345 - Anyone remember that oooold console called the Xbox 360? You must be 90+ years old if you do. Well let's look at the console and a bunch of games I find interesting, listening to the 5.1 surround sound that many of these games natively provided! NOTE: You may need to use a RUclips app on a device like a Roku. PS5 works, but you need to set the audio output to DOLBY. You also need a RUclips account associated with a Gmail address.

Joe deserves mad props for capturing his own gameplay footage for these videos and not just using other RUclipsrs' footage like most channels do. That's real integrity.
There are others that do this. Digital Foundry are too obvious, so Square Eyed Jak is a great example of a much smaller creator who captures all their own footage.

PlayStation 5 will play this video back in surround if the PS5's audio output is set to DOLBY and the RUclips app restarted. I confirmed this myself. Unfortunately this method won't work with PS4 or any of the Xbox consoles.

This just reminds me how unimpressive the graphical leaps of the new generations are. the leap from ps1 to ps2 was mind-blowing, ps2 to ps3 and xbox to 360 was still really impressive. After that, everything was really just meh.

That's because you've been persuaded by marketing, not your own judgements.
Biggest graphical leap ever was probably when the first generation of 3dfx video cards were released. You literally went from a pixel mess to sharp edges with great lighting effects.
I do agree anything after xb360/ps3 is basically more of the same.
PS4 was still very impressive after PS3, mainly the lighting got so much more realistic

People slept on Enslaved. I really enjoyed that game.
Fallout New Vegas in particular is hands down the best in the beloved franchise. Even though I got for my PS3 back in the day. The limited collectors edition no less.
Sometimes you forget just how colorless this generation was, 95% of the games in this episode have so little saturation. It's a problem nowadays too, but triply so back then.
Not with Nintendo.

what games are you thinking about for nowadays? i feel like games now are much more varied, but this generation definitely had a problem.
I love games and memories of this gen, but they all have that desaturated, colorless sheen to them. Everything western has far too much neon and "club" type lighting to it now though. We haven't had a good middle ground in western gaming since 2003.

Wow. Naming it the 360 actually makes some sense... And then they named their next system the Xbox One.
And before some tells me it's not that confusing, I will never forget the time a dad walked up to me at a wal-mart and asked about the Xbox systems, and was still so confused, he had to ask an employee to explain it to him. It was THAT bad a name.
They still have awful names. I remember when the Xbox one X was a thing and had to explain to someone that it’s different than the Xbox “Series” X. I can’t wait until next gen, when we’ll Have the Xbox OBX Series XXX
If I remember correctly, the XBox One's name was meant to show it's an all-around entertainment system of sorts. Doesn't make it any less ridiculous in my opinion, and I have no clue as to why the XBox Series consoles are named in this manner.

I switched to PC gaming after the PS2 era so I don't pay too much attention to consoles but from what I've seen the Xbox line of consoles have very confusing names. So there was Xbox then Xbox 360 which is fine. Then Xbox One which I don't understand why they called it that. Now when talking about the original Xbox you have to called it the Xbox (2001) so people don't get confused. After Xbox One I'm not totally sure. I think the current Xbox is called the series X but there is also a series S and without looking it up I don't know what the difference is. I think the Series X is slightly more powerful than the Series S. I also think it is dumb to have different versions of consoles with different graphical capabilities. At that point just use a PC and upgrade video cards.
Yet it outsold the Wii U, and people like to crap on its name like it's a field day AND attribute it to being the reason why it failed.
I'm not saying I disagree with you, in fact, you're one of the few people to call out the Xbox One's bs. The Series X/S makes a lot of sense seeing how nowadays tech such as smartphones have a similar naming convention with letters.

Usually installing the games on the hard drive improves loading and textures.

@@Gatorade69 Yes, but there is very few games that dont accept installations, the battlefield ones for example. Any other game you can simply press X and click on Install, even if the game doesnt offer this option, the dashboard does.
I found it funny how Joe crapped on gears and halo and recommended bullet witch 😂

All things he said about both games were accurate though.
That makes sense, based on the clips. I don't think he plays much FPS.
He went from playing strongly in Raiden to looking like he was about to die to a Grunt on normal difficulty.

It's Beautiful Katamari. Short game and extra levels are DLC. It's ok if you want your Katamari fix. I played through it once and never played again.
Helps when you get Yukes to develop a game.
The TNA game still holds up in graphics.

i disagree with your comment on gears of war 1 graphics, when the trailer came out those were unbelievable. also if you never played 2 and 3 you missed what people love about this series.
Absolutely! I personally like the gritty tone of the game, it's part of the story. Oh that trailer was epic, with dim lighting, muzzle flashes & of course "mad world" playing in the background. Also Gears 2 & 3 were SO much better, even tho the OG was phenomenal on its own.
That trailer made me buy the console and the game. I even bought the game prior to buying the console.

@@nasanchez964 Oh no not the scratch ring of death! That must've been a huge bummer. I did have to buy a second copy of "Kane & Lynch" due to that scratch ring. The reason I bought Gears before the console is because I sucked at saving up $, so I figured if I buy the game I'll already be invested $60 so I might as well save up for the console, it actually worked. I stepped away from gaming around 9/11 and it was Gears alone that got me back into gaming, and have been a VERY active gamer since, a bit too much.
Actually there is a Aerosmith song In dead or alive 4 you have to Play as every character and beat them then unlock Helena and beat her story and you’ll get credit with an Aerosmith song

Awesome selection. As far as DoA 4 is does have Aerosmith. When you finish the game with all characters and get the true ending it plays "Amazing " during the cinematic. Lol
Not only! If you're sitting on the intro screen long enough, you'll get sort of ad for the game where Eat the Rich by them is playing.
10:35 Interestingly in Lost Odyssey the immortal characters will actually revive themselves during battles after a few turns as long as someone else is alive, you only get a game over if everyone is dead at once.
Damn i guess I really do suck, I got game over back in the day at least twice within the first 10 hours
Loved lost odyssey
Lost Odyssey would also benefit from a full-fledged remaster, as would Blue Dragon. Both were marvelous games, but the fact they shipped on multiple discs was a detriment to them I feel, mainly because keeping track of the discs could be a pain. With modern storage media, I could easily see the games getting a graphical overhaul and being able to fit in one disc as opposed to 3 or 4.
The 360 actually outsold the PS3 for most of that console generation. It wasn't until the very end that Sony managed to just pull ahead.
@@Gatorade69 The interesting thing is that early PS3 are as unrealiable as the early 360s, but it was worse because Sony's warranty was garbage and MS actually lost tons of money trying to fix the mess of the red ring. But in comparison very few people mention the yellow light of death compared to the red ring of death, probably because no one had a PS3 on release lol.

@@GenesHand I don't know if I'd go that far. My original 60GB PS3 Fat still works fine to this day, whereas every original 360 is generally expected to red ring at some point.
Let’s not forget the Xbox 360 was the first console to institute its own reward system in the form of achievements. And Sony wanting to compete more and grab some of Microsoft’s limelight introduced their reward system in the form of trophies. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery after all.
Actually nobody knows if the ps3 even outsold 360 in the end, Go look at the last reported sales data for each console. 360 last sales numbers are from 2014 while ps3 last sales numbers are from 2017.
Choosing Gears of war for the first game was a good choice. It was THE game to get for 360 in the early years.
That and Deadrising and Halo 3 obviously 👍
(Also, Lost Odyssey is sooo under appreciated)
It seems crazy to say Gears didn't look special otherwise (paraphrasing Joe). That game had the most amazing graphics for it's time. It's what lead to everyone using UE3. That game sold SO many systems. I remember being around an HD TV with it running and we all just couldn't believe how awesome it looked.
Lost Odyssey as the first RPG was a very welcome sight (was expecting Blue Dragon as the first one).
I was a little sad he didn't try Gears 2. That was what convinced me to get a 360 (along with constant pressure from co-workers), and is so much better than the first Gears (IMO).

@@jamesbevan4479 I'm also recalling that 1 gave me motion sickness, but 2 did not. I'm trying to remember if 2 was when they found the one guys wife, or if it was 3.
So cool. Not many people know how to do 5.1 on youtube or how to play it. I use kodi and have spdif passthrough enabled. So when starting this clip, i hear my yamaha dsp e800 say "click" and it shows "dolby digital" on the display!
Very nice. Last time I used a RUclips plugin for Kodi (years ago) there were a bunch of problems with 2FA and other BS and I eventually just stopped using it. I will have to give it another try!
@@RetroNumanox After installing the Kodi add-on for RUclips I ran into the exact same problem I was having years ago with authentication. I ended up using JDownloader to download it with AAC 5.1 384kbps audio. I'm looking forward to web browsers (hopefully) supporting multichannel audio sometime in the future.
I have to admit that I abandoned the 360 shortly after mine RROD'd, which was about six months after it was released. I firmware hacked the DVD drive, to play imports and backups, so I couldn't exactly mail it to MS to have it repaired. So it sat on my shelf, unplugged, and I shifted my focus to the PS3, and never looked back. In fact, the 360 is still sitting on my shelf, and has 17 years of dust on it.
You haven't dusted your room in over 17 years? Good god man, I'd hate to see the rest of your living conditions.
I dust everything...EXCEPT for the Xbox 360. I do this out of spite.

1:43 might want to check over those caps, some of them look like they might be starting to bulge up, plus the one to the lower right has some orange gunk on top that could be from leakage.
My pc power supply is uh, God maybe close to 15 years old, I got a little more juice than needed, which was mprobably smart. Under all the dust qnd muck, the caps look God awful, leak, bloated, leaning, etc... I reused it from a phenom build into a ryzen build lol.
My phenom was like a parallel build to the 360/ps3/wii ran it for a decade, pushing 5 years on my ryzen now
Pretty sure my dreamcast caps look bad, but I discovered a quiet hack to that loud spin whine, I put a burnt flashback disc in and I thought it broke it, but it plays fine its not loud anymore.

Funny how we're in 2022 and most streaming services' sound is still in the dark ages. Half the amazon prime movies I've watched don't properly play through a 5.1 system, drives me nuts
Yeah and then a "feature" of the PS5 is just trying to emulate what great sound systems have been doing for decades with headphones. People hapily buy new tvs but never bother getting anything better than a soundbar; its frustrating.
@@geoffnaylor3734 I use a Sherwood receiver from around 2001. Speakers from 1996 and a sub woofer from around the early 2000s with my TV and it sounds great! There is a ton of great sounding older audio equipment out there that can be had for extremely cheap. So why not put it to good use? Back in the day lots of people had big Hi-Fi setups for their TV but for some reason nobody does that anymore. I don't even think they really sell anything like that anymore, not like they used to anyways. It is all soundbars like you said.

I never understood what Microsoft was thinking when they released a version of this console without the hard drive. You can't save games without the hard drive so what's the point? So stupid.
on the 360 is not as bad because the initial idea was to use memory cards and after some time they allowed USB drives to be used (with a 16GB cap that was lifted in later updates) and the console runs most of its games directly from the disc (you can install games and I recommend doing it in any game to improve the experience and to save the optical laser) , unlike today which have mandatory installs. On the PS3, even though I love it, the 14GB model is pretty useless, most of the games have mandatory installs because of the slow read speeds of the blu ray drive.

Surprised that RPGs were on the list, but Blue Dragon didn't make the cut. I didn't think it was amazing, but it had the originator of Final Fantasy at the helm, and artwork from Akira Toriyama (Dragon Ball)
Are you sure about the reasoning for naming it the 360? I'd always understood it was because of the vision for the system. Much like their launch vision for Xbox One, it was to encompass all forms of media and entertainment in one living room device. Total coverage, 360 degrees. While the Xbox One aimed to do the same thing, all in ONE living room device.
Well of course the corporate version will be all grand and wonderful like that. They aren't just gonna come out and say "We didn't wanna appear as second-fiddle to the PlayStation 3".

That’s why I like Game Sack so much, they have good taste in gaming.

Thank you for Including Dead or Alive 4 and Ninja Gaiden 2! They're my favorite games on the console and I still think. Ninja Gaiden 2 is the best action game ever

Actually I have 5.1.2 and the speaker check Joe does here fails. I'm told RUclips ONLY supports 2.0 stereo.

Tried on a JBL Bar 5.1 and the Dolby works with my Mi Box S
I think the first 2 GoW games had a more visceral feel to them than the later games. I think it has to do with the positioning of the camera.
The Xbox 360 (circle) is in fact 120 times better than the PS3
My Dad and I played TDU all the time back then. If he ever got pulled over he just reset the console so he wouldn’t have to pay the ticket. Smart man.
Seeing Bullet Witch in this Xbox 360 video made me remember playing the 2017 PC version which has all the DLC from the Xbox 360 original.
Lost Odyssey is a masterpiece. Has one of (if not) the best battle themes I've heard in an RPG

Wow, I didn't even realize I had surround on my RUclips app. The sound on this video is incredible and just makes all other videos seem inferior.
The xbox 360 sold more than the PS3 upto the 360 discontinued April 2016 playstation 3 was still selling upto October 2016 them extra 6 months gave them second spot.
so glad BULLET WITCH got some love in this ep, it is nice to know it is available on steam for cheap, RR6 was great but RR7 really is a better version, wish CHROME HOUNDS and ENCHANTED ARMS got a shout out also, no to mention the HARD CORPS contra inspired game.
It made sense for Microsoft to name the follow-up to the Xbox, the Xbox 360, as you said, naming it Xbox2, would sound like a generation behind the current PS3, but why would they name the next Xbox, Xbox One?.. I personally figured it was the same power as the old PSOne. I get confused very easily.
Because they wanted it to be the All-In-One device at the time. Shortened to One.
A bit unfortunate since the competition was still using numbering in their names.
Sometimes it feels like they did it just to annoy the scene. I mean I got modded OG Xbox. Now try to find articles and such from net with the today's Xbox naming convention. Yes it kinda sucks 😀

I bought my first X360 yesterday!!! Was always a Sony guy, ps1, still have my ps2, my ps3 died recently, still have my ps4... saw my PS3 dying as a chance to try it and so far I'm liking it. Will now watch the episode, thanks!
The best version of cross platform games was always on the Xbox for whatever reason.

I refuse to call the new generation of Microsoft consoles by the names they chose. Such silly BS marketing names 🤦♂️. They're just the xbox 4 to me, and the last gen was the xbone.

I also still have my original launch 360 and it still works perfectly. I did tear it down to give it a thorough cleaning.

As for shooters, you gotta play Akai Katana. Best NA shooter in my opinion. I believe you would enjoy Wartech, but probably not love it, just guessing. Same ballpark for Deathsmiles but you should at least try em.
As for fighting games, your copy of of Ultra is very lonely. Take advantage of the 360s vast library of great fighting games! DOA4 is nice and all but DOA5 Ultimate is at your disposal. KoF XIII is fantastic; skip XII, Soul Calibur V probably outedges IV but I play both, Tekken 6 and Tekken x Street Fighter are great and Marvel VS Capcom 3 Ultimate in name alone should speak for itself. Other notable entries Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, the 3 BlazBlue games, Battle Fantasia and Rumble Roses are all fantastic. To not be too annoying I'll stop there but if you want another 10-20 quality IMO must plays let me know and I'll roll em off. Happy gaming!!

Gears of war 3 and Red Dead redemption 2 with the greatest games on the console I love toward mode online that was my first online experience was Ford mode f*** I didn't like fighting people other people I like fighting bots waves of bots
Gears of war 3 we made it to insane level 50 took us about a year for playing it I had a good crew although they was all Mexicans and only two of them spoke English good we managed they were good guys especially one of them was a real good friend of mine but I lost track of him that sucks
I'm nearing 50 years old and have been playing video games since the Intellivision. Red Ring of Death aside -- hey, they fixed it for free! -- the Xbox 360 is my favorite system of all time.
Yeah, they fixed mine for free too. Except they sent another one that eventually broke as well.
Then that kept happening til my warranty ended and they stopped taking them back.
I have owned five separate 360s, and I only bought one. All of them RROD'd
@@ImTheMayor if you install to the HDD, you don’t get the RROD. At least I never did after 1000s of hours of gaming. Everything installed. Nothing running from disc.

@@jimmelton5846 rrod will happen right now if you play a game on Xbox 360 to the point of over heating it. RROD, and the later revision of it to the EXXXX error (which is just RROD with a different indicator on the system).. these were “fixed” by allowing you to install to the HDD, thus cutting down on the heat the system creates.
Lol and I'm 41 this year, having started with the Atari 2600, and found the 360/PS3 era so intensely unappealing that I almost quit the hobby for good! Had it not been for Nintendo and indies I'd have never bought another new console after this one
This brings back great memories for me. At the time I was working at FYE, an entertainment (music, movies, video games) retailer here on the US East Coast. I can vividly remember the day of the 360 release. I was so happy to secure myself a console. Went home after my shift and played all night long. Good times. Good times.

Probably because the app you're using doesn't support 5.1 yet. The web browser version of RUclips can't do it.

@@lifeonleo1074 No joke. The video uses a lot of directional sounds, if your player and hardware support it. I don't know enough about sound to understand how it works with headphones, because I only have a left and a right speaker, but I can somehow still tell when the sound is coming from behind me or in front.
I bought the Xbox 360 on launch day back in 2005! It was exciting times!

I got my first by wining it from the Mountain Dew cap contest where they'd give away a 360 every 10 minutes for several months.
I slept outside a Best Buy to nab one, got Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero. Great times indeed!

You missed the two greatest joys in Infinite Undiscovery- that one of your party members is a massive red bear…and spamming the Y button at full health to hear the main character shout DID YOU TREAT THEM? DID YOU TREAT THEM? SOMEONE, PLEASE TREAT THEM!! while the party members grumble and do nothing. Such entertainment!
Were all the games for this episode on the latest patch and installed to the HD or were they run from the disc? It makes a big difference when played off a HDD.

I hate commenting at the beginning of the episode, but Joe, I must ask again, where in the heck do you get these cool video game shirts??? I've looked for video game apparel for a while now and Fangamer seems to have a good selection, but doesn't have everything like Ghosts n Goblins merch. But quality does range from shirt to shirt.
Are you getting these video game tee's made, or are they available to buy retail? Perhaps some are vintage, in which case I have an old Blockbuster employee shirt to sell from the '90s advertising the original Toy Story, brand new, if anyone knows what the price would be on that lol.

Perhaps, but keep in mind that most of the world was still very much using CRTvs back then. Even when the PS3 released a year later most people even then didn't have hdtvs.
@@jkajmo Right, and the 360 came out almost a full year earlier, when component was still the more readily available format.
I believe they also wanted to make the Xbox 360 as cheap and accessible as possible, while still having a powerful enough system to take on the PS3. Since HDTVs were rather new back then, they just didn't bother with HDMI and saved a bit of money. This strategy worked pretty well at first, a PS3 cost almost twice as much as an Xbox 360 and cross-plattform games were actually running better on the Xbox as well. If it weren't for the Red Ring of Death, Microsoft could have turned quite a profit out of this, with or without HDMI.
Ok, you brought up Alan Wake. So I have to say this.
I HATED THE FACT THAT YOU LOSE ALL YOUR WEAPONS AT THE END OF EVERY EPISODE! Seriously, that was so friggin annoying! You would get a ton of ammo and some pretty good fire power, and a stockpile of batteries. Then the episode would end with Alan getting into an accident or something and then begins the next episode with him waking with all but the default items gone. Probably making a mountain of a molehill, but if they ever make a sequel I hope to hell they don't do this again.
I only have surround on my desktop, so had to watch in stereo. Still, I appreciate this kind of upload. Maybe one of these days surround sound in web browsers will become less specialized, but I feel like I've been thinking that for a decade already.

I got Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, for the 360, at the time (2013) and could not stop playing until I finished it. THAT is a great Ninja/Hack 'n' Slash game. Just awesome. Nice ep! Thanks.
I love my X360. But I've always hated how this generation was "The grey generation" because of lack use of colors, and all the games had that weird haze effect in them.
Bloom was annoying. Sure many titles of the era didn't use too much colors, but then again I highly disliked stuff like Rage 2 with it's annoying pink effects. But still, I think it was the era that introduced the best titles.

An episode with 5.1 audio? Is this still RUclips? I'm pretty sure only high-budget shows on like Disney+, Paramount+, Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu and Amazon Prime Video get that.
They added 5.1 support towards the end of last year.
Currently, it's primarily meant for devices like the Roku.

I spent probably about 30 minutes trying to get the 5.1 to work out of my Xbox One or my PS5. Tried various output options (PCM, Dolby Digital, Atmos, DTS, etc) and no luck. Even tried overwriting Chrome to force wave output. WHY IS THE 5.1 ELUDING ME. TEACH ME THE SECRETS, JOE!! 😭😭😭
@@Gatorade69 Speakers over HDMI to a 5.1 receiver. 5.1 works fine in all of the other apps like Netflix, Amazon Video, etc. Just a RUclips thing on consoles maybe?
The PS4/PS5/Xbox RUclips app does not currently support 5.1 audio.

I'm pretty sure the Xbox RUclips app has had surround for a while now. I've tested my system with a video on RUclips on Xbox.

The "logic" behind that is people called the Xbox 360 "the 360" and they were hoping people would call Xbox One "the One". It didn't work out. Instead we got Xbone.

I can recommend Gears of War 2. It is the second one I tried, and man is it one hell of a good game :D Specially towards the end. You would be surprised how good it is compared to the first one :D
Gow actually has quite good plot line/universe for such shooter. That's just something I was bit surprised to see. I'd recommend them all.
Not sure if someone has mentioned it, but Halo 4 pushes the console, kinda like GTAV they squeezed every bit of performance out of the console

Always wanted to get into a 360 but every time the system I was using red ringed 😝 always felt bad because several people really wanted me to try out these games only for their system to die well I played. Maybe those things just knew I was a PlayStation fan 🤔
The PS3 had a very similar issue.
If you want to get one today, as long as you don‘t get the OG model model you should be fine. Go Elite or newer.

3DO FZ-1s are terrible: any problem you can imagine they have. Save your money. Suddenly games start skipping, and cleaning the lens doesn't help. Or you got a unit with soft/crackly sound, and cleaning the audio sockets doesn't help. Or the unit doesn't power off without unplugging it. Argh!
I wish YT would add surround support for PC, they don't even have it on Edge
