    4:07 the mandolin and banjo starting in unison, and then gradually increasing in intervals, and finally resolving harmonically on the way down when the bass comes in a couple beats before the downbeat... perfection

    There's just this sound they have. Somewhere between autumn on a lonely mountain and a refined coffee shop on a bay in the north east. That's where I'm transported to when I listen to these guys.

      Normally when people say things like that it's overly pretentious, but I get exactly what you mean by that.

      Fake Name no, definitely over pretentious.

    You guys really understand timbre and dynamics in orchestration.

  • @d00kieman

    This is just painfully good. The record is great, good songs... But the dynamics of this performance are unbelievable. I haven't seen them be able to capture it in other performances. Seriously, I feel amazingly painful because of how great this is.

    Heard this on NPR the other day, and now I'm absolutely obsessed. What a beautiful song. It's like a Bluegrass Sigur Ros.

    One of my favorite things about performing/watching live music is that little 5-10 second space at the end of the song when nothing is playing and you could hear a pin drop and it seems like you’re in a total trance. You can see what I mean at the end of the video and golly it’s beautiful

    Feels like Michigan woods, adventuring with time to spare. Not a worry in the world. Just tall pine trees, birds singing, chipmunks chipping. Swinging in a hammock. Light rain.

    That little harmonized violin/bass part at 3:50 is not only my favorite part of this song, but quite possibly my favorite musical moment of the album. I cannot get over how beautiful this is, especially considering it's being recorded with a single microphone.

    • @drewsleyy3836
      @drewsleyy3836 6 лет назад

      Well, almost...but that Wunder 49 does a damn good job, helps to have musicians that balance themselves too!

    • @KeelyBurnMusic
      @KeelyBurnMusic 6 лет назад +2

      Andrew Weitz what’s the wunder 49? I’m pretty useless in my gear knowledge. True, Punch Brothers have had lots of practice with achieving the right balance!

    • @drewsleyy3836
      @drewsleyy3836 6 лет назад +4

      Whoops, I meant the Flea 49. Either way, both are clones of the famous Neumann M49, which is pretty much the final great tube mic Neumann created. Think Norah Jones’ vocals, orchestral recordings, etcetera.

    • @KeelyBurnMusic
      @KeelyBurnMusic 6 лет назад +2

      Andrew Weitz cool info! The Neumann I know, never heard of the other mics you mentioned

    Absolutely amazing - I hope to see you guys live some day. Really incredible musicianship, harmonic changes, dynamics...I love how you can hear influence from all sorts of music, it's so unique...definitely your recording of Passepied by Debussy is one of my favorite. And Chris your range is nuts.

    Don't look up
    It'll break the spell
    You'll miss it when it's gone and no one knows when it'll come back around
    So love it like it's going out of style
    Don't look down
    When you're on the edge
    We all lose faith
    But miss it when it's gone and love
    It's always gonna come back around
    So miss it like it's going out of style
    Singing oh
    When we grow up
    We'll have it all
    Singing oh
    (Don't look back)
    When we grow up
    We'll have it all (there's nothing there)
    Yeah, oh when we grow up
    It moves so fast
    Chase it when it's gone
    And you can miss it when it comes back around
    Our true love is reflected in the change
    We embrace for one another
    Our true selves live forever in the change
    (Live forever in the change)
    We affected one another
    So forge ahead
    Knowing you just have to miss me when I'm gone and love
    I'm always gonna come back around
    'Cause I love you like it's going out of style

    It is a great performance! But have you heard about ZYLIA ZM-1 microphone array? It enables to record the entire sound scene with only one mic. You can then separate the individual tracks of instruments and vocals and mix them into a balanced recording. There are 19 capsules inside the mic with high-end 24-bit recording resolution and you can record the music in both 3D/360˚ and traditional Stereo. There is also Ambisonics plug-in available. It is really groundbreaking technology!
