks for sharing!
Hey at 0:50 look at the stairs. Any physics nerds here? What is happening their or is it a bug from compresion or somthing?
It's a moire' effect due to (a) the speed of panning, (b) the spacing between the steps, and (c) the frame rate. I thought it was neat, too!
Nice deep conversation. I prefer this so much over those goofy other American football players (S**** N.) here on RUclips ;-)
love your videos, look forward to watching -part of my morning routine :-)
Just realized how well this aged!
What do the initials NALF stand for?
This guy reminds me of Ben Cohen, the anti-bullying advocate and former professional athlete
We lived in Germany and now in the States. Nothing has to be written in stone.
That was a great video, very interesting!
You really need to find yourself a great lake to swim at. Nothing beats a hot summer day at a lake :-)
In Oregon as well as many other US states Cannabis is legal.
Do you think Cannabis should be legal in Germany?
Well, illegal cannabis has, because of the sh... the dealer put into it to stretch the supply. Cannabis in itself can also have long term effects. But it is arguably not worse than alcohol and cigarettes...the biggest risk it is becoming an entry drug. But it might arguably make more sense to inform the population about the risks and allow them to decide.
I'd love to meet you fellows very much!!!
Yo I get it. Im from redding so shout out to Chico and willows.
