Dishonored: Revisiting My First Challenge Run a Decade Later

  • Dishonored is a game with a long and storied history of challenge runs. While there have been many runners of many flavors, it's hard for me to deny a sense of sentimentality toward the title, as it was the first I ever attempted. Literal years before I would even know the term "challenge run".
    The rules are as follows.
    1. No Killing anything.
    2. No detection for any reason.
    3. No upgrades. Corvo is wonderful as he is.
    4. No abilities, except where mandatory.
    5. No objects or gear, except where necessary. You know what you did, game.
    6. In the event that any rule is broken, I must then reload a save where one has not.
The incredibly strict ruleset makes things a fair bit harder to manage, but I greatly admire just how much this game shines at any zoom. Be it quick and bloody or silent and unseen, I just adore the polished feel that almost everything in it has. So for those that voted for it, thank you for giving me this chance to revisit a whole lot of memories along the way.

I actually like the idea of Corvo getting powers but holding them back in order in order to hide his true capabilities. Like, after the betrayal, imagine him thinking to himself, “alright, now I show you what I can do”

The possibility that he'd ever find out would be slim to impossible, but just imagine Daud knowing that Corvo never used the Mark of the Outsider. The most terrifying man in the empire, and he wasn't living anywhere even remotely close to his full potential.

@@SpuddyCubethis makes you stealing his coin purse EVEN WORSE. Can you imagine having all the power Daud and his men have, setting precautions and traps to guard against the power of the Mark and hearing that not only had the single man you were keeping under guard been stood right behind you, taken something off your person without the faintest clue, but that that was at his weakest?

@@trainman5675 The Dishonored books, specifically the Corroded Man, do give ideas of what Corvo has done canonically. Like, for instance, it pretty much outright states that he and Slackjaw worked together. Which opens the distinct possibility that Corvo let Slackjaw take care of the Pendleton Twins while he rescued Emily.
That said, I think the Corroded Man could have been decent for a game. The book's main villain is actually pretty cool and I think I would enjoyed him as a villain more than Delilah in Dishonored 2.

Dishonored was my introduction to immersive sims and helped open my eyes to unorthodox solutions in games.
Here's a fun fact for anybody deciding to return to Dishonored. In the flooded district there's a train car full of bodies running from one end to the other. If you stop time you can easily make your way up to it and ride it all the way out. There's a wall of light at the far end but if you make it through you're almost entirely through the mission in just a minute or two.

Generally speaking, I'm not the biggest fan of stealth games. Some optional stealth can be nice, but I'm not exactly well versed in the genre. That being said, Dishonored is spectacular, and I forgot just how much I adore it for what it is. It was an absolute treat to come back to, and it's definitely left me wanting to play the follow ups more than I expected.

I decided to play Dishonored again, and am currently giving this run a go. Loving it, btw.
The dog and Overseer are easier to manage if you go through the kitchen area (where you here about the Royal Torturer), and unplug the Wall of Light, and go through the hallway where Burrows gets arrested. The door outside the oil room will have 2 guards, but 1 is on the other side of the door, and the other can be waited out to either pass by, or stand in front of it, looking away.
From what I've spent an hour doing, you won't be able to get your gear back without a Blink. You can get in, and even get to the stair control room, but you won't be able to get back over the wall without either Blinking upwards, or using something to break the Oil Company front door. Unless there's a key somewhere for it, that would make 2 spots where you can't proceed without Blink.

i did this run myself, inspired by your VODs and learning from your mistakes and the other observations i've made from occasionally being slightly obsessed with Dishonored. i intentionally snuck upstairs in Lady Boyle's Last Party to get the key, but only grabbed the basement vault key and forgot the skeleton key. when i realised, halfway through Return to the Tower, i just redid Lady Boyle's Last Party instead of dealing with the key bullshit. i still struggled with Return to the Tower, however, because the overseer who gave you so much trouble left his room and trapped his dog's head in the door, so i couldn't do very much without being spotted by it. i also forgot that i could have just gone to the broadcast centre from the ground floor. i didn't realise that no thrown objects was a rule and i don't know if i broke it because i wasn't keeping track. i did use a grenade to kill the rats menacing the woman trapped in a basement in The Royal Physician, but that was because A) i had no reason to save her other than i would feel bad not doing and 2) i could have just as easily but slightly more slowly killed them all with my sword as the ate they corpse i used as bait.
    fun things:
when you struggled with getting past the guards at the prison entrance, you can climb some pipes to get into the room where you put the explosive without opening the door between the rooms, which is a lot less painful
as in the comment i left on the first VOD, i just let Geoff kill Campbell because it just saves a lot of hassle and i don't like Campbell
i also forgot an important part of House of Pleasure, but in my case it was returning to Slackjaw with the code to Bunting's safe
i had to turn the wheels in the Royal Physician off and on again because, for some reason, the first time i turned them off i couldn't get through the gaps
i accidentally killed Lady Boyle at least once by having her over my shoulder as i jumped over the railings in the basement to deliver her to Bunting, because for some reason it makes you drop her and the fall is enough to kill her
you can actually get onto the roof of the lock in Return to the Tower by jumping from a loudspeaker onto some weird geometry and, despite the noise the loudspeaker makes as it swings, the guard won't necessarily even hear it
there's a guard in Return to the Tower who carries whale oil who will apparently drop it even if he just hears you sprinting, blowing himself and a civilian up
you could have knocked everyone out with the arc pylon before getting the note from the bar in The Loyalists, saving yourself a headache
and, finally, Campbell didn't try to kill me when i took the key? maybe he killed you for being impolite and grabbing the key before he finished speaking? idk

    • @SpuddyCube
      @SpuddyCube  6 месяцев назад +2

It's incredible how different an experience can end up through such a short game. I didn't personally want to kill anything I didn't have to, even if it was sort of just by letting things happen like with Campbell. Though granted, there were almost definitely people that died due to my lack of interaction with side events.
It's also a bit funny how the cutscene would force Lady Boyle out of your hands like that. This game is both incredibly polished and just... not. Like, I get that the default of just having NPCs drop what they're carrying to engage with the player is simple, but not if they're carrying a bomb. Who thought that was a good idea?!

I suggest you do. The powers in that game are pretty cool when you get them. Effectively, you get the ability to disguise yourself as NPCs (called 'Semblence'), an invisible scout that stops time and lets you tag objects or NPCs of interest (called 'Foresight'), and a teleport that can work with that scouting ability to chain teleports together for quick traversal through the levels (called 'Displace').
Out of all of those, Semblence is straight up my favorite power in the entire Dishonored series. Being able to disguise as NPCs is pretty cool and the power only drains energy when you move. As long as you don't run and wander into areas that your disguise shouldn't be, in general acting suspicious, then you effectively can just hide in plain sight.
