- The Pyrenees Ranges in Victoria is an area that sits at the southern end of the Great Dividing Range, a couple of hours drive from Melbourne.
When you’re researching a Gold Hot Spot like the Pyrenees and you read that Doug Stone has found numerous small nuggets of gold on the mullock heaps in this region, it sounds like this Hot Spot might be well worth a look.
We’re talking about a beautiful part of Victoria that takes in towns like Avoca, Stawell, Warrenmang, Landsborough and many others.
Gold was discovered here in the 1850’s when the Gold Rush was in full swing in Central Victoria and later deep lead mining would see up to 500 ounces of gold recovered from a ton of quartz.
Gold is still being found here today. It is said that the nearby Landsborough Deep Lead was especially rich with gold back in the day, and Doug reports that a friend recently found a 5 ounce nugget near this Landsborough Deep Lead.
While it was the golden nuggets in the ground that drew diggers in their thousands to the Pyrenees region in the 1800’s, today, that same ground is producing some of the finest wines anywhere in the world.
A prospecting trip to the Pyrenees not only offers you some excellent access to detecting sites, but excellent accommodation and access to over 30 wineries.

My great grandparents had a farm in Landsborough. I've got a bush block, regularly go camping on it and always keen to get out with the detector. Beautiful region.
