  • The story of food and farming in the US is not just one of neglect and extraction. It's also one of wisdom and liberation, with practices that have intricate, cultural roots.
Leah Penniman returns to the show with a new book, "Farming While Black," which includes stories and applications that have her community at their center.

My sister and I (heir farm property owners) are fighting to keep the land within our family. It has been difficult - but this inspires me!

Leah, I'm so proud of you and all those working with you to create harvests from the land. I was born and raised in Mississippi, where my family (mom and kids) lived on large farm (plantation really) and we chopped and picked cotton and pecan. I still grow a little garden, but living in burbs, its hard to farm right. Keep going strong.

It may be just me, but those two look a lot alike. They could be mother and daughter. Oh and by the way I'm definitely going to buy your book thanks for the information.

This comment comes two years post airing, but the message given can not me more important in the context of what we are confronting in our country today. I am a white gardener and farmer in the south. I questioned where are all the Black farmers on You Tube, as I follow many homesteaders in that way, all white farmers by the way. Leah you are a breath of fresh air and I applaud you for educating those around you. I embrace permaculture ideals but it has yet to be presented to me in the way you spoke about its history, and I wonder why that is so...

Pretty Prudent “Get yo’self! You know there’s a difference and you know why it’s pointed out! Others don’t have to be addressed because it’s already known and understood who is ahead or behind in the game...!

@Ardella C Anthony : What you’re describing is called Victimhood. It’s sad that you see yourself that way. Black Americans tend to be the Only group that do.

@TrueValues77 : “Inhumane”? I suppose you fail to consider the Africans in places like Libya, who are Enslaving other Africans - and putting them in cages in modern day. And they were doing it Well before American slavery- probably where white men learned it best.

@TrueValues77 : Who’s really the “ignoramus” (is that even a word)? Sounds like you need to do a little reading, Dear.
