Fun fact - Stephen Weber wasn't told just *how* much blood he was going to be sprayed with in that staking scene. You can see him barely restrain his laughter after the second hit, and the "She's dead ENOUGH." line was ad-libbed by Weber.
They really did pick the perfect modern actor to represent renfield. Of course i didnt realise that until i saw the original Dracula film much later
i saw Bram Stoker's Dracula, then DD&LI, then the original Dracula, then DD&LI again, saying to myself "Mel Brooks hits the hammer on the head yet again."
The "Hammer" you say?
I see you've caught his slip-up: I guess now the upper hand is on the other foot!
I loved this movie as a kid, i just assumed everybody else loved it too, had no idea it had a bad rep
i know right? its wierd. like when i was younger i loved spawn and still do but didnt know it was a bomb inwas like "wat? i like spawn ha! noo! :.( .)
Same thing here. Those were different times, times before we went to websites to check reviews and scores before or after seeing a movie or both. We just watched it and figured it out for ourselves, without having our judgment and impression biased.
i have no idea why it has a bad rep, it was Mel Brooks spoofing at his finest, maybe some ppl were expecting it to be as impactful as Young Frankenstein, maybe it's like James thinks, it was the end of an era so ppl just didnt like it.
such has been the norm with movie genres ever since movies existed, like slapstick, that was a mainstream think for a decade or two, then it slowly died out, i think the same happened to classic movie spoofs.
Sergii Filonenko Even what happened to Ghostbusters when the internet took over and ranted about it, before anyone saw it.
Same here. I was born in the latter part of the 80's, and was super into horror comedies as a kid, so this is one of the most nostalgic films from my childhood, there almost right after the Ghostbusters and Gremlins. I knew the movie wasn't a celebrated classic like Young Frankenstein, but didn't know people hated it. I found my old VHS copy of the film recently and watched it again after ~20 years. Still liked it. Agree with James, MacNicol is a riot in this.
They didn't tell the actor that there
Was going to be that much blood when he staked the vampire lol watch his reaction it's fucking priceless.
I like how James is never afraid to show his honest opinion, even if the whole world disagrees with him.
Edit : That is a huge compliment btw.
No need to point out the obvious. James' fans may be many things, but idiots isn't one of them.
All groups have idiots
Yea its dangerous to have a different opinion than the majority on the internet because most of the time it just makes everybody hate you and think your an idiot with terrible taste.
fountainhead That is very true, and yet so underestimated.
“Children of the night . . . what a mess they make.”
Yes! This movie was so goofy but great!
Van Helsing: "She's almost dead!"
Harker: (blood soaked) "She's dead enough!"
I love this movie. Peter MacNicol is so underrated as Renfield, and so is Amy Yasbeck as Mina.
Mel Brooks is a legend. I know monster madness is a look back at horror films, but I appreciate the fact you put a horror parody in it. Brooks has to be one of the greatest comedy writers in the history of cinema.
R.I.P Leslie Nelson.
Was a funny actor.
is he the guy on naked weapon?
+Laughing Joking Numbnuts naked gun actually.
+Gracie J oh my bad
As was Leslie Nielsen :P
he was one of my favorite comedy actors, he just knew how to play the roles just right, never over the top, just hitting that right combination of serious acting, and complete goofing off.
I love this movie so much since my childhood, and really all Mel Brooks and Leslie Nielsen's movies are amazing.
Rotten Tomatoes gave the film an 11% rating. Which is ridiculously unfair, it's not Young Frankenstein but 11% implies that you're better watching almost anything else. No, this is definitely worth a watch, it's certainly not anything you're going to regret even if you won't necessarily absolutely love it.
R.I.P Leslie Nielson
I wished him good luck. We were ALL counting on him. R.I.P Leslie
I was scared you were going to trash the film, just because so many others do. 😌 Nice to see you appreciating it!
Even with the comedic elements, This movie is a better done Dracula movie than the Bela Lugosi version.
1. It's set in the proper Victorian time period.
2. Lucy's death and vampirism are given proper attention.
3. Dracula is actually a threat and he moves his coffin when he suspects he'll be exposed.
4. There is actually a climactic fight at the end.
What was anachronistic about the Lugosi version? Seemed pretty Victorian to me.
RIP Leslie. One of my favorite actors
IDGAF what anyone says, this is still one of my favourite comedies of all time. I even rank it about Spaceballs in my list of favourite Mel Brooks films.
My favorite modern vampire comedy is What We Do In The Shadows. If you haven't watched it, I recommend you do, it's so funny but it keeps a lot of vampire tropes ranging from the classic Bram Stoker novel to Nosferatu movies to The Lost Boys and even mentions Twilight, so it embraces a lot of vampire lore but keeps it kinda grounded to reality and in touch with modern culture, which helps make it funnier. I hope James reviews it someday, I feel like he would enjoy that movie.
What? Why does this have a negative Reputation? I loved that Movie! Admittedly, there ARE better Mel Brooks Movies, but I think, Dracula is great.
i simply think it was the end of an era, the classic movie spoof had it's run and it was dying out, which Mel Brooks probably foresaw and decided to hang it up.
+Manti Core
Apparently it came out when nobody wanted to see spoof movies anymore and as a result bombed at the box office. And it never got rid of the reputation.
Manti Core You should. It's way more funny. ;) Especially the jokes built on Van Helsing's deep accent. ^^
PS: I was 18 when it got released in theaters. ^^
Mel Brooks was already declining at the time. There was a movie called Life Stinks that pretty much became his death knell as every other movie he made since then wasn't getting audience or critical praise anymore. Like James said, people weren't getting into comedy spoofs anymore.
Admittively while i love Mel Brooks his spoof style feels very dated like when watching Robin Hood Men in tights i couldnt help but feel the movie wouldve been better had it been made in the 70s.
It was the last gasp of the true parody era right before the wayan brothers picked up the torch with scary movie and promptly ran it into the ground over time. When Brooks knew when to stop those guys didn't.
The bug eating scene is, to me, one of the funniest moments on film. MacNicol is awesome in this role.
Glad I'm not the only one who likes this movie after all
Yeah the scene with them bickering at tea time was hilarious. "Oh that was a Raspberry" "Rawssberrys I didn't see any rawssberrys?" "Oh it must have been a Raisin, fell off the muffin" lol
It was more like “Raaaawsburr” wasn’t it? Lol
Always liked this movie. Quote it almost daily.
"She's dead enough!"
"They had it coming."
Emmett Turner "RasBlapberrys?!"
"Raws Burries?" (roll the Rs ;))
Emmett Turner This is wrong! Do you hear me this is wrong!....ahhh who cares! Wrong me! Wrong my brains out!
this had a bad reception??? Everyone I know enjoyed this movie! it is awesome!!!
They thought it hadn't the same touch as Brooks' previous works.
“... I saw EVERYTHING.”
Peter MacNicol is a very underrated actor
His best are ghostbusters 2 and bean
I liked when Dracula drank blood and it sounded like he was drinking from a big gulp thru a straw
I actually find the movie very consistently funny. Maybe it's nostalgia or something, but I've seen the movie like 50 times throughout my life (it's *the* go-to comedy of my Dad and me), and it never fails to make me laugh. I think a lot of the bad reviews of the movie come from people who just took it way too seriously, as so many critics tend to do.
This was definitely an underrated Mel Brooks spoof.
"There is a message for you in the lobby."
I LOVE that part! The expression on Leslie's face is absolutely priceless.
When Renfield comes out of the house, walks in a square as to not be 'followed' and says something like I think I lost em', I laugh every time.
Ya know when Renfield cuts his finger & makes a big mess? That actually happens to me sometimes when I stick the wrong spot on MY finger during my blood sugar tests....of all the things to accurately depict....
I legit love this movie.
I love James Rolfe
I actually saw Dracula Dead and Loving It before I saw the original Dracula. When I received the Universal Classic Monsters Collection on DVD and watched Dracula, I realized that Peter MacNicol was emulating the character with such precision it was an incredible experience!
so good to hear someone else praise this movie. i adore this film. the moment that broke me into a fit of laughter was when renfield threw himself out the window and dracula says to him "i fly, you don't" seeing renfield fall past the camera just cracked me up. x
The moment when I burst into laughing tears in the movie is at the endy when they kill Dracula in bat form and his dying words are: "Renfield you idiot!!!" xD Gets me every time :D
I really love this movie. It made me laugh so much. I love the old woman shaking her throat skin in the beginning and the staking scene too.
That was Mel Brooks wife Anne Bancroft. RIP.
::shimmies 4 steps forward, 3 steps right, 3 steps back, spins in a circle, and random contorts body without moving legs:: "LOST THEM!" this will always be my favorite part of this movie.
I think Mel Brooks latest performance was as Grandpa Vampire in Hotel Transylvania 3.
His name is Vlad
@@bruhmaster6950 Thanks!
@@YggdrasilAudio No problem
NO! NO! NOT ANOTHER ENEMA!
YES ANOTHER AND ANOTHER... UNTIL YOU COME TO YOUR SENSES!!!
"Give him an enema, THEN put him in a straitjacket."
"I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING!!! I DIDN'T SEE ANYTHING!!! I saw evvverything!!!"
Shanethefilmmaker What on earth are you doing to the furniture!
"NO! Not another Enema!"
"YES, another and another! untill you come to your senses.
Loved this movie. Every time someone mentions raspberries I think back to the scene with Renfield eating the bugs and trying to conceal his madness.
I have watched this movie when I was younger so many times...I remember stopping whatever I was doing when I heard my mom or my sisters yelling out that this movie was airing on TV. TO THIS DAY, almost 10 years later I still laugh my ass off with this movie.
RIP Leslie Nielsen
oh dear, now she is dead.
-She is not dead!
She is alive?
-She is Nosferatu
She is italian?
I still don't get that joke. Is there a connection between Nosferatu and Italy or is it just funny because the question comes out of nowhere?
It's because he thinks "Nosferatu" sounds italian.
Pleauge carrier
The spoof genre back then was so damn funny and still stands up well today
I love this movie and it's one of the best comedy movies from Mel Brooks
The only spoof film that Disney did was "Enchanted" back in 2007, and it was also a musical with some sort of references and homage to Disney animated films. I saw it in the theater and it was amazing.
This film is a woefully underappreciated comedy classic. The PERFECT movie to watch with "Young Frankenstein".
Namath4ever young Frankenstein is my favorite. Really great💎🔬 😂😂😂😂😂👍🏻👍🏻🎥🍾
I love this movie and I remember I saw it by accident. I dont get why its hated because I found it funny throughout the whole thing and I didn't even get the references it was funny without the knowledge. Even him describing the scenes makes me cracks up since I remember them pretty well.
Didn't know this movie was negatively received....I love this film.
Me too, it's hilarious
What on earth are you doing to the furniture?
So much heaving and grinding…have you ever been to France?
It's really a shame that we don't seem to get these high budget parodies anymore.
The early Scary Movies are okay, unfortunately they spawned a slew of absymal attempts at parody like Epic Movie etc
My mother is a huge fan of the movie. We watched it in a few months later, and she laughed a lot. I don't know if she was a fan of Nielsen, but she really loved the movie from the beginning till the credits.
I love this movie.
renfield: "no! no! not another enema!"
One of my childhood favorites, along with Spy Hard. Always loved Leslie Nelson. But this is back when parody movies were actually good. They focused on 1 thing, rather than trying to shove in as many different illogical things as they could. After the success of Scary Movie, it all went to the toilet. Freddy Vs Jason was fun though.
Lesley nelson kills me
This kind of full-movie parody didn't die at the time, it was, sadly, succeeded by the Scary Movie franchise and all of its spin-offs.
EXACTLY ... so it died
R. Harms Well, yeah, in a way, the quality of it died but not the genre.
I thought Spy Hard was the reason to parodies lose the spirit.
This movie is basically comedy combination of Lugosi's and Lee's Dracula with a little bit of Coppola added in as well.
Fun Fact in the part were jonathan stakes lucy when she becomes a vampire the actor who played him had no idea about the blood explosion lmao XD
Peter McNichol also played an Asgardian on Agents of Shield
He also played Dr David Langley in the Mr Bean expanded universe films and novels.
I LOVED this movie as a kid and it got better when I was able to understand the humor when I got older. One of my favorites.
I found this film and bought the DVD and loved it so much.
"She just ate!" 😂
The Renfield bug eating scene is some of the funniest shit I ever saw.
Renfield: Master! Master! (beat) I mean . . . Mister! Mister!
Jonathan: :But Lucy.....I'm British"
Lucy: (touches large boobs) "But so are these!"
Jonathan: (shocked) Lucy.....aaaaaaaahhhhhaaaahhhhaaahhaa!
I swear i had an instant boner during that scene back when i was a kid...
"How dare you. After being engaged to my daughter for five years."
The cielisty between Nielsen and Brooks is great in this movie
Mel Brooks isn't quite done yet. Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Money is in the pipeline!!
Too bad after Star Wars Episode One came out he didn't capitalize on the prequel craze and make SPACEBALLS -1: THE PHANTOM FRANCHISE.
Anything with brooks and leslie neilsen is a slam dunk
... a slam dunk to buy or play the movie for sure.
I'm amazed you didn't bring up the best scene in the film.
"But...I'm British!"
"Well, so are these!"
that was funny.
People think this movie is bad because critics hate slapstick comedy for some reason, if it isn't one of the top slapstick comedies ever made (like Blazing Saddles or Naked Gun) then they call it total garbage. Ironically this caused slapstick comedies to become worse, people like Seltzer and Friedberg were able to make unspeakably bad slapstick comedies without caring what critics say, because everyone knows the critics were never going to give it a fair review anyway.
Mel's wife Anne Bancroft played the old gypsy woman toward the beginning of the movie. In the DVD commentary, Mel joked that she got the job by sleeping with the producer. :)
Loved this one, but the duo of Mel Brooks AND Gene Wilder is needed for a Classic like ‘Young Frankenstein’
i had no idea this movie was hated by people.... everyone i always talk to says they love this movie, even the die hard mel brooks fans.
'Dracula: Morto mas Feliz' É um dos grandes filmes da minha infância/Adolescência, como não lembrar do dublador do Reinfield(mesmo que o do Kiko).
-Você não tem mais mestre Reinfield, você está livre.
-Livre?! Finalmente!
-Vamos Reinfield.
-Sim mestre.
+Walder Frey of the Twins. kkkkkkkkk
Well, speaking of Mel Brooks, as most of you know "History of the World, Part II" has arrived. And to those who didn't know, yes, Mel Brooks finally made a sequel to "History of the World, Part I", and it's in the form of a TV series. I haven't seen it yet, but I loved Part I, so I think I'm definitely gonna get some enjoyment out of Part II.
This movie hits better if you saw Francis Ford Coppola's 'Bram Stoker's Dracula'. It riffs hard on that one.
Spoof era died, remake era ushered in. What a shame.
I miss leslie nielson :(
That mind control scene is one of my favorite Brooks bits.
I had so much fun with this movie and still do over the years, to me, it is a classic.
I loved it as a kid and I love it now.
WRONG ME! WRONG MY BRAINS OUT!
I don't get negative reception of that movie either. I really enjoyed this movie as a kid and at the time I was only vaguely aware of the classic, so it continues to grow on me with every viewing. One of Leslie Nielsen greatest roles ever, as well.
She's almost dead!....She's dead enough.
This was one of my favorite Mel Brooks films. Good review.
“This time I alive (as opposed to dead, and loving it) so I could go see it in theaters in 1995.”
"What We Do in the Shaddows" is a great vampire horror comedy.
YES
I love this film and I will go to bat for it every time (pun intended.)
Unfortunately it isn't the last dying gasp from that genre. It is just that the parody comedy writers of today are terrible at it. "Not Another Teen Movie" "Disaster movie" (apt name) "Epic Movie" "Superhero movie" All the "Scary Movies". None of these hold a candle to anything Mel Brooks and his contemporaries created.
I love this movie, don’t understand the heat.
so glad to hear a mostly positive review of this, sick of people always shitting on it
I mostly remember Peter MacNicol as X the Eliminator. The Eliminator. X From Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law. -- AT
The Terror Within, in the video thumbnail
👍👀
Raspberry I don't see no raspberry 🤣
I want Mel Brooks to do more Hollywood spoofs.

Bless you James for reviewing this gem. Loved it as a kid and love it until now. Leslie Nielsen is absolutely brilliant here and everyone follows suit.
I love this movie. I always laugh at the part where dracula bites the lady on the neck, then the milkshake sound happens. Silly as fuck but good.
